TEASER
INT—DESTINY CONTROL INTERFACE ROOM
[Brody is sitting in front of a control panel, watching the stone lab where Barnes and Volker are sitting at the table. Volker is reading a book and Barnes is looking at it over his shoulder. Young is standing next to Brody.]
BRODY
Day six, shifts running continuously around the clock, just like you ordered, but still no connection.
INT—STONE LAB
[Barnes and Volker look up as the door opens. Chloe enters, passing a guard by the door.]
CHLOE
I'm up next.
[Volker gets up, closing his book, but has to steady himself with his other hand on the table.]
BARNES
You okay?
VOLKER
Yeah, leg fell asleep.
[Volker walks out, and Chloe sits down at the table. Barnes operates the computer on the table.]
BARNES
Okay.
[Chloe touches the communication stone on the device, then puts her chin in her hand, waiting.]
INT—OBSERVATION DECK
[Rush and Eli are sitting at a table playing chess with the set Rush carved. Rush moves a rook into position.]
RUSH
Check mate.
[Eli looks blankly at the board.]
RUSH
Again.
(resetting the board)
You might want to put a bit of effort into it this time.
ELI
Doesn't it bother you? We don't know if that bomb was defused in time.
RUSH
You're worried about your mom.
ELI
I'm worried about everyone.
[Rush nods.]
RUSH
So, again.
[Eli laughs.]
RUSH
Come on. Take your mind off it for half an hour or so. Couple of minutes, the way you're playing.
INT—CONTROL INTERFACE ROOM
[The control panel screen shows the stone lab. Barnes and Chloe are at the table, Barnes resting her head on her hand and Chloe sleeping. In the control interface room, Brody is sitting in front of one control panel. Volker is standing in front of another.]
VOLKER
"Also Sprach Zarathustra". It's the theme from "2001: A Space Odyssey".
BRODY
So, why didn't you just say that?
VOLKER
Because that's not what it's called. It's called "Also Sprach Zarathustra". Thus spoke Zarathustra. It's by Strauss.
BRODY
Yeah, but nobody knows it by that name, so why not just say the name that people know?
VOLKER
Look, you asked me what my favorite piece of music was, and I'm just telling you. That's—
BRODY
Yeah, I'm just saying—
VOLKER
—what it is. It's the one piece that reminds me of the very moment I wanted to be an astrophysicist.
BRODY
Right, when you saw "2001"?
VOLKER
Yes.
BRODY
That's my point, that people know that song only because of the movie.
VOLKER
It's not a song, Brody!
BRODY
Oh, it's not a song now?
[Volker looks unwell and leans forward over a console.]
BRODY
You all right?
VOLKER
Yes. It's you, you get me wound up with your stupid—
BRODY
(noticing his screen)
Hey, hey!
(into radio)
Colonel Young, this is Brody. Come in.
YOUNG
(over radio)
Go ahead.
[The screen shows Chloe, sitting up.]
BRODY
(into radio)
I think we have a connection.
INT—CORRIDOR
[Young arrives at the stone lab door and punches the button.]
INT—STONE LAB
[The door opens, and Young enters.]
YOUNG
You're aboard the Destiny. I'm Colonel Young. Who are you?
GINN/CHLOE
I'm Ginn. What happened?
END TEASER
OPENING CREDIT
INT—DESTINY CORRIDOR
[Eli is walking quickly along the corridor to the stone lab.]
GINN/CHLOE
(voice)
I had some trouble breathing at first.
INT—STONE LAB
[Ginn/Chloe is sitting at the table, talking to Young and Rush.]
GINN/CHLOE
Doctor Perry's condition was difficult to adjust to.
[Eli enters.]
GINN/CHLOE
Eli!
ELI
Ginn, it's you? Really?
[Ginn/Chloe smiles and nods.]
RUSH
What happened then?
GINN/CHLOE
Your people from Homeworld Security asked me questions about the Lucian Alliance. I answered as best I could and then, nothing.
ELI
Nothing.
GINN/CHLOE
It's strange. One moment I was answering questions, and the next thing I knew I was sitting here.
[Ginn/Chloe looks down at her hands then picks up the small mirror from the table. The reflection is of Chloe.]
GINN/CHLOE
(anxiously)
What happened? Why didn't I return to my own body?
[Rush and Eli appear uncomfortable. Young steps forward and goes to sit opposite Ginn/Chloe.]
YOUNG
Ginn, while you were connected to Doctor Perry, one of your people, Simeon, he killed you.
[Ginn/Chloe looks shocked.]
YOUNG
And we received confirmation that Doctor Perry died on Earth as well.
GINN/CHLOE
That, that can't be true.
[Ginn/Chloe looks up at Eli, who looks sadly back at her.]
GINN/CHLOE
Then how am I still here?
[Young looks around at Rush, but no answers are forthcoming.]
INT—INFIRMARY
[TJ is sitting on a bed looking at a piece of medical equipment, a computer next to her showing a schematic of the device. Volker enters.]
VOLKER
Hey, TJ. You burning the midnight oil?
TJ
Well, since Rush broke Destiny's master code, all these Ancient medical devices are now accessible to us. So I'm kind of taking a crash course in them, although it would help if I were fluent in Ancient.
[As TJ speaks, she turns around and looks at Volker, who appears unwell.]
TJ
You okay?
