As reported by Gateworld, MGM and newly formed Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment have entered into a deal to produce a massively multi-player online role-playing game (“MMO-RPG”) based on Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. The game will be played over the internet with many other people (similarly to World of Warcraft) and will feature ranged combat, alliances, and enemies based on the show. There is no mention that any of the regular characters from either show will be included.

It is not clear if this news is related to the demise of MGM’s licensing of the first-person video game nearly completed by Perception Ltd, called Stargate: Alliance.
As a fan, I’m doubtful about this development. I am not a video game player, but I was ready to buy an X-Box and the Stargate: Alliance video game because it was going to feature the SG-1 characters and the voices of the actors. If this is an endless quest-based game on-line that has no relation to any particular SG-1 characters, I won’t be playing it. I imagine many in my ‘female demographic’ will feel the same way. I hope I’m wrong, but it doesn’t sound good to me.
I too was looking forward to the game, I haven’t played in quite a while, but I still love games and wanted one where I would actually know the story. This online thing would take considerable amounts of attention, it’d be like having one of those gigapets again, you have to constantly be watching and doing stuff with it. I don’t have that kind of time and still go to all of my classes and have a life. Female fans need to be appreciated, and MGM can’t lump all Stargate fans into one category of Star Wars/Star Trek gamers who have the time and money to devote their lives to these online games. This sucks 😛
