Stargate Actor Updates

Hey, we’re still here! Here’s a round-up of the various bits of news that have come out recently about our beloved Stargate actors.

In disappointing news, the US network NBC dropped the final two episodes of Saving Hope from its summer schedule. But US fans of Michael Shanks and Erica Durance can watch the episodes on-line at NBC.com’s Saving Hope videos page. Episode 12, “Ride Hard or Go Home” is up now, and we expect the season finale, “The Sleeper Awakes” to be up later this week. The show has been renewed by CTV in Canada for Season 2, to air next summer. We hope the show will be released in the US in some form, if not on a network! It’s a pity that 3 million viewers were not enough to keep it on the air in the states.

Meanwhile Michael Shanks has stayed very busy since Saving Hope Season 1 finished filming. As he has been tweeting (@MichaelShanks), he’s currently in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada filming a bio-pic. He’s playing the lead role of Gordie Howe in the film, called Mr. Hockey. Gordie Howe is a hockey legend, and Michael is clearly thrilled to be playing the iconic role, while using his real hockey skills as well. No word on a US release yet, but we will keep an eye out.

Jewel Staite continues to co-star in The L.A. Complex, which airs on The CW in the US. Martin Gero, a writer and producer on Stargate, is the creator and executive producer of the show, which is set in L.A. and is filmed in both L.A. and Toronto, Canada. There is no word yet on a Season 3. US ratings were low on Tuesdays, but improved when it recently got moved to Mondays. Follow Jewel on twitter here: @JewelStaite

Jason Momoa has been cast as a villain in the upcoming film Wolves, as reported here. He’ll play the evil werewolf patriarch of a town. This project was recently announced, so no word on release date yet. Jason appears in Bullet to the Head with Sylvester Stallone. It’s scheduled for release on 1 February 2013.

Paul McGillion is a new daddy of baby Hugh, born in early August! And he just filmed an episode of Fox’s Fringe. Follow Paul on twitter: @PaulyMcGillion.

Joe Flanigan has a couple of things coming up for release. First is Six Bullets, which he filmed with Jean Claude Van Damme in eastern Europe a while back. The film will be released on DVD in the US this Wednesday September 11 (order from Amazon here). A review of the movie is here, and has this nice thing to say about Joe:

One of the biggest surprises in the movie was Joe Flanigan who was great as the desperate father willing to do anything to get his daughter back. He definitely has the potential to become the next big action star.

Joe’s other role filmed a while back was an episode of Metal Hurlant Chronicles, which appears to be nearing release in France, then possibly in Germany and the UK. There’s no word on a US release yet. You can view a trailer here at Collider.

Many Stargate actors attended DragonCon 2012 in Atlanta last month, including Richard Dean Anderson, Joe Flanigan, Torri Higginson, Cliff Simon, Robert Picardo, Tony Amendola, Peter Kelamis, and probably others we don’t know about! We didn’t hear word of any new projects from the actors, but that could simply be because we’re not watching the right internet spots. Likewise Joe Flanigan, Michael Shanks, Paul McGillion, and others attended the Creation Stargate convention earlier in August, but not much word of new work has gotten out. If you heard of any big news, please let us know!

Get a Sneak Peek of Jewel Staite’s New Show “The L.A. Complex”

Jewel Staite as Raquel Westbrook in THE L.A. COMPLEX (Credit: Stephen Scott /Courtesy of Epitome Pictures Inc. ©Epitome Pictures Inc.)
JEWEL STAITE‘s new show, The L.A. Complex, has its American television premiere next Tuesday, April 24, on The CW, but you can watch the pilot online now! Visit The CW’s Video page for the show!

You can also watch the pilot, “Down in L.A.,” from HULU. Staite tweeted, “Be ahead of the crowd and watch episode 1 of @TheLAComplex before its premiere April 24 at 9pm on the CW. Just do it. http://bit.ly/IOaiXz.” She also provided the link to The Daily Buzz’s article “New CW Television Series: “The L.A. Complex” (Trailer)” so that you could get an idea of what the show is about.

