Shanks is the voice of Local Custom

Michael Shanks becomes the voice of “Local Custom”
An excerpt from the article by Marla R. Reed, syndicated to Stargate SG-1 Solutions, 14 Feb 05

Actor Michael Shanks recently embarked on a new project in his career, a career that includes successful forays into classical theater, television and film work. His latest project is as narrator of the soon to be released Audio Novel version of the SF/Romance novel “Local Custom.”

“Local Custom,” which is the first of the seven books set in the Liaden Universe® written by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, tells a tale of Master trader Er Thom who knows the local custom of his people is to take a bride from a high Liaden family and provide his most revered clan Korval with a worthy heir. Yet a woman not of his culture or even of his world has captured his heart, a woman whom he discovers has borne his child and for which Er Thom is willing to risk his honor and reputation to be with.

As a narrator of “Local Custom,” Michael Shanks joins the ranks of other fellow “Stargate SG-1” cast members who have done audio novels before him. Ben Browder, who is joining the regular cast in season 9 as Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell, narrated “Interlopers” written by Alan Dean Foster, and veteran “Stargate SG-1” actor Tony Amendola, who plays recurring character Master Bra’tac, co-narrated “An Unfinished Life” written by Mark Spragg.

Did they have any advice for Shanks going into this project?

“Tony Amendola, who I respect tremendously as an actor, was telling me ‘don’t do that, I’m telling you don’t do it’,” Shanks says with a gentle laugh.

However Michael Shanks is also quick to inform you that he is a man who knows and accepts about himself that telling him NOT to do something is the quickest way to get him to do it or make him want to try it.

“And I said ‘Wow – Tony saying that…’ That’s something. I better go do that cause I wanna see what he’s talking about and I certainly found out the hard way.”

Shanks on recording Local Custom audiobook

“Local Custom” by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller

The first of the seven books set in the Liaden Universe tells a rich and sweeping story of warring families and star-crossed lovers in a fantastic, other-world galaxy.

Master trader Er Thom knows the local custom of Liaden is to be matched with a proper bride, and provide his prominent clan Korval with an heir. Yet his heart is immersed in another universe, influenced by another culture, and lost to a woman not of his world. And to take a Terran wife such as scholar Anne Davis is to risk his honor and reputation. But when he discovers that their brief encounter years before has resulted in the birth of a child, even more is at stake than anyone imagined. Now, an interstellar scandal has erupted, a bitter war between two families-galaxies apart-has begun, and the only hope for Er Thom and Anne is a sacrifice neither is prepared to make…

Shanks For The Memories
Dreamwatch #126, February 2005
Brief extract from the interview by Ian Spelling

Michael Shanks is about to record an audiobook adaptation of the SF novel “Local Custom”, by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. “It’s interesting,” Shanks notes. “I’m not a huge reader anymore. My wife [Andromeda actress Lexa Doig] is the reader of the family. I’m not into SF novels or anything like that. It was just the notion of, ‘Oh. I’d like to read an audiobook,’ and then once I started reading the book I realised what it was exactly that I’d signed up for.”

“It’s one of those books that has words with all the apostrophes in strange places and because it’s SF you know you can’t even draw on your experience of how to say Lithuania properly. It’ll actualyl say, ‘She’s from the planet Alph’ha’hey,’ and you’re thinking, ‘What? Is somebody around to tell me how I’m supposed to sat this?’ So I think it’s going to be tricky, to say the least, about narrating a SF audiobook, but it’s an experience I wanted to have.”

“I appreciate the notion of audiobooks for the visually impaired or, quite frankly, for those people who would rather listen than read. If anybody is going to buy this audiobook just to listen to me for three hours, well, God bless them.”

Narrated by Michael Shanks, “Local Custom” will be available as an unabridged 8-CD set from Buzzy Multimedia in May 2005. The usual cost for audiobooks is $47.95. Fans of Stargate SG-1’s newest cast member Ben Browder may be interested in his narration of “Interlopers” by Alan Dean Foster, also from Buzzy Multimedia.

Fake RDA autographs scam unearthed

We have today uncovered another apparent autograph scam involving Richard Dean Anderson’s signature and we need to bring this to everyone’s attention.

