Share Your Favorite SGA Moments

With the close of Stargate Atlantis as a television series, executive producer, writer, and co-showrunner Joseph Mallozzi shared some of his favorite moments with his weblog readers:

“So, looking back over the show’s five year run,” Mallozzi began, “certain moments and scenes do stand out for me: McKay delivering Teyla’s baby in Search and Rescue, Ronon coming down from the wraith enzyme in Broken Ties, McKay locking lips with Beckett in Duet, the big space battle over the replicator homeworld in Be All My Sins Remember’d, the wraith making himself up to Marilyn Manson in Vegas, Michael discovering his true identity in Michael, Teyla dispatching of Michael in The Prodigal, Ronon and Todd going down fighting side by side in The Last Man, Beckett’s goodbye fade at the end of Sunday, the wraith assault on Atlantis in Siege II, Todd changing the script by killing the other queen in The Queen – to name a few.”

Then, he follows up with an invitation: “What about all of you? If you had to narrow it down to three scenes or moments, which would be your favorites?”

You may share your favorites with Mallozzi AT THIS LINK (in the comments section at the bottom of the page). Mallozzi moderates the comments, so yours might not appear immediately.

And if you’d like to share your favorite moments with us here at Solutions, please leave them in the comment section below (more in our LJ). We’d love to hear from you.

MGM Highlights SGA Wrap Party

The MGM Official Website has posted a short video from the The 100th Episode Wrap Party for all of those involved with the five seasons of Stargate Atlantis. Joe Flanigan, David Hewlett, Jason Momoa, Robert Picardo, Joseph Mallozzi, Brad Wright, and several others are heard from as the celebration continues in the background.

The Wrap Party was put on by MGM in September 2008 at the Sheraton Wall Centre. Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi dedicated his September 21 weblog entry to the event, including posting several pictures of the attendees, as well as of the chocolate Atlantis.

A fan has posted the video on YouTube as well. It’s embedded below:

SGU Spoilers: Series Premiere "Air"

Stargate Universe Banner from MGM

Solutions has obtained two pages of the writer’s draft for the series premiere of Stargate Universe, “Air”. The story is a three-parter, but creative consultant Joseph Mallozzi indicated that he believes that the Sci Fi Channel will broadcast only the first two parts as a two-hour premiere and save the third part for the following week’s installment. Currently, “Air” is set to begin filming February 4 and is slated for a July release.

“Air” is being penned by Robert C. Cooper and Brad Wright, the creators and showrunners of the new television series. Most likely Andy Mikita is the director, but this has not been confirmed. Mikita, however, recently joined Cooper on a scouting trip to New Mexico to find a possible filming location for an alien planet.

If you’re adverse to spoilers, you should stop reading this article here.

Some of the information below is a combination of the new script pages and previously-released character breakdowns, press releases, and auditions sides. Solutions has gathered most of the details in the Stargate Universe Guide in the Stargate Wiki. The following is our take on the information presented thus far and it should also be noted that all spoilers are subject to change as the series itself is in production.

Col. Everett Young is the commander of an off-world base. Formerly a commander of an SG team, Young requested to serve the rest of his commission on Earth two years ago when he married Hailey, but was given this base as a temporary command. This secret off-world base appears to be the key location for the Ninth Chevron Project (not known to be the official name for the project, but is used herein for clarification).

Robert Carlyle cast as Dr. David Rush
Robert Carlyle is Dr. David Rush

The Ninth Chevron Project is under the control of the International Oversight Advisory (IOA) because it is part of the Stargate Program. It also appears to have been underway for quite some time, as there have already been some simulations of the control consoles written under the guise of a “game”. Dr. David Rush is familiar with the Destiny‘s control systems and with the Ancient language, but his programming team used a more rudimentary form of the Ancient language when they created the simulation “game”. Gamer Eli Hitchcock is familiar with the simulation, but only recently was allowed to see the actual consoles. Hitchcock claims to have dropped out of school to play video games “24/7”, so how he got involved with the Ninth Chevron Project isn’t clear.

