Claudia Unbound

Claudia Unbound
David Bassom, Stargate SG-1 Official Magazine #04, May/Jun 05

Throughout Prometheus Unbound, viewers are left guessing as to whether Vala (played by Farscape’s Claudia Black) is a villain or a heroine. Black feels that the ambiguity that surrounds her character creates a lot of potential for Vala’s six-episode story arc at the beginning of Season Nine.

“We really don’t know yet about Vala,” she explains. “I think Daniel Jackson finds her very frustrating. I don’t think he feels he can trust her much, but he does find her intriguing and I think he respects her ability. So I think she’s going to be an interesting character to watch in Season Nine.”

Season Nine will also feature Claudia Black’s leading man from Farscape, Ben Browder, in a new regular role as a military hero who becomes involved in SG-1. Black has no doubt that her former co-star will prove to be a fine addition to Stargate SG-1.

“They are so lucky to have Ben,” she states. “I actually don’t know if they realise how lucky they are yet. Ben’s energy knows no bounds, so I think he’s going to run them ragged. He’s got the spirit and the enthusiasm as a performer of someone a third of his age.”

Many viewers have already noted the physical similarities beween Browder and longtime Stargate SG-1 star Michale Shanks, and Black is only too aware of what they’re saying. “They do look alike,” she agrees with a grin. “It certainly was weird for me to walk onto the Stargate SG-1 set and see Michael in an almost identical costume to what Ben wore on Farscape! I’m sure there will be some tongue-in-cheek comment on the show on their similarity. One of the joys of Stargate SG-1 is that there’s a lot of tongue-in-cheek humour.”

“The one thing Michael and Ben really do have in common is that they take their work as actors very seriously. I also think that their way of working is very similar; they’re both very professional and both very technically proficient. And I think they’ll be delighted to find those qualities in each other. I’m very happy they’re getting a chance to work together. I know they have met, and Michael spoke very highly of Ben, so they’ll give each other a run for their money and I know they’ll have a lot of fun together. And I’m sure the onscreen chemistry between the two of them is going to be phenomenal.”

In addition to appearing alongside Michael Shanks, Browder seems destined to appeare opposite Black in Stargate SG-1 – and that’s one reunion Black is excited by. “It will be nice to do something with Ben where I have the opportunity to be a lot more playful,” she notes. “Our characters could even hate each other! That would be fun.”

As excited as she is about what the future holds for Shanks and Browder, Claudia Black is even more thrilled about what Stargate SG-1’s ninth season has in store for Vala. She has relished her Stargate SG-1 experience to date, and feels that Vala could captivate viewers like never before during the coming year.

“I do believe Vala is an interesting character and there’s room for her to grow,” she declares. “There are just lots of possibilities for the character, and I think she’s going to be fun to watch. I know the show’s producers were very clear about her back-story and where she came from but not all of that was revealed in Prometheus Unbound, so I think there’s a lot of scope for her in Season Nine.”

S9 Spoilers: Carter Returns & Episode Order

Lt. Col. Samantha Carter returns in Season Nine's More shuffling is predicted before it is all said and done!

In a recent post on the Gateworld Forum, Joseph Mallozzi stated that Carter will return in the episode, “Beachhead”. Since we know that Carter will be in “Ex Deus Machina” playing opposite NID Agent Malcolm Barrett, and since we know that Vala is only around when Carter isn’t and is doing six episodes, we’re going to assume that “Beachhead” is the seventh episode and “Ex Deus Machina” follows.

Filming schedules are not always the best way to tell the order that episodes will air. A few prime examples of this are from Season Six where “Frozen” was filmed after “Abyss” and “Full Circle” before “Prophecy”! Also, Season Five’s “Revelations” was filmed before “Meridian” and Season Seven’s “Fragile Balance” before “Fallen”.

Some of the episodes which are listed in our Season Nine Episode Guide page will move around as we discover their rightful places in the airing schedules.

