DVDs for SG-1 Movies and SGA S3

SG-1 Movies

Gateworld is reporting that the two direct-to-DVD movies will be released in 2008 instead of the previously announced fall of 2007 date. This word is said to have come directly from Twentieth Century Fox, MGM’s partner in the production of the films. Gateworld had no reason for the delay, but stated that Stargate: The Ark of Truth was “visual effects heavy”, implying that this might be a factor as to why the DVD won’t be released until “the first half of 2008.” Stargate: Continuum‘s release is expected to follow the first movie’s sometime in 2008.

Atlantis in "Shooting Hiatus"

The filming cast and crew are taking their annual “shooting hiatus” from June 25 through July 15, according to James “BamBam” Bamford, the Stunt Coordinator for Stargate Atlantis. One of the reasons why it is called the “shooting hiatus” is because the writers don’t usually end up taking a break from writing, as Joseph Mallozzi demonstrates in his recent blog entry, “Hiatus is upon me. And it couldn’t have come soon enough. Finally, a much-needed break from being cooped up in my Bridge Studio office, stuck behind a desk, agonizing over dialogue and plot developments while the world outside passed me by. And so today, I took advantage of my newfound freedom by remaining cooped up in my home office, stuck behind a desk, agonizing over dialogue and plot developments while the world outside passed me by.”

What do the actors and crew do on the hiatus? For the most part, they spend their time off like anyone would — with family and friends. But, some of them might find work, such as Bamford. “I will be working, to start off with, a mini-series entitled “Tin Man” as a stunt performer myself. I may do a day or [two] on Battlestar Galactica or whatever else comes my way…” These jobs usually are small since Bamford added, “Sticking to Atlantis except for the hiatus […] I remain loyal to the show I am currently working on until it wraps for the season, or has a break…..otherwise I tend not to moonlight.”

Before the start of the hiatus, the cast and crew worked on twelve episodes of Season Four. As often is the case, these episodes were shot out of order to accommodate the availability of actors, directors, and locations. An example of when actor availability affected shooting order was when SG-1 Season Seven’s “Lost City” was filmed before “Resurrection”, which was the last episode to be filmed for that season because it didn’t include Richard Dean Anderson. Sometimes, however, if an actor is not available, his or her scenes will be deleted or changed to accommodate someone else, as script coordinator Alex Levine reported in his blog concerning Amanda Tapping’s scenes in Season Four’s “Be All My Sins Remember’d”. Also for Season Four of Atlantis, director Robert C. Cooper’s “Doppelganger” was the first episode to go before cameras, but is slated to be the fourth episode to air, because Cooper then went straight to the production of Stargate: The Ark of Truth. Director Andy Mikita stepped in to film scenes for Season Four’s “Adrift” and “Lifeline” when the episodes’ director Martin Wood was filming scenes for Stargate: Continuum in late March. And finally, it’s not unusual for one location to be used for two different episodes that are meant to be aired a few episodes apart, such as is the case with Season Four episodes “The Seer” (episode eight) and “This Mortal Coil” (episode ten).

Mallozzi also said that some of the Atlantis crew will be going on a “long weekend” to the Comic Con in San Diego, scheduled for July 25-29. If they resume filming between the hiatus and the convention, they’ll have just enough time to film one episode, which takes about seven days to shoot. As Mallozzi indicated, the writers will be working on scripts over the hiatus, and then he said that they “still have three scripts to break when we get back to the offices in mid-July.” In his Production Diary, Mallozzi explained the breaking process: “In order to write an outline, you must first “break” the story. Breaking a story is pretty much what it sounds like. You break the story down into a tease and five acts, breaking those six sections down into individual scenes (an average of 4-5 per act) covering all of the major dramatic beats.”

Season Four is scheduled to premiere in September on the Sci Fi Channel just as filming will be wrapping up (they’re scheduled to be done on September 28). Mallozzi was pleased that Atlantis will have a few more episodes aired to possibly play into the ratings portion of the decision as to whether or not there will be a Season Five, but indicated that they’ll have already written Season Four’s episodes “as planned” before they’ll receive the renewal notice.

