Geopolitical Structure and History

The planet of Argos had a Greco-Roman architecture near the Stargate (1.09 "Brief Candle"). The area is not far from a seashore. The people of Argos called themselves the Chosen. They were humans who believed Pelops was their creator and granted them 100 blessed days on Earth which they should celebrate.

In truth, Pelops was a Goa'uld who used nanites to accelerate the aging process of these people. The nanites were transferred by bodily contact. A child born one day would appear toddler age the next. Pelops also standardized the sleep cycle of the Chosen by setting the nanites to respond to frequencies. At sunset, the people would sleep, at dawn they would rise. This frequency only had a limited range, so Pelops first rule was that no one leave the village. The frequency system was hidden within the base of Pelops's statue in his temple. The place also included hidden tablets journaling the experiments in an obscure Goa'uld dialect.

The people were blissful in their ignorance. They wore bright colors and feasted daily, although what textile industry or food sources they had were never explained. SG-1 arrived just as one Argosian was giving birth. Daniel Jackson helped with the birth, and the child was named after him, Dan-el, in gratitude by the parents. SG-1 were feted by the joyful people. One, Kynthia, was very attracted to Jack O'Neill. She presented to him a cake, which he accepted. What he didn't realize was it was a marriage cake, and drugs were part of the recipe.

O'Neill, in his stupor, followed Kynthia's lead, and only became aware of himself again after they had sex. His team found him just as the Argosians were retiring to sleep. Infected by the nanites, O'Neill slept too. His aging process was accelerated because of his own natural age. They found Pelops log and Capt. Carter returned to the SGC to get results to Dr. Fraiser. They discovered the nanites in the bloodstream. SG-1 tried to discover what was wrong with the people while Jack remained quarantined on the planet, rapidly appearing to age.

When the sample nanites they had for testing began to break through the quarantine at the SGC, Hammond ordered all samples destroyed and Argos placed on an off-limits list for people to visit, although they would send O'Neill supplies. O'Neill became bitter, revealing the truth to the Argosians about Pelops. Shocked and appalled Pelops thought of them as slaves, the people tore down the statue of him, inadvertently disrupting the frequency device.

O'Neill and Kynthia walked along the seashore by the village, ending up staying awake all night. When they returned, they found everyone still asleep after the sun had risen. O'Neill discovered the frequency device and contacted the SGC. Daniel and Teal'c translated enough of the journal to know how to change the frequency and shut down the nanites. The people of Argos would then age at a normal rate, and Jack O'Neill's appearance would return to its natural age within a couple of weeks.

The SGC stayed in touch with the people of Argos. SG-2 returned from a follow-up mission to the people of Argos shortly before SG-1 and Hammond met with Senator Kinsey to describe the program (1.21 "Politics").
