Alekos of Argos

Summary

Alekos is a native of Argos, a planet on which all the inhabitants were aged years in days and died at 100 days old in the Season One episode, 1.09 "Brief Candle."

Biography

Alekos is a native of Argos, a planet used by the Goa'uld Pelops as a laboratory for his human genetics experiments. Pelops impersonated a Greek god, so the décor of the temple in which the stargate is situated reflects an ancient Greek culture, similar to a citadel of Mycanae in the southern Peloponnese region of ancient Greece. Alekos dressed in the manner of an ancient Greek man with a purple toga and he wore a wreath of leaves on his head. He was praying before the statue of Pelops when SG-1 arrived and hid from them behind one of the columns of the temple. Alekos had brought his wife, Thetys, to the temple to seek Pelops' help in the birth of their first child. They were too far from their village to have a midwife assist in the birth, so Daniel Jackson helped deliver the baby, a boy whom they named "Dan-El" after Jackson in honor of his aid.

Alekos and Thetys took SG-1 to their village where several young, beautiful people were celebrating. Colonel Jack O'Neill accidently got himself married to one of the natives, Kynthia, and was led inside a building to consummate their union. Alekos distracted the rest of SG-1 and told them that the creator had given each man one hundred blissful days and that it would be a sin to not celebrate each and every one of them. Jackson thought that Alekos was telling them that there was going to be a hundred-day celebration.

Through his intimate physical contact with Kynthia, O'Neill seemingly contracted an illness which was suffered by all the natives of the village: they would all go to sleep at the same time at sunset and they would all arise simultaneously at sunrise. Upon discovering this strange phenomenon, O'Neill ordered the rest of the team to find the answers. He sent Jackson and Teal'c back to the temple where the stargate was and he told Carter to gather information in the village.

Alekos spent time with Jackson and Teal'c in the temple and explained the history of their people. He told of their creator, Pelops, who called the natives of Argos the "Chosen". It was the Chosen's duty to look after the temple while Pelops was away and to celebrate each day of their lives. Alekos knew that his ancestors were brought to Argos "from beyond the stars." Jackson and Teal'c discovered a hidden tablet which chronicled Pelops' activities on the planet. Combining their research with that of Carter's, they were able to determine that Pelops had used the people of Argos as lab rats in his experiment to discover how humans would evolve by accelerating the aging process through the use of nanotechnology.

After O'Neill sent the rest of SG-1 back to Earth to find a cure for his rapid aging, Alekos spent some time with him in the temple. He found it difficult to grasp that O'Neill had already lived thousands of days. When O'Neill asked him what he'd do if he lived a longer life, Alekos excitedly related that he'd explore beyond the borders of the Chosen and then share his knowledge with the others. He wanted that knowledge to grow and to be passed down to each generation.

When Alekos and his fellow Argosians brought food offerings for Pelops in the temple where O'Neill was staying, O'Neill told them that the statue was not alive and that Pelops had brought them there as slaves and abandoned them. Alekos angrily refused to be a slave and, by showing strong leadership abilities, incited his fellow Argosians to tear down the statue. The destruction of the statue damaged the technology Pelops had used to control the Argosians' sleep cycle and eventually, SG-1 was able to override the nanotechnology and render it useless. Thus, Alekos and the rest of the Argosians would age at a normal human rate from that moment on. O'Neill promised that the SGC would check on them to see how they were managing with their longer lives.
