  • "A final of Alan McCullough’s Daedalus Variations came out today and we shifted focus to Alan’s second - extreme Shep-whumpage - script, co-storied by Robert C. Cooper." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 11, 2008.
  • "Despite the delay, I got in about five minutes before the prosthetics meeting. We discussed upcoming episodes Whispers, The Daedalus Variations, The Seed, and Broken Ties. Among the subjects covered: visual versus practical effects, stunt people vs. acrobats, fog, elements of the visual we saw in Spoils of War, yogurt, and, of course, methacil." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 12, 2008.
  • "Ascended Tauri writes: “Based on your posted picture, is ‘The Daedalus Variations’ slated to air as No.4 in Season 5?” Answer: At present, yes it is." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 16, 2008.

5.07 "Whispers"
Written by: Joseph Mallozzi

  • "Anne Teldy writes: “Will my namesake be eaten by space cows in “Broken Ties” or are you going to torture me by making me wait for it?” Answer: Nope, not Broken Ties. Whispers maybe." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, January 31, 2008.
  • "The character in Search and Rescue has been changed to Captain Alicia Vega. Now DOCTOR Allison Porter will be making her debut in Whispers." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 8, 2008.
  • "Well, I completed all of two pages on Whispers today, finally hitting that all-important 10 page mark but, more importantly, establishing the other team: Captain Alicia Vega, Lieutenant Anne Teldy, Sergeant Dusty Wells, and Dr. Alison (with one L) Porter. Carson will be in for a treat - when he’s not fighting for his life. Come tomorrow, I’ll probably rewrite the whole thing anyway but, hey, it’s a start. A slow, laborious start." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 11, 2008.
  • "Speaking of which - the prosthetics meeting with Todd Master has been moved to tomorrow morning. For Whispers, I’d like something elegantly simple yet shockingly terrifying. I can’t wait to see what Todd and the gang come up with." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 11, 2008.
  • "I told her [Jewel Staite] she’d have to get in for 4:00 a.m. every morning so that prosthetics could get an early jump on the body cast process which would take about 3-4 hours. “The trick is not to breathe too much or let the latex touch your skin,” I advised, “as it’s not only toxic but highly corrosive. Anyway, relax and have fun with it.” She wasn’t sure whether I was kidding or not." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 11, 2008.
  • "More slow and laborious progress on the Whispers script today, but I’m pleased to report that I am finally out of the Beckett -Porter scene. I was actually on a bit of a roll this morning (if half a page can be considered a roll - which, in my case, it can) only to be distracted by: ... the unwelcome suggestion that we shoot parts of Whispers at Fantasy Gardens..." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 14, 2008. (Fantasy Gardens was the filming location for SG-1's "Revisions" and SGA's "Irresponsible".)
  • "Well, this week is the calm before the storm, and a golden opportunity to make some major headway on Whispers before prep begins on Broken Ties. I’m pleased to report that I’m out of Act I and making progress on Act II. Right now, I’m feeling pretty good about what I’ve got but, traditionally, the second-guessing doesn’t really begin until, oh, Act III. There’ll be a lot going on in this one production-wise and I’d like to put it out early so that we can commence the planning/hair-rending/tearful recriminating as soon as possible." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 20, 2008.
  • "On the script end, the past couple of days on Whispers have proven a breeze as I approach the end of Act III. I’m finally into the fun and fog and it’s utterly creeptastic. I’m hoping to complete a first draft before Thursday - when prep begins on Broken Tie." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 22, 2008.
  • "Read, re-read, and re-re-read the 56 pages I’ve got on Whispers so far, hoping it would put me in the proper frame of mind that would allow me to write the final scene. It didn’t." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 27, 2008.
  • "Said hello Paul McGillion back who dropped by the production offices on his way to his wardrobe fitting for The Seed. I pitched him Whispers. He was predictably delighted at the prospect of being stranded off-world with an all-female team." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 27, 2008.
  • "Well, Whispers is almost done. Almost - except for that last scene. I’ll see how I do tomorrow and if I still come up empty, I’ll just hold a contest for the best tag." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 28, 2008.
  • "Rejoice! For I have completed my first draft of Whispers! Finally, after three torturous weeks (one and a half of which was spent spinning my wheels on that last scene), I’m done. For now. Once the guys have had a chance to read the draft, I’m sure that’ll change. The early reviews (actually review) have been very positive. 'I think it‘s great!' raves Alex Levine." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 29, 2008.