VOLKER
Oh yeah, I'm, uh, feeling a little under the weather, trouble sleeping. I was wondering if you could give me something. A good night's sleep would do me wonders.
TJ
Yeah, yeah, sure. Hang on.
[TJ gets up and walks over to a cabinet. She pulls out a plastic tub of white powder and measures some into another container as she speaks. Meanwhile, Volker is unsteady on his feet.]
TJ
I, ah, I got just the thing. Ah, let's see. Here. Just going to take this, mix it with water, give it about a half hour or so and, ah, it'll calm you down, help you relax and maybe—
[There is a heavy thud. TJ looks around and sees Volker lying on the floor.]
INT—YOUNG'S QUARTERS
[Eli, Young, Rush and Scott are having a conversation.]
ELI
It doesn't make any sense.
YOUNG
Well, obviously we don't know as much about the stones as we thought.
RUSH
Look, Ginn was, ah, Ginn was murdered so, therefore, the connection wasn't properly severed at the communication device. Then perhaps her consciousness became displaced.
SCOTT
Displaced?
ELI
Floating around, like a radio signal. Chloe just happened to be the one to tune into it.
SCOTT
But why her? We've had people on stone duty round the clock for days now. Why didn't any of them connect with Ginn?
RUSH
Well, perhaps because Chloe was the only one who fell asleep. Her consciousness relaxed just enough to allow an opening for a connection.
[Young appears skeptical.]
RUSH
Well, I don't know Colonel; it's just conjecture at this point.
SCOTT
I'm sorry, but the bigger question here is, if Ginn is in Chloe's body, whose body is Chloe connected to?
RUSH
Yeah.
INT—INFIRMARY
[Volker is lying on a bed, and TJ is taking his blood pressure.]
TJ
How long have you been feeling like this?
VOLKER
A few days now.
TJ
"A few" meaning…
VOLKER
A week, maybe two… Maybe a month.
TJ
Your blood pressure's high. One-seventy-six over one-ten.
VOLKER
I used to take blood pressure pills. Hypertension. I ran out shortly after we got to Destiny.
TJ
Why didn't you tell me?
VOLKER
Well, there's nothing you could about it. It's not like you could write me another prescription.
TJ
No, I have medicinals that could help. Tea leaves have, have been effective in improving circulation.
VOLKER
TJ, I was feeling fine. I didn't think it was a problem.
TJ
Hypertension is often symptomless but dangerous. Didn't your doctor tell you this?
[Volker just raises his eyebrows.]
TJ
Okay. Look, one of these Ancient machines is used for diagnostics, including blood-work, so I'm going to run a few tests.
VOLKER
I just think a good night's sleep is all I'm going to need.
TJ
Probably. Let's just be sure, okay?
[TJ walks away; Volker stays on the bed. He looks worried.]
INT—STONE LAB
[James hesitantly places a stone on the communication device as Young, Eli and Ginn/Chloe look on. As James slowly lifts her hand from the stone, she lets out a breath.]
JAMES
Nothing.
ELI
So, whoever Chloe's connected to, they're definitely not on Earth.
INT—VOLKER'S QUARTERS
[The door opens, and TJ is standing there, expression unhappy.]
VOLKER
Wow, look at that face. That can only mean good news, right?
TJ
May I come in?
VOLKER
Yeah.
[TJ comes into the room, and Volker closes the door.]
TJ
Your kidneys are failing. End-stage renal disease.
VOLKER
Both of them?
TJ
Kidney disease tends to attack both kidneys at the same time.
VOLKER
(upset)
Okay. Okay, can we do anything, any of your, your medicinals?
TJ
No, ah, the problem with kidney disease is, by the time you have symptoms, it's already too far advanced. On Earth, the next step would be dialysis.
VOLKER
Um, the machines in the infirmary, do any of them…?
[TJ shakes her head sadly.]
TJ
No, I already checked. It's mostly testing equipment, some devices for use during surgery, but nothing for dialysis. The only other option for treatment would…would be a transplant.
[Volker looks horrified.]
INT—CORRIDOR
[Eli and Ginn/Chloe are walking along a corridor.]
GINN/CHLOE
Rush killed him?
ELI
Chased his halfway across a desert planet. I wanted to go too, but—
GINN/CHLOE
No, I'm glad you didn't. I'd hate to see you get hurt.
ELI
Hey, I wasn't going to get hurt!
INT—GINN'S QUARTERS
[Eli and Ginn/Chloe arrive at some quarters. Ginn/Chloe laughs.]
ELI
I was just so… I had to do something. After what he did, I wasn't—
[Ginn/Chloe takes Eli's face in her hands and kisses him. Eli kisses her then pulls away.]
ELI
Whoa. Ah, no, it, it's just…
[Ginn/Chloe looks at the mirror and sees Chloe's refection.]
CHLOE
(in mirror)
I'm sorry, I…
[Ginn/Chloe walks across the room to sit down. Eli follows her.]
ELI
No! No, no, no, no, no, no. It's okay. Believe me, there's nothing more I want to do right now than kiss you.
GINN/CHLOE
What's going to happen to me? Is there any way that I can get back into my own body?
ELI
(hesitantly)
After you… The next planet we stopped at… It was beautiful. We buried your body there. Had a memorial service. It, it was, uh…
GINN/CHLOE
Then, where will I return to?
ELI
I don't know. I mean, we don't even know who Chloe is connected to on the other end. If-if she's safe.
