SG teams are usually composed of four members. Each team is designated as SG-x where x is the unit number. Some SG teams are designed for specific functions, such as first contact, military back-up, engineering, archaeological expeditions, or diplomacy.
Initially, in the pilot episode, Children of the Gods, there were nine SG teams. By the seventh season episode, Death Knell, there were over 20.
