"Continuum" Trailer on YouTube

Fans at the Vancouver Creation Con held this past weekend got treated to a new trailer for Brad Wright’s Stargate: Continuum, due for its release directly to DVD on July 29, 2008, in North America (Region 1). One of the fans has placed the screening on YouTube for you to enjoy, but be aware that the video and sound quality aren’t top-notch.

Twenty lucky fans were given a screening of the entire movie along with some of the actors, who were also seeing it for the first time, and producers in the Stargate franchise. Executive producer and co-showrunner for Atlantis Joseph Mallozzi was on hand to take some candid pictures, which you can see posted in his personal blog for April 6.

The fans who were given the chance to see the full movie have given quite favorable reactions thus far, but they’ve been sworn to secrecy, having had to sign non-disclosure agreements. They’ll have to suffer in silence as the rest of us anxiously await the official release this summer (below’s a countdown for us):

SCI FI: Goldsmith Talks Stargate DVD Scores

Joel Goldsmith as he composes for "The Ark of Truth" (Image from DVD)

Composer Joel Goldsmith was recently interviewed by Mike Szymanski for SCI FI WIRE about the scores for the two direct-to-DVD movies, Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum.

“First of all, I could use a symphony orchestra rather than electronics that simulate an orchestra,” Goldsmith said. In the Uncovering The Ark of Truth special feature of the DVD, fans are given a behind-the-scenes view of how the movie was put together, including watching as the Seattle Northwest Sinfonia performed Goldsmith’s score.

Writer, director, and producer Robert C. Cooper corresponded closely with Goldsmith as the music was written. “He would explain the emotion and the subtext that he wanted or needed in the scene.”

Cooper said in a recent interview for MGM’s official website that the music was one of the highlights of the movie. “That was one of the most fun aspects of the process that I’ve ever experienced, going down and seeing the score performed by tremendously talented people in an orchestra.”

Goldsmith told Szymanski, “And because the Ark movie wrapped up some of the stories so well, I reached for a few of the familiar themes from the Ori and Replicators and then created different situations and new themes for Teal’c. Of course, everything was more cinematic.”

Seattle Northwest Sinfonia

For Brad Wright’s Continuum, Goldsmith was also given the opportunity to draw upon some of the older themes that he established since working with the production back in the days of the pilot in 1997. “It is a great, old-fashioned SG-1 film. It is more retro-Stargate, and, without giving away too much, it’s going back to some more things from the past.”

The soundtrack for The Ark of Truth is currently slated for release on April 18, but you can pre-order it through Goldsmith’s FreeClyde website, which states, “Along with this epic score is a 16-page full-color booklet that includes articles by Robert C. Cooper, Brad Wright, and Joel Goldsmith. Stargate Fans will be thrilled by the original artwork designed by the FreeClyde team and exclusive photography from the film.” The website also has small sound clips of five of the pieces from the soundtrack.

Wright in the Middle of Stargate Projects

Here’s an update on what Brad Wright is doing with the Stargate franchise, some of which has been derived from the recently-published interview he held with the fans at GateWorld as they attended the Creation Convention held in Vancouver this weekend.

Stargate: Continuum

Continuum Title Screen from Ark DVD

Wright confirmed that the first stand-alone direct-to-DVD movie Stargate: Continuum will be released in North America on July 29, 2008. The writer and producer told the Official Magazine recently about working this date around the San Diego Comic Con, which is being held from July 24 to July 27. MGM has prepared for the event by covering ten buses with Stargate ads and by scheduling a panel (like what was done for Cooper’s The Ark of Truth last year).

Stargate Atlantis

Stargate Atlantis title

Wright was kept busy last year with the two SG-1 direct-to-DVD movies while the production of Season Four of his and Robert C. Cooper’s creation Stargate Atlantis was in full swing, but he still attended production staff meetings for the show. He also managed to get in a story idea (“This Mortal Coil”), but didn’t have the opportunity to write.

But that’s changed for Wright this year during the production of Season Five: He’s written the episode “The Shrine of Talus”, which is currently being prepped for shooting. It is slated to be the sixth episode of the new season. The episode has been described by executive producer and co-showrunner Joseph Mallozzi as “a David Hewlett tour de force” that made actor Jewel Staite cry. Wright has written a “tour de force” episode before when he produced SG-1 Season Seven’s “Lifeboat” for Michael Shanks, who won a Leo Award for his performance.

