SGA S4 Spoilers: Be All My Sins Remember'd

Introduction

The following article contains spoilers for the Season Four episode “Be All My Sins Remember’d”. This is the eleventh episode of the season (the second part to the mid-season two-parter) and is written by Martin Gero.

Details

Summary: The Atlantis Expedition and the Wraith join forces to execute a daring plan against a common enemy.

McKay and a Wraith work together in a lab on Atlantis with two Marines keeping watch. They’re working together under an extreme time limit and McKay reassures the Wraith that they’ll be done as planned. The Wraith doesn’t believe the estimate is long enough, and McKay claims that he performs better under pressure. They’ve spent enough time together that the Wraith has picked up on McKay’s modus operandi and offers to speed up the process by threatening to feed on him. The Marines don’t take this as a joke, even as McKay tries to reassure them that it is, but he still moves as far from the Wraith as possible to continue his work.

In the meantime, both the Daedalus and the Apollo are in orbit over Atlantis. Carter is with Caldwell on his ship, looking at the upgrades that include a retrofit of an Asgard terminal. They discuss Carter’s command and how different it is from being on an SG team.

Later, the Wraith is with Sheppard, Ronon, and Teyla on a puddle jumper. They’ve gone to the Wraith’s hive ship to negotiate the joining of forces. The Wraith’s fellow Wraith stunned the Expedition members so that they could talk with the Wraith in private. The Wraith wakes up Sheppard and tells him he’s managed to get seven hive ships instead of the twelve they had anticipated to join them. The Wraith explains that not all of the hives agreed to the plan and that some of them don’t have queens to create new soldiers should any of them be lost. Sheppard agrees that seven is better than none and they proceed with their plan.

While his team is out, McKay stays behind in Atlantis, this time working with Zelenka in the lab. They are conducting their experiments on a block of silvery metal [Although silvery metal has been seen on Stargate SG-1 as the appearance of the inert state of Replicator cells, the common enemy in this story is currently not known].

SGA S4 Spoilers: The Seer

Introduction

The following article contains spoilers for the Season Four episode “The Seer”. The episode’s airing order is currently not known, but it will be in the first half of the season, placed in sixth, seventh, or eighth position.

Details

Richard Woolsey is in the city and is included in a discussion with Carter and McKay. Somehow McKay reactivated the virus for which the Replicators were originally created — to attack the Wraith. But now there is the problem of shutting down this virus. There is a Wraith who claims to have the original shut-down virus, and now the Expedition must decide if they can work with this Wraith.

In the meantime, the City of the Ancestors has a guest — Davos.

Davos has the ability to see things that will take place in the future. He shares his visions with others by “showing” them to them, including McKay and Col. Carter. Davos claims to have never been wrong in what his visions show. The problem with his visions is that those with whom he shares them could possibly interpret them incorrectly. According to Davos, the events that McKay saw actually happened, but McKay’s interpretation and conclusions drawn from the vision were incorrect. Davos has shared a vision with Carter and she must deal with the possibility of what this vision has revealed. She admits that it was pretty hard to misinterpret — the future of the galaxy rests on the actions of but a few — the people of Atlantis. And she is the one who must decide on what actions to take at the “crossroad”.

Davos spends time getting to know the people of the city, especially Teyla. The Expedition met Davos on a planet while they were seeking the fate of her people, and he tells her that they are still alive, but warns her that she may not like what she finds. He also knows that Teyla is pregnant and that she has kept her condition a secret because it is a complicated issue.

Davos is ill. He knows he doesn’t have long. Dr. Keller is treating him, but his condition grows worse. She gives him morphine for the pain, but it clouds his mind, preventing him from helping the Expedition know what awaits.

While Davos is under Dr. Keller’s care, Sheppard reports that a second hive ship will arrive soon. Carter sends him to the chair room to prepare for its arrival.

SGA S4 Spoilers: Casting for "Tabula Rasa"

Introduction

The following includes casting spoilers for Season Four’s episode, “Tabula Rasa”, written by Alan McCullough.

Details

Executive Producer and co-showrunner Joseph Mallozzi has been writing about the various stages of production for Season Four of Stargate Atlantis in his personal blog. Once in a while, he’ll drop hints about each of the episodes, such as working title, casting, or set design. He also provides pictures from his visits to the set and other departments. In his April 23 entry, he mentioned casting for “Tabula Rasa”.

Not much is currently known about “Tabula Rasa”. The title is Latin for “scraped tablet” (which has also been translated to mean “clean slate” or “blank slate”). Writer McCullough finished up his final draft around March 21 and they are now shooting scenes. As far as plot is concerned, Mallozzi hinted on March 22, “We discuss Alan’s Tabula Rasa rewrite. How could Lorne top his barefoot scene in Doppelganger? Well how about this meaty role? Oh, and poor Katie.”

