Jason Momoa's "Conan" Coming Summer 2011

According to this article at USA Today, Jason Momoa’s Conan will be released in the summer of 2011:

Robert E. Howard’s barbarian lives again in a new R-rated adventure that will be transferred into 3-D. The 6-foot-5 Hawaiian-born Jason Momoa (TV’s Baywatch) follows in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s muscular footsteps as the stoic Cimmerian who delivers payback for the murder of his father (Ron Perlman) and destruction of his village. “It’s a simple story of revenge and love,” says producer Avi Lerner, whose company also is doing a Red Sonja update and is eyeing a new Hercules. “Jason and Arnold are similar in that they are both very likable. The character is not always a nice person, yet the audience can forgive him for what he does.”

Those following Momoa’s Stargate Atlantis co-star David Hewlett on his Twitter were told that Hewlett got a chance to have dinner with Momoa on March 29 while both were in Bulgaria where Conan is filming. Hewlett himself just finished directing and acting in an “evil snow monkey” movie for Syfy, details for which are currently lacking.

Reception for Momoa as Conan the Barbarian has been mixed, but in a previous article at Comic Book Movie, Conan expert Patrice Louinet, “who has studied, worked on and edited the works of Conan creator Robert E. Howard for decades,” stated, “Got to see Fredrik Malmberg, who showed me a few pics – pre CGI – of Jason Momoa as Conan. Despite this, these pics were enough to convince me a bit more that Momoa is an excellent Conan, as far as his looks is concerned. He is very close to the character as described by Howard: he is hairy, dark, scarred and muscular yet lithe, devoid of the body-builder physique syndrome. Really impressive. More, Momoa has taken the Howard books with him, often reading a few passages for himself before shooting to get into his character.”