SG-1: Children of the Gods

Abydos from "Children of the Gods"

Cooper and Wright have recut the Stargate SG-1 pilot “Children of the Gods” to make a Special Edition DVD, scheduled to be released by the end of this year.

“I saw it on television, and I thought, ‘We can do better than this,'” Wright told GateWorld. “And it wasn’t just the visual effects—it was the whole thing. It was the way we tell story. It was the whole 4:3 thing. And I thought the score and the music was so heavy-handed. And, frankly, there was some bad writing.”

Of particular concern to Wright is Sha’re’s full frontal nudity scene, about which he said, “It doesn’t belong in Stargate.” That scene has been cut out of the new version, which will run approximately seven minutes shorter than the original.

The goal of the new version is to make the pilot a “movie”, rather than a two-part television episode. “Twelve years on, what is worth making is the movie — the story of ‘Children of the Gods’ that is the movie. We spent a week or so recutting, editing, pulling some stuff out, updating the visual effects in many cases, [and] cutting out things I thought never belonged there.

“We went back to dailies [that were shot in 1997]. We are rescoring. There is new material, but most of the new material is visual effects or scenes that have been cut. It is tighter. It is significantly tighter. The editing pattern is different, and therefore the performances are different. It’s a different movie.”

Stargate Universe

Chevron of the Giza Stargate

Cooper and Wright pitched the concept of the third television series Stargate Universe to the Sci Fi Channel back at the end of October last year, right before the Writers Guild of America strike. Sci Fi has not given the new show the go ahead just yet, though.

“The pitch was received very well,” Wright told GateWorld, “[but] we pitched an expensive series—the idea we have is not cheap. I think we’ve proven ourselves, so … ‘Can we please have enough money to do it right this time?’ And, if not, then honestly I don’t want to do it. Why do it wrong?”

Originally, the show was going to be a stand-alone movie … a Stargate movie designed to bring in new viewers. It is still set in the present day, but is not an SG-1 story nor an Atlantis story.

“The idea of Stargate Universe is that it is set on a ship that was part of an Ancient experiment that was set in motion probably millions of years ago—one that they never saw to fruition, but that we can. They got busy with the whole ascension thing.”

Wright explained that the experiment was “to send a ship across the universe, and to send one ahead of it to seed the galaxies with Stargates, and that they would one day use the ninth chevron to get there [to the ship]. And that’s what Stargate Universe is.”

As to when the show, if approved by the Sci Fi Channel, will get started, Wright said, “Internally, Robert and I are a little bit torn, because we had such a great time making The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum. Making one or two of those a year would be a damn fine thing to do! Honestly, it takes up a big chunk of time writing it, a big chunk of time making it, and then the post on a movie is more than twice as complicated as post on the biggest episodes. So it’s not like you can just knock one off while you’re making a television show. It’s just too much.”

Wright explained to GateWorld that “too much” also included the production of 40 episodes concurrently like what was done with Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis for three years in a row. If Sci Fi Channel does come through with the money, it’s not clear when the new show will be produced, but apparently scheduling considerations will be at the top of Wright’s list.

Cooper, Woeste Talk About "Ark" Challenges

The "fire scene" being filmed for "Stargate: The Ark of Truth"

In the final part of the Ark Angel – The Ark of Truth series at MGM’s official Stargate website, writer/director/producer Robert C. Cooper and director of photography Peter Woeste talk about the challenges that they faced in putting together the first direct-to-DVD movie for the Stargate franchise since the cancellation of the ten-year-old series Stargate SG-1.

Woeste reveals some of the behind-the-scenes details concerning his role as the director of photography in which he helps to make the movie come to life. “I’m loaded down with calculators and tables and celestial prediction devices and GPS’s so I can determine the right time of day to shoot something. I’ll do that for any shoot, whether it was that particular one or whether we’re planning a scene in a meadow somewhere or in a busy street. I’ll plan the time of day. It’s important that you’re aware of that. Everywhere in the world, the sun conditions are different. If I’m planning a shoot in May and that’s when the production would like to do it, well, I’ll check the script and make sure that the proper sun conditions will actually exist. If not, we’ll reschedule.”

"Fire scene" in the movie

One of the most challenging scenes for Woeste to light was the “fire scene” in which Adria and Vala have a conversation in the Hall of Fire. “I just loved how that came together, because I know the difficulties that we had shooting it and how unsure Robert was. He just wasn’t sure about doing it the way we did it, and we were all kind of antsy when we went home that night. We had worked until like three or four in the morning, and we went, ‘Ugh!’ All that effort, and we didn’t think we had a scene at all. So that was great, to see it come together the way it did.”

