Stargate at TV Critics Association Tour

Amanda Tapping, Daughter Olivia, Bonnie Hammer

The Stargate literally made an appearance at the recent Television Critics Association summer press tour, as the ‘traveling’ gate was sent down from Vancouver for an elaborate Sci Fi Channel gala on the back lawn of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Pasadena. On hand was the cast of Stargate: SG-1 including Richard Dean Anderson, Bonnie Hammer, President of USA Networks, and Dave Howe, a Sci Fi Channel executive.

Some of the coverage made fun of the people walking around in super-hero costumes, apparently in honor of Sci Fi’s new reality show, “Who Wants to Be a Superhero?” launching July 27. See for example Nola.com.

There are great high-resolution pictures of the cast, including the one above of Amanda Tapping, her daughter Olivia, and Bonnie Hammer, at emedian.net.

RDA News Snippets

Richard Dean Anderson is in this week’s National Enquirer gossip magazine, thankfully for a good reason, a picture of him and his daughter, Wylie. Visit the rdanderson.com forum to see a scan of the image.

Also, he recently appeared at a Sea Shepherd fundraising event. You can view some lovely pictures of him and read some report snippets at the Pegasus Galaxy forum. Note, we are not at all sure that RDA has filmed his five Stargate episodes already, just based on spoilers we’ve heard. RDA asked that fans “write letters” if they’d like to see him in more episodes :).

SG-1's Anderson Like Old Times

From Sci Fi Wire… Note that RDA’s split between SG-1 and Atlantis is revealed in bold below. SG-1 fans may be rightfully disappointed.

Brad Wright—executive producer of SCI FI Channel’s original series Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis—told SCI FI Wire that it’s been like old times having Richard Dean Anderson back on set for several guest appearances on both shows, reprising his role as Gen. Jack O’Neill. Anderson’s first appearance will be in “200,” SG-1‘s 200th episode, which will air Aug. 18 as part of the series’ upcoming 10th season. “It’s been a lot of fun to see him again,” Wright said in an interview. “He’s doing two episodes of SG-1 and three episodes of Atlantis.”

Anderson left the Stargate fold after season eight of SG-1 in order to spend more time with his young daughter. But both he and the show’s producers left the door open for return engagements.

Wright said that SG-1 could not toast its 200th episode without its original leading man. “He was so much the face of SG-1 for so many years,” Wright said. “We did go on without him and made some fine television, but for the 200th episode there was just no way we could even consider doing it without bringing him back. And, of course, when we called him to ask him to do that, he said, ‘Just one?’ So it was nice to know that he wanted to come back. And it’s actually kind of a testament to the environment we have here. People miss it when they’re gone. It’s just a fun place to work, and it’s a fun show to work on. That’s why everybody still works their butt off and why we’re still on the air, I guess, because it shows on the screen.”

SG-1‘s 200th episode is a send-up that picks up the story of the show’s 100th episode, “Wormhole X-Treme!” and brings back guest star Willie Garson as abductee-turned-Hollywood producer Martin Lloyd. The episode “is based on a great idea [executive producer] Robert [C. Cooper] had, and we’ve all written bits and put them all together, and Robert went through it, and then I went through it,” Wright said. “It’s essentially a ‘Wormhole X-Treme!’ revisited, in a sense, because Marty comes back, but this time he needs our help to work on the Wormhole X-Treme! feature [film]. Because even though the series was canceled after three episodes, it did well on DVD. A little nod to Serenity, I suppose. And the Air Force loves it, because they love the notion of a television series out there that is ostensibly … [the] real events in SG-1, in Stargate Command. So, plausible deniability. … So it’s a series of, I guess you could call them, vignettes or flashes. … ‘Wormhole X-treme!’ was pushing it. This is pushing it twice as far. But, you know, it’s the 200th episode.”

S10 Spoilers: Special Guest Appearance

SciFi Wire Releases Information on SG-1‘s Landmark 200th Episode

Richard Dean AndersonSCI FI Wire‘s News Editor Patrick Lee has released information concerning a special guest appearance for Stargate SG-1‘s 200th episode, 10.06 “200”. Beware of spoilers:

Anderson Returns To SG-1

Richard Dean Anderson, former star and executive producer of Stargate SG-1, returns to the series for its historic 200th original episode, SCI FI Channel announced. Production on the bicentennial episode begins April 5 in Vancouver, Canada. Anderson, who will be reprising the role of Gen. Jack O’Neill, will also make special guest appearances in a number of episodes of both SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis that will air in the upcoming new seasons, which are slated to premiere this summer.

