SGA "Travelers": Friend or Foe?

Sheppard and Larrin kiss in 4.05

Tonight’s episode of Stargate Atlantis, “Travelers”, tells a classic story of boy meets girl, but with a bit of a twist: this isn’t your ordinary boy and this certainly isn’t your ordinary girl. Her name is Larrin and she’s the leader of her people, the Travelers.

“We introduced a new race called the Travelers just because we wanted to introduce a technologically advanced [race] to the Pegasus galaxy,” writer Joseph Mallozzi told MSN TV Blog. “It was something that was a little difficult to do because the Wraith tend to destroy technologically advanced races. So we created this race that are nomadic and live on ships, so they’re never in one place long enough for the Wraith to catch up with them. What they essentially do is they travel from planet to planet that has been recently culled and they scavenge the technology that has been left behind and they use it to upgrade their ships.

“This race is a loose cannon. On the one hand, they’re on the run from the Wraith. So obviously they’re no friend to the Wraith. But on the other hand, they are on the lookout for new technology. So they take a particular interest in Atlantis and Sheppard in particular [...] He’s on his way back to Atlantis in a puddle jumper and his puddle jumper gets ambushed. The fact that he has the Ancient gene is of particular interest to them because there’s plenty of Ancient technology in the Pegasus galaxy and he could prove useful.”

How useful? Larrin, played by Jill Wagner (see Solutions Blog casting story), wants Sheppard to cooperate in bringing an Ancient warship, similar to an Aurora class, back to life, so that its advanced technology can be used by her people and against the Wraith. While Sheppard is her prisoner, Larrin uses all types of pursuasion, including opening her ship’s cargo bay doors right under his feet — basically suspending him and his Puddle Jumper over the vastness and the vacuum of space with only the ship’s shield as an invisible barrier. But, he gets a bird’s eye view of the Ancient ship and then the adventure really gets going. (Fans can see a preview of this scene at Yahoo TV – video #66, “Sheppard is caught in a compromising position”).

Larrin of the Travelers

“How can I describe her?” Mallozzi continued, “A lot of the fans who have heard about her have compared her to Vala. I guess in some respects she is Vala-esque in that she’s a loose cannon and independent. But she’s a lot more grounded, a lot more no-nonsense, not as flighty as Vala. She’s not a thief. She’s the leader of her people. ‘A tough cookie’ would be a good way to describe her.”

Joe Flanigan spoke to Starburst about how much of ‘a tough cookie’ Larrin is. “I wanted to have a strong female character that was difficult for us to get a handle on, but who Sheppard had to rely on for his own strategic ends. So Joe Mallozzi and Paul Mullie wrote Travelers, which introduces a character who I think is going to become incredibly popular on the show. Her name is Larrin and she’s this very sexy woman who kidnaps my character, beats the c**p out of him, then he beats the c**p out of her. They need each other and have to learn how to deal with one another.”

Get introduced to Larrin and her people tonight at 10pm Eastern on the Sci Fi Channel (repeats at midnight). Those recording the episode need to set their timers to go over because the episode is running about two minutes late (i.e., 10:02-11:02pm), because “flashback” scenes for Battlestar Galactica: Razor are being shown during the lead-in show Flash Gordon. (The midnight airing could be offset by as much as five minutes). Once you’ve watched, please visit our on-site forum to cast your vote and discuss the episode.

Atlantis Gets Season Five!

The Sci Fi Channel has renewed Stargate Atlantis for another 20-episode season, according to an announcement by Variety.com!

According to what he said in his personal blog, executive producer and co-showrunner Joseph Mallozzi was expecting word on the cable network’s decision by the end of this week, following the evaluation of the show’s Season Four performance in the ratings. This year’s ratings have become even more complicated with the addition of the “C3″ numbers that reflect the watching of commercials on digital recording devices played up to three days after the initial airing. (The Sci Fi Channel usually publishes the “Live + Same Day” ratings because those numbers come out “overnight”, but the C3 ratings are just as important to them and their advertising investors, taking into account that more people are recording their favorite shows for later viewing.)

From the Variety.com announcement:

” ‘Atlantis’ truly came out from under the shadow of its sister series this year and proved that it’s a hit in its own right,” said Sci Fi’s Mark Stern, exec veep of original programming. The show’s predecessor, “Stargate SG-1,” ran for 10 seasons on Sci Fi before completing its run last year.

In its Friday 10 p.m. timeslot, “Atlantis” has chalked up a season-to-date average of 1.8 million total viewers, easily outperforming Sci Fi’s primetime average of about 1.3 million total viewers.

