==Stargate Universe==

''Stargate Universe'' is a third ''Stargate'' television series and is created by Robert C. Cooper and Brad Wright for the Sci Fi Channel (US) and is due to make its premiere in the FALL 2009 (POSSIBLE PREMIERE DATE AND TIME: October 2, 2009, at 9 PM on the Sci Fi Channel):
''Stargate Universe'' is a television series created by Robert C. Cooper and Brad Wright and ran for only two seasons on Syfy: Scientists, soldiers, and civilians must use the Stargate to evacuate the Icarus Base when it comes under attack, but they end up dialing a ninth chevron address that gets them to a long-abandoned exploration ship called ''Destiny'' that the Ancients built millions of years ago. The only mission now is survival.
<blockquote>
After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate's ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the ''Destiny'', launched by The Ancients at the height of their civilization as a grand experiment set in motion, but never completed.
<br><br>
What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never ending mission, as the Stargate Universe crew discovers the ship is unable to return to Earth, and they must now fend for themselves aboard the ''Destiny''.
<br><br>
The crew will travel to the far reaches of the universe, connecting with each of the previously launched Stargates, thus fulfilling the ''Destiny'''s original mission. Challenges will arise though as the ship comes into range of Stargates placed centuries ahead of the ''Destiny'' and the crew is unable to control the ship's navigational schedule. If someone is left behind, there is no way to go back for them, adding to the drama of encountering new races, enemies and adventures.

===Season One===

* "The five of us - Brad, Robert, Carl, Paul, and myself - spent the morning going over the show’s arcs and relationships, character motivations and developments, and the evolution of an organized social structure aboard the ship. We discussed the need to resist the temptation to wrap up every storyline with a neat little bow and, instead, look to lay the foundation for coming events. We also focused on backstory and the sometimes surprising history of some of our characters." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi, January 23, 2009.
* "An official announcement on the female cast will be made whenever we’ve finished casting the roles. It’s hard to say how many female characters will make up part of the crew. We don’t have an exact number of the complete Destiny crew and prefer it to be vague at this point. No idea on the release of official team or set photos. We have a pretty good idea of where we’ll be going with the main characters and a few of our secondaries, but a lot will depend on how things come together onscreen. No plans for a flash-forward type of episode. No official gate info at this point. With regard to ship travel, we’ve discussed the possibility that each season would take place over the course of a voyage through a different galaxy. No new episode names for now. No idea when SciFi plans to air the premiere. As much as we love Kari [Wuhrer, who played Nancy Sheppard], there are presently no plans to include her (or any Atlantis characters) in SGU. At this point, it’s too early to be announcing guest stars." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi, January 30, 2009.

It’s a great premise that, when I read it, left me wondering “How the hell is this going to work?” and, after much back and forth, we eventually came up with the logic construct to make it work (see [http://josephmallozzi.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/dsc00362.jpg Brad‘s whiteboard diagram] for the explanation)." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (November 18, 2008).

We broke for lunch, then resumed the discussion on shipboard justice and the ever-developing interrelations among the crew. Factions, fractions, and surprising revelations. By the time we called it a day, we had beaten out Alan’s story." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (November 17, 2008).

