Stargate Legacy Auctions Launched

Stargate Legacy Auctions

“Own a piece of Stargate history!” Joseph Mallozzi announced in his weblog recently. “My co-workers Lawren [Bancroft-Wilson, production assistant] and Tanya [Balic, production coordinator] have organized an auction of props, set dec, and costumes from SG-1, Atlantis, and both SG-1 movies.

“According to Lawren, they’ll be putting up over a 100 items. Every auction starts at 0.01 and there’s no reserve so if you’ve been dying to get your hands on Zipacna’s crazy hat from Pretense, this is your chance!”

The name of the project is “Stargate Legacy Auctions”:

After thirteen years of producing the Stargate Franchise from Stargate Sg-1 to Stargate Atlantis, we’ve created some pretty amazing props, costumes and set decorations. As we prepare to launch our newest show STARGATE: UNIVERSE, along with the production of a STARGATE ATLANTIS MOVIE and a third STARGATE: SG-1 MOVIE, the production needs to do some spring cleaning. Instead of shipping off these treasures to our Area-51 like warehouse the Producers and MGM have agreed to make some items available to our loyal fans through an online auction. We will be putting items up on EBAY where anyone can bid and hopefully win some Stargate history. And we’re not talking about little items you would miss if you blinked. These are key props like Jaffa weapons, Ori Helmets, key items that whole episodes and stories were based around. We will do our best to describe the items and what episodes they appeared in. Each original production item will be accompanied with a certificate of authenticity signed by the Executive Producer/Creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper.

Good Luck Bidding,

The Stargate Legacy Team

Have fun in bidding for a piece of Stargate history!

Stargate Merchandise Ups and Downs

The Stargate franchise exists as more than simply the television shows, encompassing novels, audio books, props and replicas, action figures, and video games. Here are a few recent news snippets on the merchandise front.

[Updated with SGA Season 4 Companion Guide — see end of article.]

Stargate Props Replicas

Stargate Props Replica -- Egyptian Head

Gateworld reports the sad news that Legends Memorabilia (aka StargateProps) has decided to drop its MGM license for authentic reproductions of such props as the Stargate, a Zat, the Eye of Ra pendant, and a Staff Weapon, among others. Legends head Paul Brown reported sales have not been high enough to justify the costs of the licensing and production, which involves many hours of engineering to create the molds for each piece. So if you want one of those great props, head over now to order, before it’s too late! I have four of the products, and they are top-notch.

In happier news, Legends is continuing its work in auctioning of real Stargate items, as well as its autographs sales for charity on behalf of RDA and other Stargate actors. In fact, an auction has just started, and includes the mini-staff weapon that Mitchell used in “Babylon”. Head over to StargateProps/Legends to make your bids!

Big Finish Productions Audio Books

Big Finish continues to produce original audio fiction, read by Stargate actors and provided either by CD or download. A total of six titles have been released, three each from SG-1 and Atlantis. The works sound more like audio dramas than simply an actor reading a story, therefore they’re lots of fun! Visit the Stargate page at Big Finish for more info.

Stargate Novels

An impressive 17 original novels across SG-1 and Atlantis have been published by Fandemonium. Some are found in bookstores, and fans can visit the on-line shop at StargateNovels.com. Sadly three of the titles (Halcyon, Exogenesis, and Siren Song) are out of print. Some fans have reported seeing them for sale on E-bay and other auction sites, but at higher-than-retail prices.

Stargate Worlds On-Line Role Playing Game

The star of this year’s Comic Con, Stargate Worlds is continuing development, and it entered the crucial “closed beta” phase on October 13. This means a limited number of fans are being allowed to play the game for the purpose of testing it on a big scale. The lead developer recently granted a long interview, in which he noted:

So when the game comes out we want it to be another leg of the table for the Stargate franchise, to really hold it up and make it stronger. That’s really where they’ve really looked at it as well – Brad Wright and Robert Cooper have been very supportive, their comments and feedback has been a positive, open, collaborative effort.

The game should begin open beta testing early in 2009, with official release following hopefully not long after. The game will run only on Windows XP and Vista for now. Your intrepid editor tried to get a beta version to run on a Windows virtual machine on her Mac, but things did not go well. Certainly the official release will be easier for a newbie to install. The Stargate Worlds game represents a huge investment by MGM, and one that we hope will pay off for the good of the franchise!

