Summary

Most likely named after the Chinese general and tactician (and author of several books including The Art of War), the Sun Tzu is a Daedalus-class starship that followed the USS Apollo off of the assembly lines and was apparently given to the Chinese to crew.* (Stargate Atlantis: 5.20 "Enemy at the Gate")

Crew

Not much is known about the crew of the ship other than it is apparently manned by Chinese personnel.*

Mission Summary

  • Engagement of Wraith Super-Hive in the Milky Way: Although not known for certain if this was the ship's maiden voyage, it was the first mission mentioned by Col. Steven Caldwell, commander of sister ship Daedalus, when he reported the tactical situation inside the Milky Way when a Wraith super-hive ship made its approach to Earth from the Pegasus Galaxy. The Sun Tzu and Apollo jointly engaged the super-hive on the edge of the galaxy, but weren't able to stop the invader due to its nearly impenetrable hull. Both ships suffered major damage, with the Sun Tzu faring less favorably than the Apollo. After the Sun Tzu began venting atmosphere, the crew abandoned the ship and boarded the Apollo, which had severe engine damage and was left a month away from the nearest planet with a Stargate. Col. Abe Ellis of the Apollo reported the aftermath of the battle to Stargate Command on Earth via a subspace message. (Stargate Atlantis: 5.20 "Enemy at the Gate")

Notes

* The Chinese connection to the ship within canon is merely its name, but executive producer Joseph Mallozzi clarified that the ship was indeed a Daedalus-class ship and crewed by Chinese personnel in his weblog in entries dated January 31, 2009, and February 1, 2009. This follows along well with canon in that the Chinese were part of the Gate Alliance Treaty and International Oversight Advisory (IOA) and were present when the Russians were given the Korolev as a trade for the US's keeping of the Stargate, which they had been leasing from the Russians for several years.