:* "We ended the day with a general discussion of SGU: some future storylines, a couple of surprises, yes there will be a mid-season two-parter, and the types of individuals who will make up the Destiny’s extended crew." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (November 13, 2008).
:* "Today was our final day of spinning on Stargate: Universe and we finished in impressive fashion, breaking not one but TWO stories. The first, episode #10 is mine (Carl is especially excited about this one) while #11 falls to Paul. Ticking clocks, twists and turns, alliances, betrayals, and a surprise guest! And, just like that, we have our first 10 stories in play." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (November 20, 2008).
:* "Priority #1 now for me is hammering out an outline for the first part of the SGU mid-season two-parter. From what I understand, casting is still ongoing but I expect we’ll be hearing word on some decisions soon…soon…" &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (December 5, 2008).
:* "The outline for the first part of the SGU mid-season two-parter: Well, despite the introduction, I did make headway by completing a first pass. It’s a pretty solid story, full of action, twists and turns. My only uncertainty stems from some of the locations and weapon systems given that the ship is still being designed as we speak. One more pass and I’ll be putting it out." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (December 10, 2008).
:* "Of the first ten episodes broken, we have a grand total of 0 forested planets. I’m not saying we won’t, eventually, come across one but, for the time being, the emphasis is on the ship and some locations atypical of Stargate. :* "Back in the office today, working on my SGU script. A little slow-going but I’m managing to maintain the snail’s pace of one scene a day." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (January 7, 2009)
:* "Back in the office today where I completed a little more of the script, writing and rewriting the same ten pages. But what a ten pages!" &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (January 8, 2009)
:* "In spite of the fact that the production office is my “place of work”, I’ve been accomplishing very little in the way of actual script work there of late. I’ve been spinning my wheels on a complicated sequence that has been made all the more complicated by the fact that I’m dealing with all new characters with all new agendas aboard on all new ship. And while the obstacles presented are by no means insurmountable, they have proven exceptionally challenging given that whenever I get a bit of a run going, I get distracted and have to start over. MGM needs this behind the scenes feature approved. Back to square one. Did you read Alan’s script yet? Back to square one. What’ll you have for lunch? Back to square one. I finally did manage to tackle the sequence last night and, between 8:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m., actually succeeded in slotting all the pieces of the puzzle together. I was relieved - until this afternoon when I learned that some assumptions I had made based on previous conversations no longer applied. Back to square one. I’ve decided to shelf work on the script until we can all agree on a plan of attack." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (January 22, 2009)
:* "I aim to finish the fourth act tomorrow and hopefully make some inroads into the fifth act. Of course, fifth acts tend to practically write themselves so that should be a breeze. First draft by…next week? Possibly?" &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (January 30, 2009)
:* "Last night, I completed the fourth act of my work-in-progress and got well into the fifth act. Only five more beats to go and I’m done. Now if this was an SG-1 or Atlantis script, I’d probably already be finished but SGU is a different animal. In this series, character focus will prove as important as the prevailing storyline which means more of those quieter, reflective moments fans seem to cherish." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (February 1, 2009)
:* "Huzzah! I finally have a preliminary draft of the first part of the Stargate: Universe mid-season two-parter. However, it comes in at a robust 57 pages! I’ll spend the next few days trimming it down to a far more manageable 54, then put it out to the rest of the writing department - after which I will no doubt receive notes requesting that I put all the stuff I took out back in. Anyway, I’m quite happy with what I have. This episode promises excitement, angst, and surprises big AND small. Loving some of the show’s dark horse players: Wray, James, and, if mom will let me keep him, Boone." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (February 3, 2009)
:* "I’m presently tinkering with the my completed first draft of episode #10." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (February 12, 2009)

Fearing we might well spend our final three days trying to spin a story out of this kernel of an idea, I suggested we move on to #10 and #11 which, at the very least, are somewhat more substantial in comparison) and moved on to the two-parter." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (November 19, 2008).

===Main Cast===
* '''Dr. Nicholas Rush [formerly Dr. David Rush]''' - "The script [for the pilot] is fast-paced and fun; its characters unique and engaging. My favorite: Dr. David Rush. Oh, he’s going to be a handful. Originally planned as a two-parter, Brad and Robert quickly discovered that there was simply too much story for such a tight frame, so the series opener is now looking like a three-parter." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi, November 11, 2008. According to the audition sides for Col. Everett Young, Rush wanted to be in charge of the expedition that gets stranded on the ''Destiny'' and he and Young are at odds on how to do things. [http://stargate-sg1-solutions.com/blog/?p=2313 CASTING: Robert Carlyle]
** "Late this afternoon saw the arrival of another member of our cast - Robert Carlyle, a.k.a. Dr. Nicholas Rush. He must have been exhausted after a 15+ hour flight but, like Brian, he was very pleasant and cheerful. We talked food (of course) and then left him to get down to brass tacks with Brad and Rob." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (January 30, 2009)
** "According to Rob Cooper, Mr. Carlyle will be keeping the accent." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (February 1, 2009)

