STARGATE SG-1 UNLEASHED Gives Fans New Adventures for Original Team

The original SG-1 team is back for another adventure! This time in Stargate SG-1 Unleashed, a tablet game to be released on iOS and Android platforms. “Episode 1” is slated for release this coming March. Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, and Amanda Tapping have all tweeted about doing voice work for the game (we’re hoping that Christopher Judge recorded for the game, too, so that the original team is reunited once more)!

Embedded below is the teaser. What do you make of it? Will you be playing this adventure game from MGM and Arkalis Interactive? What season do you think is the setting and who is that Goa’uld that is threatening Earth? Make sure to register to leave your comments below (if you’re on LiveJournal, we’ve got a thread going there as well).

Actor and Stargate News

More updates from the past couple of months, in case you missed them elsewhere on the web!

In exciting and mysterious news, both Michael Shanks and Amanda Tapping have tweeted that they’re voicing their SG-1 characters for an SG-1 game or app. Michael tweeted: Rumors are true: voicing new SG1 app game. #stargateUnleashed #epicness#badassery pic.twitter.com/OMOfCTS2 We haven’t found other news about the app, but this would be at least the 3rd attempt at a Stargate game, and we hope it finally comes to pass!

Michael’s show, Saving Hope, has been renewed for 18 episodes for Season 2. It will air in Canada and has been sold to foreign markets, while as of now it hasn’t been picked up by a US network. NBC canceled it just before the end of its first season run, but perhaps another network will pick it up for next summer.

Ming Na has been cast as a lead in Joss Whedon’s upcoming super-hero Avengers’ spin-off series, S.H.I.E.L.D. This is a huge deal, as the show is highly anticipated in the US markets at least. We give Ming our hearty congratulations!

Paul McGillion appeared in an episode of Fringe a few weeks ago. Try to catch it if you missed it — it’s called “The Recordist”. Paul was also recently filming another episode of Once Upon a Time, presumably to reprise his role as the Knave of Hearts. Keep an eye out for that one.

Joe Flanigan recently traveled to Austin, Texas to film a pilot for a possible new series on the Lifetime network called The Secret Lives of Wives. He would play the husband of Reed, who is played by Salli Richardson, who co-starred on Syfy’s Eureka.

Ben Browder will appear in an episode of the hit series Arrow. More details here.

Brian J. Smith tweeted that he’ll be appearing in the Tennessee Williams play The Glass Menagerie with Zachary Quinto and others, in a Boston, MA production. More details here at Playbill. He will also be in one episode of the new Syfy series Defiance.

Louis Ferreira appeared in four episodes of the second season of The L.A. Complex. Fans should look for the show on-line or hopefully soon on DVD.

Finally, Stargate writer-producer Carl Binder will be heading back up to Vancouver, this time to be the show-runner for Hallmark’s new series Cedar Cove, starring Andie MacDowell.

Sanctuary Cancelled after Four Seasons

“Sanctuary”, the breakthrough web-series turned cable network show has officially been canceled after four seasons.  The series was noteworthy for its use of green screen technology to give scale to the “everyday” sets of Helen Magnus’s home and “sanctuary” and places around the world (and sometimes under it).    Many Stargate fans were also attracted to the series by its pedigree.  The show was  co-created and co-produced by Amanda Tapping (Samantha Carter of SG-1 and Atlantis), former Stargate SG-1 writer  Damian Kindler and Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis director Martin Wood.  Several other familiar faces from the Stargate family passed by on the screens as either regular or guest stars

Rumors of Sanctuary’s impending cancellation have been brewing for quite a while, since no announcement date for new episodes was forthcoming since the Season 4 finale aired back in December 2011 on SyFy.

Several outlets have reported the President of SyFy, Mark Stern’s statement:

“We’re honored to have been part of this incredible series. In addition to garnering unmatched devotion by fans worldwide, Sanctuary was a bona fide trailblazer, setting new standards with its highly innovative production techniques — including pioneering green screen and RED camera technology — and Emmy-nominated visual effects. It’s been an amazing ride and we look forward to our next project with Amanda Tapping, Martin Wood and Damian Kindler.”

Kindler, Tapping, and Wood also commented in the same statement thanking fans, their studio, and the networks.  They continued by noting:

“From Sanctuary, we also started our charitable foundation Sanctuary for Kids which has raised over $250,000 for children in crisis worldwide. We will be continuing our work with Sanctuary for Kids and are so thankful for the Sanctuary fans and their amazing support and generosity.”

Stargate Briefing: The Alliance, Bridges, Carlyle, Judge, Mallozzi, Momoa, Mullie, Phillips, Staite, Tapping, Wood

Happy New Year!

Here’s hoping that 2012 brings you good health and great happenings!

