Trapped along with Teal'c and Vala far beneath England's Glastonbury Tor, Daniel and Mitchell have only seconds to outwit the Ancient snares in which they're caught. Once they succeed, they have to handle only one or two more small details — such as a near-impossible swordfight with an inhuman knight — before they win access to the cave's vast treasure.

Amid the standard-issue gold and jewels, Daniel uncovers a book apparently written by the Ancients. He reads a fantastic tale: The highly advanced Ancients may have once called themselves the Altera, and may have evolved in a far distant galaxy. The crew excavating the treasure also finds a piece of Ancient equipment, which Daniel believes is a communications device.

The following is a collection of spoilers gathered from various sources. Keep in mind that these interpretations are subject to change. Some of the events listed below most likely occur in the previous episode, 9.01 "Avalon Part 1".
Always eager to uncover more secrets of the Ancients, and excited by the possibility of visiting galaxies beyond the reach of the Stargates, Daniel persuades Mitchell and Gen. Landry to let him test the machine.

Gen. Jack O'Neill has been promoted and now runs Homeworld Security, a position formerly occupied by Gen. George Hammond. He hand-picked Maj. Gen. Hank Landry to take his place at Stargate Command (SGC).
Within seconds, he and Vala — whose lives are still bound to one another by the Jaffa bracelets — drop to the floor, unconscious. Already developing a keen sense of how things work at Stargate Command, Mitchell deduces that this is a bad sign and puts the two under medical supervision. Similarly worried, Teal'c skips a critical meeting of the new Jaffa council to stay by his friend Daniel's side.

Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell led the F-302 squadron in the Antarctic when Anubis attacked Earth (7.22 "Lost City Part 2"). He was gravely injured in the battle and was promised a position on SG-1 once he recovered from his injuries. He endured about a year of physical therapy, but made a complete recovery. Upon his arrival at the SGC, he finds that there is no longer a unit called "SG-1". The former members of the team, Lt. Col. Samantha Carter, Dr. Daniel Jackson, and Teal'c, have gone to on to other assignments. Gen. Landry hands Mitchell a stack of personnel folders and instructs him to pick the members of his new team.
Meanwhile, Daniel and Vala find themselves inhabiting the bodies of two married villagers on a distant planet. Being married to Vala — in even the remotest possible sense — gives Daniel the creeps, even before he learns that the villagers are devout worshippers of all-powerful and unforgiving beings called the Ori. What's worse, the two people whose bodies Daniel and Vala are inhabiting are suspected of heresy against these mysterious gods.

Lt. Col. Samantha Carter is overseeing projects at Area 51 in Nevada and has been looking after Cassandra Fraiser after the young woman encounters some difficulties in her life (Cassandra is the adopted daughter of the late Dr. Janet Fraiser, Carter's good friend who died in the line of duty in the episode, 7.18 "Heroes Part 2".) She is not readily available to return to the SGC when Mitchell starts to ask the former members of the elite team if they will return to SG-1 under his command.
Before long, Vala ends up chained to a sacrificial altar, about to be burned to death by the village's Administrator and his fanatical followers. Restrained by the vehement villagers, there's nothing Daniel can do but watch in horror as the flames are lit. Back on Earth, Mitchell and the others are watching, too, as Vala slips toward death. Because of the bracelets, if she dies, so will Daniel. Apparently, only divine intervention can save the pair now....

Teal'c is a member of the Free Jaffa Nation's High Council and lives on the planet Dakara. There are many political issues being faced by the Free Jaffa as they attempt to make themselves into a cohesive nation of diverse peoples, many of whom had encountered each other in battle when they served their former masters, the Goa'uld.

Dr. Daniel Jackson wants to go to Atlantis. He has been trying to go ever since he discovered the Ancients took their great city-ship, Atlantis, to the Pegasus Galaxy. Over a year ago, an expedition team went through the Stargate to the destination he had discovered, but Jack refused to let him go because the trip was most likely to be one-way for a very long time and he needed Daniel there in their fight against the Goa'uld (''Stargate Atlantis'': "Rising"). Now that the Goa'uld System Lords have been defeated, the Jaffa have been freed, the Replicators have been annihilated, and Anubis removed (in an eternal struggle with Oma Desala on the ascended plane), the Milky Way Galaxy is finally seeing a peace it had not seen for thousands of years (8.17 "Reckoning Part 2", 8.18 "Threads"). Daniel tried to get to the Pegasus Galaxy onboard the ''Prometheus'', but that mission was aborted after a space pirate named Vala hijacked the ship and attempted to sell it. The ship was damaged in a fight with death gliders and al'kesh mid-range bombers, and had to return to Earth for repairs. (8.12 "Prometheus Unbound") Now, the ''Daedalus'' spaceship can take him to Atlantis (8.19 "Moebius Part 1").

Dr. Carolyn Lam is a civilian physician assigned to the SGC. She is also the daughter of Gen. Landry and a former love interest of Cameron Mitchell.

Vala shows up at the SGC and gets involved in finding the mythical Avalon of Arthurian legend.

Somehow, Mitchell pursuades Daniel and Teal'c to go on this mission with him and Vala and the four set off together. They discover that Avalon was of the Ancients, just like Atlantis had been.

Their destination appears to be a cave comprised of chambers. Each chamber presents a different challenge.
* Mitchell encounters a holographic image of Merlin and pulls the sword out of the stone (most likely "Excalibur"). He engages in a broadsword fight with a medieval knight and apparently survives the encounter.
* Mitchell and Teal'c get trapped in a room with the ceiling coming down on them and Daniel must solve a riddle in order to stop the ceiling and free his friends before they are squashed.
* Daniel and Vala find a chamber where stones are placed into a device (they might be trapped in this chamber and decide to activate the device to get out). They are rendered unconscious, but their minds are linked to Ancients named Harrid and Sallis, a married couple who live on the planet Celestis in a far galaxy.

Précis

Still in the underground caverns of Avalon, the team faces several challenges to prove their worthiness and scholarship as a test to access the knowledge of the Ancients who returned to Earth 10,000 years ago. The thrill of success is soon replaced with fear and uncertainty after Daniel and Vala activate a newly-discovered Ancient device.