  • "Carl is going to jump on #8 (interesting developments in this one that had Priscilla and the gang at MGM very excited)" — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, January 20, 2008.
  • "Gave Carl notes on his revised beat sheet for Tracker. My one big cover note: Change the guy’s name. Clearly frustrated, Carl informed me he was open to suggestions. I consulted the list of ingredients listed on the packaged mixed nuts sitting on the coffee table, immediately coming up with the inspired 'Peanutia'." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 27, 2008.
5.09 Untitled Teyla Story

  • "Alan is mulling over a possible story to slip into the #9 slot as the script originally envisioned for that spot ran into a “creative snafu” that a) moved it into the back half and b) may necessitate a change in perspective." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 20, 2008.
  • "Yes, the extreme Shep-whump episode has been moved to the back half, leaving a big yawning empty space in the #9 slot. But we sat down for a couple of hours this afternoon and spun out a fantastic Teyla story. It’s one of those stories that, after you’ve finishing throwing out ideas and putting together a rough structure, you sit back and say: “Damn, I wish I was writing this one.” And with that, we have our first half mapped out. Much like last year, it’s a nice mix of individual and team episodes." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 22, 2008.
  • "Gave Alan notes on his beat sheet. Told him I thought it was going to be a fantastic episode. No pressure." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 27, 2008.

  • "It really hit home this afternoon when I glanced up at the whiteboard and saw the big, empty space beneath the Season 5 heading and beside the numbers 1 through 20. Marty G. helpfully filled in areas with the following titles: Premiere, Mid-Season Two Parter, and Finale. Awesome! 4 down and 16 to go!" — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, October 24, 2007.
  • "The writers have convened in the writer's room to discuss the mid-season two parter." — Alex Levine in his scifi.com blog, January 25, 2008.
  • "Marielabbott writes: “Any chance Weir might be figuring prominently in the mid-season two-parter?” Answer: Nope." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, January 31, 2008.
  • "So far, we’ve got a terrific, BIG two-parter planned. I suspect that the page count in the Daniel/McKay scenes (featuring the two fastest-talking actors in show business) will have the scheduling gurus doing back-flips. Remember that new enemy I mentioned? Oh, and Marty G. will be doing the honors on this one." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 5, 2008.
  • "Marty G. will do the honors for the mid-season two-parter (Welcome back to Atlantis, Dr. Jackson). — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 20, 2008.

5.xx Possible Revisit to SG-1's Shelved "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow"
Story by: Joseph Mallozzi
Written by:
Directed by:
Storyline:
Production:
  • "... 1) an impromptu gathering of the writers to spin four possible new story ideas including a sequel to that season 4 episode and the possibility of revisiting the SG-1-themed and shelved Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow..." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 14, 2008.
  • "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" is a time travel x2 story originally pitched by Mallozzi for SG-1's Season Ten, but was replaced by Alan McCullough's "The Road Not Taken". Alex Levine wrote of the shelving of Mallozzi's idea in his scifi.com blog: "When writers are coming up with new ideas, it’s often the case that one story, or part of a story, is too similar to a story idea that has already been written or agreed upon (or purchased, as is the case with freelance writers). When this happens, we say the idea “steps on” the other. And that happens quite a lot. So often really good ideas get squashed because they would be repetitive. And it happened on SG-1 just recently with two stories that at first glance don’t appear to be too similar but once you take a good look at them they are. Joe Mallozzi had come up with a time travel story, and Alan McCullough was working on an alternate reality story. Now it doesn’t take a genius to realize that if you go back in time, and change the future, that you’d be dealing with a present tense alternate reality. So they stepped on each other. And only one went ahead. But you’ll have to wait until later in the season until I tell you which one went ahead… but I’m taking the political middle ground – in my opinion, both episodes would be a lot of fun." — Alex Levine, Script Coordinator, SciFi.com Blog, July 25, 2006.

  • This episode will be the show's 100th. When asked if it will be like the 100th episode of Stargate SG-1 "Wormhole X-Treme", which was not too serious, Joseph Mallozzi replied, "Since it will be the season-ender, it will not be comical." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, October 27, 2007.

Production Notes

Season Five Production and Direction

  • News on the Season Five pick-up was given by Variety on October 24, 2007. Executive producer and co-showrunner Joseph Mallozzi said in his personal blog that the writers will start breaking new stories on Monday, October 29, 2007.
  • "John Smith came in to talk about the directors’ schedule. Well, I just want to say that we are thrilled at the prospect of working with Ken Girotti again and, oh yeah, that young up-and-comer." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, November 5, 2007.
  • On December 31, 2007, Joseph Mallozzi published a "spoiler poem" for fans to decode for each episode in the second half of Season Four and the first part of Season Five. According to Mallozzi on January 20, 2008, fifteen episodes of Season Five are alluded to in the poem!
  • "Down in the art department, James Robbins, our Production Designer, and Chris Beach, one of our Art Directors, are hard at work on the first few episodes. We've seen a number of excellent drawings and Chris is busy designing sets on the computer. It's going to be a busy construction season, so you can look forward to some interesting new sets and "looks". There have been lots of discussions about Ronon's hair, Teyla's child, and the Traveler's set. And the first day of principal photography is rapidly approaching." — Alex Levine in his scifi.com blog, January 25, 2008.

