Reol Ring
Summary
The Reol Ring is a Tok'ra created device that injects an alien chemical into a victim, making them believe the ring bearer is whoever is suggested to them.
Technical Specifications
The ring is a small metal piece of the jewelry that fits easily on a human man's finger (5.15 "Summit"). It has a sharp pinpoint on its exposed side, coated with the Reol chemical.
This chemical, once injected in its victim, momentarily disorients him or her. The victim is then susceptible to the suggestion that the person before them (usually the ring wearer) is whoever he claims to be. The victim literally sees the false identity as an illusion. The illusion is created by merely stating the name of the person the ring wearer is trying to impersonate. The user must be very careful not to prick himself with the ring, because the results of same would be unknown.
This suggestion can take effect at least a half-hour after the chemical has been injected (10.09 "Company of Thieves"). It also seems to alter short term previous perceptions of the ring-wearer, so that the victim forgets ever suspecting the wearer was anyone else (5.16 "Last Stand Part 2"). The chemical has proven effective against human, Goa'uld, and Oranian physiology (5.15 "Summit Part 1", 10.09 "Company of Thieves").
Stargate References
When SG-1 encountered a Reol, they were exposed to its natural defense, a chemical that altered their memories and made them believe the alien creature was actually a member of their own team (5.04 "The Fifth Man). When Janet Fraiser was exposed to the chemical, even through a plastic decontamination bag, she too had a mild reaction to the same effect.
The SGC brought the chemical to the Tok'ra's attention (5.15 "Summit Part 1"). They were able to modify the chemical for use with a ring. They requested Daniel Jackson use the ring to go undercover as Lord Yu's lo'taur, Jarren. Jacob Carter warned Daniel to not prick himself with the ring, because he didn't know what may happen if the user self-inflicted the chemical. Even though Daniel looked nothing like the real Jarren, once injected with the chemical, Lord Yu accepted Daniel as such and seemed not to remember ever seeing Daniel Jackson at first. The disguise was believed to be secure since none of the other system lords scheduled to attend had seen Daniel's face and so would not realize he was not Yu's servant.
That confidence that the disguise was secure ended with Osiris crashed the Goa'uld summit. She clearly recognized Daniel Jackson, but did not expose him in the public meeting. Instead she confronted him privately in Lord Yu's quarters. As she attacked, Daniel wrapped his hand around her arm and injected her with the ring (5.16 "Last Stand Part 2"). After a momentary disorientation, Osiris looked at him blankly and accepted his explanation he was Lord Yu's servant, apparently forgetting any previous recognition of him. She only saw through the illusion when Daniel forced her to recognize him, declaring his true identity to dissuade her from throttling him to death.
The Reol ring was next used by Cameron Mitchell to infiltrate the Lucian Alliance (10.09 "Company of Thieves"). Mitchell chose to impersonate Kefflin, one of Netan's most trusted lieutenants and one not known by the other seconds. Mitchell was able to get close enough to prick the Lucian leader without suspicion. Netan saw and heard Kefflin when he interacted with Mitchell.
The ruse worked well until Tenat had an audience with Netan. Tenat had met "Cam Mitchell" once before when he pretended to be a bounty hunter who captured Vala Mal Doran and her accomplice Hans Olo (Daniel Jackson) (9.04 "The Ties That Bind"). Tenat chose not to reveal the deception in front of Netan. Instead, Tenat wanted part of whatever ruse Mitchell was planning. Mitchell went along with that misconception, slapping Tenat on the arm before walking away...and in doing so injecting the Oranian with the ring chemical. A half hour later, Mitchell boarded Tenat's ship, telling the crew that he was Netan. Announced as such to Tenat, when Mitchell appeared, Tenat saw the Lucian Alliance leader in front of him. Mitchell was able to maintain the deception until the real Netan appeared on video communication.