Atlantis Returns to Sci Fi in September

During the finales of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis shown tonight, the Sci Fi Channel announced that new episodes of Atlantis will return in September for its first season (Season Four) without its sister show. No specific date was given, however.

Because of the Sci Fi Channel’s new original programming schedule, the ratings for the second half of Season Three will play a large part in whether or not there will be a Season Five of the show. Filming of Season Four is due to wrap on September 28, far too late in the production process for Season Four’s ratings to have an impact and for them to modify the season finale, if necessary, that Paul Mullie has proposed. According to co-showrunner Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog, Season Four’s “Finale” episode will be “ending the season as planned.”

Sci Fi Wire: Tapping Eager To Join Atlantis

SCI FI WIRE talked with Amanda Tapping about her SG-1 character’s move to Stargate Atlantis in the show’s fourth season, currently filming in Vancouver. Tapping observed the differences in the two shows and said that the new environment for Col. Samantha Carter brings out a new side of her.

She’s in command now, as opposed to being in Sam’s comfort zone, which was being part of the hierarchy of the military and being in a subordinate position. She understands Sheppard’s military expertise, and even though she may have the same amount of military expertise, it’s not in this galaxy. She’s never fought the Wraith before, so she defers to him a lot. She defers to [Dr. Rodney] McKay [played by David Hewlett] and his scientific expertise in the Pegasus galaxy. And then Teyla [Rachel Luttrell] and Ronon [Jason Momoa] are complete unknowns to her, so she really has to make her way with them.

Canada's "The Province" Visits the Stargates

Reporters were invited to Bridge Studios last week and were given a tour of the sets for Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Several of the actors from both shows also got some time in with the reporters, and the some of the cast of SG-1 shared what they’ll be doing now that the two movies have completed filming.

Stargate secrets revealed at last

In this article by Frank ‘Teal’c’ Luba, readers are given a brief description of the various departments and sets involved with the shows’ production. Of course, the tour began in the ‘Gate Room at Stargate Command, and then proceeded through General Landry’s office (decorated with Beau Bridges’ family photos), Atlantis’ Gate Room, puddle jumpers, and the set for Stargate: Continuum (spoilery comments, so beware!). Luba also visits the in-house special effects, set decoration, and props departments.

Luba also mentions Andee Frizzell while she’s being made to look like a Wraith Queen, Jason Momoa as he plays his electric guitar in his trailer, and Joe Flanigan as he zooms by on his skateboard.

Stargate cast members ready for new portals

In this article, Frank Luba shares some of his time with the cast of Stargate SG-1 and determines what each will be doing after the filming of Stargate: Continuum completes:

  • Amanda Tapping – She’s now a regular cast member of Stargate Atlantis and comments on the pressure she feels to continue the franchise.
  • Christopher Judge and Michael Shanks – Judge has written a pilot for MGM called “Rage of Angels” that is about “Archangel Michael dying on Earth” and in which Shanks will play Lucifer. There’s the possiblity that the pilot will be shot in British Columbia.
  • Ben Browder – He plans to spend more time with his family after only seeing them for 15 hours during the last five weeks. He might be coaching football and high school pole vault.

As far as Stargate Atlantis stars go, David Hewlett is writing a movie script called “Design of the Dead”, and Luba comments on how the writers cleverly worked around Rachel Luttrell’s pregnancy.

Flanigan on Season Four Friction

Joe Flanigan (Lt. Col. John Sheppard) talked with SCI FI WIRE about the changes in the cast for Stargate Atlantis‘s Season Four, currently filming in Vancouver.

He mourns the loss of Paul McGillion’s Carson Beckett and Torri Higginson’s Elizabeth Weir, declaring, “My God, this sounds like a funeral.” But, at the same time, he is celebrating the introduction of Amanda Tapping’s Samantha Carter who will be Sheppard’s commander and superior officer as a full-bird Colonel.

