New Projects for Staite, Hewlett

Stargate stars Jewel Staite and David Hewlett have been cast in new movie roles!

Jewel Staite – The latest from her official website’s RSS feed: “Jewel has just been cast in Hallmark Channel’s holiday movie Call Me Mrs. Miracle, starring alongside screen legend Doris Roberts! Shooting is slated to start next week!” The Hollywood Reporter describes the film: “It’s Christmas in New York City, and Mrs. Merkle (Roberts) is a saleswoman in a family-owned department store and works her magic on those around her.” Executive producers are Dan Wigutow, Michael M. Scott, and Debbie Macomber.

Additionally, it was just announced that Staite’s Warehouse 13 episode will air on Tuesday, July 13, on Syfy at 9 PM ET.

David Hewlett – He’s been tweeting about his new film that in its early part of principal photography this week: “Wow! Looks like I just got a nice little role in a HUGE movie…but I’m not allowed to say anything…following me sucks! ;-)” … “Wardrobe fitting today…it’s a little worrying how easy it is to make me look like an uptight prick!” … “Day one on my latest primate movie 😉 Currently holding the key to a great performance: coffee and the ubiquitous breakfast burrito!” … “Very tempted to call Flanigan, just to run him through what I’ve eaten today on set! ;-)” … “Day 2 on the big movie that shall not be named…causing chaos on the streets of vangroovey as only Hollywood can!”

We’re still waiting to hear officially what the film is, but in the meantime, some fans have already concluded that it’s Rise of the Apes, which began shooting in Vancouver July 5 (to correspond with Hewlett’s Day One) and is scheduled to wrap on September 17. We’ll be sure to report it when we have more details.

[Thanks to vida_boheme and wraithfodder for taking the time to investigate the Hewlett project.]

First Images, Video of Joe Flanigan by Martin Firrell

As we reported here in May, the modern artist Martin Firrell has done a study of Joe Flanigan (Stargate Atlantis) as part of his Sci Fi series exploring the deeper significance of popular science fiction. Martin has just posted “a glimpse of a work in progress” of his study of Joe, including still images and some particularly stylistic video in which Joe speaks about the effects of action heroes on women, John Sheppard’s feelings, and the impact on a man of having kids. Definitely worth a visit for all Joe Flanigan and John Sheppard fans!

Shanks' "Arctic Blast" Hits Australia in August

The Australian is reporting that the movie Arctic Blast, which stars Stargate‘s Michael Shanks, will be making its premiere in Australia in August. Here are the details:

THE Tasmanian film Arctic Blast will have its premiere at the fifth Canadian Film Festival in Sydney in August. The sci-fi action thriller, directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith, is an Aussie-Canadian co-production starring Canadian Michael Shanks (Stargate SG-1) and Australia’s Indiana Evans, Alexandra Davies and Robert Mammone. The eco-thriller, about a solar eclipse blasting super-chilled air towards the Earth, is Trenchard-Smith’s first Australian film in more than a decade. “I am proud to have made a movie with a climatologist as the hero,” he says. “Shooting in Tasmania with a crew of young enthusiasts and fellow old lags was a blast, an Arctic blast in fact.” Sydney’s Canadian Film Festival runs from August 2 to 8.

Possible Worlds Blog, the go-to site for the Canadian Film Festival, reports that the movie will premiere Wednesday, August 4, at Dendy Opera Quays, 9/2 East Circular Quay, Sydney. The night’s festivities include “a welcome drink at 6:00pm, followed by the screening at 6:30pm. Tickets are $14 and available from Dendy Opera Quays from July 1st (phone 02 9247 3800 or visit www.dendy.com.au).”