* '''Colonel Everett Young.''' 40’s handsome, capable, former SG team leader.  Like the Jack O’Neill of ten years ago, but Young’s edges have tended to sharpen over time. He requested permission to serve the remainder of his commission on Earth upon marrying his wife, Hailey, two years ago, but for now he’s temporary commander of a secret off world base.  The loss of two members of his team several years ago has taught him never to take anything for granted, and be prepared for anything.  He stays on top of his team so they stay alive. [http://stargate-sg1-solutions.com/blog/?p=2643 CASTING: Justin Louis]

* '''Lt. Matthew Scott [formerly Lt. Jared Nash].''' 20-25. Junior SGC team member. Officer material but green and rough around the edges. Every teenage girl’s fantasy. Like a college quarterback thrown into his first pro game, he is thrust into the role of leader well before he’s  ready for the responsibility and must learn to take command, earn respect through action, and manage the diverse personalities on the  ship to keep everyone alive. Like Jason Bourne, he is skilled and well-trained but mentally unprepared for the urgency of the situation. This character was renamed to "Scott". He is a pilot who is the prime candidate to fly the Ancient Shuttle in their first mission to a planet from the ''Destiny''. [http://stargate-sg1-solutions.com/blog/?p=2656 CASTING: Brian J. Smith]
** "Brian J. Smith, our Lieutenant Scott, was in the production offices today for his costume fitting and meet and greet. An incredibly good-natured, upbeat guy genuinely excited about the show and his character. Brad and Robert got him up to speed on some of the backstory elements we’d been discussing that morning and you could almost see him bubbling over in anticipation. He looks great in uniform and, I dare say, the ladies are going to love him in his black t-shirt." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (January 30, 2009)
** [http://www.gateworld.net/interviews/future_face.shtml Gateworld: Future Face: Gateworld talks with Brian J. Smith, February 3, 2009.]

* '''Eli Wallace [formerly Eli Hitchcock].''' 20-25.  Total slacker. Utter genius. Mathematics, computers, anything he puts his mind to.  Acerbic sense of humor. A social outcast. Comes from a broken home. Lacks confidence because his true intelligence has never really been recognized like Matt Damon’s character from Good Will Hunting with a little Jack Black thrown in. [http://stargate-sg1-solutions.com/blog/?p=2637 CASTING: David Blue]
** "Well, the cast is slowly starting to trickle in. Yesterday, I had the pleasure to meet self-styled t.v. junkie, Guitar Hero aficionado, and fellow gourmand David Blue who is thrilled to be part of the franchise and raring to go." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (February 3, 2009)

* '''Sgt. Ronald Greer [formerly Ron “Psycho” Stasiak].''' 20.  Marine.  Big, strong, silent.  You want  him on your side. You don’t want him mad at you.  Lacks control over his temper in non combat situations.  His emotional expression ranges from sarcasm to anger.  His past is a mystery but it’s clear something dark formed the hard shell around him. Yet, there must also be some moral center because otherwise he’d kill everyone around him.  Think Eric Bana’s character  “Hoot” in Blackhawk Down.  Adam Baldwin at 20 could play him. [http://stargate-sg1-solutions.com/blog/?p=2648 CASTING: Jamil Walker Smith]

*From [http://stargate-sg1-solutions.com/blog/?p=1619 Solutions: Stargate Universe Character Breakdowns Revealed, September 17, 2008.] -
** '''Tamara Johanson [Jon?].''' 20-25. SGC Field medic, Captain grade. Off world experience. Beautiful, tough, smart, capable.  Paramedic level  training. Able to triage serious injury. Modest background. Dreamed of being a doctor but couldn’t afford medical school and the Air Force was her best option. She ends up being the most medically inclined person on the ship but is overwhelmed by the lack of knowledge and experience treating seriously wounded and ill patients. She also lacks the medicine and supplies and has to make do. This character's breakdown has been modified since its original release and Tamara will most likely be lower in rank. It is also possible that her name will be changed.
** '''Chloe Walker [formerly Carpenter].''' 20 ish. Stunning and sexy. Daughter of a U.S. Senator.  Silver spoon upbringing and a little spoiled but not stupid either. Politically and socially savvy. Dreams of following in her father’s footsteps but for now she’s a bit of a party girl in her first year at an Ivy League school. Her father’s tragic death and the  dire circumstances of being trapped on a spaceship seriously tests her character.