The United States has a governmental committee headed by Senator Walker. The Senator brings in a contingent of aides with him to tour the base, including his daughter Chloe, who wishes to follow in her father’s footsteps. As far as the IOA is concerned, representative and accountant Camille Wray is present.

During this visit, the base comes under attack (assailant is currently unknown). Young orders non-combatant personnel to their designated safety areas and the military personnel to their battle stations. Young also orders Lt. Jared Scott (formerly known as Lt. Jared Nash) to escort the Senator, his entourage, and Eli to safety.

Apparently, the attack on the base is so severe that everyone who can evacuates to the Destiny. Dr. David Rush might have done something during this time that “screws” things up so bad that he is not trusted when another emergency situation arises.

Stargate Universe: Corridor Hub
Corridor Hub of Destiny

This emergency situation appears to play into the title of the episode, “Air”. While Scott and Marine Sergeant Ron Stasiak are leading crew members Henry and Brody down a corridor on the Destiny, they hear a heated argument between Eli and Rush in a “control interface room”. Rush is doing something at a control panel that Eli doesn’t agree with, and Eli shouts at Rush to stop. Stasiak and Scott enter the room to determine if they should allow Rush to continue his work. This is when Rush tells Eli that the game isn’t an exact copy of the Destiny‘s consoles. Eli doesn’t trust that Rush is doing the right thing and implores him to stop before he overloads the system and “screws” them again. Rush insists that he must reset the life support system so that oxygen will return to the proper levels. If he doesn’t do the reset, he stresses that the oxygen will fall below the critical level and the crew will soon lose the ability to think clearly. Stasiak wants to shoot Rush, but Scott orders him to stand down.

   Stargate Universe: Shuttle Bridge
Bridge of the Ancient Shuttle

The premise of Stargate Universe is that the Destiny is on a course that the stranded crew cannot alter. They are stranded in the far reaches of the universe, cut off from Earth. They have a Stargate in the center of the ship, as well as an Ancient Shuttle, which they can use to visit planets that are nearby. But leaving the ship is a risk because the Destiny could take off at any moment on its preset course to visit Stargates previously seeded on distant planets and leave the away party behind with no means of rejoining the crew.

Sometime during the first two episodes, Senator Walker, Chloe’s father, is killed tragically. Unfortunately, there are no medical doctors among the stranded crew on the Destiny, and only Captain Tamara Johanson (aka Jon) is left to perform medical procedures, but she’s merely a medic. She also must serve as the crew’s psychologist to help people deal with their new situation.

Robert Picardo as Richard Woolsey
Robert Picardo is Richard Woolsey

Stargate‘s Robert Picardo indicated that it might be possible that Richard Woolsey will be present in some capacity as an IOA representative and the commander of Atlantis. “I have already been approached by producer Brad Wright and I told him I would be delighted to do the show,” he told Pop Culture Zoo.

Woolsey is also set to appear in the Stargate Atlantis movie, so hopefully he won’t be killed when the base is attacked. Apparently, Camille Wray is to be the only surviving IOA representative among the stranded crew and as “the highest ranking member of that body left stranded on the ship, she has a false sense of importance and superiority to the other military and civilian population along with a stubborn way of asserting it.”

Brad Wright himself indicated that “Mmmmaybe” they’ll have characters from SG-1 in the premiere much like the time Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks reprised their roles for “Rising”, the premiere of Stargate Atlantis. One could see how having Major General Jack O’Neill or Dr. Daniel Jackson to kick off the newest addition to the Stargate franchise would help draw in long-time fans. Amanda Tapping and Christopher Judge might not be allowed to appear in the premiere because of certain legalities that prevented their appearances in “Rising”, but they could appear later on in the show, as they did in Atlantis.

Dr. Daniel Jackson with Dr. Rodney McKay on Atlantis
Will Daniel and Rodney be seen in SGU?