GINN/CHLOE
I've been trying to remember more, but I just can't—
[Eli strokes her cheek, but at the same time, Ginn/Chloe struggles for breath and clutches at her throat.]
ELI
Whoa, I'm sorry. Ginn? Ginn!
[Ginn/Chloe collapses on the floor, choking. Eli runs to the door.]
ELI
(calling)
Help! Somebody help!
[Eli runs back to Ginn/Chloe, who is on the floor gasping for breath.]
ELI
Hey, hey!
[Ginn/Chloe coughs and lies down with her head in Eli's lap, her breathing becoming easier. He strokes her hair.]
ELI
Are you all right?
[She nods.]
ELI
What just happened?
GINN/CHLOE
I don't know.
INT—INFIRMARY
[Ginn/Chloe is lying on a bed. TJ is standing beside her.]
TJ
(to Ginn/Chloe)
I'll be right back.
[TJ goes over to where Eli, Young, Scott and Rush are waiting on the other side of the infirmary.]
TJ
As far as I can tell, there's nothing physically wrong with her.
SCOTT
So do you have any idea what caused it?
TJ
I have no idea.
ELI
It was weird. We were just talking and then suddenly, she was choking. No reason.
RUSH
Ginn was, ah, strangled by Simeon. Now, brain function is really just a series of electrical signals, energy which is no doubt the foundation of how the stones work. Now, she was murdered before she was disconnected.
ELI
So, what? The energy was disrupted, resulting in some kind of glitch that made her replay the event?
[Rush inclines his head to indicate that it is a possibility.]
SCOTT
Do you think we should disconnect the stone?
ELI
If we disconnect, who knows what'll happen to Ginn? We may not be able to get her back.
SCOTT
Eli, if she has another attack, Chloe could be harmed.
ELI
But, but TJ just said there's nothing physically wrong with her. I just think that we should study this. See if there's some way that we can save Ginn without harming either of them.
RUSH
I agree. It warrants further study.
YOUNG
All right, let's go ahead and we'll keep an eye on her. Hopefully, this is a one-time event.
[Eli, Rush, Scott and Young start to walk away, but TJ stops Young.]
TJ
Sir, there's something else I need to talk to you about.
INT—CORRIDOR
[TJ and Young are walking.]
YOUNG
Transplant? Well, how soon?
TJ
As soon as possible.
YOUNG
Well, we can't connect to Earth so using the stones to bring a doctor on board is out of the question.
TJ
Yes, Sir.
YOUNG
Given the obvious limitations of this ship, is that type of surgery even possible?
TJ
We have access to more Ancient devices as well as a pretty extensive medical database since Rush cracked the code.
YOUNG
Anything in there about organ transplants?
TJ
Probably, I don't know. I've just begun to search through it all.
YOUNG
All right, well sounds like you've got to get back at it.
TJ
Sir, listen. In order to do this procedure, we're going to need a compatible donor.
YOUNG
Well, you have the records for everybody's blood type.
TJ
We're also going to need to tissue-type to get a thorough match.
YOUNG
Okay.
TJ
It's going to be extremely difficult. There's not that many people on board this ship. To get an adequate match, it-it's a long shot at best.
YOUNG
TJ, let's just, first things first. Start testing, let's see if this is even possible.
TJ
Yes, Sir.
YOUNG
Okay.
[TJ walks away, sighing heavily.]
INT—INFIRMARY
[Scott and Greer enter. TJ is at a desk, while other personnel work at various places around the room.]
SCOTT
TJ?
TJ
Oh, hey. Thanks for coming. I cross-checked blood types. There's eighteen people on board the ship who are compatible with Doctor Volker. Among them are you two. It's not too complicated, I just need to draw some blood if that's okay.
GREER
Let's do it.
TJ
You first?
GREER
I'm a Marine. We're always first.
[TJ prepares to draw blood from Greer while he removes his shirt.]
SCOTT
So, ah, what are the chances of, ah, getting a good match here?
TJ
It's a matter of degrees. We're looking for certain genetic markers on white blood cells. No one on board the ship is related to him, so that rules out the best possible match. But hopefully we can find one close enough that warrants doing the transplant.
[TJ sighs.]
SCOTT
TJ, you're going to be okay. You can do this.
TJ
Yeah, piece of cake.
INT—GINN'S QUARTERS
[Ginn/Chloe is sitting on the bed in somebody's quarters. Eli enters.]
GINN/CHLOE
How's it going?
ELI
Well, Rush has some ideas, but we're still working on it. How are you doing?
GINN/CHLOE
I feel…different. It's not like the last time I used the communication stones.
ELI
Well, what's different? I mean, aside from the choking part.
GINN/CHLOE
Something just doesn't feel right.
[Eli sits down beside her and takes her hand in his.]
ELI
We're going to figure out what's going on here. I promise. I'm not going to lose you again.
[Ginn/Chloe puts her head on Eli's shoulder.]
INT—YOUNG'S QUARTERS
[Young is sitting at the table, writing. There is a knock at the door, and Rush enters.]
RUSH
Heard about Doctor Volker.
YOUNG
Yeah, tough break.
RUSH
You know, this surgery is, ah, fraught with danger. Even in the best of circumstances—
YOUNG
Are you compatible?
RUSH
(confused)
Sorry?
YOUNG
Your blood type. Are you compatible?
RUSH
No.
YOUNG
I'm just checking. Go on.
RUSH
Look, I don't want to lose anyone on this ship, Colonel, but the fact is, a transplant risks not just one life but two.
YOUNG
I'm not just going to sit back and let the man die without at least trying to figure out something.
ELI
(over radio)
TJ! We need you in Ginn's quarters, now!
INT—GINN'S QUARTERS
[Ginn/Chloe is lying on the bed, choking.]
TJ
(over radio)
I'm on my way.
ELI
(into radio)
Hurry!
[Chloe sits up.]
CHLOE
(choking)
Eli, what's happening to me?
ELI
Ginn—
CHLOE
(choking)
No! Help me!
ELI
Chloe?
[Chloe collapses unconscious into Eli's arms.]
INT—INFIRMARY
[Ginn/Chloe wakes up in a bed in the infirmary. TJ, Eli, Rush and Young are at her side. Volker is in another bed being attended by another medic.]
TJ
Chloe?
GINN/CHLOE
No, Ginn. What happened?
ELI
You had another choking attack. You switched with Chloe for a minute there.
RUSH
Look, when you switched with her, where did you go? Was there anyone else there with you?
GINN/CHLOE
No, I don't, um… I-I remember not being able to breathe, and then I woke up here. Just now.
[Scott enters.]
SCOTT
Colonel?
YOUNG
Yeah.
[Young goes over to Scott, a few feet away.]
SCOTT
I, ah, I checked with Corporal Barnes. The connection wasn't cut at any time.
YOUNG
Really?
[TJ goes over to Young and Scott, followed by Rush and Eli.]
TJ
Then how was Chloe able to switch back with her?
RUSH
See, I don't believe that Chloe is connected with anyone at the other end. I believe her consciousness has been in her own body the entire time.
ELI
Suppressed by Ginn's?
TJ
How is that possible?
RUSH
I don't know, I'll have to further study the communication device.
SCOTT
We should pull the stone.
RUSH
No, no, no. We have to find out why this is happening first.
SCOTT
Not at the risk of Chloe's life, Rush.
RUSH
This is crucial for understanding how these communication stones work.
YOUNG
Figure it out, okay? Because the next time she has an attack I'm going to pull the stone.
ELI
No, no! You can't—
YOUNG
No hesitation.
[Eli looks angrily after Young as he walks away.]
INT—CORRIDOR
[Scott, Ginn/Chloe and Eli are walking along he corridor.]
GINN/CHLOE
I don't want to hurt Chloe.
SCOTT
(patting her on the shoulder)
Yeah, I know. I know you don't.
GINN/CHLOE
I agree with Colonel Young. If I start choking again, disconnect me.
ELI
Hopefully, we find a solution before then.
CHLOE
Solution?
ELI
To the situation.
INT—GINN'S QUARTERS
[Chloe stops just inside the door. Eli and Scott turn around and look at her.]
SCOTT
Chloe?
CHLOE
What's going on here?
SCOTT
Is it you?
CHLOE
Yes! Matt, what happened?
SCOTT
Ginn connected with you when you used the communication stones.
CHLOE
Ginn? Well, I, I thought… I thought she was dead.
SCOTT
Are you okay?
CHLOE
Yes, I'm fine.
SCOTT
(into radio)
Corporal Barnes, did you just disconnect the stones?
BARNES
(over radio)
No, Sir. Still active.
CHLOE
What do you mean? She's still connected to me?
ELI
Do you feel any different? Can you sense someone else? You know, inside your brain?
GINN/CHLOE
What?
ELI
Ginn?
GINN/CHLOE
Yes.
SCOTT
Oh man, this is nuts.
GINN/CHLOE
What happened?
ELI
You switched with Chloe for a moment there.
SCOTT
Wait a minute. You don't remember it?
GINN/CHLOE
No. It's all so strange. I feel weaker.
[Eli takes her by the arm and leads her to the sofa.]
ELI
Here, sit down.
SCOTT
(to Ginn/Chloe)
I'm sorry, can you just excuse us a second here? Okay.
(to Eli)
Eli?
[Scott and Eli walk outside the door.]
SCOTT
Hey. What?!
ELI
I don't know. I mean, we can't be sure of anything until—
SCOTT
Eli?
ELI
Her energy might be decaying. The radio signal getting weaker, harder to keep tuned in. Matt, even without disconnecting the communication stone, we might not have much time before we lose Ginn completely.
INT—INFIRMARY
[TJ is studying the Ancient medical database. Park and Brody are at other computers nearby. Volker is lying on a bed, also working on a laptop computer.]
PARK
How's that translation program working for you?
TJ
Good. A lot of information here. Some, some good stuff about organ transplants.
BRODY
Hey, do you see this?
[Brody picks up a device and shows it to TJ. She gets up and goes to look.]
BRODY
According to the database, this is kind of a ligature device. Cuts and cauterizes at the same time.
TJ
I thought it did something like that, but I could never get it to work.
VOLKER
Hey, TJ. There's a whole section here on stem-cell-like procedure for post-op anti-rejection. It's only a hundred and seventy-six pages. A little light afternoon reading.
PARK
(summarizing as she reads)
Still a lot of other potential post-operative drawbacks. Infection, high blood pressure, erectile dysfunction.
[Everyone looks around. Brody starts laughing, is followed by Park and TJ. They try to regain their composure.]