** '''Camille Wray.''' Female. 30-50. An accountant with the international oversight body that governs the Stargate program. Now the highest ranking member of that body left stranded on the ship, she has a false sense of importance and superiority to the other military and civilian population along with a stubborn way of asserting it.sptv050769..GUEST STAR, POSSIBLY RECURRING, PLEASE SUBMIT ALL ETHNICITIES. "Meanwhile, we inch ever closer to casting one of my other favorites roles - the character of Wray." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (January 30, 2009).

* "We ended the day with a general discussion of SGU: some future storylines, a couple of surprises, yes there will be a mid-season two-parter, and the types of individuals who will make up the Destiny’s extended crew." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi, November 13, 2008.
* "...cast the roles of Young, Rush, Scott, Eli, Tamara, Chloe, Stasiak, Wray, and Brody (among others)..." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi, November 20, 2008.

Those of you looking for a more character-centered scifi series need look no further. While '''Rush''' is still my fave, I also think '''Wray''' has a lot of potential for getting under '''Young''' and co.’s skin. She’s a definite love her or hate her type of character, one who’ll prove the bane to many a series regular, and probably some viewers as well. At present, a lot of the supporting players ('''James, Brody, Henry, Riley, Grearson, Volker''', and dear, dear '''Franklin''') hold a lot of promise as well. I’m reminded of Atlantis’s Zelenka and SG-1’s Lorne (hell, even McKay), secondary characters who, over time, developed into fully fleshed-out personalities and fan favorites." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi.

