RDA to Appear in Super Bowl Commercial

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that during this Sunday’s Super Bowl, Master Card will air a commercial in which Richard Dean Anderson will reprise his role as MacGyver to offset later advertising by Visa in the Olympics:

With rival Visa advertising in the Olympics, MasterCard will extend its “Priceless” campaign in a 30-second ad featuring actor Richard Dean Anderson, the star of the ’80s TV series “MacGyver,” in a simulated hostage situation.

The very expensive Super Bowl advertising spots can make or break companies in the eyes of the public, so this commercial is welcome affirmation of RDA and MacGyver’s place in American culture. Visit the link above to read the entire article.

Daniel and Mitchell Catch Press Attention

Daniel mentors Mitchell in 'Prototype'Stargate SG-1’s newest buddy relationship catches the eyes of the press

In preparation for SciFi Friday’s return to new episodes tonight (January 6), various online TV reviewers have given their take on Season Nine’s “The Fourth Horseman Part 2”. Here are a few snippets of these reviews which emphasize one of the best things these reviewers think about the episode — the budding relationship developing between Daniel Jackson and Cameron Mitchell:

Seattle Times says, “Former Farscape star Ben Browder (Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell) and SG-1 veteran Michael Shanks (Dr. Daniel Jackson) are developing some fun on-screen rapport…”

Chicago Tribune says, “The best part of SG-1’s return, in which the team fights a plague unleashed on Earth by the evil Ori, is the subtle comedic interplay between new cast member Ben Browder and SG-1 veteran Michael Shanks…”

In a tiny interview conducted with Michael Shanks by Dinah Eng of the Detroit Free Press, the following was said about the relationship developing between Daniel and Mitchell:

On the show, which airs Friday nights at 8 p.m., Shanks’ character acts as a mentor to the leader of the Air Force team that explores other planets and fights evil in the universe.

“With Ben (Browder)’s character, it’s a brotherly thing, which has a level of built-in antagonism and equal footing,” Shanks says.

Tune in tonight to the SciFi Channel at 8pm Eastern to watch SG-1 as they endeavor to save Earth from the Prior’s Plague!

  • Stargate Featured in New York Times

Amanda Tapping as Lt. Col. Samantha CarterTapping and Cooper interviewed
Summary for Solutions by “Aurora Novarum”

The New York Times featured Stargate SG-1, as well as Battlestar Galactica, recently. Interviewed were SG-1 cast member Amanda Tapping and executive producer Robert C. Cooper.

    The article reads in part:

Ms. Tapping, who has been in the cast for that entire run, said she thought one important part of the success was something not often associated with the genre: humor.

“At the core of it all is a chuckle,” she said. Or sometimes, many chuckles: another favorite memory is of a guest appearance by the expert cut-up Dom DeLuise in Season 3. “I don’t know how they got shots of us not laughing,” Ms. Tapping said.

Later, when interviewing Cooper, he agreed stating: “I wouldn’t say it’s full-on tongue-in-cheek, but we do have a unique sense of humor.”

The article notes the second half of Season Nine is about to start, with Season Ten in the works. “And so instead of winding things down, Season 9 has been used to pep them up, with new characters and ideas. “We decided to sort of reinvent the show,” Mr. Cooper said. “We have the best of the old and the best of the new going forward.”

    NY Magazine Reviews SciFi Friday

    Space Oddity
Science fiction has faltered on network TV. So why is Sci Fi Channel flourishing?

    by John Leonard

Reviewing the success of SciFi Channel’s Friday night’s original programming line-up, Leonard ponders why Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica are sci-fi hits.

After singing praises for Battlestar Galactica, Leonard states, “It’s merely surprising that Stargate SG-1—which improved on the big-screen original by substituting Richard Dean Anderson’s sense of humor for Kurt Russell’s conceptual difficulty with the whole idea of a smile—would not only survive Anderson’s defection from the series, but attract enough loyal viewers to make the Atlantis spinoff possible.”

Leonard continues to analyze why SciFi’s Friday line-up is so successful, saying, “Much as we may appreciate what Mary McDonnell does on Galactica, or Michael Shanks and Amanda Tapping do on Stargate, characters we care about can’t be the only explanation…” He concludes, “It puts us back in touch with our inner alien teen—a lost soul with call waiting.”
