Solutions Honored in 2006 Stargate Fan Awards

Posted in Articles & Updates, News at 12:31 pm by DeeKayP

The staff of Stargate SG-1 Solutions are proud and honored that they have won the 2006 General Website Award.

The Stargate Fan Awards has been in existence since 2001 and all the nominations and votes come from Stargate fans. The site itself is run by some (presumably very tired by now) volunteers.

Considering over 25,000 votes were cast amongst all the categories in websites, fan art, fanvids, fanfiction, etc, and our competition included some other notable sites, we are deeply honored by the accolade.

All of the winners and nominees can be found at www.stargatefanawards.com.

Solutions thanks all the participants, and congratulates our fellow winners and nominees in the awards.

New Stargate Guides Published

Posted in Merchandise at 10:52 am by michelle

In the past few weeks, three new Stargate books have become available, at least in the US and UK. I have all three and would very much recommend them:

Stargate SG-1: The Ultimate Visual Guide. Written by Kathleen Ritter, who runs the rdanderson.com web site, this large, hard-back book is full of hundreds of color photos from SG-1, and is a mini-encyclopedia of the characters, races, technology, and plot arcs of the show. While most of the write-ups are short, they are relevant, accurate, and interesting. The book comes with a CD but I haven’t opened it yet!

Stargate SG-1: The Illustrated Companion Season 9. The guide books are now being written by Sharon Gosling, who publishes the Stargate novels, rather than journalist Thomasina Gibson, who wrote previous years’ books, in which two seasons were combined for each book. The new issue is lively and fun, with plenty of quotes from writers, directors, and actors. The foreword is by Michael Shanks! While the black and white reproductions are not great, there is a several-page color insert with excellent stills and production photos. My only complaint is Gosling’s overuse of exclamation points (!) which I find distracting as I read.

Stargate Atlantis: The Official Companion Season 2. Again written by Sharon Gosling, this is similar to the SG-1 guide and also a lot of fun, with many behind-the-scenes tidbits.

Write SCI FI's wrongs!

Posted in News, Views at 11:33 pm by Alison

Save Stargate SG1.com has learned that in its 3rd week, Battlestar Galactica, critically acclaimed flagship show of the SCI FI Channel, has shed more viewers.

Airing Friday 20 October, Exodus Part 2 obtained a 1.4 HHR according to the Nielsen fast overnight ratings. This is a drop of approximately 11.1% from the 1.6 HHR for Exodus Part 1, and a drop of approximately 22.2% from the 1.8 HHR gained by the Season 3 premiere episodes.

No one here wishes ill of Battlestar Galactica, any more than we wish ill of Stargate SG-1 or Atlantis. Many of us are fans, or at least viewers, of all three shows. As campaigners, Save Stargate SG-1 have been arguing since the cancellation that, together, the Gates and Galactica had a natural synergy, a must-see triad in the SCI FI Friday lineup that strengthened the ratings of all.

SCI FI fixed what wasn’t broke. They were wrong.

Stargate SG-1, Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica have all shed viewers since the separation. Together, they were thriving, holding their audiences, gaining viewers, riding high. Separated by SCI FI’s scheduling decisions, they’re suffering. Stargate SG-1 has been cancelled. Even more expensive to produce, Galactica is bleeding viewers week on week. The proof is in the Nielsens, not the media hype.

It’s time to call SCI FI Channel on its bad decisions. Time to tell it straight to Bonnie Hammer and Mark Stern. They were wrong. Dead wrong. Let’s help them right that wrong.

Now is the time to tell them to save not just Stargate SG-1, but themselves.

SCI FI Channel needs to reinstate its SCI FI Friday lineup NOW: Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica.

SCI FI Channel needs an 11th season of Stargate SG-1. Or it might not make it into a 4th season of Galactica.

Parent company NBC Universal’s poor performance has seen them launch a $750 million restructure, including shedding 700 jobs, in a bid to restore profits. They cannot afford for SCI FI or Galactica to fail.