** '''Curtis.''' Leads a group of stranded personnel as they survey parts of the ''Destiny''.
** '''Airman Darren Becker.''' Works in the Mess.
** '''Palmer.''' Has knowledge of geology/chemistry and is on an away mission searching for calcium oxide (lime), a naturally-occurring chemical compound that can be used in a variety of ways to improve living conditions. It is possible that this is a key ingredient in a compound that is part of the air scrubbing system that is malfunctioning on the ''Destiny''.
** '''White.''' Has knowledge of geology/chemistry who is with Palmer searching for lime.
** '''Poole.''' Part of the group searching for lime. Is knowledgeable about the requirements needed to dial the Stargate with the ninth chevron.
** '''Michael Smith.''' Military (commands troops) Part of the group searching for lime. Is knowledgeable about the requirements needed to dial the Stargate with the ninth chevron. He's working on solving the air scrubbing system malfunction and leaks on the ''Destiny''. He possibly uses the Ancient long-range communications device to bid Emily (wife? girlfriend?) good-bye after being stranded on the ''Destiny'', but promises her that he'll do everything he can to get home.
** '''Emily.''' Michael Smith's significant other who says good-bye to him after he's stranded. She doesn't appear to hold out much hope for his return and will probably not wait for him. She seems somewhat resentful of his classified assignment that necessitated that he exclude her from that part of his life.
** '''Franklin.''' Described as "a middle aged Eeyore-type civilian" (Eeyore is the donkey from ''Winnie the Pooh'' that constantly loses his tail and says "thanks for noticing" whenever someone shows any kind of concern or attention). Is with Camille Wray, Sgt. Ronald Greer, and Riley as they inventory the supplies that they managed to bring with them through the Stargate and discover neatly-packaged seeds.  Franklin witnesses an intense argument between Wray and Greer concerning the decision to evacuate to the ''Destiny'' instead of to Earth. Neither one knows how or why the decision was made. He's with Grearson and Eli on a planet and is knowledgeable about Stargate addresses. He has four addresses he wishes to dial, and although Eli objects because of something Rush said, doesn't want to hear it because he doesn't trust Rush's judgment. (described by Mallozzi as "dear, dear Franklin" and as holding "a lot of promise" in becoming a fan favorite)
** '''Sgt. Riley.''' With Franklin, Wray, and Greer while they inventory supplies brought through the Stargate. Riley pulls Wray away from her face-to-face challenge of Greer concerning the decision to evacuate to the ''Destiny'' rather than to Earth. (described by Mallozzi as holding "a lot of promise" in becoming a fan favorite)
** '''Kim.''' Is knowledgeable about the requirements needed to dial the Stargate with the ninth chevron.
** '''Grearson.''' A scientist. Is with Eli and Franklin on a planet that is barren. He sides with Franklin concerning dialing the Stargate to one of four addresses that they couldn't dial from the ''Destiny''. Eli objects because of something Rush had said, but Grearson doesn't trust Rush's judgment and thus dismisses what Eli has to say. He's among other scientists (about six in all) who discover a "black oatmeal" on the ''Destiny'' and must figure out its function in the air scrubbing system created by the Ancients who built the ship. (described by Mallozzi as holding "a lot of promise" in becoming a fan favorite)
** '''Volker.''' Is among several others as they inventory the supplies that they managed to bring with them through the Stargate. Is dismayed that they found everything labeled with bar codes but they have no bar code reader. (described by Mallozzi as holding "a lot of promise" in becoming a fan favorite)
** '''Marion and Jack.''' Marion is a waitress and Jack is her son. As she hurries to get dressed for work, she tries to get Jack out of bed so that he won't be late for an important interview. He apparently decided to "cancel" the interview because he doesn't fall into the proper "skill set". He's a gamer and stays up to all hours of the night playing on his computer and is thus hard to get out of bed in the morning. Marion has to hurry to work and sadly leaves her son in his bed. (The significance of Jack to the stranded crew is not apparent in this audition side, but it does appear that he and Eli share a common interest and might know each other or have the same understanding of the game created by Rush's team that simulates the control consoles on the ''Destiny''.)
** '''Brody.''' A scientist who finds some testing equipment on the ''Destiny'' that is used to study the "black oatmeal" compound that is part of the ship's air scrubbing system that is malfunctioning. He's also working on how to seal off leaks. (described by Mallozzi as holding "a lot of promise" in becoming a fan favorite)
** '''Phillips.''' A scientist who is among a group of six who must figure out how to fix the air scrubbing system on the ''Destiny'' by studying a residue that looks like "black oatmeal".
** '''Hearst.''' A scientist who is also among the group who must determine the composition of the "black oatmeal" that is vital to the air scrubbing system of the ''Destiny''.
** '''Henry.''' He has technical knowledge and is able to read console indicators concerning the ''Destiny''&#039;s air quality. He's working with Brody on the ship's air supply problem. (described by Mallozzi as holding "a lot of promise" in becoming a fan favorite)
** '''McDonald.''' He asks for a status report from Henry and Brody concerning the air supply problem on the ship.

** '''Park.''' Works with Homeworld Security.
** '''Major Peterson.''' Most likely is assigned to Homeworld Security. Escorts Young while he is in Col. Collins' body on Earth.

** '''James.''' "Yep, been watching a heck of a lot of auditions of late, especially for one of my favorite secondary characters - James. She’s a spitfire and is going to be a blast to write for. We’ve got three wonderful actresses in contention for the role. No matter which way we go, we won’t be disappointed." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi (January 30, 2009). James is one of the secondary characters that Mallozzi referred to as holding "a lot of promise."

** '''Boone.''' "Huzzah! I finally have a preliminary draft of the first part of the Stargate: Universe mid-season two-parter. ... Anyway, I’m quite happy with what I have. This episode promises excitement, angst, and surprises big AND small. Loving some of the show’s dark horse players: Wray, James, and, if mom will let me keep him, Boone." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi.

* [http://stargate.mgm.com/news_detail.php?id=114 MGM: Across the Universe, November 5, 2008] &mdash; "One of the things I'm really excited about is that we’re looking for people who are a little more identifiable and contemporary. I always thought one of the things that was attractive about the original series was the 'everyman on the street' point of view that O’Neill had to science fiction. It made the characters identifiable. They were more like we would be in a science fiction situation, and how we would react. And that’s what we’re trying to do with the new show – create characters that are going to be challenged by the situation. The team that ends up on the ship is not really who was supposed to go, and in some cases they’re very unprepared and unqualified to be in that situation. So they don’t have all the answers as quickly, and the challenges are greater than they would be for people who have seen it all and don’t have as far to go as characters when they encounter an incredible situation. ... It’s an all new cast. There will certainly be plenty of opportunity for cross over, and there certainly might be some familiar faces in the premiere and in subsequent episodes. But the core of the show is all new. ... We’re certainly looking at some [well-known] names, for one of the lead roles in particular. But for the most part many of the cast will be either new faces, or people you’ve seen in other stuff but maybe aren’t as aware of." &mdash; Robert C. Cooper, co-creator, executive producer, writer.

This was the case with SG-1, with Atlantis, and will no doubt be the case with Universe. One of the things that intrigues me about the Universe concept is the notion that this group is cut off from Earth and everything they've ever known. It was part of what made Atlantis so appealing in the early seasons, something we were never able to return to on account of those damn hyperspace-capable ships. Also, one of the things that bumped me about the SGU premise was its seeming inability to accommodate established guest stars. That was until Brad and Robert pitched out a clever little element that actually makes it very possible to see the likes of Daniel Jackson or Rodney McKay on SGU." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi, ''Stargate Atlantis'' executive producer.

* Ibid. &mdash; "Speaking of SGU, I notice that much of the reaction to the character breakdowns has been negative. While I respect everyone’s right to express their opinions, I’d suggest holding off on making a final decision on the show until you’ve actually seen it. Last week, Brad pitched us the series and its first five episodes and, I have to say, it’s a far cry from the shallow confection many fans are imagining. In fact, in many ways, it’s a much more cerebral and mature addition to the franchise. While firmly entrenched in pre-established Stargate mythology, Stargate Universe definitely strikes out in an exciting new direction. It’s a series that will delight veteran fans, but also appeal to newcomers who may not necessarily know the difference between an Alteran and an Asuran. In spite of what the indicators may suggest, this will definitely not be a Voyager 90210. The assortment of characters that make up the character breakdown are certainly an atypical collection of heroes, far-removed from the skilled likes of Jack O’Neill, Samantha Carter, John Sheppard, and Rodney McKay - but there’s a damn good reason for that. Can’t say more but suffice it to say I have a feeling this show will pleasantly surprise a lot of people." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi, ''Stargate Atlantis'' executive producer.

It’s easy to imagine the worst case scenario. As for the relative value of my opinion - well, that’s also something for you to decide on. However given the fact that I’ve been privy to details beyond the official casting breakdown and public statements made, I am speaking from a informed position. I’ve always followed the maxim 'If you can’t say something nice about someone, don’t say anything at all.' so you can be damn sure that if I didn’t think SGU had potential, you wouldn’t be reading my opinions on the subject." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi, ''Stargate Atlantis'' executive producer.

Now given that some of you have started comparing SGU to existing shows on the basis of what little information has been released thus far, I thought it might be a good idea to help paint a clearer picture of the show. The advantage being that you don’t “travel” through hyperspace for hours on end. You get de-molecularized, or whatever you want to call it, and then spit out at the other end a few seconds later. It’s basically instantaneous, which is why I needed it as a device in this episode [SGA 5.20 "Enemy at the Gate"]. Some people have complained that it was a bit of a deus ex-machina, to which I don’t really have much of a defense. At one point, Brad was thinking about using this as a set-up for a similar drive in Stargate Universe, but he’s since changed his mind. But since it IS set up now, Joe and I do intend to use it as part of the story for the Atlantis movie." &mdash; Paul Mullie.