The biggest challenge of all was meeting the schedule that the new direct-to-video format demanded. The distritubor needed time to get their side of the production rolling, whereas there was a more direct relationship between production and the broadcaster when making a television series. “Fox, the distributor — their comfortable window for mastering, marketing and distributing a DVD is about six months. They want the finished movie in their hands six months prior to that. Back that up from March 11th… We said ‘Look, we need more time’, and they condensed it for us. But they wanted to release both movies this year and they needed time between Ark of Truth and Continuum. So they needed the movie by absolute latest end of October 2007.”

Along with the challenges of fitting in the availability of actors and getting all of the visual effects shots completed, Cooper explained that he had seen the movie over 400 times at various stages. Not only was he the writer and director, but he was also the producer. Even so, there were parts of the production process that he enjoyed.

Daniel's tears

Cooper concludes the interview, “I think the performances are great. I think the actors really stepped up, taking things to another level. I think Michael [Shanks] is brilliant in some of the scenes that he’s faced with. I actually think everyone, Chris [Judge], Amanda [Tapping], Ben [Browder] and Claudia [Black] gave great performances, and the guest stars like Tim [Guinee] and Currie [Graham] are really great. And the music. That was one of the most fun aspects of the process that I’ve ever experienced, going down and seeing the score performed by tremendously talented people in an orchestra.

“It’s the sort of thing that was a real pleasure to do. That’s the best part of it, for me anyway — the experience of getting to make it under the circumstances we did.”

North Shore News Interviews Amanda Tapping

Amanda Tapping (spring/summer of 2007)

Vancouver’s North Shore News conducted an interview with Stargate star Amanda Tapping earlier this month to talk about her career with the franchise and other endeavors.

Tapping described her character Samantha Carter, “She’s strong, she’s smart, she’s capable, she’s unapologetic for it. I like her because she’s really well-rounded. Even from the start she wasn’t a stereotypical female sci-fi character. She had a lot more going on. And over the course of the years obviously the writers have really rounded her out as a human being and as a woman. And (she was) also just so physical too, which really appealed to me.”

At the time of the interview, Tapping was filming an episode for Season Five of Stargate Atlantis before moving over full-time to her role of Dr. Helen Magnus of Sanctuary at the end of this month. Sanctuary, for which Tapping also serves as executive producer, has been picked up by the Sci Fi Channel and TMN (The Movie Network in Canada) for a 13-episode season. The show had a unique way of presenting a pilot by showing it first on the Internet. “It’s such an interesting model. And I think it is the way that things are going to be going. We were riding the crest of that wave. And I’m not going to say that TV will ever become obsolete because I don’t think that it will, but a lot of people are going to the web for their entertainment. We just wanted to try it out.”

Tapping talked about some of her career history and how it was built up slowly as she started out filming commercials. She has a theatre background and co-founded a comedy troop in Toronto. She guest starred on the Vancouver television circuit until she landed the role of Captain Samantha Carter. As far as future roles, Tapping admitted, “I’d love to do a period drama. Starting out on stage and doing a lot of classic theatre, I’d love to get back to that.”

For the two direct-to-DVD movies, Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum, Tapping was enthused about returning to the sets to work with her SG-1 co-stars. “These people become not just your friends, but your family, and such a part of your life. It was fantastic getting back together for the DVD. It was so much fun.”

Stargate: The Ark of Truth was recently released in North America (Region 1) on March 11. Stargate: Continuum is due for a July release (the date of July 29 is being bandied about, but has not yet been confirmed). Tapping explained that the resolution of the Ori storyline in The Ark of Truth “will allow for future stand-alone movies that don’t have to keep reaching back into the mythology of the show,” according to Rosalind Duane of North Shore News. Tapping told Duane that she’s looking forward to possibly more Stargate features.

Cooper: "Ark" Has "Darker, Edgier Moments"

In Part 4 of MGM’s interview with Robert C. Cooper that covers his new direct-to-DVD movie Stargate: The Ark of Truth, the writer, director, and producer discussed putting a new face on an old enemy. Cooper said, “When it’s just me sitting down with my computer and I have to fill a blank page, I’ll write something I want to see, and hope that there are enough people out there that are fans like me and want to see that stuff!