Mallozzi said, “Brad and Robert pitched out a clever little element that actually makes it very possible to see the likes of Daniel Jackson or Rodney McKay on SGU.” If not in the premiere, these two characters could be seen using the Ancient long-range communications device to “swap bodies” with someone on the stranded crew. This technology exists on the Destiny and has been seen to have originated from the time before the Ancients even set foot in the Milky Way millions of years ago (when they lived in their home galaxy and were known as the Altera). A different version of the technology was present in Pegasus from the time the Ancients lived there. It is possible that those stranded on the Destiny will have a way to go home in an indirect sort of way with the use of these devices. One scenario presented in the audition sides proposes that Chloe and Eli use the technology to interact with people they know on Earth. They use this technology within weeks of being stranded, so it is possible that Rush’s team already discovered its existence and configured a way to communicate with people on Earth before they were stranded since some kind of companion device is necessary on both ends of the communications link.

Another scenario presented in the audition sides includes the selection of an Ancient Shuttle crew from among the now-stranded crew members. Rush and Young discuss the talents of various individuals, and determine that Scott is the best possible choice for piloting, TJ (possibly Tamara Johanson) has skills necessary for survival, and Stasiak is a strong, capable protector. It’s not certain that this particular scenario will appear in “Air”, but would be a great way to introduce the Shuttle much like the Puddle Jumper was introduced in “Rising” for Atlantis. Rush and Young are in competition for command of the Destiny. Rush feels that Young took command from him and Young thinks that Rush is a “self-serving prick” and calls him such to his face.

Following the three-part “Air” are the interestingly titled “Fire”, “Water”, and “Earth”. Visit the Stargate Universe Guide in the Stargate Wiki for updates.

The Sci Fi Channel is already advertising the new series when it debuted a teaser during the broadcast of the series finale for Stargate Atlantis. Their tag: “The Journey Home is the Greatest Adventure of All”. (ETA: Link to Sci Fi for video.) If one weren’t up to speed on the premise of Universe, one might think that Atlantis’s return home to the Pegasus galaxy was the focus of the new series, but we know better since that storyline will be picked up with the first Atlantis movie, scheduled to be filmed this summer and making its premiere on the Sci Fi Channel in late 2009 or early 2010.

Spoilers are subject to change as the episodes are in production.

Additional Casting Calls for Stargate Universe

Stargate Universe Banner from MGM

Spoiler TV has posted two new casting calls for the new Stargate Universe television series, set to begin filming February 4 with the pilot episode entitled “Air”:

[SENATOR WALKER]
Male. 50s. 60s. Distinguished Senator who is the political oversight to this Stargate project trying to dial the 9th Chevron. Also the proud loving father of Chloe Walker his daughter and political aids… GUEST STAR, 2 EPISODE ARC. PLEASE SUBMIT ALL ETHNICITIES. STAR NAMES ONLY.

Senator Walker is the father of series regular Chloe Walker, formerly known as Chloe Carpenter. As indicated in Chloe’s character breakdown, Senator Walker will die a tragic death, possibly during the attack on the base where the Stargate connects to the Destiny through the Ninth Chevron. If they’ve changed the names of the characters, however, it is also possible they’ve changed storylines as well and the good senator might survive to return to the show another day, although the “2-episode arc” detail kind of supports the death scenario. We’ll have to wait and see on that.

[CAMILLE WRAY]
30-50. An accountant with the international oversight body that governs the Stargate program. Now the highest ranking member of that body left stranded on the ship, she has a false sense of importance and superiority to the other military and civilian population along with a stubborn way of asserting it.sptv050769..GUEST STAR, POSSIBLY RECURRING, PLEASE SUBMIT ALL ETHNICITIES.

Wray was talked about by creative consultant Joseph Mallozzi in his blog as an important secondary character. His description: “I also think Wray has a lot of potential for getting under Young and co.’s skin. She’s a definite love her or hate her type of character, one who’ll prove the bane to many a series regular, and probably some viewers as well.”

In addition to signing up Robert Carlyle to portray Dr. David Rush, casting has also been completed for Col. Everett Young, Lt. Jared Scott (formerly Nash), Eli Hitchcock, and Marine Ron Stasiak. The possibility also exists that they’ve selected their Chloe and Tamara Johanson (aka Jon) as well. Mallozzi said that casting announcements will be officially released very soon.

