Stargate Universe: Robert Carlyle Wins Gemini Award

Congratulations go to Stargate Universe star Robert Carlyle who won the 2010 Gemini Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role for the first season episode “Human”.

The episode, written by freelancer Jeff Vlaming and directed by Robert C. Cooper, centered on Carlyle’s character Dr. Nicholas Rush as he navigated his way through painful memories of his wife’s illness and death while interfacing with the Destiny. It was an emotional roller-coaster for Rush, and Carlyle’s performance was well deserving of this recognition.

The newest edition to the Stargate franchise was nominated for nine Gemini Awards this year, but Carlyle’s is the only one taken home this time around.

Carlyle and the rest of the SGU cast and crew are currently filming the Season Two finale, “Gauntlet”, and will be wrapping principal photography very soon. Word from Syfy concerning renewal could come as late as January 2011. Until then, new episodes are being aired first on Syfy on Tuesdays at 9 PM ET.

Stargate Universe: 2.07 "The Greater Good"

Young and Rush board derelict spaceship in THE GREATER GOOD (MGM)
Rush gets sidetracked when he and Young board a derelict spaceship in THE GREATER GOOD (MGM)
Tonight (November 9) on Syfy at 9 PM ET: Stargate Universe episode 2.07 “The Greater Good”, written by Carl Binder and directed by William Waring.

“Always consider the greater good. That’s it,” Dr. Nicholas Rush advised Lt. Tamara Johansen when she was given command of Destiny for the first time.

These may sound like wise words, but considering the source, one does have to question his sincerity considering that he’s hiding the discovery of the ship’s master code, its bridge, and how to control when the Destiny enters and exits FTL. There are still several systems to discover and gain control of, evident by the number of empty seats on the bridge, but Rush is of the mind-set that “Ultimately, I control this ship.” He wants to continue to sit on the bridge alone and in command. But Destiny itself has shown that it has its own agenda. After the revelation that the ship can play the “what if” game within Young’s mind to test his command capability, what’s to say that the ship isn’t manipulating Rush similarly?

Actor Robert Carlyle loves talking about this episode and the one that follows, especially since they delve into where Rush stands in Season Two. He’s on the verge of discovering Destiny‘s mission, and he’s made this discovery his and Chloe’s highest priority.

“I can’t tell you what the mission is,” Carlyle teased in an interview with The Flick Cast, “but I can tell you there is a mission and it’s massive. The clue is in the title of the ship: Destiny. The ship is named that for a reason and perhaps all of these people are there for a reason. It starts to really become an adventure.”

After getting in on the beginning of the crew’s new adventure, make sure to rejoin us here for our episode poll on the front page.

SYFY: Dr. Rush and Col. Young are stranded aboard an alien ship.

Destiny comes upon a heavily damaged ship floating in space. Dr. Rush suggests that the alien vessel be explored in the hopes of salvaging any worthwhile data or technology. Without a shuttle, Rush and Col. Young must make a dangerous space-suited expedition to the derelict ship. Once safely aboard, they discover that the ship contains empty pods similar to those they encountered on the seed ship. As Dr. Rush gets the life support and power running, the ship’s engines suddenly engage, propelling it away from Destiny. With the power now depleted the ships drift helplessly apart.

Unwilling to tell everyone that he has partial control of the Destiny, Rush claims he has been working on a program to manually fire Destiny‘s thrusters. Because of the complexity of the program he suggests Dr. Amanda Perry be brought on board via the communication stones to help. Once aboard, Rush covertly informs her of his success with Destiny‘s master code and directs her to the bridge. With Rush’s help, Perry is able to steer Destiny back to the damaged ship. But when Eli unearths their plan, the big secret is revealed much to Rush’s chagrin—especially when Young finds out.

SKY: The Destiny is left stranded in space after an encounter with a damaged ship. While Young goes into panic mode, Rush refuses to divulge a valuable secret.

When the Destiny encounters a damaged ship, Rush and Col Young climb onboard to see if any worthwhile technology can be salvaged. But as the Doc gets the power up and running, the ship’s engines suddenly engage, propelling it away from the Destiny and leaving it stranded in space. If he isn’t able to direct his fans via Twitter when his episodes will air, we’ll just have to keep our eyes open for him at 9 PM ET on Wednesday nights on The CW. If we do happen to miss his appearance, The CW posts full episodes online for later viewing.

Stargate Universe: 2.04 "Pathogen"

Chloe Armstrong in PATHOGEN
Something's not quite right with Chloe in PATHOGEN
Tonight (October 19) on Syfy at 9 PM ET: Stargate Universe episode 2.04 “Pathogen”, written by Carl Binder and directed by series lead actor Robert Carlyle.

“Oh! He was a fantastic director,” Brian J. Smith told Den of Geek about his experience with co-star Robert Carlyle’s helming the episode from both in front of and behind the camera. “He’s an actor, so he gets it. He understands what you’re going through as an actor and the fears you may have about the scene or yourself. He creates an atmosphere where you feel safe and you feel loved, and that you can’t really do anything wrong, which is the best kind of way to work because you’re not censoring yourself.

