Gateroom at Alpha Site

Summary

Stargate Command built several off-world bases on planets in the Milky Way Galaxy which were supposedly unknown to the Goa'uld. The primary functions of these bases are for evacuation, military reinforcement, and research. The designation for each of these Base Commands is given in the order of the letters of the Greek alphabet.

Stargate References

Each of the off-world sites have F-302s assigned to them. The SGC uses their dialing computer program interfaced with the DHDs found with the Stargates at these sites.

Alpha Site - The Alpha Site is the primary site for evacuations from the SGC (Earth). During normal activities, it is the site to which SG teams are usually diverted when the SGC base experiences Stargate malfunctions or foothold situations. There have been at least three different planets serving as the location of the Alpha Site, because if the location of the site was ever compromised, the facility was moved, usually to the Beta Site. The third Alpha Site on P4X-650 was built inside of a mountain. (Introduced in 2.01 "The Serpent's Lair Part 2")
Beta Site - The Beta Site is used primarily as back-up to the Alpha Site. Whenever an Alpha Site needs to be evacuated, it is to the Beta Site. It is possible that when an Alpha Site is compromised, the Beta Site becomes the new Alpha Site until another location can be found. (Introduced in 7.16 "Death Knell")
Gamma Site - The Gamma Site is primarily a military and research facility. At any given time, over thirty scientists are engaged in ongoing projects ranging from research in both alien technology and alien lifeforms. The first Gamma Site was destroyed by the accidental denotation of the base's self-destruct when alien bugs, called Prior Bugs or R75, got loose. Apparently, the site was salvaged and rebuilt (it is possible that it was rebuilt on another planet, but the planet found for the original Gamma Site was quite unique and desirable and might have been reused instead of abandoned). (Introduced in 9.17 "The Scourge")
