Characters of Stargate Universe

Main Cast

  • Dr. Nicholas Rush [formerly Dr. David Rush] - "The script [for the pilot] is fast-paced and fun; its characters unique and engaging. My favorite: Dr. David Rush. Oh, he’s going to be a handful. Originally planned as a two-parter, Brad and Robert quickly discovered that there was simply too much story for such a tight frame, so the series opener is now looking like a three-parter." — Joseph Mallozzi, November 11, 2008. According to the audition sides for Col. Everett Young, Rush wanted to be in charge of the expedition that gets stranded on the Destiny and he and Young are at odds on how to do things. CASTING: Robert Carlyle
  • Colonel Everett Young. 40’s handsome, capable, former SG team leader. Like the Jack O’Neill of ten years ago, but Young’s edges have tended to sharpen over time. He requested permission to serve the remainder of his commission on Earth upon marrying his wife, Hailey, two years ago, but for now he’s temporary commander of a secret off world base. The loss of two members of his team several years ago has taught him never to take anything for granted, and be prepared for anything. He stays on top of his team so they stay alive. CASTING: Justin Louis
  • Lt. Matthew Scott [formerly Lt. Jared Nash]. 20-25. Junior SGC team member. Officer material but green and rough around the edges. Every teenage girl’s fantasy. Like a college quarterback thrown into his first pro game, he is thrust into the role of leader well before he’s ready for the responsibility and must learn to take command, earn respect through action, and manage the diverse personalities on the ship to keep everyone alive. Like Jason Bourne, he is skilled and well-trained but mentally unprepared for the urgency of the situation. This character was renamed to "Scott". He is a pilot who is the prime candidate to fly the Ancient Shuttle in their first mission to a planet from the Destiny. CASTING: Brian J. Smith
  • Eli Wallace [formerly Eli Hitchcock]. 20-25. Total slacker. Utter genius. Mathematics, computers, anything he puts his mind to. Acerbic sense of humor. A social outcast. Comes from a broken home. Lacks confidence because his true intelligence has never really been recognized like Matt Damon’s character from Good Will Hunting with a little Jack Black thrown in. CASTING: David Blue
  • Sgt. Ronald Greer [formerly Ron “Psycho” Stasiak]. 20. Marine. Big, strong, silent. You want him on your side. You don’t want him mad at you. Lacks control over his temper in non combat situations. His emotional expression ranges from sarcasm to anger. His past is a mystery but it’s clear something dark formed the hard shell around him. Yet, there must also be some moral center because otherwise he’d kill everyone around him. Think Eric Bana’s character “Hoot” in Blackhawk Down. Adam Baldwin at 20 could play him. CASTING: Jamil Walker Smith
  • MSgt. Tamara Johansen. 20-25. SGC Field medic, Off world experience. Beautiful, tough, smart, capable. Paramedic level training. Able to triage serious injury. Modest background. Dreamed of being a doctor but couldn’t afford medical school and the Air Force was her best option. She ends up being the most medically inclined person on the ship but is overwhelmed by the lack of knowledge and experience treating seriously wounded and ill patients. She also lacks the medicine and supplies and has to make do. CASTING: Alaina Huffman
  • Chloe Armstrong [formerly Carpenter, Walker]. 20 ish. Stunning and sexy. Daughter of a U.S. Senator. Silver spoon upbringing and a little spoiled but not stupid either. Politically and socially savvy. Dreams of following in her father’s footsteps but for now she’s a bit of a party girl in her first year at an Ivy League school. Her father’s tragic death and the dire circumstances of being trapped on a spaceship seriously tests her character. CASTING: Elyse Levesque

Recurring/Major Guest Characters

  • Camille Wray. Female. 30-50. An accountant with the international oversight body that governs the Stargate program. Now the highest ranking member of that body left stranded on the ship, she has a false sense of importance and superiority to the other military and civilian population along with a stubborn way of asserting it.sptv050769..GUEST STAR, POSSIBLY RECURRING, PLEASE SUBMIT ALL ETHNICITIES. "Meanwhile, we inch ever closer to casting one of my other favorites roles - the character of Wray." — Joseph Mallozzi (January 30, 2009). CASTING: Ming-Na
  • Colonel Telford [formerly Collins]. Male. 35 - 40. Handsome. A born military man proud of himself with great faith in the chain of command. The intended leader of the expedition who plans to reclaim his place as commander regardless of what he must to do. Stubbornly confident and highly regarded by his superiors.sptv050769.. Supporting Lead. RECURRING. PLEASE SUBMIT HISPANIC ACTORS ONLY. CASTING: Lou Diamond Phillips
  • Senator Armstrong [formerly Carpenter, Walker]. Male. 50s. 60s. Distinguished Senator who is the political oversight to this Stargate project trying to dial the 9th Chevron. Also the proud loving father of Chloe Walker his daughter and political aids… GUEST STAR, 2 EPISODE ARC. PLEASE SUBMIT ALL ETHNICITIES. STAR NAMES ONLY. CASTING: Christopher McDonald