Specifically, there is a website called “mspgautographs.com” which is offering Richard Dean Anderson autographs on a ‘pre order’ basis at a price of £80 (yes, £80!!) The website claims these are from a ‘private MSPG signing’ with Richard. As our company has recently commenced a non-profit charity program for the sale of RDA’s autographs, we know that Richard is simply not engaged in any such activity other than with the Stargate.Autographs.com charity project

Having reviewed the website claims, I called Richard this afternoon to discuss this matter with him personally. He confirmed to me that he has NOT entered into any such arrangement with MSPG Autographs or any other company. At the same time, he expressed deep concern that such activity is taking place.

This matter has now been placed in the hands of Richard’s attorney, who I am confident will take appropriate measures.

Those of you that have visited the www.stargate-autographs.com website will have hopefully read Richard’s personal statement as to how he feels about fans getting ripped off by scams such as this. If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth the read!

I do apologise if our ‘fake SG autograph’ warnings may seem to be getting a little tedious, but we need forums like this to help spread the word. We are all sick and tired of fans putting out good money for worthless paper, which has motivated us to create a safe alternative.

I also wish to re-emphasise that our program is a non-profit venture and would like to remind fans that Richard has established the price of his autographed photo at $40 – not 80!! Also, please remember that EVERY PENNY of this goes to Richard’s charities.

Finally, we encourage you to contact us if you see any Stargate autographs that you feel are ‘questionable’. We shall be happy to help you distinguish between the good, the bad and the ugly!

If you’ve got this far down the page, thank you for taking the time to read this rather lengthy posting!

Best of the season to you all.

Fake Stargate autographs found in eBAY auction

Fake Stargate Autographs Warning

To all Stargate fans, especially those in Germany:

It has been brought to our attention that several Stargate autographs that are for sale on eBay Germany are possible fakes. Having inspected the items, we have determined that these items are indeed bogus. The person responsible for selling these items goes under the eBay “ID” as micha10-5 and the item numbers/links are as follows:

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=8726&item=6138476983&rd=1

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=8726&item=6138477180&rd=1

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=8726&item=6138477453&rd=1

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=8726&item=6138477811&rd=1

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=8726&item=6138477932&rd=1

Unfortunately, these items have been listed as a ‘private’ auction, which means we are unable to view the bidder ID’s to warn them.

The purpose of this notice is to caution fans and auction bidders from purchasing any Stargate autographs from this particular vendor. At the same time, extreme caution should be taken when purchasing any Stargate signatures online. Please be sure to try and verify the authenticity and in this regard, don’t hesitate to contact us if you want an authenticity opinion on any Stargate autographs that you are considering purchasing.

Those of you that know about our Stargate autographs project, will also know that this is a non-profit service we are providing to help charities and to stop fans from being ripped off by unscrupulous ‘merchants’ who are trying to capitalize on the popularity of Stargate – as illustrated above.

With kind regards,

Legends stargate-autographs.com Site Launched

PRESS RELEASE: For Immediate Release

LEGENDS MEMORABILIA LAUNCHES NEW CAST
AUTHORIZED WEBSITE FOR STARGATE AUTOGRAPHS

December 8, 2004 (Vancouver, B.C.): Legends Memorabilia Inc. and the cast of the globally popular MGM sci-fi television series Stargate SG-1, are pleased to announce the launch of an exclusive cast-authorized website for signed photographs and other memorabilia; http://www.stargate-autographs.com

This website offers fans a wide range of signed memorabilia items that have been supplied by the stars of the series, including Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping and Christopher Judge. The site will also include autographed items from many of the series’ recurring actors, as well as cast members from Stargate: Atlantis. Further detailed announcements with a full list of participants shall be released shortly.

The development of this project was inspired by the need to support various charities and to address the issue of the prolific number of fraudulent Stargate autographs that are in circulation, a matter which the cast members of Stargate have expressed concern about. In developing this program, Paul Brown, President of Legends Memorabilia, brought numerous examples of allegedly ‘signed’ photographs for sale on eBay and other Internet sites to the attention of the stars. After careful inspection, they concluded that virtually all of those items were either fake or ‘extremely questionable’.

“The Stargate actors don’t want their fans spending money on fraudulent memorabilia.” says Brown. “All items on this website will be personally autographed by the stars specifically for this program. Through this site we are giving the fans a one hundred percent guarantee that they are purchasing unquestionable, authentic signed photos, scripts and other autographed memorabilia”, he adds.