SGA Tonight: There's an "Enemy at the Gate"

Enemy at the Gate

Tonight at 9 PM ET/PT, Stargate Atlantis ends its five-year run as a television series on the Sci Fi Channel. The series finale, “Enemy at the Gate”, written by Paul Mullie and directed by Andy Mikita, is the 100th episode of the series and includes not only the return of Christopher Heyerdahl as “Todd the Wraith”, but also Mitch Pileggi as Col. Steven Caldwell, David Nykl as Dr. Radek Zelenka, Kavan Smith as Maj. Evan Lorne, Michael Beach as Col. Abe Ellis, Martin Christopher as Maj. Kevin Marks, Gary Jones as Chief Master Sgt. Walter Harriman, Amanda Tapping as Col. Samantha Carter, Paul McGillion as the beloved Dr. Carson Beckett, Colin Cunningham as Maj. Paul Davis, Sharon Taylor as Technician Amelia Banks, Ben Cotton as Dr. Kavanagh, Tyler McClendon as “Kenny the Wraith”, and Chuck Campbell as Chuck the Technician.

According to TV Guide, “Todd warns Atlantis about a sophisticated hive ship and encourages the team to attack the vessel before it can pose a threat to Earth.”

The story for this episode was set up in “Vegas”, as strange as that might sound, given that Episode 19 took place in an alternate reality. Executive producer Robert C. Cooper came up with the idea of how the link could be made between the two episodes.

According to co-showrunner Joseph Mallozzi, the finale is not a cliffhanger (no “To Be Continued” at the end). “Regardless of whether we got the pick-up or not,” Mallozzi explained, “we had always planned a clean conclusion to our 100th episode, one that would hopefully leave fans satisfied yet eager for more.”

There are indeed aspects to the story that will need to be addressed, as David Hewlett explained in an io9 interview, “I think what’s nice about the episode is there’s enough unanswered stuff there. There are still things that need to be dealt with that I hope there will be more Atlantis for people to see, in cheaper formats, TV movies or DVD movies or whatever they want to do. But I do hope that’s something we can look forward to.”

Fortunately, some of the events of the series finale will continue in the first Stargate Atlantis movie being penned by writing and production partners Mallozzi and Mullie. Mallozzi said, “The idea originally conceived for the opening two-parter [for Season Six] will now be the basis of the first Stargate: Atlantis movie, the difference being that we’ll be able to tell our story on a much bigger, visual effects-laden, character-centered canvas.”

So, when viewing tonight’s episode, keep in mind that the story doesn’t end and that we’ll be seeing many of those familiar faces once again on our screens. The Sci Fi Channel plans to broadcast the movie during the mid-season hiatus of the new Stargate Universe, most likely placing the movie’s debut sometime in the fourth quarter 2009.

NOTE: Sci Fi is showing “Vegas” at 8 PM as a lead-in to “Enemy at the Gate” at 9 PM. There will also be a repeat of “Enemy at the Gate” at 11 PM.

Robert Cooper Shares "Vegas" Experience

Vegas

Robert C. Cooper wrote and directed “Vegas”, the penultimate episode of Stargate Atlantis. It’s a unique episode in many ways, and Cooper shares how he came up with the idea and what it was like to have only two days to shoot on location in Las Vegas, Nevada, in a small Q&A with MGM’s Sharon Gosling entitled “What Happens In Vegas.”

“I just really wanted to do something that was completely different, completely outside the box,” Cooper related. Viewers will probably agree that he accomplished that in spades.

If, after reading the interview, you have more questions you’d like to be answered about the episode, you’ve got your chance by visiting Joseph Mallozzi’s weblog. He’s taking questions for Cooper about “Vegas” until Friday, January 9. Here’s a link to his latest entry where you can post your questions in the comment section at the bottom of the page: Ask Rob Cooper.

[NOTE: Comments for the Solutions Blog have been turned off for this entry because you must go to Mallozzi’s weblog to ask your questions and for Cooper to see them.]

Brad Wright Reveals More About Third SG-1 Movie

Stargate SG-1 co-creator Brad Wright answered fan questions in Joseph Mallozzi’s weblog about all things Stargate, including giving us a bit more information about the third SG-1 movie.

