Firesky Announces ‘Stargate: Resistance’ PC Game

Stargate-Resistance-2

Firesky, the publisher for Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment’s troubled Stargate Worlds MMORPG, have announced their new Stargate product, Stargate: Resistance, at the game’s new homepage.

Here’s the announcement from Chris Klug, Creative Consultant:

Hello to our fans, and a special hello to any of you I’ve had the pleasure of chatting with one-on-one during the past couple years. I’m glad to be back online! I’m sure it comes as no surprise to you that here at Firesky the last year has been a little rough. The fact I’m here talking to you should tell you there’s a happy ending in sight.

We’ve come through it all with as much excitement and passion for the Stargate franchise as ever (Stargate: Universe, anyone?) and, as you can see from this new website, for now we’re focusing our efforts on an exciting new game for you Stargate fans, Stargate:Resistance. Combining the talents of all our developers, this 3rd-person action title pits teams of Stargate Command personnel against the System Lords and their minions in exhilarating real-time online battles. This new title is the fruit of what we’ve all worked on in the last few months.

The game focuses on three really exciting elements: fluid team-centric play (the classes support one another), fast-paced real-time combat, and wonderful maps designed specifically to bring these two sides into conflict through dynamic hand-to-hand and ranged combat.

Resistance brings to our fans the kind of gameplay SGW never planned to deliver. Resistance delivers the combat, weapons and tactics seen so often on the show that many of you have been asking for. I know this game will excite fans who have longed to go toe-to-toe with a Jaffa as well as those who always wanted to dominate the galaxy in ways the MMO could only hint at, and I’m proud to have been part of this team and prouder still that Firesky is bringing this product to you. Everyone working hard on this title is equally proud, and well they should be.

As well as building this new exciting product, paramount to Firesky’s long-term future is restoring your confidence and trust in us. While we’ve never lied to you about our circumstances, many times we were silent while our critics had their fun at our expense. We chose to remain quiet during those times, because, honestly, we often didn’t know what our future was day-to-day, sometimes even hour-to-hour. As a group we chose to not say anything until we knew something.

Moving forward, think of our relationship as one we need to re-build; imagine this conversation is the first one we have over a cup of coffee in Starbucks where I ask you to give us a chance to restore what we had and enjoyed together.

Continue to stick with us. I know you’ll enjoy the fast-paced action Resistance has in store for you while we continue to work towards SGW’s release.

Chris

SGU This Week: “Justice”

SGU Justice (MGM)
Their own system of “Justice” (image from MGM)

“One of our characters becomes the prime suspect in a crime,” writer Alan McCullough told the Official Magazine (pdf file), “and, for lack of any other way to proceed, is put on trial. Our characters are forced to develop their own system of justice in order to determine if this individual is innocent or guilty. The episode then takes a sharp turn, which I don’t think anyone will see coming, and ends on an unbelievable cliffhanger.”

Mid-season cliffhangers are a staple in the Stargate franchise, and “Justice”, episode 10, continues the tradition. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait several months to find out how it resolves when Stargate Universe returns to Syfy during the second quarter of 2010 with the follow-up episode “Space”.

Making the wait worse is this description from creative consultant Joseph Mallozzi: “Will Waring is doing the honors here, directing an episode that promises more than a few surprises in addition to decisions both startling and unsettling that will have far-reaching consequences for the Destiny crew.” This can’t be good…

“Justice” will be shown tonight, December 4, on the Syfy Channel (US) and Space (Canada) at 9 PM ET and 10 PM ET, respectively. The episode will be broadcast by Sky One (UK) on Tuesday, December 8, at 8 PM, and finally, on Friday, December 11, on the Sci Fi Channel (Australia) at 8:30 PM.

After viewing, you’re invited to return to the site to vote in the episode poll on the main page and discuss the episode here (in the comments), in our on-site forum, or at our LiveJournal Companion.

Guides to the Season One episodes can be found in our Stargate Wiki. And don’t forget the episode chatter that’s bound to take place from the actors, writers, producers, and the press that you can read from our Stargate Twitter Superfeed.

SGU This Week: Show Returns December 4

A beautiful image from our Destiny Glamor Gallery (image by Colls)

Syfy is taking the Thanksgiving weekend off as far as new episodes of Stargate Universe are concerned. They’ll be back on December 4 with “Justice”, but in the meantime, MGM is featuring their collection of webisodes entitled SGU: Beyond the Episodes and we’re doing the same. Visit our Kino Webisodes: Season One article for a summary of the webisodes that accompany the episodes aired thus far.

Last Week’s “Life” Ratings

TV By The Numbers has presented a table of all of the show’s ratings to-date, including those for “Life” from last week. According to this table, “Life” had 1.891 million viewers (Live+SD), up from the previous week’s viewership of 1.802 million.

Of most interest to the execs at Syfy are the numbers in the key demographic of 18-49. As observed by TV By The Numbers, SGU has retained “almost 90% of the 18-49 rating” from its premiere. This should bode well for a renewal, but there are still several other factors to consider before we create a Season Two episode guide in our Stargate Wiki. Even so, creative consultant Joseph Mallozzi gave Solutions the “exclusive” that the writers will be returning to the production office the week of December 14 to continue working on more episode ideas. They’ve already outlined the first five episodes and have even planned which one will film first once the cast and crew return to the sets in March following the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Their confidence in a renewal appears to be very high.

SGU: Beyond the Episodes with Kino Webisodes

There were thirty webisodes prepared for the first season of Stargate Universe. The special unit that was created for recording these episodes was helmed by Ivon Bartok, known for his extra features that have been included on DVD and Blu-ray releases for Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.

