Dr. Kavanagh

Summary

Dr. Kavanagh is an American civilian scientist assigned to the Atlantis Expedition in the Pegasus Galaxy.

Character Biography

Kavanagh is a leader among his technical team, but lacks certain social graces which make him disliked by many. He is brilliant, nonetheless, and even though he isn't well-liked, he considers some of the people who worked with him in the first year in Atlantis as some of his friends. Kavanagh, however, doesn't hesitate from speaking his mind, especially concerning his assessment of Dr. Elizabeth Weir's performance as the leader of the Expedition. He feels she lacks the essential leadership skills in making the tough decisions and has reported in detail each incident which he felt she failed. When it was revealed that there was a Goa'uld spy in Atlantis, Weir concluded without a doubt that it was Kavanagh and even ordered that he be tortured to extract information concerning the sabotage of the computer systems which would cause the destruction of the Ancient city. The spy was revealed to be Col. Caldwell, the commander of the Daedalus, who had been taken as a host to a Goa'uld on Earth without his knowledge. Kavanagh was not tortured for information after all and it was not revealed whether or not Weir apologized to him for falsely accusing him, but she did feel guilt for what she later perceived as crossing the line at ordering his torture.