So, here’s a revised episode order for Season Nine. It’s not written in stone (except for the opener and the mid-season two-parter!), but is only a guess based off of various assumptions from spoilers, producers’ comments, writers’ comments, and actors’ comments:

-9.01 “Avalon Part 1”
-9.02 “Avalon Part 2”
-9.03 “Origin” (Part 3)
-9.04 “The Ties That Bind”
-9.05 “The Powers That Be”
-9.06 “The Order”
-9.07 “Beachhead”
-9.08 “Ex Deus Machina”
-9.09 “Babylon”
-9.10 “The Fourth Horseman Part 1”
-9.11 “The Fourth Horseman Part 2”
-9.12 “Collateral Damage”

S9 Spoilers: Dr. Lee in Season Nine

Dr. Bill Lee in Season Eight's “It is great to discover the comedy in this life and death scenario.”

Many might agree that Dr. Bill Lee, portrayed by Bill Dow, adds something of the comedic relief during intense situations encountered by Stargate Command on a daily basis. For Bill Dow, these times are welcomed opportunities to test his range as an actor. “I love the serious and scientific, the odd action sequence (Evolution), but it is great to discover the comedy in this life and death scenario,” Bill recently posted on his “Galaxy of Stars” message board. Bill enjoyed the focus given to Dr. Lee in episodes such as “Avatar” and “Zero Hour” in Season Eight, but the shooting of Season Seven‘s “Evolution” was the most fun for him. “I got to do some stunt man stuff and hang out with Dr. Jackson – great stuff.”

Dr. Lee is an expert in alien technology, but his interests expand into anything brought back by the SG teams from off-world. He was introduced in Season Four‘s “Prodigy” where he was stationed at a research facility on a moon of a gas giant. He’s also been off-world to study the technology left behind by the never-seen Furlings in Season Six‘s “Paradise Lost”. It was on that mission that Dr. Lee challenged Maj. Carter’s authority when attempting to find out what happened to Jack and Harry when they were transported to the moon of the planet. Since these excursions, Dr. Lee has stayed Earth-side. Bill adds, “I guess there’s enough havoc out there in the universe without unleashing my genuine, although sometimes misapplied curiosity. I keep asking whenever I get the chance, ‘Can I come?’ (watch for it this season) but so far…nope.”

Fans of Dr. Lee will be delighted to know that he will be appearing in four of the first six episodes filmed for Season Nine. He didn’t name these episodes because they often film them out of sequence. The hints he provided, however, lead to the conclusion that they are “Avalon Part 1”; “Avalon Part 2”; “Origin”, where he works with Dr. Carolyn Lam to release Daniel and Vala from coma-inducing alien technology; and “The Ties That Bind”, where he’ll be “trying to assist Dr. Jackson with a rather sticky problem – not altogether successfully – you’ll see.”

Bill said that he’ll be taking two episodes off and then he is “confident that I will be in more this season.”

S9 Spoilers: “Ex Deus Machina”

Ba'al in Season Eight's Ba’al is up to no good — again!

The last time we saw Ba’al, he was lowering his head, seemingly in defeat, as Anubis announced his “grand design” for the galaxy which included Ba’al’s being aware of his own death at the hands of Anubis (8.18 “Threads”). Before that, he was laughing as he escaped from the Rebel Jaffa who had boarded his ship over Dakara (8.17 “Reckoning Part 2”).

We recently reported that it was uncertain whether or not Ba’al’s face would be seen, but now we can be certain that he will be because Cliff Simon, the actor who brings Ba’al to life, has posted in his message board that he was filming his first episode in Season Nine, “Ex Deus Machina”. He says that it will be a “great episode” and that we shouldn’t miss it!

Hopefully, by reading between the lines, Ba’al survives the episode and we’ll get to see what he’ll be doing next to stir things up after the major defeat of the System Lords.

S9 Spoilers: “Babylon”

9.08 or 9.09 “Babylon”

Episode Summary

Gravely wounded in a battle with the Sodan warrior Volnek, Mitchell is taken captive by the Sodan and nursed back to health in order to prepare him for a fight to the death as atonement for spilling Sodan blood.

Spoiler Snippets

SG-1 goes to the planet of Sodan, home of a great Jaffa warrior race who sought Kheb, but found their planet instead. The Sodan warriors are descendants of those Jaffa who opposed the Goa’uld Ishkur 5,000 years ago. When Ishkur learned of their insubordination, he ordered their deaths as traitors, but they fled instead. They set out to find Kheb, hoping their souls would finally know peace, but their search led them to the world on which they now inhabit.

