Jewel Staite on the End of Stargate

Jennifer Keller and Rodney McKay together in ENEMY AT THE GATE
Staite and Hewlett together again?
Stargate star Jewel Staite has posted her latest entry on Blastr, giving her thoughts on the end of the Stargate franchise:

Honestly, I can’t really believe it’s actually over. I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of a lot of cast and crews over the years, but I can truly say I’ll always look back on my time on SG:A with a special kind of fondness. That show was a total dream job for me—shooting in my hometown, sleeping in my own bed every night, working with a fabulous and hilarious cast and crew who made me laugh on an hourly basis, being handcuffed and kidnapped in the woods … Well, maybe not so much on that last part. Truthfully, I was accepted with open arms into that family, and I will always be so incredibly grateful and proud to be a part of it. And I hope the fans are proud, too, of all of those seasons of television they helped get produced. Without them, it wouldn’t have gone on as long as it did, and I really hope they know that. It’s their show more than it was ever ours, and I’m just so thankful I got to be along for the ride.

Just because the Stargate days are over, doesn’t mean that Jewel hasn’t had the opportunity to work with her former castmates. Staite let her fans in on a little secret that she and fellow Blastr blogger David Hewlett have been working together on a special project:

Lucky for me, and unlucky for him, David Hewlett was just as bored to tears as I was. So we decided to embark on a little super secret project of our own. I can’t tell you much about it, except that you may quite possibly love it. Or you may hate it, in which case, I’m going to go and join that tumbleweed in the middle of the road. Or move to England to be closer to Kate, whichever. Regardless, wish us luck, will you? And hopefully we’ll be able to show you something soon!

Staite has a busy convention appearance ahead of her next month, including Contagion in Omaha, Nebraska, from June 10-12, and Tulsa Trek in Tulsa, Oklahoma, from June 24-26 (Christopher Judge and Armin Shimerman also plan to be there).

As far as her wishlist of projects, Staite hopes she will work again with Amanda Tapping, perhaps making a guest appearance on Sanctuary, as well as with former Firefly co-star Morena Baccarin on V. At least the Sanctuary guest spot has potential, but unfortunately, ABC recently cancelled V at the end of its second season.

InnerSPACE Stargate Special to Air Tuesday, May 10

Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi just posted in his weblog, “…I hung around to do a quickie interview for Canada’s Space which will follow up Tuesday night’s series finale, Gauntlet, with a special Stargate-laden installment of Innerspace. From what I hear, they got A LOT of interviews with Stargate personalities – David Blue, David Hewlett, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, Louis Ferreira, Alaina Huffman, Brian J. Smith, and Jewel Staite (to name a few) – who’ll be talking about the franchise and its fans. Don’t miss it!”

Canada’s Spacecast airs Stargate Universe (their SGU page) at 10 PM ET and InnerSPACE follows directly at 11 PM ET (their InnerSPACE page). All of the Stargate shows have enjoyed impressive viewer numbers, and currently, SGU is Space’s “most-watched series.”

“Gauntlet” will be a cliffhanger, unfortunately, which Mallozzi described as being in the same category of cliffhanger as SG-1’s “Camelot,” SGA’s “The Siege II,” and SGU’s “Incursion II,” and gave this “fair warning” about the conclusion of the Stargate franchise “as we know it”: “Gauntlet, in particular, is very touching and its conclusion will no doubt you leave you…among many other things…frustrated, incredulous, outraged, offended, annoyed, vexed, saddened, distressed, bitter, aghast, irritated, unsatisfied, pissed-off, melancholy, miserable, confused, furious, dejected, riled, shocked, heartsick, angry, surprised, exasperated, indignant, enraged, despondent, bewildered, dismayed, incensed, stunned, and grief-stricken.”

Hopefully, seeing the Stargate stars from all three shows afterwards will help ease the Canadian fans’ pain.