Stargate, Australian Style

Australia’s getting a Comic-Con of their own this year: Oz Comic-Con! A few Stargate stars have already signed up: JEWEL STAITE and TERYL ROTHERY. They’re hopeful that many more celebrities will be signing up over the next few months in anticipation of the con’s debut on March 31.

Australia was also the home of the developers of the never-released Stargate SG-1: The Alliance video game. They haven’t let termination stop them from creating a trailer featuring their work, however. The Gaming Liberty has extensive coverage of the ill-fated game. Below is the trailer, but The Gaming Liberty article has much, much more.

Beau Bridges Debuts on Broadway January 3

BEAU BRIDGES will be making his Broadway singing debut as corporate tycoon J.B. Biggley in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” to a sold-out audience on January 3 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Bridges got lessons from voice and dance coach Ben Toth.

In other Bridges news, his film Outrun has been given an August 24 release date.

Update on Robert Carlyle

ROBERT CARLYLE’s Once Upon a Time returns from the holiday hiatus on Sunday, January 8, at 8/7c on ABC. He’s made an impression on many in his dual roles of Rumpelstiltskin and Mr. Gold. As noted in ScienceFiction.com writer Jessica Naki’s article “‘Once Upon A Time’: Why Robert Carlyle Won,” some people believe that Carlyle came out a winner after Stargate Universe’s untimely termination after only two seasons.

Mary Seah’s Today Online’s article “Big Stars, Small Screen,” has a few of Carlyle’s thoughts about his American television career:

Robert Carlyle, who currently stars in the series Once Upon A Time, was of the same mind [as Sean Bean’s that the snobbery of whether one was a film star versus a television star has diminished]. “I have always wanted to do a bit of US TV because in the past five to 10 years they’ve raised the bar incredibly. Probably when 24 came along – that changed everything. And then the advent of cable TV,” he said, adding that developments in communications technology also helped change the game. “In the past … there was still an attitude that if you did film, you didn’t do TV, and vice versa. That’s all gone now. I mean, look at it – you can watch movies on the Internet, on the phone, whatever. You don’t have to go to the cinema to see a movie.”

Christopher Judge’s Projects

CHRISTOPHER JUDGE co-stars in the last installment of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight triology, The Dark Knight Rises. The movie premieres July 20.

Judge is currently filming To Have and to Hold. The movie has had several filming locations, including Virginia, Cayman Islands, and the Bahamas. Judge co-stars with Aiden Turner (“All My Children”), Kelly Greyson (“Alone Yet Not Alone”), Rusty Joiner (“Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story), Mark Dacascos (Hawaii Five-0) and John Rhys-Davies (“Lord of the Rings: Return of the King”). A release date has not yet been announced, but is set for this year.

Stallone About Momoa: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a guy move like this”

Catch a video interview with Bullet to the Head star Sylvester Stallone at Best Movies Ever News & Reviews as he talks about the physical demands of this action film that co-stars JASON MOMOA. Interview with Martin Wood

MARTIN WOOD directed lots and lots of Stargate, and now he’s a producer, writer, and director for the hit sci-fi show Sanctuary, which stars AMANDA TAPPING and was created by Stargate vet DAMIAN KINDLER. Steve Eramo of The Morton Report got some time to talk with Wood about his career, which spans over 20 years, and the challenges he faced during Season 4 of Sanctuary. Although incredibly busy with Sanctuary, Wood had the opportunity to direct in Luke Perry’s Goodnight for Justice television movie series.

It will probably be available for another few weeks as CBS.com keeps the last four episodes for free online streaming.

Picardo was thrilled to perform as Scrooge and enthused, “The other wonderful thing about being in anything that is Christmas-related is that you are an evergreen. It becomes relevant again every 12 months. It’s fun to be in something that people can either punch up on their computer every year or pull the disk out of their CD cabinet and enjoy it, year after year, because the music is so great.” Visit Kik Axe Music for more information about the release, including a chance to obtain a CD signed by Picardo himself.

Update on Ben Browder’s Projects

Here’s a new trailer for Bad Kids Go to Hell movie, BEN BROWDER’s most recent film project, which is to be released sometime in 2012:

The Naught for Hire webseries, for which Browder co-produces and stars, is still in “development.” We thought we were getting a premiere of it at July’s San Diego Comic Con, but a new contract with Paramount Digital has apparently caused the premiere to be delayed. In an interview conducted in August with fansite Naught P.I. Agency, producer/writer Jeffrey Berman stated, “Naught, obviously, has a completed script for the entire series and most of the cast is in place. What we are still working on is securing the funds to shoot the project. Since we’re aiming for a web telecast, the funding process is not traditional and as this is still new territory it’s taking longer than we had hoped.” The new launch is now slated to be sometime in 2012.