VOLKER
Why is that funny?
[They all start laughing again. TJ tries to regain her composure again.]
TJ
Ahem.
INT—STONE LAB
[Rush and Eli are at a computer studying the communication device. Young is standing at the door.]
RUSH
After everything that's happened recently, we can't be sure this thing's even working properly any more.
YOUNG
What is it you're trying to do?
ELI
We're trying to see if there's a way we can intercept Ginn's signal and download it into the ship's memory banks.
YOUNG
Okay. Then what? What is she? Is she just another program in the ship's computer?
RUSH
Well, she'd be preserved, for the time being, until we can determine the viability of downloading her consciousness into another body.
TJ
(over radio)
Colonel.
YOUNG
(into radio)
TJ.
TJ
(over radio)
We have a match. Two, actually.
INT—YOUNG'S QUARTERS
[TJ and Young are addressing Greer and Morrison.]
TJ
Tissue-typing takes a look at six specific antigens in the blood of the recipient and the donor. The best compatibility, obviously, is a six-antigen match. It happens most often in families. The two of you, you both have a four-antigen match with Doctor Volker. Which is surprisingly good, considering.
MORRISON
The equipment that you used, how accurate is it? Because I want to make sure—
GREER
I'll do it.
YOUNG
Sergeant, listen to me. There are a lot of risks involved in this procedure, and you don't have to decide right this instant. Think it over.
GREER
No need, Sir.
(to TJ)
I'm good to go, Lieutenant.
[TJ nods.]
INT—INFIRMARY
[Greer is sitting on a bed. TJ is standing in front of him; Park and James are standing nearby. Volker is still in his bed just across from them. Greer looks around at Park and James as TJ talks.]
TJ
The, the Ancients wrote about a procedure to eliminate post-operative rejection of transplanted organs. It involves removing bone-marrow stem cells from the donor prior to surgery, and then implanting them into the recipient at the time of the transplant. It produces a state called mixed chimerism, which is basically an immune system that blends elements of both the recipient and the donor.
GREER
You need some bone marrow. So go ahead and take it.
TJ
Okay. I can give you something to put you to sleep during the procedure.
GREER
Don't worry about it. We're short on meds; you don't need to waste any.
TJ
It's really painful, Ron. It requires sticking a large-bore needle into your hip bone. The pressure—
GREER
The-the-the sooner you do it, the sooner it gets done.
TJ
All right. I'm going to need you to lie on your stomach.
[Greer lies down. Park tentatively grips his ankles while TJ prepares to do the procedure.]
VOLKER
Thank you.
GREER
No big deal.
VOLKER
Well, yes it is. It's a-it's a very big deal.
GREER
You'd do the same thing for me.
[Volker looks uncomfortable.]
TJ
Okay.
[TJ swabs the area around his hip while James puts her hands on Greer's back and shoulder to hold him still.]
TJ
I'm going to need you to hold really still.
[Greer nods. TJ positions the needle above Greer's hip.]
TJ
Ready?
[Just as TJ touches Greer's skin with the needle, he lets out a loud wail. TJ and James look worried, and Park jumps back in horror. Greer laughs, and James slaps him in the side of his head.]
GREER
That was a joke! I was just kidding.
JAMES
Okay, well knock it off.
[Everyone takes their positions again.]
GREER
Okay, okay.
[TJ uses all her strength to force the needle into Greer's hip. He clenches his fists against the pain.]
INT—GINN'S QUARTERS
[Eli and Ginn/Chloe are sitting together on the sofa. There is a knock at the door, and Eli gets up to open it. Scott enters.]
SCOTT
The Colonel said you and Doctor Rush were working on something with the communication device.
ELI
Yeah, no luck.
SCOTT
Okay, so what's next?
[Eli shrugs.]
SCOTT
We're kind of running out of time here.
CHLOE
Matt?
SCOTT
Chloe?
[Chloe is sitting on the sofa. Scott goes and sits on the table in front of her.]
ELI
She's switching back at forth more frequently now.
SCOTT
How are you feeling?
CHLOE
Weird. Tired.
SCOTT
(to Eli)
This whole thing's affecting both of them.
CHLOE
Am I still connected to Ginn?
ELI
Yeah.
SCOTT
But Rush is working on it, and we're, we're going to figure this out.
CHLOE
Is she all right?
ELI
Yeah. Well, she's fading. We're trying to figure out a way to preserve her consciousness without harming you.
CHLOE
No, I'm fine. Don't worry about me. Do what you need to do to help her.
[Scott takes Chloe's hands in his.]
SCOTT
No, not at the risk of hurting you. I won't let that happen.
ELI
(pointedly)
No one will let that happen.
[Ginn/Chloe is sitting on the sofa. She pulls her hands away from Scott's.]
GINN/CHLOE
Did we switch again?
ELI
Ginn.
SCOTT
I'm sorry, will you excuse us a second?
[Scott and Eli step into the corridor outside the door.]
SCOTT
Look, how long is this going to go on?
ELI
She hasn't had another choking episode.
SCOTT
Yet. Why risk it? Look man, I-I know you miss her, I know how much it hurt to lose her—
ELI
This isn't about me, Matt. I'm trying to save two people—
PERRY/CHLOE
What's going on here?
SCOTT
Chloe?
PERRY/GINN
No, Amanda Perry.