Congratulations to all of those involved with the production of Stargate Atlantis. Solutions will keep track of next season’s development just as we did for Season Four. In the meantime, enjoy Season Four (new episodes on Sci Fi on Fridays at 10pm Eastern) knowing that there will be more to come and that the upcoming cliffhanger won’t be keeping you hanging for too long!

"The Ark of Truth" Almost Ready for Release

Stargate: The Ark of Truth

Writer, director, and producer Robert C. Cooper recently visited Joseph Mallozzi’s personal blog to answer some questions about his recently-aired Stargate Atlantis episode “Doppelganger”, and while he was there, he answered some questions concerning his direct-to-DVD movie Stargate: The Ark of Truth.

Mallozzi wrote that the producers got together yesterday to watch the movie on the big screen at Sharpe Sound Studios in North Vancouver. In attendance were Robert C. Cooper, Brad Wright, Joseph Mallozzi, Paul Mullie, Martin Gero, and Alex Levine. Not wanting to give away spoilers, Mallozzi simply stated, “Suffice it to say, this is a movie that will richly reward longtime fans.”

The version of the movie that the producers watched was a mix — a version that now includes visual effects and a soundtrack. Mallozzi said, “As for yesterday’s surround sound experience – another WOW goes out to Joel Goldsmith for an incredible score. He has truly outdone himself on this one.” Goldsmith had commented in an interview done about a year ago that he was planning on using an orchestra because the movie’s budget (around $7 million) allowed for it.

Script coordinator Alex Levine commented on the mix in his scifi.com blog recently, “Apparently there are 240 VFX shots (240!) that will be finals in the next week or so.” The time needed to create these visual effects was given as one of the reasons for the movie’s postponed release (see Solutions Blog story).

After viewing the mix, the producers wrote their notes that will go toward producing a “Final Mix” — the released version. Mallozzi stated, “Anyway, we sat back, took assiduous notes, and when the lights came up, tossed ‘em Rob’s way: take down the sounds of the streaking ships, hit the jumping into and out of hyperspace a little stronger, and, oh yeah, lose the space crickets. And that was pretty much it. See you at the premiere!”

And when exactly is the premiere? Cooper said, “Right now the target for release of Ark (notice the ‘k’) in North America is March 11, 08. But don’t quote me. That could change.” It was interesting that Cooper qualified this release as only for North America, whereas before it was thought that the DVD would be released at the same time world-wide by MGM and Fox Home Entertainment.

As far as casting is concerned, Cooper confirmed that Sarah Strange (Morgan Le Fay) is in the movie and gave his reasons why Richard Dean Anderson didn’t appear. “I know a lot of people were disappointed that O’Neill doesn’t appear in Ark. The story didn’t really call for it and I didn’t want to wedge him in as I know you would have accused me of doing afterward. But in our tireless effort to please all the people all the time he is back in a big way in Continuum.”

When Cooper and Wright talked about the new format for their stories after the show was canceled, they emphasized that they’d have as much time as they needed to tell the story rather than be limited by the regular 44-minute run time of an episode. Cooper has also said that his story was what was originally really meant to be spread across the course of Season Eleven, but had to be condensed into this one movie instead. In Mallozzi’s blog, he addressed this by stating, “As far as whether the story in Ark feels rushed, while I’m sure diehard fans would have like to see the beats play out over a whole season richly textured with detail … the trade off is that in one jam packed 90 minute movie you get a lot more impact as the big moments unfold. I hope.”

Fans attending Comic Con in San Diego were treated to an action-packed trailer for the movie (see Solutions Blog story), but, surprisingly, the trailer has not appeared on any of the recent Stargate DVD releases. Cooper stated, “There will be trailers for Ark emerging shortly. I believe Fox intends to put them on other DVD releases prior to March.”

SGA "Doppelganger" Feeds on Fear

Sheppard in SGA "Doppelganger"

Tonight’s episode of Stargate Atlantis is “Doppelganger”, written and directed by Robert C. Cooper. In this story, the Atlantis Expedition suffers from nightmares with Sheppard as the antagonist after he touches a crystalline structure harboring an evil, psychopathic entity.

Script coordinator Alex Levine gave the background behind the story in his scifi.com blog. “When he [Robert Cooper] was a little boy (maybe too little?), his Dad took him to see JAWS, and it had a big effect on him. He was lying there in bed that night, probably scared out of his wits, and thought to himself that some day he wanted to control the power that gripped him the way JAWS did. So that’s why he decided to become a filmmaker. And now he’s turned that power on you people in Doppelganger, a story about nightmares and people’s fear of dreams.”

