Women of Sci-Fi Calendar Shipping!

After a delay as the calendar was switched from 2006 to 2007, the Women of Sci-fi Calendar and Behind the Scenes DVD are shipping! I ordered my set only last week and received them today. Here are a few first impressions…

Women of Sci-Fi DVD logo

The calendar is beautiful! It’s bigger than I expected, 11 inches wide by 19 long, almost all picture, and nicely glossy. The pictures are tasteful and focused mostly on the actress’ face rather than her ‘other’ assets. The calendar would be quite appropriate for an office setting, in my opinion. Some of the photos are Sci-fi oriented, while others aren’t. There’s one of Teryl Rothery in a very cute cowboy outfit. :)The calendar spans December 2006 through January 2008, 14 months in all, and each of the seven actresses has two ‘months’ all her own.

Lexa Doig photo shoot

The Behind the Scenes DVD, filmed and nicely produced by Ivon Bartok, is a lot of fun. Forty-five minutes in total, there is a chapter for each actress, nicely scored with rock music. Each chapter has an interview with the actress talking about her experience with the shoot and with acting in science fiction in general. All of the actresses had nothing but praise for Chris’ work, even if they don’t usually enjoy still-photo shoots. Interspersed with each interview were thoughts from Chris on working with that actress, and scenes of her shoot, including nice stills that didn’t make the calendar.

Chris Judge and his lens

The scenes from the shoot show there were quite a few people involved and some quite intricate lighting and sets. The only disappointment on the DVD is that Michael Shanks isn’t on it, but as he’s said in interviews, his money is evident all through it. 🙂

So don’t delay! Visit Women of Sci-Fi.com and order your copy today! The more we buy, the more likely it is we’ll have a Men of Sci-Fi calendar, featuring Michael, Chris, and their friends, sooner rather than later.

Free Comic Book Day Saturday

Saturday, May 6 is Free Comic Book Day in the US. Earlier announcements about the day have featured promises of giveaways of special edition Jack O’Neill action figures, but we haven’t yet heard of stores that are definitely carrying them.

To find a comic book store near you that is participating, visit Free Comic Book Day.

Here is the release from Diamond Select toys, which is releasing the action figures:

Just a reminder that this weekend is Free Comic Book Day, and as part of this year’s offerings, Diamond Select are offering an exclusive Stargate figure…

In partnership with this spring’s Free Comic Book Day event, comic store customers should be on the lookout for an exclusive Stargate action figure when they visit their local comic book stores on Sunday, May 6th. Available only during this promotion, a limited General Jack O’Neill action figure will help bring new customers to comic book stores across the country and raise awareness of Stargate action figures.

Part of Diamond Select Toys’ upcoming Stargate SG-1 action figure line, the Free Comic Book Day exclusive General Jack O’Neill figure depicts the SGC leader wearing a black t-shirt as opposed to the uniformed version due to be released later this spring and will be handed out to customers visiting any participating comic book store!

“Free Comic Book Day helps introduce new customers to the world of comics and collectibles every year,” stated Michael Leavey, Marketing and Sales Coordinator for Diamond Select Toys. “We’re very excited to be a part of this year’s event in addition to offering a great exclusive figure.”

For more information about Free Comic Book Day or to locate a comic store near you, please visit www.freecomicbookday.com.

Because the scheme is voluntary it might be worth checking with your comic book retailer whether they will be getting this and / or the free comics in.

Culver City, Calif. (April 3, 2006) — Sony Pictures Home Entertainment celebrates the 10th anniversary of “Stargate SG-1” with the release of the Stargate SG-1: Seasons 1-8 DVD collection on June 13. Starring Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver, General Hospital), Michael Shanks (Door To Door), Amanda Tapping (Life or Something Like It), Christopher Judge (Snow Dogs) and Don Davis (A League of Their Own), Stargate SG-1 is based on the hit 1994 film Stargate. SYNOPSIS
Colonel Jack O’Neill (Anderson) resurfaces from retirement when a corrupt being passes through the Stargate to Earth and kidnaps a female soldier. Stargate, discovered in Egypt at the turn of the 20th century, is a portal that immediately carries travelers across vast distances to other galaxies. The reactivation of Stargate unleashes O’Neill’s silence about the truth — O’Neill never destroyed Stargate as he was ordered to years before and scientist Dr. Daniel Jackson (Shanks) is alive and well on the far-away planet of Abydos.

When Colonel O’Neill passes through the Stargate to Planet Abydos to rescue the lost soldier once again, he is reunited with Dr. Jackson who then confesses that the evil being also kidnapped his wife and brother-in-law. Jackson then unveils his new discovery – an ancient map of hieroglyphics indicating other existing Stargates that lead to other planets throughout the galaxy, not only Planet Abydos.

O’Neill returns to Earth to inform his superior General George Hammond (Davis) about the advancement of Stargate as a portal to many unknown frontiers. Hammond sends newly assembled SG teams to travel throughout the galaxy to conduct research and fight conflict and dark power threatening the safety of Earth and other peaceful planets. This team, known as SG-1, works under the auspices of a covert agency known as the SGC, a division of Air Force Intelligence that is highly classified; only the President and the Joint Chiefs know of its existence. Jackson’s discovery and the SG team’s subsequent missions “unlock the universe” and the adventures of Colonel O’Neill, and Stargate SG-1 begins.

In simple terms, we have the new design and webpage templates ready to go, but now need someone to finalise it for us. If you are experienced in editing Flash, HTML and Photoshop files and are interested in working on this project, then we’d love to hear from you! Cheyenne Answers Solutions RPG Questions

Solutions recently submitted some questions to Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment about their new Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG), Stargate Worlds. In the time since we submitted our questions, Cheyenne has rolled out their expansive Stargate Worlds website and forums. Just today, Khatie Postma, Lead Community Manager for the game, got back to us with answers to our questions:

1. Will the game be for the Windows platform only, or will it be multi-platform (Mac OS X for example)?

Right now the game is being designed for Windows PC users, but we are exploring the options of all platforms, including Mac and consoles.

2. Will the game include any of the specific lead characters from the Stargate series (Jack O’Neill, John Sheppard, et al)?

You will have to wait and see, I don’t want to spoil anything about the plans so early in the development process.

3. Will the game make use of the audio recordings that the SG-1 actors did for the seemingly defunct Stargate: Alliance FPS game?

We are not affiliated in any way with Stargate — The Alliance.

4. What is your target demographic for the game? Is it the same as for other MMORPG games such as World of Warcraft?

We are hoping to target a much larger demographic than most MMORPGs seem to target. The fans of Stargate are all ages, and all walks of life. To this end, we wish to make the game as accessible as possible so that all fans, everywhere will be able to join us in Stargate Worlds!

We thank Khatie Postma for taking the time to answer our questions. It’s fair to say many of us in the Stargate fandom are new to MMORPG’s, so we’re watching development of Stargate Worlds with a mixture of interest and confusion. 🙂