INT—CORRIDOR
[Rush is running along the corridor to Ginn's quarters.]
INT—GINN'S QUARTERS
[Rush comes in, and he and Perry/Chloe exchange a smile.]
RUSH
Mandy!
PERRY/CHLOE
Yes, Nick. It's me.
RUSH
(moved)
I wondered if you were in there. If there was…any chance that you survived.
[They hug, Eli and Scott looking on uncomfortably.]
INT—BRIDGE
[Young is sitting in the command chair. Eli, Rush and Scott are there.]
ELI
We think Doctor Perry's been in there the whole time, but both she and Ginn are fading. Chloe's becoming more prominent now.
RUSH
Look, we're going to have to act fast on this, Colonel. Otherwise we're going to lose both of them.
[Eli nods.]
RUSH
Amanda's consciousness is already far weaker than the other two.
YOUNG
All right. Well, do we have any solutions yet?
RUSH
Well, I've had no luck with the communications device, but I do have another idea. The neural interface chair.
[Scott and Young book look annoyed.]
RUSH
Now, I believe with that, we can isolate each consciousness and upload them into Destiny's memory bank. Like Franklin.
SCOTT
Wait, like what?!
RUSH
I've seen and spoken to Doctor Franklin many times now on the bridge.
ELI
So that's what happened to him? He was uploaded to the ship?
RUSH
Well, I can't say for certain, but I do know that Destiny has a neural link with the people on board this ship that's caused us to see things before.
ELI
(looking around)
Are you seeing him now?
RUSH
No.
(turning to Young)
I managed to sever the link shortly after your experience with the alien battle simulations.
YOUNG
Always the chair with you.
RUSH
Well, you asked for a solution.
SCOTT
Well, it didn't work the first time when Chloe was becoming an alien.
RUSH
Yeah, this is different. I know what we're dealing with here.
SCOTT
So there's no danger to Chloe at all?
RUSH
I didn't say that! Did I say that?! I'm going to have to remove some of the safeguards I put into the chair's programming, yes. But I've done the calculations. Chances of her being harmed are minimal.
SCOTT
Colonel, this is not our decision to make.
[Young nods.]
INT—INFIRMARY
[TJ is washing rubber gloves and sterilizing and laying out equipment for surgery. She looks over at Volker then stops and takes a deep breath, clearly stressed. She turns to speak to Brody and Park, who are at computers.]
TJ
(anxiously)
You know guys, I, uh, I've got to go stretch my legs. I'll be back in a couple of minutes. Okay?
BRODY
Yeah.
[TJ leaves the infirmary, looking at Volker and Greer in their beds on her way out.]
VOLKER
(to Greer)
I have never liked hospitals or doctors.
GREER
Well, this is not a hospital, and TJ is no doctor, so you're fine.
VOLKER
Thanks, that's comforting. All things considered, though, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
GREER
I hear that.
VOLKER
I mean, I miss home. Sitting in the backyard, warm summer night, sipping a beer, staring at the stars through my telescope, you know. I loved that backyard.
INT—GINN'S QUARTERS
[Chloe and Scott are sitting together.]
CHLOE
All right.
SCOTT
You're sure?
CHLOE
Yeah. I don't want to disconnect the stone and risk losing them forever. We need to do this. Whatever it takes to help them.
SCOTT
Okay.
INT—OBSERVATION DECK
[TJ is sitting deep in thought, her radio on the bench beside her. Young enters.]
YOUNG
Hey, TJ. I just stopped by the infirmary, Volker looks worse. You know, he and, ah, Greer are ready to do this. I know you're scared.
TJ
This is a major surgery. It is complicated, and it's dangerous.
YOUNG
And if you do nothing, Volker dies.
TJ
I do the surgery, and they both could die.
YOUNG
That is a risk that both men have accepted. Listen to me, I'm not going to order you to do this, because you know that it needs to be done and you know that you are the only person who can do it.
[Young walks out, leaving TJ sitting alone.]
INT—GINN'S QUARTERS
[Perry/Chloe and Rush are sitting together.]
RUSH
It's not permanent, Mandy. But my hope is to, um, find a way of putting you into another body. A fresh start.
PERRY/CHLOE
(smiling wistfully)
It's been my dream ever since the accident.
[Rush puts his hand in hers.]
INT—INFIRMARY
[TJ enters. She looks around to find Greer and Volker's beds empty.]
TJ
Where'd they go?
[Brody and Park look up from their computers.]
BRODY
Who?
(seeing the empty beds)
Oh!
INT—HYDROPONICS DOME
[The door opens and Greer and Volker are standing there. Greer is holding Volker up by the arm.]
VOLKER
Wow! This place has really filled out!
GREER
As close to a backyard as we're going to find on this ship.
[They go in and sit down on a bench among the plants and look up at the stars through the dome.]
GREER
You and me, we're going to be fine. You can trust that.
TJ
(over radio)
Greer, where the hell are you?
GREER
(into radio)
Took a little walk, TJ. Getting some fresh air.
TJ
(over radio)
Is Volker with you?
[Greer hands Volker the radio.]
VOLKER
(into radio)
Yes, I am.
INT—INFIRMARY
[Volker is in his bed. The theme to "2001: A Space Odyssey" is playing. Park, Becker and James look around, disconcerted. Volker lifts his head off the pillow and looks at Brody.]
BRODY
Thought a little music might help you relax.