Zach Selwyn

As far as casting is concerned, Mallozzi talked about finding the actor for “Scientist #2”:

Zach Selwyn was on the lot today. For those of you not familiar with the larger-than-life host of G4’s Attack of the Show, he is the star of a SGA rap video that took youtube by storm. In fact, Zach rapped and danced his way into a guest-starring role as episode linchpin Scientist #2 in season four’s Tabula Rasa. His big scene is tomorrow, first up! I wished him luck and assured him that, as much as I would love to watch his early morning performance, I’m the victim of a rare medical condition that necessitates my sleeping in past 7:30 a.m. every morning. Despite the fact that he was celebrating his birthday, he did come in to interview cast members for his show and, God knows why, thought it might be a good idea to interview me as well (a decision, I’m certain, he now deeply regrets). Still, since we were shooting the interview on Stage 3, I did manage to snap some pics of the Daedalus.

Zach Selwyn was born April 23, 1975 in Tucson, Arizona. Some of his previous television acting appearances include Chicago Hope, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, and Dragnet. He is not only an actor, but also a composer, screenwriter, and a country-rock musician in Los Angeles with his band “Zachariah and the Lobos Riders”.

SGA S4 Spoilers: Casting for "Reunion"

Introduction

The following includes casting spoilers for Season Four’s third episode, “Reunion”, written by Joseph Mallozzi (and Paul Mullie) and directed by William Waring.

Details

In the episode “Reunion”, Ronon is reunited with some of his fellow Satedans who are among the few hundred survivors of the Wraith attack that occurred approximately eight years ago and that left the world desolate. These Satedans explain how they were caught inside a system of caves when the opening collapsed. After spending three days digging themselves out, they found that the Wraith had conquered their world.

Among Ronon’s friends is Tyre who, along with Ara, wants Ronon to rejoin them. Ronon is torn between his loyalty to the Atlantis Expedition and to his homeworld’s last survivors. But, Ronon discovers that his friends’ new lifestyle is not as inviting as originally perceived.

Mark Dacascos

The role of Tyre required an actor who could expertly portray fight scenes. They found their man in Mark Dacascos who has both acting and martial arts experience. Executive producer and showrunner Joseph Mallozzi chronicled his day (April 18) with the following entry about the casting of Dacascos as Tyre:

9:00 a.m.: While Paul is sequestered in his office doing a pass on Seer, I’m in the conference room for the Reunion concept meeting. 1st AD Gordie Mac runs us through the script while director Will Warring presides. As things move along, Bam Bam, our stunt coordinator, grows increasingly anxious about the casting as he has fight scenes to choreograph. Producer John Lenic informs us that all is good because Mark Dacascos has signed on to play the role of Tyre. Mark was terrific in Brotherhood of the Wolf (and his stint as the host of Iron Chef America – hmmm, wonder if he can get me on as a guest judge), and is apparently a very, very sweet guy according to Bam Bam who worked with him on The Crow. When the meeting eventually wraps up, Executive Producer John Smith sounds the alarm: “This episode is going to be big!”.

Mark Dacascos, like Jason Momoa, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. He started acting when he was literally approached off the street, but has studied the art ever since that first experience, which he said all ended up on the cutting room floor. Dacascos also says at his official website that martial arts has “always been a part of my life, and I’ll work hard to keep it that way.” His parents have influenced his career in the martial arts and he is now a world renowned martial artist. He has appeared in both television and film as both an actor and as a stunt professional.

Sci Fi Magazine: Col. Carter Gates to Atlantis

June issue of Sci Fi Magazine now on stands

Season Four of Stargate Atlantis is in full production in Vancouver and SCI FI MAGAZINE had a chance to talk with executive producer Robert C. Cooper and actors Amanda Tapping (Col. Samantha Carter) and David Hewlett (Dr. Rodney McKay) about Tapping’s joining the show’s cast. The article didn’t address the issue of how Carter’s promotion will affect the dynamics of the SG-1 team in the two upcoming direct-to-DVD movies.

The article implies that Tapping’s Carter will be a full-bird Colonel when she becomes the Atlantis base commander in civilian Dr. Elizabeth Weir’s stead. Concerning Weir’s replacement and Torri Higginson’s reduction to recurring status, executive producer Robert C. Cooper stated:

“I can’t make people feel better who just love Torri and Dr. Weir and want to see her on the show,” sighs [Robert C.] Cooper. “Unfortunately, that’s just not going to happen. All I can say is that Sam Carter is a wonderful character, and Amanda Tapping is a wonderful actress, and I think she will fill the role on Atlantis admirably. I’m excited about seeing the evolution of her character. Brad [Wright] and I created the character Dr. Weir and we love the character and Torri, but the change needed to be made.”

