Hak'tyl High Council

Summary

The Hak'tyl, led by Ishta, were a group of female Jaffa priestesses who rebelled against their Goa'uld Moloc by taking all female Jaffa into sanctuary instead of putting them to death. Eventually, the Hak'tyl became a powerful force in the Rebel Jaffa movement and one of their number, Ka'lel, was a representative on the Council for the Free Jaffa Nation.

(Editor's Note: Even though the show has used the Hak'tyl name interchangably with varying spellings, purely for purposes of distinction, Haktyl is a reference to the planet, Hak'tyl is a reference to the people).

History of the Hak'tyl

The Beginnings

Hak'tyl

Ishta started the Hak'tyl over thirty years ago when the Goa'uld Moloc, convinced that more male Jaffa would be the key to his dominance, ordered any female Jaffa infants be put to death in a ceremony of fire (7.10 "Birthright"). Appalled by these orders, she, along with her seconds Mala and Neith, went to the different planets under Moloc's rule and collected these female Jaffa and brought them to an uninhabited planet to raise the girls without threat of death. The parents did not know the fate of their daughters. Ishta's people named their settlement "Haktyl", meaning "liberation".

Over the decades, as the girls grew and Ishta and her priestesses collected more of the infants, a whole colony of female warriors developed. As the girls reached puberty, they needed a primta symbiote or else they would die–a quirk of the Goa'ulds manipulation of Jaffa biology. The women would go on raids and steal primtas from Jaffa warriors they wounded or killed. However these raids were not without risk, and some of the Hak'tyl were killed during them.

Tau'ri Alliance

In their travels, Ishta learned of the Sholva Teal'c and SG-1 who fought the Goa'uld. Learning where SG-1 would be offworld, the women warriors saved the team from an ambush and brought them to Hak'tyl to discuss an alliance. Teal'c was disgusted at their method of scavenging primtas, but was sympathetic when he realized the cause. The Jaffa were more comfortable negotiating with Carter as the female member of the team. She thought they were asking to overthrow Moloc, but the Hak'tyl were more interested in supplies such as food to help their growing population and weapons to use on more raids.

Hak'tyl council

Sam explained how the Tok'ra had developed tretonin to help wean the Jaffa off their independence on Goa'uld symbiotes. The Hak'tyl leaders were skeptical of this claim, but Teal'c tried to speak to Ish'ta directly. During sparring, she was shocked to discover Teal'c himself was on tretonin, but was too ashamed to admit it directly. However, she reconsidered and brought it up to the group as a whole. Some volunteers, including her second, Mala, went back to the SGC to try the experimental tretonin treatment.

Mala died, despite Dr. Janet Fraiser's best efforts. However, the rest were showing positive results. Neith, skeptical at the first at this alliance, decided to challenge Ishta's leadership directly in the right of jomo secu. During the battle, Daniel received word of Mala's death. Ishta was at first enraged at the death of her friend and sister-in-arms joined Neith on a raid for more symbiotes, holding Daniel and Teal'c hostage. However, others of the Hak'tyl freed SG-1 and went after her raiding party, convincing Ishta and Neith tretonin was a better way. The SGC and the Hak'tyl formed an alliance from that point on. Teal'c and Ishta in particular grew close on both a personal and professional level.

Evacuation of Hak'tyl

Moloc was enraged at this rebellion within his domain and sought out the Hak'tyl, destroying their sanctuary (8.09 "Sacrifices"). The colony got word in time to take refuge and escaped to the SGC complete with their livestock and belongings. By this point, the Hak'tyl were fully involved in the rebel Jaffa movement, having contact with Bra'tac and other rebels. One of the Hak'tyl, Kar'yn, became betrothed to Teal'c's son, Rya'c. Moloc's attack prevented the nuptials, but they hoped to have the ceremony at the SGC. Teal'c was enraged at Rya'c's decision to marry when life for the rebel Jaffa movement was so uncertain and difficult. He and Ishta clashed over their different ideas for marriage and how to respond to Moloc's attack on Haktyl.