Additional Recurring Characters

  • "We ended the day with a general discussion of SGU: some future storylines, a couple of surprises, yes there will be a mid-season two-parter, and the types of individuals who will make up the Destiny’s extended crew." — Joseph Mallozzi, November 13, 2008.
  • "...cast the roles of Young, Rush, Scott, Eli, Tamara, Chloe, Stasiak, Wray, and Brody (among others)..." — Joseph Mallozzi, November 20, 2008.
  • Joseph Mallozzi's Weblog, December 14, 2008 — "Oh, and of course I did find time to read the scripts that Lawren sent my way: the first two episodes of the upcoming Stargate: Universe. Those of you looking for a more character-centered scifi series need look no further. While Rush is still my fave, I also think Wray has a lot of potential for getting under Young and co.’s skin. She’s a definite love her or hate her type of character, one who’ll prove the bane to many a series regular, and probably some viewers as well. At present, a lot of the supporting players (James, Brody, Henry, Riley, Grearson, Volker, and dear, dear Franklin) hold a lot of promise as well. I’m reminded of Atlantis’s Zelenka and SG-1’s Lorne (hell, even McKay), secondary characters who, over time, developed into fully fleshed-out personalities and fan favorites." — Joseph Mallozzi.
  • From Spoiler TV: Stargate Universe - Episode 1.01 and 1.02 - Casting Sides, January 17, 2009. -
    • Sgt. Curtis. Leads a group of stranded personnel as they survey parts of the Destiny. CASTING: According to IMDb: Bradley Stryker
    • Airman Darren Becker. Works in the Mess. CASTING: According to IMDb: Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman
    • Palmer. Has knowledge of geology/chemistry and is on an away mission searching for calcium oxide (lime), a naturally-occurring chemical compound that can be used in a variety of ways to improve living conditions. It is possible that this is a key ingredient in a compound that is part of the air scrubbing system that is malfunctioning on the Destiny.
    • White. Has knowledge of geology/chemistry who is with Palmer searching for lime.
    • Poole. Part of the group searching for lime. Is knowledgeable about the requirements needed to dial the Stargate with the ninth chevron.
    • Michael Smith. Military (commands troops) Part of the group searching for lime. Is knowledgeable about the requirements needed to dial the Stargate with the ninth chevron. He's working on solving the air scrubbing system malfunction and leaks on the Destiny. He possibly uses the Ancient long-range communications device to bid Emily (wife? girlfriend?) good-bye after being stranded on the Destiny, but promises her that he'll do everything he can to get home.
    • Emily. Michael Smith's significant other who says good-bye to him after he's stranded. She doesn't appear to hold out much hope for his return and will probably not wait for him. She seems somewhat resentful of his classified assignment that necessitated that he exclude her from that part of his life.
    • Franklin. Described as "a middle aged Eeyore-type civilian" (Eeyore is the donkey from Winnie the Pooh that constantly loses his tail and says "thanks for noticing" whenever someone shows any kind of concern or attention). Is with Camille Wray, Sgt. Ronald Greer, and Riley as they inventory the supplies that they managed to bring with them through the Stargate and discover neatly-packaged seeds. Franklin witnesses an intense argument between Wray and Greer concerning the decision to evacuate to the Destiny instead of to Earth. Neither one knows how or why the decision was made. He's with Grearson and Eli on a planet and is knowledgeable about Stargate addresses. He has four addresses he wishes to dial, and although Eli objects because of something Rush said, doesn't want to hear it because he doesn't trust Rush's judgment. (described by Mallozzi as "dear, dear Franklin" and as holding "a lot of promise" in becoming a fan favorite) CASTING: According to IMDb: Mark Burgess
    • Sgt. Riley. With Franklin, Wray, and Greer while they inventory supplies brought through the Stargate. Riley pulls Wray away from her face-to-face challenge of Greer concerning the decision to evacuate to the Destiny rather than to Earth. (described by Mallozzi as holding "a lot of promise" in becoming a fan favorite) CASTING: According to IMDb: Haig Sutherland
    • Kim. Is knowledgeable about the requirements needed to dial the Stargate with the ninth chevron.
    • Grearson. A scientist. Is with Eli and Franklin on a planet that is barren. He sides with Franklin concerning dialing the Stargate to one of four addresses that they couldn't dial from the Destiny. Eli objects because of something Rush had said, but Grearson doesn't trust Rush's judgment and thus dismisses what Eli has to say. He's among other scientists (about six in all) who discover a "black oatmeal" on the Destiny and must figure out its function in the air scrubbing system created by the Ancients who built the ship. (described by Mallozzi as holding "a lot of promise" in becoming a fan favorite)
    • Dale Volker. Is among several others as they inventory the supplies that they managed to bring with them through the Stargate. Is dismayed that they found everything labeled with bar codes but they have no bar code reader. (described by Mallozzi as holding "a lot of promise" in becoming a fan favorite) CASTING: According to IMDb: Patrick Gilmore
    • Marion and Jack. Marion is a waitress and Jack is her son. As she hurries to get dressed for work, she tries to get Jack out of bed so that he won't be late for an important interview. He apparently decided to "cancel" the interview because he doesn't fall into the proper "skill set". He's a gamer and stays up to all hours of the night playing on his computer and is thus hard to get out of bed in the morning. Marion has to hurry to work and sadly leaves her son in his bed. (The significance of Jack to the stranded crew is not apparent in this audition side, but it does appear that he and Eli share a common interest and might know each other or have the same understanding of the game created by Rush's team that simulates the control consoles on the Destiny.)
    • Adam Brody. A scientist who finds some testing equipment on the Destiny that is used to study the "black oatmeal" compound that is part of the ship's air scrubbing system that is malfunctioning. He's also working on how to seal off leaks. (described by Mallozzi as holding "a lot of promise" in becoming a fan favorite) CASTING: According to IMDb: Peter Kelamis
    • Phillips. A scientist who is among a group of six who must figure out how to fix the air scrubbing system on the Destiny by studying a residue that looks like "black oatmeal".
    • Hearst. A scientist who is also among the group who must determine the composition of the "black oatmeal" that is vital to the air scrubbing system of the Destiny.
    • Henry. He has technical knowledge and is able to read console indicators concerning the Destiny's air quality. He's working with Brody on the ship's air supply problem. (described by Mallozzi as holding "a lot of promise" in becoming a fan favorite)
    • McDonald. He asks for a status report from Henry and Brody concerning the air supply problem on the ship.