“He was great, he would come up to us and give us notes that were so smart and so human and so actable. The episode he had to work on, was a beautiful episode and a very intimate episode but also one that’s setting up a lot of stuff that’s going to be a major problem down the road. So, it was a big responsibility for him, but it was kind of funny to watch him having to wear two hats. He’ll be standing there in costume trying to hit his mark and act the scene out and then have to yell cut [laughs] and go talk to the DP and figure out what shot to do next and stuff like that. It was a trip, but he was fantastic. He really hit it out of the park and did a great job.”

This episode touches on a mystery that we’ve been watching since the beginning of the season when Chloe somehow miraculously healed from the gunshot wound to her leg. Finally, after it appears that some of the dust has settled from the Lucian Alliance incursion and from the encounters with one of the Ancients’ seeder ships and an alien team already aboard it—plus the loss of Colonel David Telford—we’ll see what has made Chloe superhuman. Based on the name of the episode, is sounds like she’s been infected with an alien pathogen, but from where? Stargate Atlantis fans may recall that Dr. Jennifer Keller was exposed to a Wraith pathogen that began to use her as the seed toward creating a living hive ship, so whatever’s in store for Chloe, her exposure could be just as tragic and deadly.

David Blue further added to the mystery of this episode when he told IGN, “It was probably the most emotional thing I’ve ever done.”

“It was fantastic working with David on that episode,” actor/director Carlyle added. He then revealed that this was the first time he’s directed a television episode, his experience having previously been limited to theater productions.

“Yep, Robert Carlyle is directing the first episode on the production schedule – which actually happens to be episode 4 in the airing schedule, Pathogen,” executive producer Joseph Mallozzi informed his weblog readers. “No need to be gentle with Bobby. He’s incredibly well-prepared, knows the shots he wants and, more importantly, knows how to get them. He’s also got a fantastic cast and crew backing him up. And the dailies look great!”

See for yourself tonight, and then afterwards, make sure to rejoin us here for our episode poll on the front page.
From Sky Programme Information: Anticipation is high for this second season standout directed by the space drama’s leading man, Robert Carlyle.

Stepping behind the camera, Carlyle cuts his teeth with an episode revolving around Chloe’s increasingly erratic behaviour. While searching her quarters, a worried Scott makes a shocking discovery: a journal with alien script. Scott shows it to Young and Rush, and the latter is particularly intrigued. Recognising the complexity of the journal’s contents, he asks Chloe to look at some mathematical problems he’s been working on, with surprising results. Meanwhile, Eli is called back to Earth to deal with his mother’s worsening medical condition.
Stargate Universe Premiere: 2.01 "Intervention"

Intervention
What form of an INTERVENTION will save Col. Young and others from the Lucian Alliance?
The wait is almost over! Stargate Universe returns to Syfy at 9 PM ET tonight (September 28) with episode 2.01 “Intervention”!

Season Two’s premiere episode was written by Paul Mullie (and Joseph Mallozzi) and directed by Andy Mikita. According to Mallozzi, the episode brings “the events of Incursion I and II…to an explosive conclusion” and is “chock full of great character moments.”

For sure, there are lots of questions that need to be answered concerning the condition of both Destiny and her crew who are at the mercy of strong forces from within and without:

Will Eli make it in time to let Scott and Greer back into the ship? Will Dannic execute Colonel Young and his military subordinates? Will Chloe be rescued in time? Will TJ and her baby survive the gunshot wound? Will Telford, Kiva, and Riley survive their injuries? Will Rush and Brody regain control of the ship from the Lucian Alliance? What will become of the civilians? Will the ship jump back into FTL before the next deadly radioactive blast from the pulsar?

After you’ve seen the episode, make sure to rejoin us here for our episode poll on the front page.

Link and Spoiler Collection
Control of the Destiny hangs in the balance as the battle continues between the crew and the Lucian Alliance.

Colonel Young and most of his military personnel are held at gunpoint by the Lucian Alliance. Dannic intends to kill them but is convinced by Varro, a fellow Lucian, to exile them instead. Dannic agrees and the group is forced to travel through the Stargate to a rocky, uninviting planet. Shortly after arrival, they are joined by Varro and his men who have been deemed as traitors and also banished. When a deadly electrical storm begins to brew, all must work together to find safe shelter and survive.

Dr. Rush, Brody, Chloe and Eli have sealed themselves off in the hydroponics lab and have managed to obtain some control of the ship’s power. Dr. Rush conceives a risky plan to force Varro and the Alliance to surrender by draining the power from most of the ship’s shields. He informs Varro that when the next energy blast from the binary pulsar hits, everyone other than those in the lab will be killed by the radiation. An enraged Dannic refuses to back down, no matter what the cost.