Characters/Actors

  • Dr. Carson Beckett
    • Dr. Carson Beckett (played by Paul McGillion) will return in the back half of Season Four for a two-parter. At the end of Season Four, "...that door will be left open" for Carson to be alive and possibly have more appearances in Season Five. — Joseph Mallozzi in an interview at the Save Carson Beckett Campaign Site, April 9, 2007, and in his personal blog, April 12, 2007.
    • Paul McGillion will guest in five episodes. — from NBC Universal press release, February 5, 2008.
    • "I can’t tell you anything about season five because I really don’t know that much about what they have planned. I just got the first draft of the first script and they might kill me again if I tell you [laughs] I will be back for at least five episodes and I believe it will be peppered throughout the year, they will not be consecutive." — Paul McGillion, TrekMovie.com interview, February 22, 2008.
  • Dr. Daniel Jackson
    • "Alas, in response to many who have been asking, Daniel Jackson will not be making an appearance in season four [...] But, if we get a fifth season pick-up, it’s definitely something we definitely aim to pursue." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, August 8, 2007.
    • "Michael Shanks will be in two episodes. So far." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 5, 2008.
  • Col. Samantha Carter
    • Concerning Amanda Tapping and Jewel Staite: "If and when we do get the pick up, given everything we’ve seen so far, we would very much like to have both of them back." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, August 9, 2007.
    • "So far I'm doing one [episode] off the top, which explains Carter leaving the show. And I don't think I'm telling tales out of school or jumping on anyone else's press release, but since it's been announced that Sanctuary's being picked up I'm obviously not going to be a regular character on Atlantis. I think everyone has pretty much figured that one out." — Amanda Tapping, Gateworld interview, February 2, 2008.
    • "Said goodbye to Amanda and told her it was a pleasure working with her these past eight years. 'Don’t’ be a stranger,' I told her in a particularly emotional moment. 'Come back and say hi.' Then was quick add: 'But call first so we can clear your name with the guard at the front gate.'" — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 27, 2008.
  • Dr. Jennifer Keller
    • Concerning Amanda Tapping and Jewel Staite: "If and when we do get the pick up, given everything we’ve seen so far, we would very much like to have both of them back." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, August 9, 2007.
    • Jewel Staite has been added to the regular cast for Season Five. — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 5, 2008.
    • "Jewel ... swung by the production offices today. Jewel was in for a fitting ... We talked horror movies, Watchmen, and, of course, what we have in store for Keller in season 5. Like Rachel, she was excited about some of the planned developments..." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 11, 2008.
  • Dr. Elizabeth Weir
    • "Weir’s storyline will be revisited in season 5." — Martin Gero in Joseph Mallozzi's personal blog, January 6, 2008.
    • "I thought it best to inform Weir fans of recent developments. Last year, after we shot that final surprise scene in BAMSR, I stopped by Torri’s trailer to congratulate her on a job well done and, also, to assure her that the door was left wide open for Weir‘s possible return (in some form, be it repli-Weir or other) the following season. Torri was excited by the prospect and, in particular, had great things to say about her new leather outfit (props to Val). As season four wrapped, Carl and Paul got to spinning and came up with a terrific storyline that picked up where that last scene of BAMSR left off. We had a story in place for one episode, the starting point of a potentially bigger arc. The script was written and we eventually contacted Torri who, after much consideration, turned down the offer to reprise the role of Elizabeth Weir for the episode. We are, of course, disappointed, but nevertheless respect Torri’s decision and wish her all the best in her future endeavors." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 8, 2008.
  • Mitchell and Vala
    • "We have no plans to bring Mitchell over in season 5. [...] To be honest, we haven’t given thought to a Vala story. In terms of a crossover character, Daniel is our one and only priority. Also, we haven’t spoken to Claudia since Continuum." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, January 21, 2008.
  • Richard Woolsey
    • Robert Picardo as Richard Woolsey will become part of the regular cast as Woolsey takes over leadership of the Expedition in Carter's place. — NBC Universal press release, February 5, 2008.
    • Richard Woolsey will be appearing in 14 of the 20 episodes of Season Five. — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 15, 2008.
  • Sheppard's Team
    • Returning regular cast members: Joe Flanigan, David Hewlett, Rachel Luttrell, and Jason Momoa. — NBC Universal press release, February 5, 2008.
    • "Rachel dropped by the production offices and we had a little chat about what’s in store for Teyla this year. She was not only happy but, admittedly, quite relieved with the creative route we’re taking." — Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, February 7, 2008.
