The following is a collection of spoilers gathered from various sources. Keep in mind that these interpretations are subject to change.

The team is in an underground cavern comprised of chambers. Each chamber presents a different challenge. Mitchell and Teal'c are trapped in one chamber and Daniel and Vala in another. The ceilings in both chambers are lowering, threatening to squash them after they unsuccessfully meet the challenges. Daniel, however, solves the puzzles in enough time to save everyone's lives.

Back at the SGC, Daniel activates an Ancient long-range communications device which links his and Vala's minds to the bodies of an Ancient married couple, Harrid and Sallis, on the planet Celestis in a far galaxy. They are rendered unconscious during the link and no one knows how to deactivate the device.

"Check out Avalon II and Origin in which Daniel takes center stage and 'opens up a huuuuge can of worms'." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi in his Q&A thread on GateWorld.

"The main story arc that will drive most of the action through the show's 9th season and (hopefully) beyond will be inextricably linked to Daniel, his past experience with the Ancients, and his experiences in the opening 3 parter." &mdash; Joseph Mallozzi in his Q&A thread on GateWorld.
Amid the standard-issue gold and jewels, Daniel uncovers a book apparently written by the Ancients. He reads a fantastic tale: The highly advanced Ancients may have once called themselves the Altera, and may have evolved in a far distant galaxy. The crew excavating the treasure also finds a piece of Ancient equipment, which Daniel believes is a communications device.

"We’ve always tried to ground SG-1’s stories as well as mythology in some form of Earth mythology and put a twist on it. Previous to this it was Egyptian mythology and the Goa’uld posing as Egyptian gods. Going forward, we had to decide what mythology we were going to next play on. We hadn’t done the King Arthur/Avalon/Merlin mythology before. With Merlin being one of the more famous magical figures, I thought it would be interesting if we revealed he was an Ancient. That Merlin had, in fact, returned to Earth from Atlantis after the war with the Wraith and settled on our planet." &mdash; Robert C. Cooper in an interview with Steve Eramo in ''TV Zone Special #64''.
Always eager to uncover more secrets of the Ancients, and excited by the possibility of visiting galaxies beyond the reach of the Stargates, Daniel persuades Mitchell and Gen. Landry to let him test the machine.

<font color="#AC4516">From Script Coordinator Alex Levine's SciFi.com Blog entry for July 20th:
Within seconds, he and Vala &mdash; whose lives are still bound to one another by the Jaffa bracelets &mdash; drop to the floor, unconscious. Already developing a keen sense of how things work at Stargate Command, Mitchell deduces that this is a bad sign and puts the two under medical supervision. Similarly worried, Teal'c skips a critical meeting of the new Jaffa council to stay by his friend Daniel's side.

Fire! In an upcoming scene in Avalon Pt. 2, our fearless SG-1 Stunt Coordinator Dan Shea caught on fire! Yep, it’s true. A wider shot selection forced him out of his fire-retardant garb so he could be in the shot and near the “burn” (the fire-stunt). When Dan went to put the “bridge” down over the flames to let the actress out of the ring of fire, the fire was accidentally blown toward him and he caught on fire. Stop, drop and roll! Thankfully he wasn’t hurt.
Meanwhile, Daniel and Vala find themselves inhabiting the bodies of two married villagers on a distant planet. Being married to Vala &mdash; in even the remotest possible sense &mdash; gives Daniel the creeps, even before he learns that the villagers are devout worshippers of all-powerful and unforgiving beings called the Ori. What's worse, the two people whose bodies Daniel and Vala are inhabiting are suspected of heresy against these mysterious gods.

Factoid: the village from Avalon Pt. 2 is entirely within our Effects stage — it’s not outside at all. There will be a behind the scenes featurette called “It Takes a Crew to Raise a Village” on the DVD’s for season 9, which, among other interesting things, shows the village being built via time-lapse photography.
Before long, Vala ends up chained to a sacrificial altar, about to be burned to death by the village's Administrator and his fanatical followers. Restrained by the vehement villagers, there's nothing Daniel can do but watch in horror as the flames are lit. Back on Earth, Mitchell and the others are watching, too, as Vala slips toward death. Because of the bracelets, if she dies, so will Daniel. Apparently, only divine intervention can save the pair now....

Oh, speaking of dirt. If you’re thinking the Stargate powers that be don’t pay enough attention to detail, you’ll be amazed to learn that the network took issue with the color of the dirt in the village set. Thankfully, the matter was resolved. The producers and the network settled on brown. Now that’s keeping it real.

Précis

Still in the underground caverns of Avalon, the team faces several challenges to prove their worthiness and scholarship as a test to access the knowledge of the Ancients who returned to Earth 10,000 years ago. The thrill of success is soon replaced with fear and uncertainty after Daniel and Vala activate a newly-discovered Ancient device.