Sheppard’s history of conflict with the military’s chain of command apparently gets further explored as Flanigan revealed, “I’m trying to find an area of weakness that we can all exploit with each [other] to create a storyline. And it’s been a little challenging.” He adds, “Drama isn’t interesting when people get along. It’s interesting when they butt heads. [..] When everybody just gets along, it could be a little dull. So we were trying to create some areas where we would have a little friction.”

Casting News for Season Four

SCI FI WIRE has featured Atlantis in two recent articles:

Atlantis’ Dr. Beckett May Return? – Robert C. Cooper comments, “The fans were very vocal about his departure, and we understood that he meant a lot to them. We’re working on a storyline that may see him return temporarily. If it works out creatively—if what the fans like creatively and what we like creatively syncs up—that’s great.” Visit the rest of the article for more from Cooper and from David Hewlett about the death of Carson Beckett.

Firefly’s Staite Joins Atlantis – Jewel Staite’s Dr. Jennifer Keller “may develop a romantic relationship with one of the other characters and will become friends with Carter,” according to this article. Also in the article: Carter will be the new military leader of Atlantis, and Cooper points out, “In fact, when she joins them she’s a full-bird colonel, and she’s a superior to [Lt. Col. John] Sheppard [played by Joe Flanigan], so there’s really not much he can say or do; she’s his superior officer.” Carter’s stressed relationship with Rodney McKay will also be addressed early in Season Four. Visit the rest of the article for more from producers Cooper and Mallozzi.

Mallozzi and Mullie Preview Season 4

At the new official Stargate site is a video preview of Season 4. Joe Mallozzi and Paul Mullie talk about their aims for Season 4, including a larger focus on characters, some surprises with current villains, and a new race to contend with that may be friend or foe, the Travelers. The production is more relaxed this year with only 20 episodes instead of 40 to produce, so there is more time to focus on each episode. Cut into the interviews are images from episodes filmed so far, including a view of Carter’s new ‘do’, Sheppard and Teyla hugging, and Sheppard kissing a Traveler at the point of her gun.

Paul Mulllie reiterated that the ratings for Season 3, whose episodes they can do nothing about, will determine whether there is a Season 5.

SGA S4 Spoilers: Miller's Crossing

Introduction

“Miller’s Crossing” is currently scheduled to be the ninth episode to air in Season Four of Stargate Atlantis. The episode is written by Martin Gero.

Details

Summary: Jeanie McKay Miller and Dr. Rodney McKay are kidnapped by Henry Wallace on Earth after Wallace determines that only the McKays can save his daughter’s life using alien nanotechnology.

Henry Wallace kidnaps Jeanie Miller, McKay’s sister, which leads to McKay’s subsequent capture as well. Wallace knew about the SGC’s subcutaneous transponders and disabled McKay’s. He had knowledge of this technology because he worked for the company that manufactured them for the SGC, Devlin Medical Technologies. The company was given limited access to alien technology brought to Earth through the Stargate Program, and Wallace eventually put the pieces together after years of witnessing the military’s unbelievable technological advances. One of the company’s recent projects includes the development of nanotechnology to cure injury and disease. According to McKay, the Devlin Medical has just barely gotten the manufacturing of the nanites perfected and McKay himself was still months away from getting them programmed. Wallace discovered the connection of this nanotechnology to Atlantis and began to monitor McKay’s e-mails to Miller. Based on the content of these e-mails, Wallace believed that Miller had a better understanding of the programming than her brother.

Wallace is attempting to save the life of his daughter Sharon, about 18-20 years old, who is close to death with acute lymphocytic leukemia. The doctors have lost hope that she’ll survive and advise the family to prepare for her death. Not wishing to see his daughter die, Wallace worked on the nanite technology and implanted it into his daughter, but her body began to reject the foreign bodies. He hopes that Miller and McKay can reprogram the nanites in time to save his daughter’s life.

In the meantime, Agent Malcolm Barrett, Sgt. Harriman, Sheppard, and Ronon are back at the SGC attempting to find the two missing scientists.