The Sodan see the Ancients, whom they call the Shen’asai, as the true gods. The Sodan Jaffa follow the Path of the Shen’asai. They have successfully hidden themselves away from the universe, free to pursue the path of wisdom and the nature of the true god without interference from the outside. SG-1 attempts to warn them about the Orii, but one of their leaders, Lord Haikon, has already accepted them as saviors.

Three Sodan are introduced in this episode:

Lord Haikon – He is a formidable Sodan leader who has held his position for over 100 years. During all of those years, Haikon meditated on the nature of the true god, but his fanaticism has caused him to become blind to reality and the needs of his people. He ignores Mitchell’s warnings about the Orii and bows down to them as the deities he has been searching for all of his life. Unfortunately, his gullibility sets his people up for disaster.

Volnek – He engages Mitchell in a fierce battle which leaves them both seriously wounded. SG-1, without Mitchell, takes him captive and saves his life by putting him on Tretonin. At first Volnek is hostile about being placed on Tretonin and about what Daniel and Teal’c are telling him about the Orii. Eventually he realizes that Daniel and Teal’c have his best interests at heart and he eventually comes to admire them. Daniel and Teal’c seek help in freeing Mitchell from the Kel Shak Lo (the fight to the death) and helping the Sodan overcome the Orii oppressors.

Jolan – He is Volnek’s brother who reluctantly nurses Mitchell back to health from his fight with Volnek. He trains Mitchell in Sodan warfare and grows to see him as a kindred spirit and a wise counselor. Jolan is the intended opponent for the fight to the death, but he engages in a cunning ruse to spare Mitchell’s life and then organize a splinter group of disgruntled Sodan to do battle with the Orii oppressors.

Action locations include the planet Sodan and the SGC.

There are no mentions of Carter or Vala for this episode thus far.

S9 Spoilers: Recurring Characters

Keeping the ties to the past eight years

Season Nine will see a lot of changes for the SGC and SG-1, but that doesn’t mean that we’ll have to get used to new characters as if starting from scratch. The stories starting out the season link to the past eight years with a host of recurring characters who shared SG-1’s adventures throughout the war against the Goa’uld, the fight for the Jaffa’s freedom, and the war against the Replicators.

Starting the season is the premiere entitled “Avalon Part 1”. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) and Teal’c (Christopher Judge) will be there to link the old and the new. We’ll be introduced to new regular characters Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell (Ben Browder) and Maj. Gen. Hank Landry (Beau Bridges). Even with such high-profile new leads, be assured that Sgt. Walter Harriman (Gary Jones) will be manning the control systems and announcing incoming travelers and chevron locks. And, along the way, Vala (Claudia Black, introduced in “Prometheus Unbound”) makes her reappearance and stays for up to six episodes to provide the female’s touch to an all-male newly-formed SG-1 (Mitchell, Daniel, and Teal’c).

Speaking of the female touch, we’ll also be introduced to Dr. Carolyn Lam (Lexa Doig) who is not only the Chief Medical Officer of the SGC, but also Gen. Landry’s daughter and a possible past love interest of Mitchell’s.

Additional beloved recurring characters, according to spoilers and Joe Mallozzi on his “Ask Joe Mallozzi” thread on the GateWorld forum, include Master Bra’tac (Tony Amendola) and Rak’nor (Obi Ndefo). These two Jaffa are joined by the new recurring character and one of the Free Jaffa Nation leaders, Gerak, played by Louis Gossett, Jr.

Dr. Bill Lee (Bill Dow) will also return in Season Nine. His presence is certain in the third episode, “Origin”, as he works to save Daniel and Vala from the grips of alien technology.

Ba’al (Cliff Simon) is mentioned in some of the spoilers, but we don’t know yet if we’ll see his face, in the episode, “Ex Deus Machina”. The mere fact that he is mentioned at all should prove that the Goa’uld are still around and causing problems, even after the major defeat of the System Lords during Season Eight. Looking for Ba’al on Earth will be the recurring character of NID Agent Malcolm Barrett, played by Peter Flemming.

And, if casting plans go as intended, we’ll see the Ascended Being Orlin once more (from Season Five’s “Ascension”). He is supposed to return in the mid-season two-parter, “The Fourth Horseman”, played by Sean Patrick Flanery. If Flanery is not available, however, the story will be written for another Ascended.