More on Joe Flanigan’s Metal Hurlant Chronicles

The Sun has a report on the Twitter updates from JOE FLANIGAN and co-star Kelly Brook as they filmed scenes together for the new series Metal Hurlant Chronicles. Flanigan tweeted, “Fighting Turtle Sapiens outside of Brussels with @IAMKELLYBROOK. Who said Halloween isn’t real? Call it Heavy Metal.” He also published a relevant page of the comic book series that is the foundation of this new TV series, which will debut in April 2012 (not yet in the US, though). Brook gave readers an idea of what they’re doing by posting a picture of her posing with two of the “Turtle Sapiens.”

Daemon’s TV described his performance, “Michael Shanks shines as the Pastor who is charming to the outside world, but a monster in his own home.” Check your local listings for the repeat schedule.

Saving Hope‘s home is Canada’s CTV, but it’s possible that American viewers will get to see the new show. The Hollywood Reporter recently posted, “Entertainment One and ‘Rookie Blue’ creator Ilana Frank will pitch the Erica Durance and Michael Shanks-starring medical drama in Los Angeles next week.” Rookie Blue, also a Canadian show that stars SG-1 guest star Ben Bass (Dr. Steven Rayner, 4.14 “The Curse”), airs on ABC in the United States.

Update on Joe Flanigan’s International Sci-Fi Series

Metal Hurlant Chronicles is an upcoming international sci-fi series project that JOE FLANIGAN is a part of. Variety.com has some more information about its distribution schedule:

Earlier this year, Universal Pictures Germany picked up home video and VOD rights for the first two seasons (comprising 12 half-hours). Sony Pictures Television nabbed the series for distribution in various European territories, notably Germany, Austria, German-speaking Switzerland and Luxembourg via its pay TV network.

The first season will be delivered in April and the second will bow in November 2012. Each episode will adapt stories from the original graphic novels.

Created by comic artists Jean Giraud (aka Moebius) and Philippe Druillet in 1974, “Metal Hurlant” became a sci-fi phenom in the 1980s.

The level of Flanigan’s first-season involvement still isn’t known, but we’ll keep an eye out for more information. Hopefully, the busy actor will update his Twitter account soon!

In the meantime, we can enjoy this interview conducted earlier this month at the Entertainment Media Show in London. He talks about his recent projects and filming abroad.

Jason Momoa at New York Comic Con

There are loads of reports about JASON MOMOA’s appearance at the New York Comic Con held a little while back. Just recently, the notification for Huffington Post’s brief interview with the Conan the Barbarian star hit our inbox. Here’s a Stargate-mentioning snippet:

Q: With your characters on Stargate Atlantis like Ronan Dex and Game of Thrones, do you gravitate towards these warrior types or is that just something because you’re 6’4″ and huge?

JM: When I did Stargate Atlantis, I wanted to work and it was a great opportunity, four years of working on that.

I think when Drogo came along, that’s a once in a lifetime chance to play anything like that. I’ve never seen a character like him in the movies or on TV. He’s such a powerful, raw character. That role was the first time I’ve ever wanted a character in my life.

Because of that, the same casting director came on Conan so everything just kind of lined up that way.

I don’t know, we’ll see. Hopefully there’s a rom-com in there somewhere coming up.

Momoa’s most recent project is his movie with Sylvester Stallone, Bullet to the Head (aka Headshot).

Michael Shanks in Lifetime’s The Pastor’s Wife

Our COMING SOON feature has been updated with the premiere date of MICHAEL SHANKS’s television movie project for Lifetime, The Pastor’s Wife. We got the date of November 5, 2011, from this recent announcement about co-star Rose McGowan’s titular role at Monsters and Critics:

Lifetime is set to premiere the original movie The Pastor’s Wife, starring Rose McGowan and Michael Shanks in a film about the shotgun slaying of a small town minister and revelations of his dark secrets involving sex, lies and betrayal — shocking his God-fearing community and changing it forever.

The Pastor’s Wife will debut on Saturday, November 5, at 8 pm ET/PT.

Based on a true story that made national headlines, The Pastor’s Wife centers on the 2006 death of Matthew Winkler (Shanks), a beloved minister and community leader who was mysteriously shot and killed in his Selmer, Tennessee, home. During their investigation, the authorities soon zero in on Matthew’s wife, Mary (McGowan), as the crime’s prime suspect.

Make sure to visit the link for more on the project.