David Nykl in "Zero Point" Now Available for Download

The third and final Atlantis episode in the first season of the new Big Finish Stargate series of audio dramas, “Zero Point”, is currently available for download and its CD for purchase at the production’s website. This production is written by James Swallow and directed by Sharon Gosling and features the voice of David Nykl as Dr. Radek Zelenka. “Zero Point” also features a musical score and runs for approximately 70 minutes.

Set between “Reunion” and “Midway” of Season Four, the story synopsis: “Zelenka reluctantly finds himself aboard the Starship Apollo as part of Colonel Carter’s drive to survey the area of space surrounding Atlantis’ new planet. It’s a sensible idea, he understands that – but it’s also very dull. Dull, that is, until the ship discovers an entirely new life form…”

Fans will be able to download each audio adventure in the six-episode season, along with the CD artwork, for $8.99 (USD). This episode’s CD release is priced at $18.15 + $2.74 shipping (USD) at the website. Those who buy the CD will be permitted to download the episode from the website at no extra charge.

Big Finish is planning on releasing additional titles for a second season, including “Pathogen”, which features Teryl Rothery and audio drama newcomer Christopher Judge.

Official Magazine to Publish Davis Memorial

The Official Stargate Magazine has a brief story in the current issue (#24, September/October 2008) dedicated to Don S. Davis who passed away June 29. The article provides a brief biography and editor’s note: “The Official Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing Don Davis earlier in the year and found him to be a charming and friendly man, eager to talk about his newfound lease of life, his art, and his love of acting and of Stargate. He will be sorely missed by all those who had the pleasure of meeting and working with him.”

The Magazine is planning on publishing a full memorial in the next issue and closes with the following request: “If you’d like to share your experiences of Don with us, email us at the usual address.” That’s stargate_sg1@titanemail.com.

Discover Magazine Explores "Stargate: Continuum"

Stargate: Continuum

Not too long ago, the Discover Magazine website’s blog “Science Not Fiction” explored the science of the Stargate Atlantis episode “The Seed” in an article entitled Stargate Atlantis Gets Biomechanical. Now, the science magazine is concentrating on the newly-released DTV movie Stargate: Continuum, hoping, perhaps, to explain the concepts of Time Travel in Time Travel Stargate Style and the Grandfather Paradox in Simulating The Grandfather Paradox. If these concepts give you a headache, don’t go there, but if you’re interested in finding out if the science of the movie was sound, then these articles might give you a great starting point!

Discover might publish more articles about the science of Stargate since they have tagged their blog for easy article retrieval: Stargate Continuum tag and Stargate Atlantis tag.

Stargate: Continuum‘s DVD/Blu-ray release dates (if you know of other dates, please let us know and we’ll add them to the list):

  • September 10, 2008: France

Third SG-1 Movie Filming in January?

In two of his recent interviews, Stargate star Christopher Judge has stated that if all goes well (i.e., Stargate: Continuum sells well), the third Stargate SG-1 movie, written by Brad Wright, will begin filming in January 2009.

One of the interviews is at the French AlloCiné Blogs website and is from Judge’s appearance at the Reunion Stellaire convention held June 27-29. The second is a video interview posted at Stargate: Continuum‘s page at play.com and took place in London, possibly at the time of the Chevron 7 convention held June 13-15.

In the play.com interview, the actor states, “Hopefully I’m not talking out of school here, but it’s been in the wind that we possibly may do another movie starting in January.” Pausing and laughing, Judge added, “And having said that, I may have just lost my chance to be in it!”

According to estimates given by Robert C. Cooper in an interview about the production schedule of his movie, Stargate: The Ark of Truth, and Judge’s statement that it took 15 days to film Continuum, if the third movie starts filming in January, it could possibly be ready for distribution by early 2010. Cooper stated that MGM and Fox want six months to market the product, so he had to be finished with his film in October for its March release. The Ark of Truth filmed from April 17 to around May 8, 2007, but it was the creation of the visual effects in post-production that took the greatest amount of time in the production schedule.

Judge discussed Teal’c’s growth from being “O’Neill’s straight man” to showing his inner character even if the circumstances were different in Continuum. He also touches on writing and his upcoming project, Rage of Angels, which he is developing for MGM with Brad Turner (24 and Stargate SG-1) and Michael Shanks. He warns that Rage, unlike Stargate, which he believes was successful due to its storytelling, its family-friendliness, the camaraderie of the four main characters, its sense of humor, and not taking itself too seriously, will not be something for the kids to see since his character, the Archangel Gabriel, called “the Wrath of God,” is “divined by God to basically be a serial killer.”