The second objective of this program is to support charity, a subject close to all of the Stargate actors. The prices for the autographs have been established by the stars themselves in consultation with Legends and the funds raised through this program will help support their individually selected charities.

A key element of this program is the participation of Richard Dean Anderson, who has offered the following comment in support of the project:

“Paul Brown’s explanation of why I have chosen to throw in with his company is accurate. Allow me to reiterate: It was brought to my attention that fans of Stargate, more specifically, Jack O’Neill, were shelling out good money for bad forgeries. The fact that fans were being duped pi**ed me off to no end!

Paul’s company, Legends Memorabilia, solves the problem for me completely. What you receive from Paul will have been signed by ME (my name is Richard Dean Anderson!) My arrangement with Legends is a clean, straight-forward proposition that deposits ALL monies collected into the hands of several charitable organizations I have supported over the decades. Those of you who know me, will know my intentions and most likely, for those who have followed closely, my motivation.

In anticipation of your involvement with Legends, please accept my heart-felt thanks. Also, I can only promise to try and improve my handwriting. Currently, it sucks! I will work on legibility first with signature styles….then content.

More life to you all!”

Richard

To certify the unquestionable authenticity of the items offered on www.stargate-autographs.com, each signed item is validated with an embossed seal, a hologram serial number and is accompanied with a registered Certificate of Authenticity. The website features an online shopping catalogue, individual ‘Star’ pages highlighting information on each cast member and their selected charities, as well as complete program details.

Legends Memorabilia Inc. has been providing distinctive memorabilia from the world of Entertainment, History and Sports since 1995. Through its subsidiary, http://www.stargateprops.com, Legends is the exclusive vendor for Stargate SG-1 set-used Props, Costumes and Studio Art and over the past 4 years, has developed a strong relationship with Stargate fans around the world. Legends has recently been appointed an official Licensee for the manufacture of replica props for Stargate SG-1 and limited edition art prints for Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis.

With clients in 60 countries worldwide, the company is a long-standing participant of the memorabilia dealer community and is a member of the governing bodies of the autograph industry: UACC, IACC/DA and The Manuscript Society. The ‘Stargate Autographs’ project is a non-profit program offered by Legends as a service to the fans, the stars and their charities.

Stargate Cast Support Charity Autographs Site

Actors from Stargate are taking part in a new project with two aims: to benefit charities and to stop dealers from selling fake autographs to fans. In conjunction with Legends Memorabilia, a number of actors including Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping and Chris Judge are selling signed photographs and scripts at www.stargate-autographs.com Every item comes with a certificate of authenticity and is guaranteed genuine.

Recently, the actors were shocked when they were made aware how many fake autographs are being sold on auction sites and through dealers. Legends, who have run charity auctions for Stargate and Andromeda, offered to provide a free service to help stamp out forgeries and raise money for causes chosen by the Stargate actors. The only extra charge on the autographed items will be postage to wherever you live; 100% of the profits go to charity.

This is your chance to support some very good causes and to own something special; photos being sold include signed group shots of SG-1, and for longtime RDA fans, there are signed photos of MacGyver as well as Jack O’Neill.

You may have noticed that Solutions have had several announcements about Legends Memorabilia of late. Why? Because we want fans to be able to buy safely from people who care about giving them genuine autographs and quality products. We have seen autographs on eBay and at cons which we knew were fake; in some cases it didn’t even look like the actor’s writing! The best way to stop this happening is for fans to have somewhere safe to buy autographs if they want them.

Similarly, we’ve seen some very poor homemade merchandise being sold as if it were licensed by MGM. It can be very hard to know from a small description on an auction site whether an item is worth having. If you buy from Legends you will get what you pay for and it will be good quality. Legends have supported a number of charity auctions at cons, and respect fans rather than exploiting them. We wish there were people like them working in other sci-fi fandoms.

Solutions would like to congratulate everyone involved in this project; sci-fi fans have been ripped off long enough and it’s great to see Legends and the Stargate cast working to help fans and charities. Please see our story SG-1 CAST ENDORSED STARGATEAUTOGRAPHS.COM LAUNCHES for a press release from Legends including a special message from Richard Dean Anderson.
