Part 2 of Season Nine's two-part cliffhanger. (Written by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie)

"Also started beating out Camelot." — Joseph Mallozzi in his GateWorld Blog, August 23.

"Camelot is the name of the stronghold of the legendary King Arthur, from which he fought many of the battles that made up his life. Its specific location is currently unknown and may be a fictionalized Romano-British province of post-Roman Britain. It is described as many days' journey from Avalon. Various stories present Camelot's court in varying ways, anything from welcoming followers of both the Celtic and the Christian gods, to exclusively one or the other. Since the location of Camelot is still a mystery, the truth about it—if there is one—is still unknown." — WikiPedia, the free encyclopedia.

STORYLINE:

SG-1 discusses the legend of Arthur with Meurik, the governor of the medieval village, Camelot. Meurik is surprised to learn that the legend of Arthur has spread beyond their world. They are joined by Antonius, the village historian. The team learns from them that in their version of history, Arthur triumphed at Camlan rather than being mortally wounded by Mordred as in the Earth version. The villagers believe that Arthur left after his victory to search for the Holy Grail, and that when he finds it, he will return to them. Meurik also believes that the Ori are not a risk to their village.

According to the villagers, Merlin was the product of a human and a demon and therefore was capable of much mischief in spite of being Arthur’s trusted friend.

Antonius tells SG-1 that Merlin left behind a library, his private sanctuary. However it is protected by a powerful curse and a guardian: a black knight.

SG-1 learns about a key to the library from Valencia, a teenage girl who is an excellent swordsman. Once they know about the key, SG-1 is able to convince Antonius to help them get into the library, where they find a secret passageway behind a shelf of books. The passageway leads to a chamber with Ancient technology. However, the black knight has been awakened and must be dealt with.

"The director's cut of Camelot will soon follow. Speaking of which, Michelle [Michelle Comens, VFX Producer] showed us the animatics [previsualizations, film reel: animation of storyboard illustrations which might also include music, sound effects, and dialog] for the space battle and EVA [Extravehicular Activity: spacewalk] sequence today. They're going to be great. Also, checked out dailies today. Ben [Browder] [...] was getting good and muddy showing off his mad sword skills. John Noble (aka Denethor from Lord of the Rings) and Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps) guest star." — Joseph Mallozzi in his GateWorld Blog, October 4.

According to John Noble's website, www.johnnoble.net, Noble has been cast to play Meurik, the governor of the medeival village on an alien planet. He is courteous, intelligent, and strong, but dismisses the threat of the Ori. He strongly believes that King Arthur will return to his throne after finding the "sangraal" (Holy Grail). He becomes furious with Daniel and Mitchell after they disobey his orders and gain access to Merlin's library and release the Black Knight. After Mitchell impresses him with apparently vanquishing the Black Knight, Meurik offers Daniel and Mitchell his village's hospitality until Arthur returns with the sangraal.

"Just finished watching the director's cut of Camelot. Well, not exactly. I just got off the phone with Martin Wood, congratulating him on the terrific job he did on Camelot - which I just finished watching. It's huge in scope and really feels like a two-parter. There's so much going on including that swordfight I mentioned in a previous blog. HOLY CRAP does Ben take some punishment in this one. He lays it all out and, well, kicks ass. He's been an incredible addition to the show. Michael is also great in this one - determined, occasionally flustered, occasionally cool, and funny. Amanda gets to play both the scientist and the adventurer, while Chris gets to do some throwing down himself. Overall, a terrific season (let's hope not a series) ender." — Joseph Mallozzi in his GateWorld Blog, October 12.

In answer to a question on his Q&A thread in the GateWorld Forum, Joseph Mallozzi said that the Asgard drop in to lend a hand in this episode, which is now in post-production (October 21).

"Lots to look forward to: holograms and horses, a gathering of allies, hope and despair, death and destruction, and an uncertain future." — Joseph Mallozzi, September 17 Blog.

In a GateWorld interview, Ben Browder stated concerning the cliffhanger: "I'm still waiting to find out whether I'm alive or not!"

The interview also implies that Browder does his sword fight against the Black Knight in eight inches of mud.

"Earth's ships and several allied vessels flex their collective muscles in Camelot, the big SG-1 season 9 season finale." — Joseph Mallozzi in his GateWorld Q&A, November 27.

"They'll be gaining an unlikely ally at the end of season 9. Keeping that ally will be the problem." — Joseph Mallozzi in his GateWorld Q&A, November 28.

From TV Zone #67: Joseph Mallozzi: "In that one [Camelot], a gate address leads our heroes to an alien version of Camelot in search of a device created by Merlin (one of the Ascended Ancients) that would purportedly allow us to take out the Ori. We could be too late, though, as the Ori have started building another space gate, as they tried to do before in Beachhead [9.06], to travel to our galaxy."

As for what happens next, no one is saying much. "It's your classic end of season cliffhanger episode where it appears as though everybody may be dead," notes Paul Mullie. "The last shot in Camelot brings back a much loved and much hated character who we haven't seen in a while and leaves a giant gaping hole in the story that we will have to address at the start of season 10." [Thanks to Sandra for the quotes.]