PARK
The theme to "2001"?
[Brody points towards Park.]
BRODY
Ah!
[Volker lays his head back down.]
BRODY
It's not very relaxing, is it?
VOLKER
No!
[Brody presses a button on the music player but a pop song starts playing instead. As everyone looks at him, he fumbles with the music player dock, eventually opening the back and letting the batteries fall to the floor. He picks them up and puts them on the table with the now-silent player. TJ is preparing Greer for surgery.]
TJ
You ready?
[Greer nods.]
TJ
Good.
[She injects an anesthetic into Greer's IV, and he closes his eyes.]
INT—GINN'S QUARTERS
[Eli and Ginn/Chloe are sitting together.]
GINN/CHLOE
How will I exist?
ELI
You'll live inside Destiny's computer system. You'll be a part of the ship. Literally.
GINN/CHLOE
And when I'm switched off? What will happen to me then?
ELI
Now, that can't happen. The only thing that we can switch on and off is the ability to communicate with you. Remember, this is only temporary. The SGC knows of alien races with the ability to download a consciousness into a host body. Hell, the Ancient database may even have information on it. We just need to find it and figure out a way to do it here on the ship. I-I know, I know it isn't perfect, but we can be together. Just to see you, talk to you, hear your voice, it can be enough. Can't it?
[Ginn/Chloe starts choking.]
ELI
Ginn!
INT—INFIRMARY
[Brody is at a computer, watching the video feed from the device TJ is using in Greer's surgery.]
BRODY
Okay, right there, that's the lumbar vein coming off he back of the renal vein. You want to cut that.
[TJ manipulates the device as she, James and Park watch on another monitor above the bed.]
TJ
Okay, got it.
YOUNG
(over radio)
TJ, have you started the surgery yet?
[Becker holds out the radio for TJ.]
TJ
(into radio)
Ah, yes, Sir. About thirty minutes ago.
INT—CHAIR ROOM
[Rush is working at the control panel. Young is there too.]
YOUNG
(into radio)
Ginn had another choking attack.
TJ
(over radio)
Is she all right?
YOUNG
(into radio)
Yeah, she's okay. It passed.
[Scott and Eli are helping Ginn/Chloe into the room.]
YOUNG
(into radio)
But I'm not waiting any longer. We've got to do the transfer now.
[Scott and Eli put Ginn/Chloe in the neural interface chair.]
TJ
(over radio)
I'm going to be here another four or five hours, Sir. I can't leave.
YOUNG
(into radio)
All right, well keep going. We'll, ah…
INT—INFIRMARY
[Becker is still holding the radio for TJ.]
YOUNG
(over radio)
We'll manage.
TJ
(into radio)
Copy.
[TJ resumes surgery.]
INT—CHAIR ROOM
[Ginn/Chloe is in the neural interface chair. Eli is standing beside her, holding her hand. She nods to Young.]
YOUNG
(to Rush)
Go ahead.
[Eli steps back as Rush activates the chair. The white light above it illuminates, the wrist and ankle straps snap into place and the head attachment swings around.]
INT—INFIRMARY
[TJ continues to operate.]
TJ
Okay.
(to James)
Ready?
(to Park)
The retractors, please. I want you to pull up.
[Park hands two of the three retractors to James and they use them to lift Greer's flesh, opening the incision. TJ removes his kidney and places it an a dish of ice being held by Park.]
INT—CHAIR ROOM
[Ginn/Chloe is sitting in the chair, her eyes closed. Rush is at the console behind her. Eli goes to look at the screen. Scott looks on anxiously.]
RUSH
All right, I'm reading two energy signatures, each separate from Chloe's.
ELI
Now, now are we sure that that one's Chloe's?
RUSH
Well, it appears to be the dominant presence so I think we can safely assume that it's Chloe. I'm transferring the other two.
[Ginn/Chloe starts choking.]
SCOTT
She's choking again!
YOUNG
Turn it off.
RUSH
I can't, the-the transfer's already begun.
[They all watch as Ginn/Chloe is choking. The lights begin to flicker. Ginn/Chloe sees the silhouette of Simeon strangling her.]
INT—INFIRMARY
[The lights in the infirmary flicker on and off, and the computer screens go blank just as TJ is cutting into Volker.]
TJ
What happened?
BRODY
I don't know. Destiny's mainframe just had a huge power surge. We lost imaging, database, everything.
[Park runs to her computer. TJ looks at the bloody scalpel in her hand as the lights flicker.]
INT—CHAIR ROOM
[Ginn/Chloe is still in the chair, choking.]
ELI
What's happening?
RUSH
Must have been some kind of power surge.
SCOTT
Is it still transferring?
RUSH
I don't know; the mainframe is inaccessible.
INT—INFIRMARY
[Park and Brody work at their computers.]
TJ
Anything?
BRODY
No, it's crashed.
TJ
Why?
BRODY
I don't know!
INT—CHAIR ROOM
[Ginn/Chloe's choking attack subsides, and the lights stop flickering.]
SCOTT
What, did you fix it?
RUSH
No. The ship must have overcome the problem, at least partially, at any rate. There's still several systems malfunctioning.
YOUNG
Well, can you turn the chair off now?
RUSH
Yeah, but I can't be sure the transfer's been completed.
YOUNG
I don't care. Turn the chair off now.