The IOA recreates the Replicators in "The Ark of Truth"

“I’ve always loved the Replicators. I thought it would be a nostalgic element to the movie that would kind of recall the ‘glory days’ of SG-1,” Cooper admitted.

This generation of the Replicators is brought forth by the International Oversight Advisory (IOA) as a weapon to end the Ori invasion. The blueprint for one of the first-generation bug-like Replicators was stored in the Asgard Core, the legacy given to Earth by the Asgard in the series finale “Unending”. Cooper continued, “A lot of people often criticize the show for not utilizing the technology that’s given to us, so I thought this was a great opportunity. We do kind of have ‘Pandora’s box’ here. The team is smart enough by now — hopefully — not to just go into those things and do whatever they want. But the IOA is not as cautious as that.”

The Replicators nearly wiped out the Asgard, but with SG-1’s help, the nemesis was finally eradicated … or so it was thought (see Season Eight’s “Reckoning Part 2”). Unfortunately, in the movie, the IOA has programmed modifications into the mechanical critters that makes them even more difficult to exterminate.

IOA Representative James Marrick from "The Ark of Truth"

In looking for the IOA’s representative who would be considered the “bad guy” in the movie, Cooper instructed casting director Paul Weber to find someone who could pull off being “the adversary and the opponent for Mitchell” and “someone that can almost look unbeatable. It’s that attitude, to instantly be that guy that you love to hate.” Their man was Currie Graham, and Cooper enjoys the the actor’s great sense of humor, but admits that the tone of the movie didn’t offer him the opportunity to do comedic scenes. Graham’s James Marrick is taken down by the very thing that he sets loose when the IOA ignores SG-1’s suggestions and experience and develops their own plan on how to stop the Ori army.

Marrick’s fate is sealed in a most horrific manner, and Cooper admitted that they would have not presented it at the same graphic level when the SG-1 stories were told in a TV show. “You always want to strike a balance between what people will think is cool and belongs in a movie as opposed to on television but not going so far that it freaks out little kids,” Cooper laughs. But in The Ark of Truth, there were opportunities to present a more graphic story. “There were definitely scenes that I know I would have not wanted to see when I was really young. But hopefully it’s cool that there are some darker, more edgier moments.”

MGM Concludes "Ark" Q&A, Offers "Ark" Merchandise

MGM’s Official Stargate website is continuing to offer fans of the Stargate franchise new interviews, behind-the-scenes videos, contests, sweepstakes, and merchandise. Two of the latest offerings involve Stargate: The Ark of Truth, the first of two direct-to-DVD movies released after the cancellation of the record-breaking TV show, Stargate SG-1.

Cooper’s Ark Q&A

Image of Robert C. Cooper from his Ark Q&A

In Parts 3 and 4 of his Q&A session, writer/director/producer Robert C. Cooper concludes his answers to fans’ questions about his recently released DVD movie. Cooper discusses the difference between the Ascended Beings known as the Ori and their followers, and expands on the power that the Ori had over their Priors and human worshipers. With the knowledge accessible to ascended beings, the Ori instructed their believers to build powerful ships, but at the same time, kept them ignorant of the falsehood of their promise of ascension to their faithful.

Cooper also shared his best and worse moments while filming the movie. He especially enjoyed the helicopter ride that produced inspiring footage. In a combination of best and worst, he told how having to stay to complete the filming of scenes that involved actors who were available for only one day of shooting was exhausting, but allowed for a special kind of bonding with the cast and crew.

The biggest challenge that Cooper had in writing the script for the movie was determining how to balance the story with what had come before. There had to be an assumption made that those who were watching the movie were fairly familiar with the story elements that were presented in the ten-year-old TV show.

Cooper admits he’s not one to list his favorite memories, but he did say that having Dan Castellaneta as a guest star was a highlight (Castellaneta voices the popular Homer character in The Simpsons and guest starred in Season Eight’s “Citizen Joe”). Another highlight from his years on Stargate SG-1 was the rather unique opportunity to film a 200th episode, which he said he also had fun in creating.

This special edition poster (dimensions unknown) is available for shipping to U.S. and international destinations and has a list price of $20.95 USD. It will be available for shipping on April 2, 2008.

According to an article published by Gateworld, the poster was derived from elements of the cover art of composer Joel Goldsmith’s movie soundtrack CD that is coming soon. Writer and director Robert Cooper asked MGM to create the poster to reflect the CD artwork, saying, “That’s the image that I had in my mind when I thought about a one-sheet for the movie.”

