Dr. Peter Kavanagh

Summary

Dr. Peter Kavanagh is an American civilian scientist who was assigned to the Atlantis Expedition in the Pegasus Galaxy during its first few years, but was reassigned to the Midway Space Station of the Intergalactic Gate Bridge until the Station was destroyed after the Wraith attempted an invasion.

Character Biography

Kavanagh was a leader among his technical team, but his lack of certain social graces made him disliked by many. He is brilliant, nonetheless, and even though he isn't well-liked, he considered some of the people who worked with him in the first year in Atlantis as some of his friends. Kavanagh, however, doesn't hesitate from speaking his mind, especially concerning his assessment of Dr. Elizabeth Weir's performance as the leader of the Expedition. He felt that she lacked the essential leadership skills in making the tough decisions and reported in detail each incident in which he felt she had failed. (Stargate Atlantis: 1.04 "Thirty-Eight Minutes", 1.17 "Letters From Pegasus", 1.18 "The Gift")

When it was revealed that there was a Goa'uld spy in Atlantis, Weir concluded without a doubt that it was Kavanagh and even ordered that he be tortured to extract information concerning the sabotage of the computer systems that would cause the destruction of the Ancient city. The spy was revealed to be Col. Caldwell, the commander of the Daedalus, who had been taken as a host to a Goa'uld on Earth without his knowledge. Kavanagh was not tortured for information after all and it was not revealed whether or not Weir apologized to him for falsely accusing him, but she did feel guilt for what she later perceived as crossing the line at ordering his torture. (Stargate Atlantis: 2.13 "Critical Mass")

After the completion of the Intergalactic Gate Bridge, Kavanagh was assigned to learn all of the control room systems so that the lead scientist on duty, Dr. Bill Lee, could return to Earth. While he was learning the systems, the Wraith successfully invaded the Station, and in an attempt to shut down the wormhole through which the Wraith were entering the Station, Kavanagh accidentally set off a booby-trap that the Wraith had placed in case they lost control of the Station. This booby-trap resulted in the Station's activating its self-destruct countdown. The Wraith had made the system inaccessible, and Kavanagh and five others had to escape using a puddle jumper only seconds before the Station was completely destroyed. (Stargate Atlantis: 4.17 "Midway")

Dr. Kavanagh was then reassigned to the crew of the Daedalus under the command of Col. Steven Caldwell. He was present on the ship when it engaged the "superhive" that a Wraith had built with the use of at least one ZPM that had been taken from the Asurans before their planet was ripped apart (Stargate Atlantis: 4.11 "Be All My Sins Remember'd Part 2"). Unfortunately, the Daedalus was not able to follow the superhive when it escaped through a hyperspace window, but Kavanagh was there to help determine where the enemy vessel went when he intercepted a transmission sent from a Wraith in an alternate reality. The transmission had given the superhive the coordinates to Earth, the new feeding ground that the Wraith had sought ever since their premature awakening! The Daedalus wasn't able to intercept the superhive, but amazingly enough, the city-ship Atlantis had the capability with their wormhole drive. Earth was saved and Atlantis remained on Earth, leaving the Daedalus as the only representation of the Atlantis Expedition in Pegasus at that time. (Stargate Atlantis: 5.20 "Enemy at the Gate")