Amanda Tapping Sanctuary Interview

Season Four of Sanctuary is currently airing on Friday nights on Syfy and Space, and AMANDA TAPPING provides lots of interesting behind-the-scenes details concerning its story development and production in an in-depth interview published at The Morton Report. This season is comprised of 13 episodes, a reduction from last season’s 20, and Tapping commented on the benefits of a shortened season:

“There’s a whole trigger effect of what Helen has been doing, and, again, I think this season is highly ambitious and it sort of blows the lid off anything we’ve done before. It’s a beautifully shot and written season, and I actually don’t mind that we were taken back down to 13 episodes this year. I know that that’s kind of Syfy’s mandate right now- they’re not commissioning 20-episode series. They’re commissioning 13 and sometimes less, so when we found out that we got a 13-episode pick-up, some people said, ‘Oh, man, you guys got ripped off,’ and we were like, ‘No, it’s all good, because now we can make 13 really kick-ass episodes of television.’ We’re not spread too thin and we knew we could do that. Twenty episodes was a big order and we were thrilled to have it, but we have a really good solid season with these 13. Believe me when I tell you that there are no duds episode-wise.”

Tapping also talks about directing, sets, motion capture, and Stargate vets DAMIAN KINDLER and MARTIN WOOD, so make sure to visit the link for more.

Update on Shanks’s New Film Project

MICHAEL SHANKS is filming a new zombie movie he referred to as Eerie 13 (aka 13 Eerie). We’ve got more information about the plot from this article in MJ Times, the news site for the movie’s filming location, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada.

“The film is a zombie movie,” Richelle Bourgoin, publicist for Minds Eye Entertainment, told the Times-Herald.
“It centres on some forensic undergraduate students who are undertaking a scientific expedition on a remote island that was formerly used as a biological testing ground for life-term criminals left for dead, but they are not dead. They are undead as they find out,” she said.

Bourgoin said filming is taking place in and around Moose Jaw and is due to finish at the end of October.

The film stars Katharine Isabelle, a Canadian actress, who played the lead role in Ginger Snaps, as student Megan; Michael Shanks from Stargate as the professor; Brendan Fletcher from The Pacific as student Josh; Nick Moran from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as Larry the driver; and Brendan Fehr from CSI Miami as student Daniel.

Beau Bridges Records Track for Haiti Relief

From Variety: Composers in tune for a cause: Orchestral work created for Haiti relief:

Twenty-six years ago, “We Are the World” and “Live Aid” raised millions for African famine relief. Now, some Hollywood film composers have joined together to write a symphony they hope will raise at least $1 million to help the victims of last year’s earthquake in Haiti.

“A Symphony of Hope,” a 50-minute work penned by 25 different composers from the film, TV and game worlds, was released last week and has already hit Amazon.com‘s top-25 chart of new classical releases.

[…]

Rounding out the album are three additional tracks that Lennertz hopes potential buyers will find attractive: jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and singer Lucy Schwartz performing their spins on traditional Haitian tunes, and actor Beau Bridges reading an original poem about the disaster.

Robert Picardo Reunites with Voyager Co-Star Mulgrew

Robert Picardo as Damian in NTSF:SD:SUV

Star Trek: Voyager star Kate Mulgrew has a new 15-minute series called NTSF:SD:SUV (National Terrorism Strike Force: San Diego: Sport Utility Vehicle). It’s part of Adult Swim that shares channel space with Cartoon Network nightly between 9:00 pm to 6:00 am ET/PT. Here’s a snippet of the interview Mulgrew did about her new series in which her Voyager co-star and Stargate alum ROBERT PICARDO guest starred recently:

In “Twistin’ the Night Away,” the actress had the pleasure of being reunited with one of her former Star Trek: Voyager costars, Robert Picardo, who played U.S.S. Voyager’s Holographic Doctor. “That was my call. I was sitting next to Paul Scheer and [series executive producer/writer John Stern] and overheard them saying that they needed a guest-star who could play a really creepy character,” recalls Mulgrew. “I told them, ‘I know him. He’s one of my best friends – Bob Picardo. They both said, ‘Yes! Can you call him?’

“I called Bob right then and there. He came in the next day and was perfect. The thing is, Paul will do that all the time, which is one of the reasons why I love him. Any idea is a good idea and he’ll embrace it. At one point I suggested to Paul, ‘You should get all the Star Trek guys in here. It would be a riot,’ and he said, ‘You’re absolutely right.’ It’s a very collaborative set. It has a wonderful old spirit, you know, because we’re not talking about trillions of dollars here. We’re talking about a collaborative effort to make people really laugh.”

Read more of the interview at The Morton Report.

SanctuaryThe fourth season of AMANDA TAPPING’s hit Syfy show Sanctuary premieres this Friday, October 7, at 10 PM ET. The star, executive producer, and occasional-director Tapping gave an interview recently with The Province in which she discusses some of the highlights of the new season.

“This season is a little darker than previous seasons, a little more action-packed. We go back in time. It’s all part of a master plan,” she told Alex Strachan from Postmedia News. “I would like to see it continue for a while. We have a plan in place, and we’ve stayed with it so far. We always wanted it to go at least five seasons. From my perspective, I’m not ready to let it go yet.”

Tapping also discusses her fans and charity fundraisers, so visit the link for more (as far as we can tell, there are no spoilers in the interview).