Cooper digs deep into Stargate SG-1’s rich ten-year mythology to put his story together. He told Gateworld, “O’Neill went out, touched a crystal and all this stuff happened [1.07 "Cold Lazarus"]. We’ve never done that again. And I thought, ‘Well, wouldn’t it be interesting if we found another crystalline life-form like that.’ But in that case we were kind of lucky that it had reasonably good intentions. There was a sinister aspect to it in that we didn’t know what was going on, but at the end of the day it was kind of just curious. So I took the flip side of that and said, ‘What if it’s a psychopath? What if it’s truly evil?’ And it enduces some pretty freaky nightmares. [...] What would our characters dream about? The fun part of the episode is, because it’s Sheppard that initially engages and touches the crystal, and thus unleashes the entity on everyone, the physical form it takes in the nightmares is Sheppard. And so everyone is having these nightmares that are being pulled out of them by the entity, but Sheppard is appearing in those dreams as the sort of negative [inciting] force.”

“Doppleganger” was the first episode to be filmed so that Cooper could move on to the production of the first SG-1 movie, Stargate: The Ark of Truth, which he also wrote and directed. Although it was first to be filmed, it is fourth to be aired, and that presented some interesting challenges. Levine explained, “For example, Carter is settled and in charge of Atlantis now, but Rob and the actors had to sort of guess at how the relationships between her and the other team members would have evolved by this point in time. I think they had some scripts to read, but not all. And even so, things can change from the page to the screen. They also had to think of practical concerns. For example, what’s her office look like now? That sort of thing. So that was a challenge.”

The out-of-airing-order production of the episode also had another effect: somehow iTunes released this episode under the title “Adrift” (the actual first episode to air) for the fans to download! The mistake was soon corrected, but not before several people got an advanced viewing! It remains to be seen if this premature release will affect the live ratings tonight.

Lorne confronts Sheppard in "Doppleganger"

Within the storytelling itself were the challenges of not giving away the twists and turns too soon. Levine related, “Rob also told me he found some conflicts between his two roles as writer and director. For example, as a director, he was excited because he thought he would have many opportunities to use interesting camera techniques in the dream sequences. But then he discovered that, in order to maintain the story, he has to keep the audience guessing as to what is a dream and what isn’t. Apparently the technical term for that is a “goof”. So he wasn’t able to go crazy, using wide lenses and making it look very surreal, or else that would tip the goof too soon and the audience wouldn’t be fooled.” Levine then offered a hint as to how to tell the Sheppards apart (read his blog to find out).

In portraying both Sheppard and his doppelganger, Joe Flanigan offered in a Starburst interview, “It’s really important that there’s a distinction between your character and its twin, but in this case it was tricky because for the first two-thirds of Doppelganger you can’t tell which Sheppard is which. It had to be a gradual distinction between the real one and his twin until the latter evolves into complete evil. It was a little complicated, though, because we didn’t quite have all the scenes written in order to qualify the transition. So it was a fairly abrupt evolution from subtle differences to glaring differences.”

Executive producer and co-showrunner Joseph Mallozzi told fans in his personal blog that this episode includes “a Sheppard beat-down to beat all Sheppard beat-downs.” According to Levine, “In fact, this was the first episode that we used a 3D flying rig for stunts. And the stunt in which Sheppard is kicked off the balcony — well that’s really Sheppard. Joe Flanigan did his own stunt there.”

Tune in tonight at 10pm Eastern on the Sci Fi Channel for the premiere of “Doppelganger” (repeats at midnight). If you are recording the episode, keep in mind that lead-in show Flash Gordon will be running over for about two minutes because “flashback” scenes are being shown for Battlestar Galactica: Razor (the midnight showing might be as far behind as four to five minutes).

SGA "Reunion" Is About Roots

Jason Momoa as Ronon Dex (S4)

When asked to use one word to describe “Reunion”, tonight’s episode of Stargate Atlantis, during the episode’s development, executive producer, co-showrunner, and episode writer Joseph Mallozzi wrote in his personal blog: “roots.” He explained this choice further in an MSN TV Blog interview: “In the episode called “Reunion,” she [Col. Samantha Carter] settles in. It’s not an easy first day. In that particular episode, her settling in is the B-story, where the A-story is Ronon encountering some Satedans that he thought were killed in the fall of Sateda, his former friends and the unit he fought with. He’s drawn to his past and has to make a decision, the decision between remaining with the life he’s built on Atlantis or returning of the roots he knew. In the same episode, Carter is letting go of the roots she knew and building a new home on Atlantis. It’s kind of interesting how those two stories intersect. Carter kind of runs afoul of Ronon, who doesn’t appreciate her coming in and establishing certain protocols. She doesn’t exactly run afoul of Sheppard, but they have a certain disagreement about mission priorities.”

