“Heroes” nominated for 2005 Hugo Award

“Heroes” (Parts 1 and 2) has been nominated for the prestigious Hugo Award in the “Best Dramatic Presentation – Short Form” category. Nominations and voting are all by popular ballot of the members of the World Science Fiction Society. A Hugo Award given in a particular year is for work that appeared in the previous calendar year.

The Hugo Award is named after Hugo Gernsback, the founder of the pioneering science fiction magazine Amazing Stories. The first award in the “Best Dramatic Presentation – Short Form” was given in 2003. The winners will be announced at a ceremony on August 7, 2005, in Glasgow as part of Interaction, the 63rd World Science Fiction Convention.

“Heroes” was written by Robert C. Cooper and directed by Andy Mikita. It tells the story from the viewpoint of a journalist, Emmett Bregman, hired by the President of the United States to profile the men and women of Stargate Command. Although Bregman knows that his documentary may never be viewed by the public in his lifetime, he pursues the assignment with tenacity. While conducting the interviews and living on the base, he becomes personally involved with the lives of those who are on the front line of a war most of the world does not know about. Eventually, his own personal experience shapes the final product after he watches a video recording made by Dr. Daniel Jackson out in the field as he assisted Dr. Janet Fraiser render medical attention to a wounded Airman Wells of SG-13. Dr. Fraiser gives Daniel permission to record Wells as he gives his final farewell to his pregnant wife, thinking that he was about to die. As other SG units hold back the attacking Jaffa, Fraiser and Daniel give aid, hope, and comfort to the young man, trusting that the line will hold. Unfortunately, the line doesn’t hold and Daniel inadvertantly records the instantaneous and brutal death of Dr. Fraiser as she is hit with the deadly force of a staff weapon blast. Bregman’s life and view were forever changed from this event, as well as the lives of those who knew and loved Janet. But, life goes on, and the lives protected by Stargate Command continue, as the birth of Wells’ baby daughter testifies. In Dr. Fraiser’s honor, Airman Wells, whose life was saved by Janet, names his daughter after her.

From light-hearted humor to tear-jerking drama, these 88 minutes of television have been considered some of the best of Stargate SG-1 and of science fiction.

S9 Spoilers: “Origin”

Posted in SG-1 at 6:17 am by DeeKayP

9.03 “Origin”

Episode Summary

When the SGC and SG-1 simultaneously encounter missionaries for some fiery gods known as the Orii, they learn that these highly evolved humans have zero tolerance for any disbelievers.

Spoiler Snippets

“Origin” is the religious dogma preached by the Priors, missionaries of the Orii, “fiery gods” from a distant galaxy. They have been given the knowledge that our galaxy has not been “enlightened” and have come to convert us or destroy us.

Daniel and Vala have been rendered unconscious by an alien device and all the efforts of Dr. Carolyn Lam (Lexa Doig) and Dr. Bill Lee (Bill Dow) have been for naught. As they attempt to find the medical and technical answers to save them, Mitchell, Dr. Lindsay, and SG-12 encounter a Prior on the planet P3X-421 who is preaching in a tent. The Prior has shown command of nature, making vegetables grow in less than an hour before the SGC personnel’s very eyes. Mitchell recruits the Prior to return to the SGC with him with the hope that he will release Daniel and Vala from the grips of the device. The Prior takes the invitation, but once seeing that the device will not release them, simply states, “It is the will of the Orii.”

The Orii are ascended beings who collect themselves in a wall of fire. Individual Orii take temporary possession of a host, a Doci, a human spiritual leader. Daniel’s mind is linked so that he experiences a face-to-face confrontation with a Doci and an Orii on the planet Celestis in a distant galaxy. The message is clear: turn to “Origin”, or be reduced to dust. As his confrontation progresses, his body experiences extreme stress, adding to Dr. Lam’s consternation.

Meanwhile, Gerak, former First Prime of the Goa’uld Atum, has been invited to the SGC to meet with Gen. Landry (Beau Bridges) and Teal’c. Accompanying Gerak (Louis Gossett, Jr.) is Vat’yir, another Jaffa formerly of Atum’s ranks, and an escort of six additional Jaffa. Gerak ceremoniously comes down the ramp, his path flanked by the six Jaffa. Teal’c is not amused.

Gerak has taken a role in leading the Free Jaffa Nation, but Landry and Teal’c realize his goals do not mesh with theirs. Landry attempts to persuade Gerak that they must continue to work together or all that they have worked for will deteriorate into chaos.

S9 Spoilers: Shanks, Judge at Creation Con

Posted in SG-1 at 12:17 am by Alison

More tidbits on the Season 9 premiere three parter “Avalon” [Robert Cooper] from the appearance of Michael Shanks and Christopher Judge at this weekend’s Grand Slam Creation Convention:

At the beginning of S9, SG-1 is disbanded and everyone has gone their separate ways. Daniel is sporting a beard! In the first 5 episodes SG-1 doesn’t operate so much as a team, but do involve Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell (Ben Browder), Daniel, Teal’c, and Vala (Claudia Black).

The Vala story arc will last for six episodes [rather than the originally estimated five] but Daniel and Vala, will probably not “get together” in the end.

