A hostage crisis unfolds following an attempt by the Lucian Alliance to seize Destiny, which starts to have ship-wide power fluctuations and blackouts due to its proximity to a binary pulsar.

With conditions worsening for both Kiva's camp and the incumbents, Young uses Kiva's demand for medical supplies as a ruse to strike at her team. But as he does, the ship's systems fail again, the plan goes haywire, and Kiva, in a rage at being betrayed, kills one of the hostages. TJ is forced to heal one of Kiva's officers, which she does, but when he attempts to thank her, she shrugs it off. Wray urges Young to surrender—but Young reminds her that if Kiva gains control, she will kill anyone who's not useful to her. Wray arranges a hostage exchange, and though Kiva fails to hold up her side of the bargain, Young's team is at least able to learn that Chloe and Eli are not among the captives.

Chloe and Eli, still trying to find their way back, settle down to rest, and share a moment of shattering intimacy. Eli is relieved to break the soul-baring moment when he finds a nearby console, which he uses to attempt to contact Rush and coordinate a rescue.

The scientists have an interesting finding: The crashes are due to a nearby binary pulsar, the radiation from which is damaging Destiny's shield and FTL capability. When the shield fails completely, the whole crew will die. The only solution is to restore the ship's FTL capability and move out of range. Rush discovers a way to shift the shield's power to only the side facing the pulsar, giving them enough time to get the FTL system back up. The only problem is, this can't be done from inside the ship, and in order to get Greer and Scott, in space suits, to the critical area, they need Kiva's permission to pass through an area controlled by her.

The Lucian commander recognizes this opportunity for what it is, and uses her leverage to demand surrender of the ship's systems to her. Young, running out of time and trust, is torn, but Telford clandestinely radios to Young that he should surrender. Telford will then find an opportunity to transfer system control back to Rush, who will be in hiding.

Scott and Greer suit up, knowing they have only the time between pulsar radiation bursts—about 46 minutes—to complete the mission. As the transfer begins, Eli realizes what it means for his and Chloe's fate, and Telford sneaks away to find his opportunity to strike. But the keen Kiva discovers his ploy, and in a lighting-fast confrontation, Telford and Kiva shoot each other. When Kiva's officers discover the scene, her lieutenant concludes that Young's people perpetrated an attack on both commanders, assumes violent control, and refuses to unlock the shield to allow Greer and Scott back into the ship to safety. Miraculously, Rush is able to contact Eli, who may be able to let the soldiers in through another portal. Eli gives Chloe a reassuring kiss goodbye, and speeds away to help his friends. With a defeated Young and crew in captivity, Scott and Greer outside the ship, TJ wounded in the melee, Telford unconscious and Rush in hiding, the fate of Destiny hangs by a thread.

He sympathized and expressed surprise at the requested change. For his part, he preferred the old (in his opinion, much cooler and wondrous) science and strongly urged me to pitch Rob on keeping the original. Something I’ll definitely do.