  • MGM: Across the Universe, November 5, 2008 — "One of the things I'm really excited about is that we’re looking for people who are a little more identifiable and contemporary. I always thought one of the things that was attractive about the original series was the 'everyman on the street' point of view that O’Neill had to science fiction. It made the characters identifiable. They were more like we would be in a science fiction situation, and how we would react. And that’s what we’re trying to do with the new show – create characters that are going to be challenged by the situation. The team that ends up on the ship is not really who was supposed to go, and in some cases they’re very unprepared and unqualified to be in that situation. So they don’t have all the answers as quickly, and the challenges are greater than they would be for people who have seen it all and don’t have as far to go as characters when they encounter an incredible situation. ... It’s an all new cast. There will certainly be plenty of opportunity for cross over, and there certainly might be some familiar faces in the premiere and in subsequent episodes. But the core of the show is all new. ... We’re certainly looking at some [well-known] names, for one of the lead roles in particular. But for the most part many of the cast will be either new faces, or people you’ve seen in other stuff but maybe aren’t as aware of." — Robert C. Cooper, co-creator, executive producer, writer.

I watched the Chloe‘s, Scott’s (aka Nash‘), and Tamara’s, and weighed in on my favorites. For what it’s worth. The final decision rests in Brad and Robert’s infinitely capable hands. Cooper started to say there would be one at least, and Wright clarified that there will be two. Cooper and Wright want the crew to represent our society, with all its complexity and realism. They want it to be identifiable to as many people as they can. Not for ratings, but to portray humanity." — Michelle, Solutions.