Script coordinator Alex Levine wrote in his scifi.com blog that “the first half of the Atlantis season contains episodes that key on specific characters, and this one is really about Ronon, as he runs into some old Satedan comrades-in-arms. He’s torn, because they’re out there battling the Wraith their own way, and he feels like he should be loyal to them and perhaps leave Atlantis. Well when the first script came out, one of the notes was that the beginning of the script was too much character stuff as the action doesn’t start up right away. But Joe [Mallozzi] stuck to his guns, and I think rightly so.”

Although the action might not start up right away, there is plenty of it in this episode. Levine wrote, “I think it’s a great episode, with a big OP (read: combat operation) and tons of fights and stunts. Maybe even the best fight sequences we’ve ever done (big ups to James Bamford, our fearless stunt coordinator and fight choreographer).” Most likely, these stunt fight sequences were enhanced by Mark Dacascos, an expert in the martial arts (see Solutions Blog casting story) who plays Tyre, one of Ronon’s Satedan friends.

Carter hugs Teal

Concerning Carter’s character-driven B-story, in a sneak peek video posted at Yahoo TV, fans get to see Carter say good-bye to Teal’c (in a cameo appearance by Christopher Judge) as she finishes her packing and heads off to Atlantis as its new commander. Through her tears, Teal’c can see how much the ten years on SG-1 have meant to her and reassures her that “SG-1 will not be far away.” Calling back to his famous “undomesticated equines” line he used to reassure his team leader O’Neill that he wouldn’t leave his side when he was literally pinned to a wall and in pain (“Message in a Bottle”), Teal’c shows the depth of the roots that all of the members of SG-1 have nurtured over the years.

“Reunion” premieres tonight at 10pm Eastern on the Sci Fi Channel (and re-airs again at midnight). If you’re recording the episode, keep in mind that it might be running a little late as there are Battlestar Galactica clips being shown during Atlantis’s lead-in show Flash Gordon. After watching, please visit the Solutions on-site forum to cast your vote and discuss the episode.

Doig Lands Role in "Ba'al"

Lexa Doig as Dr. Carolyn Lam

Stargate’s Lexa Doig (Dr. Carolyn Lam) is filming a new movie for the Sci Fi Channel called Ba’al. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the movie stars Jeremy London (7th Heaven) as “a rogue Smithsonian archaeologist, dying of cancer, who will stop at nothing to retrieve the ancient amulets of the storm god Ba’al, which could cure him or make him a god.”

The film is being directed by Paul Ziller (who directed Doig’s husband and Stargate’s Dr. Daniel Jackson, Michael Shanks, in Swarmed, as well as the Stargate Atlantis Season Three episode “The Real World”) and produced by CineTel Films. They are using Insight Film Studios in and around Vancouver (September 26 through October 22) to make the film, which will be part of Sci Fi Channel’s Saturday night programming late next year. The movie also co-stars Stefanie von Pfetten of Dragon Boys.

SGA S4 Filming Wraps, Actors Find Projects

SGA Season Four Cast
Cast of Season Four of Stargate Atlantis

Introduction

It might seem a bit strange talking about the end of Season Four’s filming just as the episodes are starting to make their world premieres on the Sci Fi Channel, but it’s that time of year once again! Word still hasn’t come from Sci Fi about renewal for a fifth season, though, so whether or not the fond farewells the cast and crew bid each other on Friday, October 5, were to mark the end of a season of filming or the series as a whole remains to be seen. Executive producer and co-showrunner Joseph Mallozzi, looking back over the season’s development, stated in his personal blog, “I’m extremely satisfied with the end-product, and extremely satisfied with all of the hard work put in by the cast, crew, writers – pretty much everyone who stepped up and helped make this such a terrific year.”

As far as what everyone will be doing over the hiatus (the time between filming the seasons), here’s a quick run-down from what we’ve been able to gather from the Internet. If there are more, please add to them in the comment section for this blog entry. :)

Joseph Mallozzi

Season Four was the first for Joseph Mallozzi and long-time writing partner Paul Mullie as showrunners for the show. Since Mallozzi has been keeping his personal blog for about a year now, fans have had an exceptional peek into what goes behind such a position. It’s apparent from Mallozzi’s entries that he has many interests, including trying out various restaurants and reading science fiction novels. Concerning how he’ll be spending his time off, Mallozzi wrote, “Well, it really depends. If the show doesn’t get picked up, I’ll probably be working on pilot scripts are heading down to L.A. for meetings. If the show does get picked up, then we’ll be spinning stories and heading off to write – over the hiatus. So, time off in the long-term? No. Time off in the short-term? Sort of. I’m so exhausted that I think I’ll be sleeping straight through next week and well into word on the show’s fate.”

