Importance of Tax Breaks to Stargate

In an article on television and film production in Vancouver and Stargate’s longevity, Stargate executive producer Robert C. Cooper noted that the 18% tax break now given to productions in British Columbia is crucial to its continued production there:

Last year, the BC government was forced to match an 18 percent tax break offered to producers by Ontario and Quebec.

Other provinces have now followed, as well as 45 U.S. states.

Nevertheless, Stargate producer Robert Cooper says the show will stay in Vancouver.

“We’re really at that stage where the infrastructure is here so moving it would be difficult. But if the tax credit went away it would be gone.”

Now that the US Dollar is so weak against the Canadian Dollar, the benefit of producing in Canada is not as high as it was; the tax break helps make up for that.