Actor and Crew Updates

  • Not too long ago, JOE FLANIGAN mentioned in an interview, “I separated my shoulder in a mountain biking accident. I was coming down a single track trail at a furious speed – I just got brand new handle bars that were extra long – they snagged a branch and they just kind of threw me over and I landed on my back. I actually feel pretty damn lucky that it’s just an AC separation and not something more serious.” He went on with the injury to the Vancouver Stargate Con, and then he finally had the surgery on April 27. All is well, as the actor kept his fans updated on his Twitter (including providing a picture of him in his hospital bed), joking that on the day after, “My new breasts look great.”
  • MARK SAVELA did an interview with Sci Fi and TV Talk Blog about his prospect pilot Echoes. This production has several former Stargate cast and crew involved. They filmed a 13-minute prospect piece from the two-part pilot script, hoping to use it as a pitch for the creation of a new series. This crew is very well put together as they transfer their many years with Stargate into their own production. Echoes features JENNIFER SPENCE and MIKE DOPUD in leading roles.
  • BRIAN J. SMITH did an interview with Redeye Chicago/Show Patrol about his upcoming Syfy movie Red Faction: Origins. Smith declares that this movie is not going to be your typical “MOW” and that “It’s definitely quality and it has really, really smart minds behind it.” Stargate alum ROBERT PATRICK also stars. Red Faction: Origins premieres Saturday, June 4, at 9 PM ET.
  • CHRISTOPHER JUDGE and JEWEL STAITE are scheduled to be at the Tulsa Trek Expo in June, according to Tulsa World.
  • JASON MOMOA has been interviewed a lot recently, covering his roles of Khal Drogo in HBO’s Game of Thrones (currently airing on Sunday nights) and of Conan in the upcoming Conan the Barbarian movie (coming August 19). These interviews are indexed in our SOLUTIONS LJ here: Conan Movie and Game of Thrones.
  • MICHAEL SHANKS did a video interview while he was in France a few weekends ago for the SciFi15 convention. Solutions LJ has the embedded video in which Shanks discusses Stargate and his most recent projects.
  • MING-NA is back in Vancouver shooting her recurring role in Syfy’s Eureka. Her new role is Alice Wen, a senator who arrives in Eureka to handle a sensitive matter within Global Dynamics.

Calendar

Monday,   March 28 Stargate Universe on Syfy at 10 PM ET with “Hope.”

Showcase EndgameMichael Shanks guest stars tonight at 10 PM ET/PT in the episode “The Caffeine Hit” of Canada’s new Showcase show Endgame. One of Stargate‘s guest stars is part of the regular cast, Veena Sood, who’s played an Abydonian and Dr. Kelly in episodes of SG-1. The show centers around the Russian-born former World Chess Champion Arkady Balagan, who, after witnessing the assassination of his fiancée and her high school friend in Vancouver, has become agoraphobic. He doesn’t leave the hotel where he lives. Such a life has caused him to amass a debt, so as a way to earn money, he uses his brilliant mind to solve mysteries. He has friends and associates, many who manage or work in the hotel in which he lives, who help him in his investigations. In “The Caffeine Hit,” Shanks plays “a desperate amnesiac” for whom Balagan “begins to unravel the man’s complicated identity.” When Shanks told his official website (MSOL) about the role, he mentioned that his character Casey Roman “finds out he may have been a real asshole.” MSOL has images of Shanks in his role as Roman in their gallery, but beware of spoilers! The episode will repeat on Thursday and Sunday. Visit their official website for more details.

Jason Momoa as Conan

Jason Momoa will receive the 2011 CinemaCon Rising Star Award at the Caesars Palace in Las Vegas tonight. CinemaCon managing director Mitch Neuhauser said, “Bringing with him an already loyal fanbase from Stargate: Atlantis, Jason Momoa is sure to entertain audiences in the action adventure Conan the Barbarian. We can’t wait to see what this new leading action star will do in the future.” Not only does Momoa have the starring role in Conan the Barbarian, but he also has a recurring role in HBO’s new Game of Thrones series that will be premiering April 17. You’ll find links of interest for Momoa’s projects here at Solutions on his homepage in our Actors…Beyond the Event Horizon feature.