Stargate SG-1’s 200th episode, “200,” will center on the SG-1 team as they serve as advisors on a television series that bears remarkable similarities to the goings-on at Stargate Command. As they pitch to the producer the many adventures that they have been involved with over the years, the team discovers that truth really is stranger than fiction, but that nothing is stranger than the machinations of Hollywood. In addition to Anderson, “200” will feature a guest appearance by fan favorite Willie Garson (Sex & the City).

Currently in production on its 10th original season (its fifth on SCI FI), Stargate SG-1 is now the longest-running SF series on American television, surpassing The X-Files and every iteration of Star Trek.

Executive-produced by Robert C. Cooper and co-creator Brad Wright, Stargate SG-1 stars Ben Browder, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, Michael Shanks, Claudia Black and Beau Bridges. SG-1 is produced by Double Secret Productions, in association with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. and Sony Pictures Television.

Willie Garson played Martin Lloyd, the alien fugitive who made “Wormhole X-Treme”, and he will be reprising his role in “200”.

New Details on RDA Mastercard Ad

2 Feb 2006: Edited to add, the 30-second spot is available for download here: MacGyver Ad. Download and enjoy!

Mastercard has published a press release on its new ad featuring Richard Dean Anderson playing MacGyver, giving background and a full rundown of the ad. The ad will premiere during the fourth quarter of the Superbowl and will join the regular rotation of “Priceless” ads in early March. Here is the Mastercard press release:

MasterCard Unveils Ad During the Super Bowl Featuring Actor Richard Dean Anderson

Latest “Priceless” Spot Features “MacGyver,” Highlights Debit MasterCard

Purchase, NY, January 30, 2006 – MasterCard International today unveiled plans to air its latest “Priceless” television execution during the broadcast of Super Bowl XL on February 5, on ABC Sports. The 30-second spot features actor Richard Dean Anderson, who starred as the lead character in the popular 1980s series “MacGyver,” and focuses on the benefits of Debit MasterCard®. It will air during the game’s fourth quarter.

Entitled “MacGyver,” the ad finds Anderson’s character in typical fashion: held hostage in a remote warehouse with time running out on a self-destructing bomb. Cleverly, MacGyver uses the purchases he had made with his Debit MasterCard card — everyday items at a convenience store — to free himself and escape to safety.

“While I’ve had offers to bring the MacGyver character back to life, MasterCard had the sense of humor I felt was needed to bring the character back,” said Anderson. “The commercial really speaks to how oftentimes everyday items are truly ‘priceless’ and can serve as life savers.”

At the end of the spot, consumers are encouraged to visit Priceless.com, a new website containing behind-the-scenes footage and interviews from the filming of the spot.

“Consumers want to be able to purchase the everyday items they need in a way that is easy, quick and convenient,” said Amy Fuller, group head, Americas marketing for MasterCard International. “Because the MacGyver character continues to have a presence in today’s pop culture, we believe featuring him in a Super Bowl ad further articulates the ease and convenience of Debit MasterCard® in a manner that truly resonates with the millions of TV viewers who tune-in to the game each year.”

The spot, which will go into general brand rotation beginning March 6, consists of the following sequence of events:

As a bomb is ticking, MacGyver struggles to free himself from a chair to which he is bound utilizing “Little Tree” air freshener.

Voice over: air freshener: $1.29 on Debit MasterCard

In the nick of time, MacGyver breaks free of the ropes and breaks through a window, only to realize he is dangerously high from jumping to safety. He notices a wire leading to the ground and quickly realizes he has a tube sock in his pocket, which he utilizes as a handle.

Voice over: tube sock: $4

Sliding to safety, MacGyver runs to a broken down truck, which he jump starts — employing a paper clip, ballpoint pen, rubber band, tweezers, nasal spray and turkey baster — and then drives away, narrowly avoiding an explosion caused by the bomb.

Voice over: little things that get you through the day: priceless

The spot culminates with MasterCard’s traditional voiceover, “There are some things money can’t buy…for everyday stuff there’s Debit MasterCard,” and completes with MacGyver in a convenience store purchasing an array of off-the-cuff items, awkwardly avoiding the questioning looks of the cashier.

Cards featuring the MasterCard family of debit brands are accepted in the United States at an estimated 6.1 million merchants and at approximately 396,000 ATM locations. Collectively, acceptance for the family of MasterCard brands is unsurpassed worldwide, currently standing at over 23 million locations.

Creative for MasterCard’s “Priceless” campaign is handled by McCann Erickson/New York: Joyce King Thomas, EVP, Chief Creative Officer; Leslie Sims, SVP, Group Creative Director; Audrey Huffenreuter, SVP, Group Creative Director; and Sally Hotchkiss, SVP, Executive Producer.