According to creative consultant Joseph Mallozzi, who had his hand in writing several of these webisodes, “Some kino scenes will be episode-specific while others will be more general. They’re added material so, no, you don’t have to watch them to follow what’s going on in the show – however, they do offer insight into ship life and certain characters that someone who only watches the episodes won’t be privy to.”

Thus far, MGM has released 20 of these webisodes both on their main website and at their YouTube Stargate Central channel. Solutions has gathered their descriptions and links together for your convenience in the new wiki article Kino Webisodes: Season One. The article also provides background information to tie these webisodes into the events shown in the television episodes.

Ivon Bartok recently tweeted that there were 30 webisodes associated with the first 10 episodes of Season One and that they should have been included in the SGU 1.0 DVD release that’s coming out on February 9, 2010, in Region 1. However, from the 3-disc set’s preliminary content list, it appears that not all have been included. Bartok stated that “all my stuff is on the blu-ray version,” which has just been announced and does indeed include much more material (see TV Shows on DVD for complete descriptions).

This is the first time that a Stargate show has been released as a half-season set. Some Twitter buzz had it that it’s a consolation for both the interrupted season (SGU will return in April 2010 on Syfy with the last ten episodes of the season) and for those who need to catch up.

In the meantime, we still have one more episode before the break: “Justice”, episode 10, will be shown on Friday, December 4, at 9 PM ET on Syfy.

ETA: TV Shows on DVD has updated their release announcement to include the Blu-ray version and this version contains much more material in its 2-disc set. Make sure to visit TV Shows on DVD for all the details!

Joe Mallozzi: Writers Will Meet Week of 14 December

A couple of days ago, Stargate writer/producer Joe Mallozzi claimed we (as in Solutions) had started a rumor the writers would be meeting during the week of December 14 to break (lay out basic plots for) more episodes of Season 2 of Stargate Universe.  He claimed he planned to show up to work just because of our rumor. We think this was Joe being “humorous”. In fact, we started no such rumor and let Joe know!

Joe responded with this on 20 November:

Hey, Michelle – Yep, consider it a Solutions exclusive.  We’ll back the week of December 14th to discuss more stories.

One may wonder why this is newsworthy. After all, don’t the Stargate writers always break stories before the new year, to be ready for production to start in February or March? Is Joe actually hinting that they’re more sure there will be a Season 2 of SGU? We can only speculate! Ratings on Syfy are holding steady, with around 2.5 million total weekly viewers, including those who watch on their DVRs within 7 days. The numbers for the coveted young demographic (18-34 yrs old) are reportedly higher than they were for SGA. On the other hand, MGM is in dire financial straights and may be sold off in pieces early in 2010. So it’s not a slam dunk by any means.

Perhaps Joe just wants fans to know he’ll be in the office that week and thus able to pick up all the holiday gifts we’re encouraged to send his way. Regardless, you heard it here second!

SGU This Week: “Life”

SGU-Life-MGM-01
Camile Wray during a more quiet moment in “Life”

“I was immediately attracted to this story,” writer Carl Binder told the Official Magazine (pdf file), “because it’s all about Ming-Na’s character, who is the IOA member on board the ship who, prior to this, has projected this tough exterior and been very by-the-book. We thought it would be interesting to put her into a situation where she could completely fall apart and you get to see a vulnerable side to her. We also discover some things about Lt. Scott’s past in ‘Life,’ as well.”

We’ll make these discoveries about the two characters via the body-swapping technology of the communication stones. You’ll meet the mysterious Sharon that Camile Wray spoke about in her “message in a bottle” from “Light”: “If, um…if anyone finds this within the next…I don’t know, forty years. Tell Sharon…my last thoughts were of her.” And, for Lt. Scott, you’ll find out more about Annie, someone Scott barely knows but holds a life-altering secret.

While these two are visiting Earth via the stones, TV Guide says, “On the Destiny, the crew explores new sections of the ship, which yields the discovery of a promising Ancient device.”

“Life” will be shown tonight, November 20, on the Syfy Channel (US) and Space (Canada) at 9 PM ET and 10 PM ET, respectively. The episode will be broadcast by Sky One (UK) on Tuesday, November 24, at 8 PM, and finally, on Friday, November 27, on the Sci Fi Channel (Australia) at 8:30 PM.

Last Week’s “Time” Ratings

SGU-Time-MGM-21

Last week’s episode “Time” had 1.802 million viewers, according to TV By The Numbers, up from last week’s series low numbers of 1.626 million. (These are the “Live Plus Same Day” ratings.)

Creative consultant Joe Mallozzi mentioned that official word hasn’t been given yet on a season two, but just in case, the writers are busy outlining the first few episodes. There are several steps an episode takes before it ever gets filmed, so here’s just a quick rundown of the terms used by Mallozzi in relating what’s happening in the production office among the staff writers:

Pitch – An idea gets “pitched” out to the writers.
Spin – Everyone “spins” the pitch into a workable idea.
Break – As with SG-1 and SGA before it, SGU episodes include a teaser and five acts. The writers then “break” their ideas down into these acts in order to get the story’s “major dramatic beats.”
Beat Sheet – The story broken down into its teaser and five acts.
Outline – Working from the beat sheet, the writer creates a “blueprint” of the story: the outline. This is the scene-by-scene breakdown of the episode. The writers hand in their outlines for peer review and receive notes.
Script – Once an outline gets approved, the writer finally pens the script. Page count is important, since that gives them an idea of how long the “script is running” for filming. Each Stargate series had their own page formatting details, so the page counts are different among them, but with SGU, the average script runs around 50 pages, which translates into the approximate 44 minutes of screen time. There may be several iterations of reviews and rewrites before the script is ever taken before the cameras.

For more information about the writing process, visit Joseph Mallozzi’s Production Diary and his current weblog.