[Rush operates the chair controls, and the head attachment swings away. Chloe slumps forward, unconscious and Scott and Eli catch her.]
INT—INFIRMARY
[TJ is still standing over Volker; Brody and Park are still at their computers.]
TJ
We don't have time! I need to finish this!
BRODY
Hang on! I think I got the ligature device back online.
PARK
The database is still down.
PERRY
Tamara.
[Perry has appeared next to TJ.]
TJ
(to Perry)
Who are you?
JAMES
What?
[James looks confused.]
PERRY
I'm Amanda Perry.
TJ
(to Perry)
Doctor Perry, how—
PERRY
No time to explain; you need to finish the surgery.
JAMES
TJ, what's wrong?
TJ
(to Perry but seemingly talking to an empty space)
You're not real.
PERRY
Listen to me. I'll help you. I have access to the entire medical database. Trust me Tamara, I can help.
TJ
(to Perry)
Okay, tell me what to do.
BECKER
Who are you talking to?
TJ
No one. I'll tell you later.
JAMES
TJ.
TJ
I'm fine! Just let me do this.
(to Perry)
Go.
[TJ operates as Perry gives her instructions.]
PERRY
All right. The first connection you need to make is to the renal vein. Attach it to the external iliac vein.
INT—CHAIR ROOM
[Rush and Young are still in the chair room. Rush is looking at the computer screen.]
YOUNG
Did it transfer?
RUSH
Yeah, I believe so. Two new programs have suddenly appeared in Destiny's memory bank. One of them, in fact, is active somewhere on the ship right now.
YOUNG
Doing what?
[Rush shakes his head.]
INT—INFIRMARY
[Perry watches as TJ operates, Park and James assisting.]
TJ
Okay, the artery's attached.
PERRY
Go ahead and unclamp it.
[The screen above the bed shows blood pumping through the artery.]
PERRY
It's pink. That's good.
[TJ smiles at Perry.]
[Later, TJ is suturing Volker's incision.]
PARK
That's it. You did it!
[TJ turns to Perry, but she is gone. Brody nods at TJ, smiling.]
INT—CHLOE'S QUARTERS
[Chloe is waking up on the bed. She has wounds on her temples where the chair connection was. Scott and Eli are there and rush to her bedside when she sits up.]
SCOTT
Chloe!
CHLOE
Yeah. I'm all right.
SCOTT
Okay. Okay.
INT—INFIRMARY
[TJ and Young are at the foot of Greer and Volker's beds.]
TJ
So far, so good. I, ah, started the stem cell infusions. Over time we'll wean him off of it as he reached a chimeric state. But hopefully his body won't reject the kidney. We'll just have to wait and see.
GREER
He won't reject it.
VOLKER
Great, no pressure.
YOUNG
(to TJ)
Hey, you did good.
BARNES
(over radio)
Colonel Young.
YOUNG
(into radio)
Yeah, go ahead.
BARNES
(over radio)
I need you in the communications lab.
INT—CORRIDOR
[Young arrives at the stone lab door and punches the button.]
INT—STONE LAB
[The door opens and Young steps in.]
YOUNG
David?
TELFORD/O'HARA
Yeah, it's me.
BARNES
We just made the connection.
TELFORD/O'HARA
We had a problem with the communication device on our end. Took a few days, but our guys finally fixed it.
YOUNG
David…
TELFORD/O'HARA
The bomb was defused. Washington is safe.
[Young nods, relieved.]
INT—BRIDGE
[Rush enters the bridge and leans on the railing.]
PERRY
Nicholas.
[Rush turns to see Perry standing next to him. He sighs, relieved.]
PERRY
It worked.
[Rush smiles and nods.]
PERRY
Thank you.
RUSH
How do you feel?
PERRY
Free.
INT—INFIRMARY
[Volker is sitting on the bed. Brody and Park are with him.]
BRODY
Have you peed yet?
VOLKER
What kind of question is that?
BRODY
Well, the, the kidneys clean the blood, they process the waste—
VOLKER
Yeah, I know what they do, for, f… Yes, I've… yes, okay?
BRODY
Good.
VOLKER
Good.
[TJ walks by.]
TJ
Hey, you need to walk. Just a little bit around the infirmary. It helps the body heal.
BRODY
Oh, ah, I, got to go. I'm on duty. I will, ah, I'll stop by later.
[Brody gives Volker a pat on the leg and walks away.]
PARK
I'll help you.
VOLKER
Are you sure?
PARK
Mm-hmm.
[Park gets his IV bag as he gets up from the bed.]
VOLKER
All right.
[TJ is checking on Greer's surgical wound.]
TJ
There might be a little infection setting in there.
GREER
I'm fine.
TJ
Yeah. No, I know. I'm just going to change the dressing.
[TJ walks away and Greer looks up at the ceiling with a somewhat worried expression.]
INT—KINO ROOM
[Eli is at the console. He turns to look at the doorway and sees Ginn.]
ELI
I was getting worried. I saw your consciousness in the memory bank, but you hadn't appeared to anyone yet, so I didn't know what to think.
GINN
I know it's only temporary.
ELI
It is.
[He gets up and goes to her.]
ELI
I promise. But for now, it's, it's the best we can do.
GINN
I thought about what you said. Just being here, seeing you, hearing your voice, it is enough.
[Ginn lifts her hand to Eli's face, but her fingers pass through his cheek. They stand there looking at each other.]