Ishta, along with a rebel Jaffa named Aron went to assassinate Moloc. Teal'c went after her, finding her plan reckless and distrusting Aron as a possible spy for Moloc. When the other Jaffa learned what they did, they wanted to be part of any immediate rescue effort. Ka'lel and Kar'yn were particularly vocal. But with the well-guarded gate, the SGC's assistance was limited. Teal'c's concerns for Aron were for naught, as Aron saved Teal'c from capture. They both rescued Ishta from where she had been captured by Moloc. Aron signals some missiles launched from the SGC and they take out the Goa'uld and his Jaffa. Back at the SGC, they have found a new home for the Hak'tyl, but no one departs until after Kar'yn and Rya'c get married.

Free Jaffa Nation

Free Jaffa Council

With the defeat of the Goa'uld, the Hak'tyl have a prominent role in the nascent Free Jaffa Nation. Their numbers and power have guaranteed them a seat at the high council table, and Ka'lel is chosen to represent them (9.07 "Ex Deus Machina"). When Teal'c was shut out of discussion by Free Jaffa Nation leader Gerak, Ka'lel approached him in secret and told them Gerak had information the Goa'uld Ba'al was on Earth and was planning a raid to capture him, without Tau'ri knowledge.

Bra'tac and Teal'c depended on Ka'lel as a staunch political ally in governing on the council. She too protested Gerak's efforts to strongarm the Free Jaffa Nation to following Ori until Gerak arrived suddenly at the meeting having become a Prior (9.10 "The Fourth Horseman Part 1").

After Gerak's reconversion, politics became the norm once again, and in fact the largest issue was whether or not to create a type of "democratic vote" for the Free Jaffa Nation. The Hak'tyl, and Ka'lel were concerned with the rights of female Jaffa in general, because many regions did not allow the women of their communities to vote (9.14 "Stronghold"). She worked with Bra'tac and Teal'c often before the council. However sometime before their morning negotiations, Ka'lel was brainwashed by Ba'al. When she spoke during the session, she reversed her long-held position. When another council member, Maz'rai, approached her, Ka'lel zatted him to bring him to Ba'al for brainwashing.

Ba'al's attempted coup was thwarted, and though Ka'lel was not mentioned by name, Bra'tac was confident she and the other Jaffa that had been brainwashed by him would be able to prevail.

• Ginra Hak'tyl who was in council with Neith and Ka'lel when Neith was considering her jomo secu challenge.
• Ishta leader of the Hak'tyl, Ishta also has an on again/off again romantic relationship with Teal'c.
• Ka'lel one of Ishta's best advisors, it was she who helped cement the alliance with the SGC and later became Hak'tyl representative to the Free Jaffa Nation.
• Kar'yn young warrior of the Hak'tyl who fell in love with Rya'c. They got married at Stargate Command.
• Mala one of Ishta's seconds, Mala volunteered to be one of the first to try the experimental tretonin, but unfortunately her body rejected the treatment and she died.
• Neith one of Ishta's seconds and sister of Nesa, Neith was so skeptical of allying with the Tau'ri that Ishta did not at first inform her of the plan. Neith even challenged Ishta in the rite of jomo'secu before news of Mala's death made she and Ishta allies. Neith eventually agreed to take tretonin.
• Nesa sister of Neith, Nesa was just reaching puberty and needing a primta when SG-1 first met her. She became friends with Daniel Jackson and agreed to take tretonin over her sister's objections.
• Nictal horsewoman Haktyl who relayed messages amongst the group.

Alliances

• Tau'ri — Members of the Hak'tyl sought out the Sholva Teal'c and SG-1 to form an alliance with the Tau'ri, which they eventually achieved.

• Rebel Jaffa — technically, the Hak'tyl are their own independant offshoot of the whole Rebel Jaffa movement.

Enemies

• Goa'uld — first Moloc was the only subject of the Hak'tyl's ire, but they, like the rest of the rebel Jaffa, fought against their enslavement of Jaffa.
