STARGATE SG-1 SOLUTIONS TEAM AND CHARACTER ESSAYS

Jack's leadership: hopes for Season Five

Jack's leadership skills as displayed in Season One were one of the things that first attracted me to the character. I very much liked the way he managed to lead without appearing to impose his will on Teal'c - a warrior of greater strength and experience than himself, and also upon Daniel - a civilian unused to being in a team situation. The tactful and considerate way Jack managed his team was I felt one of his defining characteristics. The time in "The First Commandment" where he says "Does it say 'Colonel' anywhere on my uniform...?" being an example for me of how well he managed to not pull rank on Sam even though she had just been insubordinate to him and he needed to remind her of the chain of command.

I think he also probably did get considerable affirmation of his own self worth from the fact an ex first prime of Apophis, a PhD in theoretical astrophysics and a rather wayward genius, did all follow him and listen to his opinion and clearly have great respect for him.

But by the end of Season Four, Sam was acting as if she had little patience with Jack, Teal'c totally ignored him in "Exodus", and he and Daniel do not appear to be on their previously good terms. (Although Daniel obviously cares about Jack just as much as he ever did as he was evidently worried sick about him, very endearingly, in "Exodus".)

How exactly did that happen? Is this supposed to be legitimate character development of Jack, and if so how is it going to be resolved in Season Five? There were not many opportunities in Season Four for Jack to display his previously excellent leadership skills but he did display them in "The First Ones" and in "Tangent", which is part of the reason why I like those episodes so much.

I think Jack has excellent skills and is a very intelligent and resourceful man who does not give himself enough credit. And, would very much like to see the good leader and considerate and "street smart" individual given a chance to shine in Season Five in storylines where he has a chance to demonstrate his own unique abilities.