David Hewlett's Do-It-Yourself Movie

Posted in News at 12:41 pm by michelle

Having written, directed, and starred in his own movie, Stargate Atlantis’ David Hewlett (Rodney McKay) is continuing his do-it-yourself theme as he and his partner Jane set out to market and even distribute the film: A Dog’s Breakfast. David has coded his own website (using the Joomla CMS, for geeks who want to know), including a forum, which to us is quite unheard of in acting circles!

He wants to distribute the movie himself in North America and the UK, to prevent most of the income from the film from going to the distributor instead of to those who made the film but haven’t yet been paid. As he described in this interview,

But the reality is we have a whole crew there who deferred all their wages. Deferrals usually mean you don’t see the money. Most people, and I’ve done this for like 20 years or something, and everything I’ve ever deferred, I’ve never made a penny on. And you know that going in and you just assume that it’s not going to happen. I very much want to be one of those films that’s an exception to that rule.

As a first step, David is planning all-day screening events for fans, sort of one-day conventions in which he would be there to answer questions, sign autographs, and of course show the film. He is likely looking for high concentrations of Stargate fans to ensure a good turnout.

In his latest blog entry, David asks fans to boost the profile of the movie through on-line activities like linking to his site and watching the trailer on YouTube. He also welcomes fans to request screenings in their area and perhaps even to help contact local theaters to convince them to provide a time and place for a screening.

So we’re here to help David get his very funny film out to the masses, if for no other reasons than he’s a cool guy, a great actor, and a geek like us. Good luck, David!

New fandom poll: SG1 character crossovers into Atlantis

Posted in Views at 4:39 pm by Alison

Just as there has been talk of SG-1 finishing up with a couple of TV/DVD movies since the cancellation, there’s also been talk of SG-1 characters possibly moving over to Atlantis.

Without going through the formalities of collecting data through a survey, the Save SG1 campaigners are still interested in how fans feel about this issue, so they invite you to participate in their new poll at the SaveStargateSG1.com site:

Which SG1 character would you most like to see transition to Atlantis? Go here to place your vote.

Please do spread word of the poll to all of your SG1 and Atlantis sites, lists, forums, LJs and Bboards. Even if you’re adamantly opposed to any character transitioning from one show to the other, there’s an option for you to vote too!

TV Guide: 'Gate Expectations: SG-1 OK'd for Two Films

Posted in News at 6:52 am by DeeKayP

Tying up loose ends

Matt Mitovich has posted in TV Guide Community that Stargate SG-1 will conclude with two movies, most likely for DVD:

Stargate SG-1 may be winding down its 10-year-run this spring, but here’s some exciting news for its fans. MGM has granted a green light — and enough money — to produce two movies, most likely for DVD, executive producer Brad Wright tells TV Guide. The first flick will tie up most of the finale’s loose threads — “It’s the climax of the Ori story line” — and will be written-directed by exec producer Robert Cooper. The second film, penned by Wright, will involve time travel, and both projects should debut in the fall of 2007. Though no deals are signed, SG-1’s stars are said to be “very eager” to continue. “They’re not big-budget [films] by any definition, but for us it’s pretty good,” says Wright. “As we’ve proven over the years, just give us little more money and we can make pretty good television, or DVDs.

“There’s a sense of an era for us ending,” Wright continues, “but at the same time, we’re all positive because of the prospect of continuing forward with movies and the introduction next year of Stargate Worlds, a massive multiplayer online game.”

Battlestar Premiere Ratings Not Stellar

Posted in News at 5:57 pm by michelle

In spite of massive promotion on Sci Fi Channel and other venues, Friday’s premiere of Season 3 of Battlestar Galactica in the US earned a rating of only 1.8, as reported here. This is not much higher than the 1.7 with which Stargate SG-1 finished its half season. As reported here, BSG’s 1.8 rating represents a large decline from its first season ratings, and is only 2% higher than its last half-season average. It’s not clear if BSG’s “darker” arc has turned away some viewers, or if the break-up of “Sci Fi Friday” had a negative effect.

Stargate fans may wonder if Sci Fi will be as tough on BSG as it was on Stargate for slightly lower performance, but after much less promotion.
