There were thirty webisodes prepared for the first season of Stargate Universe. The special unit that was created for recording these episodes was helmed by Ivon Bartok, known for his extra features that have been included on DVD and Blu-ray releases for Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.
According to creative consultant Joseph Mallozzi, who had his hand in writing several of these webisodes, “Some kino scenes will be episode-specific while others will be more general. They’re added material so, no, you don’t have to watch them to follow what’s going on in the show – however, they do offer insight into ship life and certain characters that someone who only watches the episodes won’t be privy to.”
Thus far, MGM has released 20 of these webisodes both on their main website and at their YouTube Stargate Central channel. Solutions has gathered their descriptions and links together for your convenience in the new wiki article Kino Webisodes: Season One. The article also provides background information to tie these webisodes into the events shown in the television episodes.
Ivon Bartok recently tweeted that there were 30 webisodes associated with the first 10 episodes of Season One and that they should have been included in the SGU 1.0 DVD release that’s coming out on February 9, 2010, in Region 1. However, from the 3-disc set’s preliminary content list, it appears that not all have been included. Bartok stated that “all my stuff is on the blu-ray version,” which has just been announced and does indeed include much more material (see TV Shows on DVD for complete descriptions).
Awesome job on the Kino page, Debi. I can’t believe you did all that in one day, Thanksgiving to boot!