Joe Flanigan

Joe Flanigan will be making some convention appearances this month in Australia (October 13-14) and New Zealand (October 20-22). He revealed at the Comic Con in San Diego earlier this year that MGM has tapped him to star in the remake of the 1991 film Shattered, filming for which was last heard to be starting in November. According to IMDb, the tagline for the 1991 film was “A love he can’t forget. A murder he can’t remember.”

Amanda Tapping

Amanda Tapping has revealed in recent interviews that she’ll be making more webisodes for her on-line serial Sanctuary. She’s working with Stargate veterans Damian Kindler and Martin Wood to create another ten hours of entertainment, which equates to about 40 webisodes. Tapping said in a Sci Fi World interview, “Really, honestly, I just want to get Sanctuary up and going, that’s my main motivation right now.”

Rachel Luttrell

Rachel Luttrell is currently expecting her first child, so right now things are a bit quiet for her as she prepares for this momentous event. Her pregnancy was written into her character Teyla’s story arc for Season Four. Luttrell posted a note to her fans on her official website, “Another season has blown by. And it has been a wonderful one. I will endeavor to attend the party [wrap party held on September 29]…. but my first child may decide to make an appearance at any moment now. Exciting times!”

Jason Momoa

Jason Momoa is a new father! He and partner Lisa Bonet celebrated the birth of daughter Lola Iolani Momoa on July 21. According to one report, Momoa’s mother revealed more about the baby girl: “The middle name means royal hawk, and was chosen as there were hawks flying around [overhead] during the birth. The baby has ‘long legs, lots of black hair, and her lips are the perfect shape.’”

Momoa’s family means a lot to him, as he recently got a large tattoo that represents his family crest on his left forearm that the producers covered for “Adrift” and “Lifeline”, but will reveal in “Reunion”. Momoa gave Flanigan a new guitar at the end of filming for Season Four that is decorated with the same pattern. Fans can see the guitar in a picture Joseph Mallozzi posted in his blog entry for October 1.

David Hewlett

David Hewlett saw his independent film A Dog’s Breakfast distributed on DVD on September 18 (see Solutions Blog story on the release). He’s already working on his next movie’s script, Design of the Dead, which Hewlett talked about in an interview at Eclipse Magazine: “I loved Evil Dead; I loved Fright Night. It’s just that I loved that kind of stuff. And then, strangely, I’m a fan of these Home & Garden kind of home renovation shows. In this bid to become kind of the Martha Stewart of horror, I’ve combined the two. It’s about a design show that goes into this house to give it a new life, and it ends up waking the dead. It’s a lot of fun to write. I’m halfway through it now, so we’ll see how much time I get to sit down and write the rest of it. Right now it’s called Design of the Dead. It just seems in keeping with the Romero films, and the obvious likeness would be Shaun of the Dead, as well. That was sort of an honest appreciation of zombie films — and I just want to make a funny one.”

Hewlett had also said in his blog that he was writing a part in the movie for Christopher Judge.

Hewlett and his partner Jane Loughman are expecting their first child very soon. While waiting, Hewlett quickly noted in his Twitter recently, “Baby really taking its time…going to do this “Helen” movie next week now!” This movie stars Ashley Judd and is scheduled to film from October 9 to December 11 in Vancouver.

Jewel Staite

Jewel Staite recently finished filming some scenes in Panama for her new movie The Tribe. In a recent interview at SCI FI WIRE, Staite revealed a little more about the film: “It’s basically about a girl who starts off as being very meek and kind of subservient and scared about life in general and then really has to step up to the plate and become the leader, become the alpha in the situation. So it was really fun to play. It was a really complex character, and, yeah, it should be coming out next summer.”

In her latest MySpace blog entry, Staite answered a few questions from her fans, one being about the roles she chooses to play: “I love that I get these smart women roles, but it’s also fun to play the helpless victim sometimes, when it’s written well. What’s really great is someone who starts out as helpless and grows into the hero. Or superhero. That flies. And kicks ass.”

Staite is scheduled to appear at the Collectormania 12 Convention in Milton Keynes, England (October 26-28).

Season Four Continues…

Season Four of Stargate Atlantis continues on the Sci Fi Channel on Friday, October 12, at 10pm Eastern, with “Reunion”.