Here are some key quotes:

  • “We’re making a movie. Carl Binder and I are co-writing the script. Martin [Wood] will direct. If you have a good title, let me know.”
  • “We’re making it in the spring.”
  • “MGM was talking about more SG-1 movies as soon as the first did well.”
  • “The success of the SG-1 movies made an Atlantis movie possible, and all parties decided that was the best way to move forward.”
  • “We need to get some deals in place first.” (why the third movie hasn’t been officially announced by MGM yet)
  • “The next movie will be much more Jack centric.”
  • “MGM owns Stargate, not me. I can’t change studios. The DVD’s came out of a desire to prove we could make movies. I think we surprised the studio with what we could do on a small budget, but not enough to let us make a big Stargate feature.”
  • “If I get RDA in a movie, I don’t cut the scenes. If you’re looking for a re-cut movie, watch Children of the Gods when it comes out.”
  • “I liked the Aschen story too. Insidious. No plans right now.”
  • “I would love to do that [theatrical SG-1 movie with $20-25 million budget]. The reasons we can’t right now are complicated.”
  • Concerning RDA’s limited screentime in Stargate Continuum: “That’s all I could get him for. He’ll be much more involved in the next one.”
  • “I thought Claudia was terrific in Continuum, but Vala won’t be returning in the third movie.”

SGA Tonight: What Happens in "Vegas". . .

Wraith of Vegas

Stargate Atlantis returns to the Sci Fi Channel tonight with its penultimate episode, “Vegas”, written and directed by Robert C. Cooper. Set in an alternate reality, viewers get to see some of their favorite Expedition members in different settings and life’s paths. But, Las Vegas is still Las Vegas, all bright and shiny and the place where many people—or a super-intelligent alien—could actually hide in plain sight.

Detective John Sheppard of Vegas

Detective John Sheppard doesn’t know about Wraith, but he’s seen the results of the feeding process on several corpses found in his jurisdiction. To put some wrinkles in his on-going investigation, Sheppard must deal with the press and the federal government.

“Vegas” had a working title of “CSI: Atlantis” and with good reason: the style of presentation is very much like that of the popular CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which is also set in Vegas. Cooper stated in an interview, “If you tuned in late, you might think you had turned on the wrong show.”

Although the penultimate episode, “Vegas” was the last episode to be filmed. The location shoot in Vegas itself marked the end of Atlantis as a television series. One top-notch location in the city known for its gambling casinos was Planet Hollywood. Carol Cling of the Vegas Voice blog on the Review Journal website posted that the crew spent two days “in front of the casino, inside the casino — and on the roof, where a stunt player will perform a nine-story fall.”

“Nothing makes an episode feel more realistic than shooting on location,” script coordinator Alex Levine posted in his scifi.com blog. “And nothing else really feels like a Vegas casino.” And a Vegas casino wouldn’t have the right feel if it didn’t have an interesting variety of gamblers. Look for Soprano actors Steve Schirripa and Frank Vincent, MGM’s Charlie Cohen, and real-life poker players Todd Brunson and Roy Winston. The Wraith who joins in on a game might not be as recognizable as actor Neil Jackson, familiar to SG-1 fans as Anubis’s “son” Khalek from Season Nine’s “Prototype”.

Gamblers of SGA Vegas Gamblers of SGA Vegas 2

“Other supposed ‘Nevada’ locations were actually shot here in British Columbia,” Levine continued. “Even the desert! And no, they’re not VFX; rather they’re a sampling of the incredibly diverse terrain we have up here in the Great White (and not so white) North.” One of these Canadian filming locations made the Penticton Western News with its incredible explosions: “An explosion tears apart a trailer on the outdoor set during Wednesday’s filming of an episode of Stargate Atlantis in a field just east of Oliver. RCMP closed off a section of Camp McKinney Road during the blast which sent flames over 30 metres into the sky.”

You know how that saying starts out with “What happens in Vegas”? Well, when it comes to Stargate Atlantis and sci-fi, we’ll have to find out if it actually finishes with “stays in Vegas” tonight at 9PM ET/PT on the Sci Fi Channel (repeats at 11 PM).
