Anderson: "Continuum" Like a Feature Film

Jack O

Stargate SG-1 star Richard Dean Anderson recently posted a note on his official website concerning his recovery from foot surgery and his return to his role as Jack O’Neill in Brad Wright’s Stargate: Continuum, the first of the stand-alone SG-1 movies being released directly to video.

Anderson closed his note with this mini-review of the movie: “Oh, and by the way, Brad sent me a copy of Continuum, and I must shout and tout the relative genius of both Mr. Wright and Mr. Wood. The darn thing looks, SOUNDS, and behaves like a feature film. I am soooo frickin’ proud of those guys. Talented and genuinely GOOD guys.”

To get a preview of Anderson’s return as Jack O’Neill, view the trailer below (this version is without the cheering fans):

The world premiere of the DVD (and Blu-ray HD) is July 29, 2008, in North America. There’s a tentative release for the UK set for sometime in August.

SGA S5 Spoilers: "The Queen"

5.08 “The Queen”

Teyla poses as Todd’s Queen to represent his hive in negotiations with an allied hive, but tension escalates as the alliance’s territories are threatened by another Wraith hive.

Details

Todd and the Expedition have once again teamed up—this time with Teyla posing as Todd’s Queen. They rendezvous with another hive, one of their alliance, that has their own queen with whom Teyla is to negotiate. The commander welcoming Todd and Teyla aboard acts as his Queen’s primary aide and shows a great deal of protection for her and her hive. He has seen betrayals happen among even his allies, so he’s very suspicous of any and all who come from a hive not his own.

The rest of Teyla’s team stays on Todd’s hive ship, accompanied by Kenny. As soon as Todd and Teyla board the other hive, the commander takes the ship into hyperspace. This act surprises Todd, who says it is not part of the arrangement, but the commander suggests that this is standard procedure when it comes to treating someone that he doesn’t know. Sheppard, Ronon, and McKay lost track of Todd and Teyla once the hive went into hyperspace. Only once the ship drops out will they be able to track Todd’s subspace transmitter.

Todd stands close to Teyla, making sure that she doesn’t cause any more suspicion in this already tense situation. The commander brings Teyla word that a rival hive has just encroached on one of their feeding grounds and wishes for Teyla to give him orders as to what to do next. Each command Teyla gives as Queen is met with mounting suspicion, and sooner or later, things are going to go bad … very bad.

SGA S5: "Whispers" Casting

Stargate Atlantis executive producer and co-showrunner Joseph Mallozzi has been keeping his readers up-to-date on the writing and production process of his Season Five episode “Whispers” in which Dr. Carson Beckett and Lt. Col. John Sheppard are surveying a planet with an all-female Stargate team. The episode is also a horror story, complete with mutants, strange dolls, gas masks, and blinding fog that interferes with flashlights and electronics.

Yesterday, Mallozzi published the names of the actors who will be portraying the new team members:

Christina Cox
The four-member all-female team is commanded by Major Anne Teldy, the character being named after one of the regular visitors to Mallozzi’s blog who won a contest the producer held there. The talk is that she was supposed to be killed by mutant space cows, but things do have a way of changing as the script moves along the production line. Teldy will be played by SG-1 veteran Christina Cox, who had starred in her own Lifetime series Blood Ties. Cox played in “Spirits” and “The Sentinel”, and now she’s making the move to Atlantis.
Leela Savasta
Our readers should already be familiar with Leela Savasta, who is in the new recurring role of Captain Alicia Vega. Her character will make her debut in Season Five’s premiere episode, “Search and Rescue”, when she joins Col. Samantha Carter on an S&R mission in the collapsed building that swallowed several members of the Expedition in Season Four’s finale, “The Last Man”.
Janina Gavankar
Sgt. “Dusty” Mehra (formerly known as “Dusty” Wells) is being played by Janina Gavankar, who played Eva ‘Papi’ Torres in The L Word. Dusty is a no-nonsense soldier who shows a teasing side in her interactions with Beckett and Dr. Alison Porter, the fourth member of the new team.
Nicole de Boer
Dr. Alison Porter will be portrayed by sci-fi veteran Nicole de Boer, known as Lt. Ezri Dax in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Sarah Bannerman in The Dead Zone. Beckett and Porter geek out on the technology left behind by Michael in one of his research facilities where the first human-iratus hybrids were being created. “Dusty” sees the mutual attraction and makes herself scarce so that the two can be alone together.

Who will survive the horror of the mission? You’ll have to wait until “Whispers” airs.

Sci Fi Pi Interviews Tapping, Bridges

The Australian website Sci Fi Pi has posted new interviews with Stargate SG-1 stars Amanda Tapping and Beau Bridges. The two interviews touch on each actor’s acting career, family life, and what it was like working on the two direct-to-DVD movies, Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum.

Amanda Tapping

Amanda Tapping as Col. Samantha Carter (SGA "Midway")

Tapping was asked if she’s heard anything more about additional movies, and she replied, “Well, nothing as yet, but we’ve been really bolstered by Ark of Truth sales, so we’re hoping that will sway the higher-ups decisions for more movies.” She also said she’d be back on board “in a heartbeat.”

With her time currently taken up by her new series Sanctuary, Tapping isn’t available to be a full-time member of the Stargate Atlantis cast. And as far as Stargate Universe, the third series pitched by Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, Tapping said, “I’ve heard about it, there have been talks about it, but I don’t know any details about it. They’re not talking to me, when they’re talking! (laughs) Everything I know – I read on the internet.”

Beau Bridges

General Hank Landry ("The Ark of Truth")

Bridges had a lot to share about his family and neighbors (including Stargate co-star Ben Browder) and how the business of acting has been a major part of his life. He’s had the opportunity to participate in many interesting projects. As for filming for Brad Wright’s Continuum, Bridges shared, “Well, I didn’t get to go up to the North Pole, but that was quite a bit of a big deal, working in the snow and ice and the submarine. It was pretty amazing, from what I heard. But on Continuum, I had fun doing that. I got to be a General Landry from a different time, that was a lot of fun, I enjoyed that.”

And does he think there will be more SG-1 movies? “Well, I think that even with these last movies, Rob and Brad always leave the door open a crack, to allow for the possibility of giving the fans more. I’ve recently been to a couple of conventions and I’m amazed at just how faithful people are to the show. I wouldn’t be surprised that after these two DVDs come out (Ark of Truth, Continuum) and if they do well, there may be some more. So even though the Ori arc was tied up, who knows what’s waiting out there in space?”