Andy Mikita, director, mentioned on his “Galaxy of Stars” forum that Dan Shea will return as Sgt. “Sly” Siler in Season Nine, but no specific episodes were mentioned. Dan Shea is also the program’s stunt coordinator.

And, last, but certainly not least, fans of Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) and Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) will see those characters making appearances during the new season. Jack will appear in at least two episodes (the season premiere, “Avalon Part 1”, and the third episode, “Origin”), while Carter will return to the SGC in the seventh episode (“Ex Deus Machina”) and stay until the close of the season. It was intended that Vala fill in for Carter during her absence, but some convention rumors have it that they want Vala to return to the show for more episodes, even while Carter is there.

Watch this blog and our Season Nine Episode Guide for details about the new season which is slated to premiere on the SciFi Channel at 8PM Eastern on July 15, 2005.

S9 Spoilers: “Ex Deus Machina”

9.07 or 9.08 “Ex Deus Machina”

Episode Summary

When interstellar criminal Ba’al is found to be hiding out on Earth, the search for his whereabouts badly strains the alliance between the Tau’ri and the Jaffa.

Spoiler Snippets

Carter is back at the SGC and has teamed up with Daniel to investigate the disappearances of top executives of the company Sentinel Media Enterprises. They disappeared about the same time as Osiris’ ship was destroyed (8.14 “Full Alert”). That ship was under the control of members of The Trust who had been implanted with Goa’uld symbiotes and attempted to destroy Earth by causing a nuclear war. The fear is now there are several Goa’uld on Earth gaining strength after another executive disappears only a few days ago.

It is also revealed that a Jaffa was found on Earth who had been in the service of Lord Yu. This Jaffa had been sent by Gerak, one of the leaders of the Free Jaffa Nation, to find Ba’al! It seems that Ba’al fled to Earth when he was defeated in the battle for Dakara (8.17 “Reckoning Part 2” and 8.18 “Threads”). Ba’al could have been on Earth for as long as nine months!

Gerak is strongly opposed to any alliance with the Tau’ri and the Tok’ra, whom he views just as bad as the Goa’uld. There are other members of the Jaffa High Council who do not agree with Gerak, including a Jaffa named Tebrash. Gerak sent the Jaffa to track down Ba’al in secret, completely ignoring the alliance that they had with the Tau’ri in the war for the Jaffa’s freedom. Gerak also calls Teal’c’s loyalty into question.

It appears that either the Prometheus or the Daedalus is preventing the Jaffa from entering into Earth’s space to continue their pursuit of Ba’al (which Gerak was doing in secret).

Action locations include Dakara and Earth.

S9 Spoilers: Daniel, Vala, and the Ancients

More information is revealed about Daniel’s and Vala’s condition in “Origin”

April Telek announced on her Bboard at “Galaxy of Stars” that she will begin shooting her role as an Ancient named Sallis this coming week. The episode scheduled to be filmed next week is “Origin” (on/about April 4-16).

We announced earlier that Telek was slated to play Sallis in two upcoming Season Nine episodes based on the guest lists for Stargate SG-1 episodes listed on the IMDB website. The two episodes are most likely “Avalon Part 2” and “Origin”. According to her recent announcement, Telek is also slated to return as Sallis in an episode named “The Order”. No further information is available for that episode at this time.

According to Telek’s announcement, “She is an Ancient, and married to Harrid (played by the extremely talented Steve Park), and without warning, their bodies are taken over by Vala and Daniel. Because there is no back story established for Harrid and Sallis, and because Steve and I have basically just had to “mirror” Michael and Claudia thus far, I can’t tell you much more at this point.”

Telek is enthusiastic about filming for Stargate SG-1 and closed her announcement with this “P.S.”: “Regarding the costumes and set…BEAUTIFUL!! They truly are a work of art! I wear a long, very low cut, middle ages style frock, that’s got a boned bodice and laces up the back corset style! It’s heavy (it probably weighs 10-15 lbs) but it makes me feel like I’m definately from “another world”. The sets…to die for, and the cast, EVEN LOVELIER THAN YOU COULD IMAGINE!!”

S9 Spoilers: “The Powers That Be”

9.05 or 9.06 “The Powers That Be”

Episode Summary

Vala returns to a planet where she was once worshipped as a god, only to face both the Priors of the Orii and a destructive plague.