Friday,     April 1 Lou Diamond PhillipsLou Diamond Phillips is the host of a new franchise on the Military Channel that premieres tonight: An Officer and a Movie. Per the Military Channel’s press release, each installment “pairs Phillips with retired and active duty officers who lived through major battles or have an expertise in the conflicts depicted in notable Hollywood films. As each film makes its Military Channel premiere, AN OFFICER AND A MOVIE provides expert commentary that can only come from being ‘on the ground’ during the action as these officers reflect on the themes of that night’s film and also provide personal insight that puts each movie into a modern context.” In tonight’s movie at 8 PM ET, Phillips and retired Marine Col. Arthur Athens “discuss the themes behind the 1979 classic film The Great Santini, starring Robert Duvall, who was nominated for an Academy Award for this role. As the director of the U.S. Naval Academy’s Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership, the former Commandant of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Athens is uniquely able to comment on what it means to be a leader in the military and within a family’s home, where in his own life he has ten children.” For more on the airing schedule, visit http://military.discovery.com/.
Saturday,   April 2
Sunday,    April 3 HBO Game of Thrones PosterHBO will be airing a preview of Game of Thrones tonight at 9 PM ET. If you miss it, it will be available afterwards online and on demand. Martin book series A Song of Fire and Ice and is named after the first book, A Game of Thrones. As with Stargate, there exist several fan websites for the new show, two of them being Westeros.org and Winter-Is-Coming.net. HBO also has an official website. Stargate Planner: Week of January 17-23

We’ll update this article if something comes to our attention during the week. Also, if you’ve got more to add, please don’t hesitate to announce them in the comment section below.

Calendar

Monday,   January 17 Today is David Blue‘s birthday.
Tuesday,   January 18
Wednesday, January 19 Today is Rachel Luttrell‘s birthday.
Thursday,   January 20 Tonight at 10/9c is the premiere of the new USA network series Fairly Legal in which Richard Dean Anderson will be making five appearances over the first season as David Smith. Fairly Legal is the new title of the series; it was formerly called Facing Kate. The pilot is 90 minutes and the remaining nine episodes will be one hour each. The premise: “Kate Reed (Sarah Shahi) is a firm believer that justice can always be found-even if it’s not always in the courtroom. Once a lawyer at her family’s esteemed San Francisco firm, Kate’s frustration with the legal system led her to a new career as a mediator. Thanks to her innate understanding of human nature, thorough legal knowledge, and wry sense of humor, Kate is a natural when it comes to dispute resolution. Except, it seems, when it comes to conflicts in her own life” (Show’s official homepage).

Beau Bridges will be among the hosts at the premiere of the documentary Elephants and Man: A Litany of Tragedy at Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood.

From PR-USA: The film, executive produced by Melya Kaplan and directed by Jacek Kropinski, chronicles the history of elephants in captivity. Kaplan, founder of the nonprofit Voice for the Animals Foundation, contends that zoos and circuses are not capable of properly caring for elephants due to their size and their need for vast amounts of space in which to roam. Many celebrities have joined Kaplan in a campaign to persuade zoos to close elephant exhibits and transfer the pachyderms to larger sanctuaries.

The host committee for the premiere of “Elephants and Man” includes Cher, Alec Baldwin, Kathy Griffin, Billy Bob Thornton, Jane Fonda, Robin Williams, Ed Begley, Jr., Paul Haggis, Fisher Stevens, Ric O’Barry, Karen Black, Lainie Kazan, Ken Davitian, Sally Field, Beau Bridges and others. Special guests will include actresses Lily Tomlin and Tippi Hedren, who have been outspoken on the issue of elephants in captivity. They will participate in a panel discussion, which will follow the screening.

Sunday, January 23 Today is Richard Dean Anderson‘s birthday.

Reminder: Jewel Staite in Hallmark's "Call Me Mrs. Miracle" Tonight

Here’s a quick reminder that Stargate star Jewel Staite will be in the new Hallmark Channel movie Call Me Mrs. Miracle tonight at 8/7c!

From the movie’s About page:

No one celebrates the holidays like Emily Merkle (Doris Roberts)—or Mrs. Miracle as she is known by some—who is back to ensure that this Christmas is the most magical and meaningful of all. When Mrs. Miracle appears as a seasonal employee in the toy department at the financially troubled Finley’s Department Store, neither the store’s owners, nor the customers, have any idea of the events that are about to unfold. Just when it seemed Christmas might not come at all this year, Finley’s favorite employee proves they don’t call her Mrs. Miracle for nothing!

Joing Roberts and Staite in the movie’s cast are Eric Johnson (currently seen as Detective Luke Callaghan in ABC’s Rookie Blue; formerly of Syfy’s Flash Gordon) and Lauren Holly (Chicago Hope, Picket Fences; co-owner of the production company Hollycould Productions).

Hallmark will be repeating Call Me Mrs. Miracle several times over the next few weeks in celebration of the Christmas holiday season. Check your local listings for times.

My 4 adopted children are more mature than I am. Need to put on game face and pretend to be my age.” Filming is scheduled to wrap September 26.
