Geopolitical Structure and History
Pangar is a diverse modern world. The area near the Stargate is an excavated desert area, but there are also modern cities and facilities similar to present day Earth.
Pangar was originally a world run by Ra. It was here that he imprisoned Egeria the symbiote in stasis, planning for her to remain forever lost here. Egeria's offspring, also against Ra, the Tok'ra, believed she was killed in battle and never knew of her exile on Pangar. Later Ra lost or gave up Pangar and the Goa'uld Shak'ran took the planet for his own–writing his own hieroglyphs in the pyramids proclaiming his greatness. Eventually Shak'ran too disappeared.
The Pangarans progressed on their own, developing their own culture to be approximately on a par with Earth technologically. The Pangarans especially advanced their medical knowledge. Fifty years ago, they discovered Egeria. Suffering from a pandemic disease, the Pangarans experimented on Egeria and the symbiotes she birthed, creating a miracle drug called tretonin. Egeria, for her part, prevented these symbiotes without her genetic memory and in fact inserted a genetic defect. The Pangarans who took tretonin became dependant upon the drug for the rest of their lives. This in turn created a cycle of continued experimentation. Egeria was dying, and their supply of symbiotes was growing smaller.
It was at this time SG-1 visited and met the Pangarans. The natives were excited to meet these aliens so familiar with the Stargate. They were anxious to get valid Stargate addresses for worlds they believed would have more symbiotes. Without explaining why, the leaders Tegar and Dollen requested instruction for how to reach these worlds, and in return offered their biggest advance–tretonin. They did not mention the origin of the miracle drug, nor its side effects.
Concerned at the Pangarans interest in Goa'uld worlds, and put on guard by the Pangaran archeologist Zenna that all might not be as it should, SG-1 investigated more. Jonas Quinn and Teal'c discovered the pools where the symbiotes were held. During a confrontation, one of the Pangaran guards was infected by a Goa'uld. The Pangarans admitted their desperation. SG-1 contacted the Tok'ra for help.
The Tok'ra arrived to assist the Pangarans and confused at the symbiote's lack of genetic memory. In the meantime, Jonas and Teal'c continued to search the archeology sites to learn more of the Goa'uld presence, discovering the writings that Egeria had been trapped here. The Tok'ra's willingness to help shifted when they realized the captive Goa'uld was really their queen and mother of the Tok'ra movement. They demanded her immediate release. The Pangarans were apologetic, not realizing Egeria was actually a "good Goa'uld", but now they were stuck. If they released Egeria, the large population on tretonin were doomed.
One of the Tok'ra delegation, Kel'maa, took the decision out of their hands by giving up her host to Egeria. Egeria, now able to speak, forgave the Pangarans through their ignorance and admitted her sabotage of the symbiotes. She expressed her pride in her "children" and explained she was dying. However, as the Tok'ra legacy she wanted to leave, her last act was to give the solution to genetic defect, thus saving the Pangarans.