Spoiler Snippets

SG-1 and Vala visit the backwater planet designated P8X-412, and meet a village leader named Azdak who is not aware that the Goa’uld System Lords have been defeated. He still believes that Vala (Claudia Black) is still a powerful god, and, once Vala reveals the truth of her history of deception and exploitation, he initiates a trial to condemn her of her crimes.

Daniel, Teal’c, and Mitchell sit with Vala in the Mal Doran, a trial in which the charges are brought before the people who hear both sides of the argument and then vote on the disposition of the accused. While Teal’c and Mitchell are present to lend their support, Daniel stands and speaks on Vala’s behalf.

Vala confessed that she was once the host to the Goa’uld Qetesh. SG-1 explains to the villagers about the parasitic nature of the Goa’uld. When Azdak begins his reading of the charges to which Vala had basically confessed, Daniel reminded him that those crimes were done by Qetesh, not Vala. Daniel said that she should only be sentenced for the crimes she committed once the Goa’uld symbiote had been removed. That was four years ago. Unfortunately, Vala still took advantage of these people after she was no longer a host. The charges against Vala are reduced to planet-wide forced labor. She deceived the people in order to gain access to their naquadah, gold, food, wine, weapons, and clothes, among other things.

The proceedings are stopped when a plague sweeps through the village and Azdak dies, only to be brought back to life by a Prior of the Orii. Other villagers are also healed by the Prior, including one named Vachna, but Vachna turns ill once more.

During the time of their stay on the planet, Daniel tries to figure out why the Orii are asking to be worshipped. The Ascended Beings that he knows don’t care and consider humans so far beneath them that they are insignificant, just like bugs are to humans. The Orii’s need to be worshipped and their do-or-die doctrine go against what he knows about Ascended Beings.

Vala and SG-1 came to the planet to warn the people of the threat the Priors pose. They know that the Priors are bad, but the people seem to accept them as good. The villagers are divided in the decision as to whether or not they will devote themselves to the Orii. Will the Priors eventually show their true nature or will millions of former Goa’uld slaves just switch their devotion from one false god to another?

S9 Spoilers: “Origin”

9.03 “Origin”

Episode Summary

When the SGC and SG-1 simultaneously encounter missionaries for some fiery gods known as the Orii, they learn that these highly evolved humans have zero tolerance for any disbelievers.

Spoiler Snippets

“Origin” is the religious dogma preached by the Priors, missionaries of the Orii, “fiery gods” from a distant galaxy. They have been given the knowledge that our galaxy has not been “enlightened” and have come to convert us or destroy us.

Daniel and Vala have been rendered unconscious by an alien device and all the efforts of Dr. Carolyn Lam (Lexa Doig) and Dr. Bill Lee (Bill Dow) have been for naught. As they attempt to find the medical and technical answers to save them, Mitchell, Dr. Lindsay, and SG-12 encounter a Prior on the planet P3X-421 who is preaching in a tent. The Prior has shown command of nature, making vegetables grow in less than an hour before the SGC personnel’s very eyes. Mitchell recruits the Prior to return to the SGC with him with the hope that he will release Daniel and Vala from the grips of the device. The Prior takes the invitation, but once seeing that the device will not release them, simply states, “It is the will of the Orii.”

The Orii are ascended beings who collect themselves in a wall of fire. Individual Orii take temporary possession of a host, a Doci, a human spiritual leader. Daniel’s mind is linked so that he experiences a face-to-face confrontation with a Doci and an Orii on the planet Celestis in a distant galaxy. The message is clear: turn to “Origin”, or be reduced to dust. As his confrontation progresses, his body experiences extreme stress, adding to Dr. Lam’s consternation.

Meanwhile, Gerak, former First Prime of the Goa’uld Atum, has been invited to the SGC to meet with Gen. Landry (Beau Bridges) and Teal’c. Accompanying Gerak (Louis Gossett, Jr.) is Vat’yir, another Jaffa formerly of Atum’s ranks, and an escort of six additional Jaffa. Gerak ceremoniously comes down the ramp, his path flanked by the six Jaffa. Teal’c is not amused.

Gerak has taken a role in leading the Free Jaffa Nation, but Landry and Teal’c realize his goals do not mesh with theirs. Landry attempts to persuade Gerak that they must continue to work together or all that they have worked for will deteriorate into chaos.
