Official Stargate Magazine Closing Down

The Official Stargate Magazine will cease publication after its September/October 2010 issue, its 36th, according to an announcement in the July/August issue of the magazine (see image at right). The glossy, color magazine is produced in London by the science fiction publisher Titan Magazines and has been released bi-monthly for nearly six years. The magazine started while Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis were still on the air, and now will be outlived by Stargate Universe.

Its issues have been rich in photos, interviews, analyses, retrospectives, and news, although much of the latter has repeated what was already available on-line.

Titan Magazines is part of Titan Publishing, and its sister company Titan Books publishes the Stargate novels. There is no word from the company on why the magazine’s run is ending. Given the current difficult market for print media and magazines in particular, the publication may be yet another victim of the economic times.

If we hear more, we’ll announce it here. Back orders of the magazine may be purchased here at Titan Magazines.

Fancast.com has some exciting news about Stargate star Richard Dean Anderson: Scoop! Richard Dean Anderson To Recur On New USA Series!

According to the announcement, Anderson will be in at least five episodes of the new series, which is due to premiere this fall and stars Sarah Shahi (Life) as Kate Reed, “a top-flight litigator who leaves her firm to become a mediator.” He’ll be playing David Smith, “a charismatic but secretive man who enters Kate’s life shortly after the death of her father. In short order, it is revealed that David has deeper connections to the Reed family.”

Co-stars include Michael Trucco (Battlestar Galactica), Virginia Williams (Monarch Cove), and Baron Vaughn (The Awkward Comedy Show).

The show began production on June 16 in Vancouver. There will be 11 episodes in addition to the 90-minute pilot. We don’t know which of these episodes RDA’s David Smith will appear in, but we’ll be sure to report on it when we do!

Stargate star Jason Momoa has wrapped the filming of the new Conan movie in Bulgaria! And to top off this announcement, here’s an official image of him in the role!

The movie is directed by Marcus Nispel and goes back to the original version of Conan the Barbarian established by his creator Robert E. Howard in his books. It now enters post-production and will be ready for release during the summer of 2011. According to IMDb, Conan is “the tale of Conan the Cimmerian and his adventures across the continent of Hyboria on a quest to avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his village.”

Momoa’s next project, as far as we know, is to reshoot scenes from the pilot of HBO’s new series Game of Thrones in Belfast due to the recasting of Daenerys Targaryen, Momoa’s character Khal Drogo’s wife in the story.

Robert C. Cooper's Stargate Journey Ends in San Diego

The following notice just appeared in executive producer Joseph Mallozzi’s Weblog:

A short and early blog entry today as I’m heading off to the first stop in Robert C. Cooper’s farewell victory tour. ”What’s that?” you say. You didn’t know he was leaving? Well, yes. Sad but true. His appearance at this year’s Comic Con panel will mark his final Stargate-related contribution, so if you happen to be in the San Diego area in late July, make sure to say goodbye and thank him for fourteen years and countless hours of gate-tastic entertainment. But, please – no tears. If you start crying it’ll only be a matter of time before he starts crying as well (the ole softy) and that’ll just embarrass him.

This notice is the first we’ve heard about Cooper’s departure, so we’ll have to keep our eyes open for more details as they become available. The San Diego Comic Con will be held July 22-25. Visit their website for more information about the schedule and panel configurations.

Cooper started with Stargate SG-1 in its first season and eventually became one of its executive producers and showrunners. He co-created Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe with Brad Wright and executive produced both shows as well. Make sure to read about him in our 13-4-13 Feature, as well as in our Stargate Wiki. Once again, executive producer Joseph Mallozzi is opening his weblog up to fan questions directed to someone attached to the production of Stargate Universe. This time, you’re invited to ask Louis Ferreira (Col. Everett Young) your questions:

Okay, looks like the guest bloggers are coming up fast and furious. I’ve collected your questions for Jennifer Spence and will be sending them her way this weekend. Next up…

The lovely Louis Ferreira, SGU’s Colonel Everett Young, is looking forward to hearing from you. If you’ve got questions and comments for Destiny’s commander, start posting!

To submit your questions, do the following:

  1. Go to this entry in Mallozzi’s weblog: Yet Another Guest Blogger Announcement!
  2. Scroll all the way down until you get to the comments section.
  3. Fill in the form. Make sure to proofread your entry because you won’t have a chance to edit it after you submit it.
  4. Click on “Submit Comment”.

Mallozzi reviews all comments before they get posted, so it might take a little while for your entry to make it through.

Michael Shanks Cast as "Professor Literature"

Daniel Jackson in HUMAN (MGM)
The last time we saw Michael Shanks in a classroom, he was Daniel Jackson in Prof. Rush's imagination in SGU's HUMAN (MGM)

Between his recent wrapping on the feature Faces in the Crowd and beginning work in a Gothic interpretation of Red Riding Hood next month, Stargate star Michael Shanks has managed to film a guest starring appearance on the Cartoon Network’s new live-action show Tower Prep. Shanks sent a note to his Official Website that introduces us to Professor Literature:

“…squeezed in a guest-spot on a locally shot show called Tower Prep that our good friend Peter DeLuise was directing. It was fun; cool premise, nice folks. I play a character on it named Professor Literature.”

The IMDb profile for the show lists it as a drama, while MSOL-quoted Variety calls it an action thriller. The Newsarama Blog featured an article about the show’s having been picked up and described it as being “about a rebellious teen who wakes up one day trapped in a mysterious, inescapable prep school. By teaming up with his fellow students/inmates, this series looks like a long term caper.” Peter DeLuise has directed more than one episode of the new show, which currently is set to premiere this fall.

More about the show from Cartoon Network/Turner Newsroom:

Tower Prep: A one-hour, live-action scripted series premiering this fall, Tower Prep tells the story of a rebellious teen, Ian (Drew Van Acker), who wakes up one morning to find himself trapped at a mysterious prep school that offers no escape. He forms a secret group with CJ (Elise Gatien), Gabe (Ryan Pinkston) and Suki (Dyana Liu), intent on discovering what they’re being trained for and how to escape. Tower Prep is produced by Cartoon Network Studios in association with Dolphin Entertainment. The series is executive-produced and created by Paul Dini (Lost, Batman Beyond). Glen Morgan (Bionic Woman) and Bill O’Dowd (Zoey 101) serve as executive producers.
