Storyline

Morgan Le Fay of Arthurian legend is an Ascended Ancient. While Daniel, Vala, and Dr. Weir (in Atlantis) search for information about Merlin’s weapon which allegedly can destroy an Ascended Being, Le Fay decides to break the rules and interfere with the lower planes of existence because she knows of the dire threat the Ori pose.

At first, she disguises herself as part of a holographic computer interface which Daniel and Vala are using to find the location of Merlin’s weapon. Le Fay then shows her true self, an Ascended from the Lantian race.

From the days of old, Le Fay was thought to be Merlin’s rival and Daniel questions her motives. She reveals that Merlin was Moros (Lantian Councilman) and Myrddin both, and that for some time they had been rivals, but after many thousands of years, things changed.

Le Fay tells of the Lantians’ inability to live among the primitive societies that Earth offered when they left Atlantis 10,000 years ago. Some of them chose to join the societies, , thus spreading their genetic make-up into the populace, while others lived in seclusion and meditation.

Eventually Merlin and Le Fay ascended. After a few thousand years, Merlin decided to retake human form in order to create the weapon. He attempted to hide his work through the use of the Interdimensional Device, but he was discovered. Le Fay was the one sent to watch him.

Merlin kept his ascended knowledge and powers of the advanced humans. He was one of the most powerful beings on the planet at the time. He helped Arthur and built Camelot.

As Le Fay tells her story, Daniel grows suspicious of her motives.

According to Gateworld's episode synopsis obtained from the SciFi Channel (Plot summaries for 'Pegasus Project,' 'Insiders'), Carter and McKay are working on detonating several nuclear warheads in order to make the wormhole jump from a Space Stargate (a Stargate which is floating in space versus one that is situated on a planet. Space Stargates are a regular occurrence in the Pegasus Galaxy, most being in planetary orbit.) to the Ori's Supergate. The Atlantis Expedition Team is working on making a type of Stargate relay system which will enable travel from one galaxy to the other easier (called an Intergalactic Bridge). A wormhole was first seen to jump from one Stargate to another when the originating Stargate was subjected to a powerful energy blast — this is how the second Stargate in Antarctica was discovered in 1.18 "Solitudes". Carter used the same principle of detonating a bomb at the SGC's Stargate in order to divert the outgoing wormhole away from the planet being pulled into a black hole in 2.15 "A Matter of Time".

Teal'c is in a cargo ship near the Ori's Supergate while Carter and Mitchell (and presumably McKay) are on the Odyssey. They are in radio contact with Teal'c whose cargo ship might have been detected by an Ori warship. Teal'c is near the Supergate in order to extend a cloak around the active Stargate. (NOTE: It is unknown how Carter and McKay plan to make this wormhole jump from their Space Stargate to the Ori's Supergate if the Supergate is still active. It is possible that the cloak is intended to break the Supergate's connection first so that the outgoing wormhole from the Space Stargate can be diverted to it.)

An additional complication is that a Wraith ship has been detected on its way towards the Odyssey.

Production Notes

  • "Tomorrow, it's episode #3, Brad's Daniel story, that sees the occasionally-bespectacled one travel far, far away." — Joseph Mallozzi in his GateWorld Blog, November 21.
  • "As I mentioned in my previous blog entry, the occasionally bespectacled one takes a trip far, far away in episode 3. Brad will be doing the honors on this one. Very interesting. There was plenty of heated debate in the writers' room while we were breaking this one." — Joseph Mallozzi, November 28 Blog.
  • "Brad is working on a story in which Daniel, finally, gets to go to Atlantis. So far, we have no Carter crossovers planned." — Joseph Mallozzi, GateWorld Q&A, December 20. (It was confirmed that Daniel's trip to Atlantis is to be in this episode by Joseph Mallozzi on SG1Solutions, December 21.)
  • This story has "major story arc implications" and caused "heated debate in the writers' room", the reason being: "That you'll have to wait and see although, at the time we were discussing it, it was intended to serve as the launch for a significant, potentially very controversial story arc for one of the characters." — Joseph Mallozzi, SG1Solutions, December 22. This may or may not be related to the "controversial story arc" for Daniel which might mean his becoming a darker character, as has been alluded to by Mallozzi in the past and about which he has stated on SG1Solutions, "I've been sworn to secrecy on this one."
  • The "potentially controversial story arc" for Daniel which had been identified with this episode was tabled, but Mallozzi said, "We'll probably get resume discussing "the arc" in the coming weeks." (SG1Solutions, January 20)
  • "Haven't read the script, but the plan is for him [Daniel] to come back at episode's end." — Joseph Mallozzi, SG1Solutions, January 20.
  • According to Gateworld, David Nykl, Dr. Radek Zelenka of Atlantis, will be making a guest appearance in this episode. It is also rumored that Joe Flanigan (Col. John Sheppard) and David Hewlett (Dr. Rodney McKay) will also be making crossover appearances, but the episode in question for these two actors has not yet been confirmed. (Gateworld: Nykl to Guest Star on Stargate SG-1, March 3)
  • Episode 3 is a crossover episode in which many of the cast of Stargate: Atlantis will appear. In one of two storylines, Daniel and Vala will dig through the archives of Atlantis' library searching for something to stop the Ori. They will discover something ‘interesting and titillating’. — reported from Michael Shanks Interview in SciFi Talk Podcast, early March.

Note that all spoilers are subject to change before the finished episode is produced.