There is likely to be a crossover story line between SG-1 and Atlantis at about midseason.

Until a grave event reunites them, except not all of them could come back, so Mitchell is put in place as the temporary commander of a newly-formed SG-1. Amanda Tapping, who plays Carter, is currently on maternity leave and is expected to be out of the show until mid-May.

Shanks said that Jack and Sam are not together in response to a question about the two having retired to marry.

Jack O’Neill is at Homeworld Security in D.C. It seems that the SGC has been downsized because of the defeats of the Goa’uld, Replicators, and Anubis.

We don’t know what triggers the reunion, but Vala [Claudia Black, Prometheus Unbound] is in the picture somehow.

Also, there is a female character named Sallis [April Telek] who appears in Parts 2 and 3 of the Season 9 three-part opener “Avalon”.

Lexa Doig is credited in the IMDB database entry on Stargate SG-1 with a guest appearance in the season premiere “Avalon” along with Claude Knowlton as another medical doctor. Her character is credited as CMO Landry [she is General Landry's daughter] but writer and Executive Producer Joseph Mallozzi told fans that the character was called Dr. Carolyn Lam.

S9 Spoilers: Gary Jones

Posted in SG-1 at 11:58 pm by Alison

The Site Admin at the online BBoard ‘A Galaxy Of Stars’ posted this news for Gary Jones fans on his official message board on 3rd March:

“Walter Harriman gets a promotion to CHIEF MASTER SERGEANT WALTER HARRIMAN!!!!

I hope you will all agree that this is great news, and may be it will mean we see more of Jonesy on-screen!!!!

Jonesy explained that he meets the new character played by Ben Browder in the gateroom and introduces himself as Chief Master Sergeant!”

And then on March 7th, Gary Jones himself confirmed the news:

“walterites:
yes, yes, yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it’s true. i’m promoted. i’m now a CHIEF MASTER SERGEANT and i still have a name to attach to that: WALTER HARRIMAN.
i’m now in the scripts under: SGT. HARRIMAN, instead of what it used to say: TECHNICIAN.
it’s just great. and i have to tell you all that i’ve been working with ben browder and beau bridges and they’re AWESOME! i watched beau do a bunch of takes and i couldn’t take my eyes off the monitor. the guy is the smoothest. holy moley!
then get this, between takes, he sits down with me and goes, “so, gary, how do you see this relationship between the general and walter developing?” i was stunned. no-one has ever done that.
i think that fans are going to be very happy about the way things willdevelop at SGC. in fact, i’ve hardly sat at my computer these last couple of days. i’ve been up in the briefing room and doing all sorts of other stuff.
it’s going to be a great season, starting with MY PROMOTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cheers everyone,
jonesy”

S9 Spoilers: more from Joe Mallozzi

Posted in SG-1 at 8:04 am by Alison

More spoilers from writer and Executive Producer Joseph Mallozzi, courtesy of Gateworld forum:

Q: My questions for you are, what was your favorite episode to write?

A: Honestly – my favorite episode to write was the last one I scripted, The Ties That Bind.

Q: Do you have a preferance in what type of stories you like to write, or what characters you like to write for?

A: I like to write scripts with at least some possibility for humor. As for characters I like to write for – Mitchell and Daniel were a blast to write for in the aforementioned episode.

Q: What is the most difficult part about writing for Stargate?

A: I’ve never been a fan of the “techy” episodes and find those particularly challenging to write.

Q: Will Carter’s new position take her off-world (e.g. working at the Alpha site or on the Prometheus or Deadalus?) or is it an earth-bound position?

A: When season 9 kicks off, Carter will be far, far away.

Q: We know Amanda will be back, but for the characters do they consider Sam’s new position to be permanent or temporary? IOW, will they be surprised when she returns?

A: They could be surprised but, honestly, after everything these guys have seen over the past 8 years, I doubt very much that anything surprises them anymore.

Q: When Sam returns, who will be in command of SG-1?

A: When she returns, Mitchell is leading SG-1. Do you mean who will be leading the team when she re-joins SG-1?

Q: I know I am in the minority here, but I like seeing Daniel in action mode, will we be seeing more of his fighting skills in season 9?

A: Season 9 = more of Daniel fighting, investigating, translating, studying, confronting, blowing his top, getting beat up – and then some.

First picture of RDA with seals

Posted in News at 1:13 pm by Palubast

RDA and seal

Solutions have the first picture of Richard Dean Anderson on the ice floes in Canada’s Gulf of St Lawrence where he is supporting the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in their action against the annual Canadian seal hunt.

Anderson has been on the Sea Shepherd board of directors since 2002 but filming commitments have prevented him from joining them on the ice in previous years. On Sunday he flew out to the ice floes by helicopter and, despite having a broken ankle, spent the afternoon being photographed with harp seal pups to publicise Sea Shepherd’s fight against the slaughter. According to figures from the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans 365,971 harp seals were killed in the 2004 hunt, although environmental groups believe the true figure is far higher.

After his time in the Gulf of St Lawrence, Anderson then returned to Charlottetown where he is currently giving a press conference.

We have another great picture to follow and hope to bring you RDA’s statement on the seal hunt very soon.

Photograph ? Peter Brown, used by kind permission of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