Hewlett, who plays Dr. Rodney McKay, was enthusiastic about Tapping’s joining the cast. His character and Carter have a “love-hate” relationship that Hewlett is anxious to develop further:

“I think there’s a lot of potential there. The great thing is that Amanda’s character is struggling to be a leader now, after being someone in the field getting dirty with the troops. She’s being thrown into a leadership position, and McKay has never been very good at taking commands from anybody. I think there is a lot of potential for some fun, because they are both brilliant. […] There’s also the fact of the matter that McKay is absolutely smitten with her. It’s great for me on a completely selfish level. First off, I love working with Amanda.”

Tapping was cautious about the decision to make the move to Atlantis, but is looking forward to establishing positive relationships with the current cast:

“I’m certainly going onto Atlantis knowing that it’s not my show. I’m not going to try and put my stamp all over it. I really do feel, like the character, that there has to be a lot of tact involved, for Carter and Amanda. I’m very cognizant and respectful of their show and their dynamic. For Carter and Amanda it will just be finding my place. I don’t want to make ripples in the lake.”

Cooper compares Carter’s move to become the leader of the Atlantis Expedition to that of O’Neill’s when he left his team and became the commander of the SGC. But, Cooper also stressed that the characters and their leadership styles are different enough that they will not “be stepping on well-trodden territory there.” For Cooper, Carter’s promotion to command the Atlantis base is a natural step in the character’s evolution:

“It’s about time she [Carter] got a command, and we had to keep that from happening on SG-1 because we wanted her to be part of the team. This is a perfect opportunity to evolve her character in the natural way that it should have in the franchise.”

Tapping looks forward to her character’s evolution:

“I really love the Atlantis cast, and they are a great cast of people. Plus, the way Joe [Mallozzi] and Paul [Mullie] presented it to me, when they sat me down and asked how I felt about it, they presented it in such a way that it seemed like a really exciting opportunity for the character. Not only is it for me personally, but also for Carter. It’s a whole new level to her, and I thought, ‘This is actually going to change her.'”

SGA S4 Spoilers: Reunion

Introduction: Spoilers

The following article contains spoilers for the Season Four episode “Reunion”, currently scheduled to air as the third episode.

Summary

Ronon is reunited with those from his homeworld and is asked to leave the Atlantis Expedition to rejoin them.

Details

Ronon has encountered fellow Satedans, including Tyre and Ara. They tell him that they had fled to a system of caves in the hillside before the Wraith arrived. They were trapped in a collapse during the Wraith attack. It took them three days to dig out, and then another two weeks to reach the Stargate, but by then, Sateda had been destroyed.

Tyre and Ara had heard that Ronon survived and had become a Runner. There were stories about him: he had become a legendary figure, standing seven feet tall and killing a hundred Wraith. They also knew that he had joined the Atlantis Expedition and that Atlantis was inhabited once more.

Ronon is torn between the loyalty to his people and loyalty to the Atlantis Expedition. If he decides to rejoin his Satedan friends, the price he might have to pay could be far greater than leaving his newfound life and friends behind.

SGA S4 Spoilers: Casting for "Travelers"

Introduction

Season Four of Stargate Atlantis is currently being filmed. The following includes casting spoilers for the fourth episode, “Travelers”, written by Paul Mullie and directed by William Waring.

Details

In the episode “Travelers”, Sheppard is captured by a group of people who live on a ship. At first these people went into space in order to avoid the Wraith, but after several generations, life onboard a ship defines them as a people. They scavenge the galaxy for advanced technology and have found an Ancient battleship similar to an Aurora class. Unfortunately, they don’t have a way to operate the ship because they lack the Ancient gene that Sheppard uses to interface with the technology. The Travelers had heard that there were humans operating the technology of the Ancestors and placed spy satellites near the orbiting Stargates of a few planets hoping to detect a Puddle Jumper coming through. Sheppard was piloting one when he was detected and attacked.

The leader of the Travelers is Larrin. She tells Sheppard about her people and threatens his life in order to get him to reactivate the battleship with his gene in order to perfect an interface adaptor that they are developing.

Casting for Larrin has been difficult, according to comments such as “This Larrin casting will be the death of me” made by Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog. It is possible that Larrin and other Travelers will have recurring appearances throughout the season, since Mallozzi has hinted that the group could prove to be a technologically advanced ally of which the Atlantis Expedition is in such dire need against the Wraith and Asurans. Mallozzi and director William Waring worked with LA casting agent Paul Weber in the search for the perfect actor among “interesting potential candidates.”

Finally, Mallozzi announced, “The lovely and talented Jill Wagner, formerly of Blade,” has been cast as Larrin (in his March 27 entry).

Jill Wagner played Krista Starr in Blade: The Series, another television series filmed in Vancouver. After graduating from North Carolina State University in 2001, Wagner moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. According to her IMDb profile, Wagner is known as the “Mercury Chick” because of her series of commercials for Lincoln-Mercury automobiles.

Season Four of Stargate Atlantis will be premiering in the fall of 2007. The final ten episodes of Season Three will begin with “The Return Part 2” on Friday, April 13, at 9pm Eastern, on the Sci Fi Channel.

SGA S4 Spoilers: Travelers

Introduction: Spoilers

The following article contains spoilers for the Season Four episode “Travelers”, currently scheduled to air as the fourth episode.

Summary

Sheppard is taken prisoner of a group of ship-faring people known as the Travelers who wish to use his Ancient gene to reactivate long-dormant Ancient technology — specifically, an Ancient battle ship, similar to an Aurora class.

Details

The Travelers might have started out evading the Wraith, but now, they live on a ship with hyperspace capability and land on planets when they need supplies or when they conduct trade. After having traveled in this way for so long, the lifestyle has become their identity.

Sheppard has been captured, beaten, and bound by the Travelers Silas, Nevik, and Larrin. Of the three, Larrin, a female leader with the title of “Commander”, continues interacting with Sheppard on an individual basis. She explains who they are and how they live. Larrin knows that Sheppard has the ATA gene and she knows of the Lantian technology. She calls the Ancients the Ancestors and tells Sheppard that they had heard rumors about a group of humans in the galaxy who were using the technology against the Wraith. The Travelers were curious, so they set up spy satellites near the gates in orbit (Space Gates) in order to encounter them. In Larrin’s words, “We got lucky.”

The satellite picked up Sheppard’s presence in his ship and attacked him because he was flying the puddle jumper, Lantian technology that requires the gene to operate. They took samples of his blood in order to configure a control interface adaptor. The device is not yet perfected, but the Travelers are hopeful it will eventually work. Until then, they’ve decided to use Sheppard as their interface to initialize a dormant Lantian battle ship similar to an Aurora class and make it operational once more.

  • Silas (Bridge Crew/Navigator)
  • Nevik (Chief Science Officer)

Atlantis Season Four Filming Starts March 1

SPOILER WARNING: The following contains some spoilers for Season Three and Four of Stargate Atlantis.

Fans of Stargate Atlantis have been given a behind-the-scenes look at the pre-production process by show-runner Joseph Mallozzi in his new personal blog. Recently, Mallozzi told his readers the titles of six of the first episodes slated for the new 20-episode season. The producers are currently in “prep week”, the week before filming begins to basically set up everything from casting, costumes, stunts, special effects, props, visual effects and playback, set design, and location scouting. It all comes together with a series of meetings with each department head. Then, the filming begins on March 1.

Last year, the filming of Season Three took a break during July, but this year, Mallozzi has stated that the cast and crew will most likely take their break in June. Then, it’s back to work until they’re finished filming sometime around September 28.

Season Four will see plenty of changes in front of the camera with the absence of Paul McGillion (Dr. Carson Beckett) and limited appearances of Torri Higginson (Dr. Elizabeth Weir), and with the addition of Amanda Tapping (Lt. Col. Samantha Carter) to the main cast, as well as Jewel Staite in her recurring role of Dr. Keller, Beckett’s replacement after his accidental death in Season Three’s “Sunday”. Mallozzi stated that viewers would have to tune in to find out if there are any other changes to the personnel of the Atlantis Expedition as they face a new enemy and new challenges in the Pegasus Galaxy.

It’s not unusual for episodes to be filmed out of final airing order because of various challenges the production crew may face, including cast availability. Right from the start, we know that Amanda Tapping will not be available for filming some of the Atlantis episodes because she’ll be filming the two Stargate SG-1 movies (The Ark of Truth is to start filming April 15; Continuum, June 1; each taking about four weeks to film). This might be why Carter will be seen in only 14 episodes of the 20-episode season and possibly why they are starting production with the episode “Doppelganger” instead of the season premiere “Adrift”. Additioinally, Robert C. Cooper is writing, directing, and producing “Doppelganger” and then going straight to writing, directing, and producing Stargate: The Ark of Truth, so his availablility was also most likely a contributor to his episode being first on the production slate.