"The Ark of Truth": Preliminary DVD Sales Encouraging

Cover art for "Stargate: The Ark of Truth" DVD

The first of two direct-to-DVD movies for continuing the Stargate SG-1 saga, Stargate: The Ark of Truth, hasn’t even been out of the stores a week, but already the preliminary sales information is encouraging, according to Atlantis executive producer and co-showrunner Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog. “To all those of you asking – the preliminary sales performance of The Ark of Truth has taken everyone here at the production offices by surprise. We were hoping for a strong showing, but the response to this point has been nothing short of amazing. Still the #1-selling DVD at Amazon.com the last time I checked, and early reports have it doing extremely well at other outlets. Congratulations to Robert Cooper, the cast, and crew.”

Even during the two movies’ production there was talk of having more movies made to continue the SG-1 portion of the Stargate franchise. Brad Wright, who wrote the second direct-to-DVD movie, Stargate: Continuum, told the Official Stargate Magazine, “There will be Stargate films, that’s inevitable. We’re MGM’s number two franchise after James Bond, so it’s an important franchise and it’s growing still. I don’t see why we can’t do at least one movie a year.”

Wright and Cooper have already pitched the third movie to MGM and Richard Dean Anderson, but the DVD sales figures of the first two movies will most likely have priority in MGM’s decision to continue the series in this new format. “If the movies are well received,” Wright stated, “then the third movie will probably be slotted in after production of the third Stargate series [tentatively entitled Stargate Universe and already pitched to MGM and the Sci Fi Channel for production], or after Stargate Atlantis. But, if one or the other doesn’t go forward, then we’ll probably start shooting our third movie in the spring of 2008.”

No official word has been released as to whether or not the third series has been given the green light, but Stargate Atlantis is currently shooting their fifth season, which is scheduled to be wrapped in the fall this year.

Cooper has been more cautious of recent concerning the form that his next installment of the franchise will take. In an interview conducted for Cinema Spy that was leading up to the release of his movie on DVD in North America, Cooper said, “There’s always the possibility of more Stargate. It’s a question of what is it going to be? Is it going to be more SG-1 straight-to-DVDs? Is the third series going to be first? I’m not really sure. That’s all something that is not entirely my decision.”

S10 Cast of Stargate SG-1

If there is a third movie, will the SG-1 main cast members (Ben Browder, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, Claudia Black, Beau Bridges, and Michael Shanks) be available? It’s obvious that these talented individuals have gone on to other projects and that getting them all back together might be a production challenge, but Cooper seemed positive that it would be possible. “I do think that, for the most part, the main cast of SG-1 is obviously off doing their own thing, whatever that may be, and that if we decide to proceed with more movies, that we would be able to get them all back.”

Recently, there has been much press concerning the creative endeavors of the main cast. Amanda Tapping is producing and starring in Sci Fi Channel’s Sanctuary. She and Stargate creative veterans Damian Kindler and Martin Wood are currently filming the 13-episode order that took Tapping away from her full-time cast position in Season Five of Stargate Atlantis. Ben Browder is currently co-writing a mini-series for the Sci Fi Channel entitled Going Homer and has recently expressed interest in reprising his role as astronaut John Crichton in the new web version of Farscape (10 webisodes are currently being planned).

Business partners Christopher Judge and Michael Shanks are working with MGM on producing a two-hour movie and a one-hour pilot for Judge’s script Rage of Angels. Stargate director Brad Turner is also a co-producer and will be directing. They’re looking at using some of the Stargate filming crew and Bridge Studios near Vancouver this summer, possibly in June. If all goes well, they will have a fall or winter premiere on one of several networks that have expressed interest. Judge has stated, however, that the project will not be on the Sci Fi Channel.

Even with these projects, each of the members of the main cast has been positive about returning to make at least one new SG-1 movie a year. Additionally, Tapping, Judge, Bridges, and Shanks have all stated their willingness to reprise their roles on Stargate Atlantis in Season Five (Tapping and Shanks are confirmed for two episodes each thus far).

With these first encouraging sales figures coming back so soon after The Ark of Truth DVD’s release, it is very possible that the band will be back together soon. To quote Michael Shanks from a recent interview, “Thank you. Thank you for continuing to support the franchise and we’ll look forward to spending more time with you in this year and in the years to come.”

NOTES:
