SGA S5: First Half Well on Its Way

The list of the titles of the first ten episodes for Season Five of Stargate Atlantis has been completed after the title of the mid-season finale was revealed by writer and producer Martin Gero in a recent Gateworld interview.

Keep in mind that production order and airing order may not be the same, but as of right now, here’s what we’ve got:

Col. Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) will only be in “Search and Rescue” for the first half of the season, but there is a promised return in the second half. In the meantime, Richard Woolsey (Robert Picardo) will be appearing in 14 of the 20 episodes of the new season. Dr. Carson Beckett (Paul McGillion) will be in “The Seed” and “Whispers”, with a promise of at least three more episodes for the season. And Dr. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) will finally be visiting the city that he discovered to do research in “First Contact” and the currently-untitled second-half premiere, both of which are being written by Martin Gero.

Filming for the new season started February 18 and is planned to end sometime around September 23. “Our [filming] hiatus is presently scheduled for early July,” said executive producer and co-showrunner Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog (March 25). As to whether or not the show would be impacted by the possible strike of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), Mallozzi informed his readers that five (out of six) of the show’s main cast members are SAG members (if a strike were to happen, it would start July 1).

According to Mallozzi, the new season “will focus on the changes in a post-Wraith ascendant Pegasus Galaxy.” We’ll see both Michael Kenmore (Connor Trinneer) and “Todd” the Wraith (Christopher Heyerdahl), as well as hear from the Travelers and Genii. Because the Wraith have been weakened, there will be hitherto unknown technologically-advanced groups to step up. Mallozzi said in an interview conducted for the recent issue of SciFi Magazine, “These races or societies are going to step to the forefront and make their presences felt in the Pegasus Galaxy. Whether they’ll be friends, foes, or a little of both remains to be seen. That’s sort of a general goal that we’re working towards for the show’s fifth season.”

SPOILERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE AS THE EPISODES ARE IN PRODUCTION.
