MGM and Sci Fi in Tussle Over Fate of SG-1?

A new article in Multi-Channel news has a couple of interesting quotes:

Stern added that under terms of its contract, the network’s decision to cancel the series prohibits MGM from making any new episodes of the show to air on U.S. television.

He noted, “If MGM came to us for less,” Sci Fi would be interested in more Stargate SG-1 fare, whether in the form of episodes, movies or miniseries. He would not disclose the network’s license fee to MGM.

So it seems Sci Fi’s position is that new episodes of SG-1 can’t be shown on other US networks but that they’d be willing to keep hosting it for a lower license fee. It leads one to wonder whether this is hardball negotiating playing out in the media and behind closed doors.

The article had more positive statements from MGM:

“We don’t look at Stargate SG-1 as a TV show, but a franchise. It is our intention to vigorously find a find way to extend the franchise,” said spokesman Jeff Pryor, who noted that MGM was evaluating other potential distribution outlets. “We want to move forward, but no negotiations have taken place” at this time, he added.

Fans should be hopeful that the show will live on in some form… but don’t forget to make known your passion for the show รขโ‚ฌโ€ SaveStargateSG1.com.

  1. hmmm perhaps there may be no more episodes of SG1 allowed to air,but perhaps we could see Stargate Command?A completely new series with the same characters and plotlines?A loophole perhaps?Hopefull thinking i know but heres…eh hoping ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. I just read an article posted on the SDJ website that indicated that the Stargate franchise may continue as a companion to Atlantis on Friday nights possibly in February. One of the forms may as “stargate Command”. Need some feed back on what you think this means. Will this be the same Stargate show just under new title and new conditions (surroundings) and will it have the same cast or are they talking about a whole new show with different cast members which would not work for me at all.

  3. Probably a whole new cast….the original cast each cast memeber makes millions a season.

  4. That piece on SDJ was just including speculation concerning “Stargate Command”.

What I got from the Province article was that they want to be producing *something* along with Atlantis in order to share the production costs. I’ve read in other interviews/magazine articles where they say they share the same sets between the two shows — like the Medieval Village and the Cave — in order to reduce production costs and just redress them to make them look unique.

I don’t think I’d like a “Stargate Command” series. It sounds too military to me and like they’d get rid of the non-military members of the show. It also sounds like they’d diminish SG-1’s role in the storylines. I don’t think a spin-off can survive without some carry-over of SG-1 characters, and I get the impression from MGM that they wish to use SG-1 characters in one way or another. It might be that they send some to Atlantis, as what has also been hinted, but we’re not given the details of what that means — fulltime or parttime.

I think that RCC is so involved with the Ori storyline that he’d want to continue it in some fashion — I don’t think they’d be able to convincingly wrap up that storyline in the last few episodes of S10. I’d rather see a new Stargate show, but led by Daniel Jackson. I don’t know if that will ever happen, though.

  5. In reading the SDJ article again I couldn’t help but wonder why SciFi is so adamant in not letting SG1 be continued on another network. MGM holds the franchise but Scifi has a contract. If Scifi feels that Stargate is no longer a viable series for them why not let it go and let the show continue. Obviously there is a strong following for this show to continue – directors of the show, writers of the show, producers, cast members, all the other people who work on the show in various forms and of course not to mention the 2 million or more fans who want the show to continue. What does Scifi fear in letting this show continue and be shown in the US? Is it that perhaps it would draw viewers from the Scifi channel? If that be the case, then why not go renew the show itself?

  6. As far as SciFi being adamant, it’s all down to money. They want to show repeats for years to come and don’t want the product diluted by having new episodes on some other network. Also since Atlantis is continuing, SciFi probably doesn’t want a competing show in the same universe on another network. But I bet all this could be overcome with enough of a cash offer…

  7. i tend to agree with the coment that Sci Fi are tryin to play hardball, they know the huge fan base the SG1 has and how much the characters and shows, (SG1/Atlantis) are loved. With Sci Fi not being one of the biggest Channels around their Evil Darth vader, Anubis, like Head, whoever he/she is, is truely Evil if they merely hope to reduce licencing fees by making the fan base panic in this way.