The L.A. Complex has additional Stargate ties as Martin Gero executive produces, writes, and directs this new show that made its debut in Canada earlier this year. Originally six one-hour episodes, the “soapy” drama was given 13 more to fill out its first season. Production on these additional episodes started this month.

The story centers around young people trying to make it big in Hollywood. From its About page at The CW:

Small fish. Big pond. Huge dreams.

Every day, young people with stars in their eyes get off the bus in Los Angeles in search of fame and fortune. THE L.A. COMPLEX centers on a group of aspiring performers pursuing stardom in the City of Angels. Living in an apartment-style motel for displaced dreamers, each dubbed “most likely to succeed,” they all face the challenges and opportunities of a lifetime.

The young hopefuls who have become neighbors, friends and the closest thing any of them have to family, include Connor (Jonathan Patrick Moore, “Neighbours,” “All Saints”), an actor with drop-dead good looks and a dark past, who has just landed a leading role in his first series; Raquel, (Jewel Staite, “Firefly,” “Stargate: Atlantis”), a street-smart actress who had one big hit series, but is worried she’s quickly becoming yesterday’s news; Nick, (Joe Dinicol, “Murdoch Mysteries,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”), a struggling stand-up comedian who is always the best friend and never the boyfriend; Abby, (Cassie Steele, “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” “Relic Hunger”), the naive but determined young actress who gave up a boyfriend back home to stay in L.A. until she gets her big break; Alicia (Chelan Simmons, “Smallville,” “Supernatural”) a sensitive, aspiring dancer who will do whatever it takes to make ends meet; Kaldrick (Andra Fuller, “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” “Entourage”), the superstar Hip-Hop artist who hails from the streets of Oakland, California; and Tariq (Benjamin Charles Watson, “Todd and The Book of Pure Evil,” “The Listener”), the talented aspiring Hip-Hop artist who is hiding a secret.

For every bona fide starlet, there are countless cocktail waitresses. For every true rock star, there are hundreds of musicians playing for tips on the street. For every comedian with a hit sitcom, there are dozens of guys cracking jokes while pouring your coffee. In L.A., your life can change in the blink of an eye. On Monday, you might score some face-time with a big-shot producer. On Wednesday, you might sign that multi-million dollar contract you’ve been dreaming of, but until then, one thing is for sure: every month, the rent is due.

THE L.A. COMPLEX is executive produced by Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn of Epitome Pictures (“Degrassi,” “Instant Star”) and Martin Gero (“Bored to Death,” “Stargate Atlantis”). Directors are Martin Gero and Stefan Brogren. Writers are Martin Gero, Aaron Abrams, Matt Huether, Cole Bastedo, Karen Hill, and Brendan Gall. For Bell Media, Trish Williams is Production Executive; Corrie Coe is Senior Vice-President, Independent Production; Neil Staite is Vice-President and General Manager, Music and Entertainment; Catherine MacLeod is Vice-President, Specialty Channels; Rick Brace is President, Specialty Channels and CTV Production, and Phil King is President, CTV Programming and Sports.

Stargate Briefing: The Alliance, Bridges, Carlyle, Judge, Mallozzi, Momoa, Mullie, Phillips, Staite, Tapping, Wood

Happy New Year!

Here’s hoping that 2012 brings you good health and great happenings!

Stargate, Australian Style

Australia’s getting a Comic-Con of their own this year: Oz Comic-Con! A few Stargate stars have already signed up: JEWEL STAITE and TERYL ROTHERY. They’re hopeful that many more celebrities will be signing up over the next few months in anticipation of the con’s debut on March 31.

Australia was also the home of the developers of the never-released Stargate SG-1: The Alliance video game. They haven’t let termination stop them from creating a trailer featuring their work, however. The Gaming Liberty has extensive coverage of the ill-fated game. Below is the trailer, but The Gaming Liberty article has much, much more.

Beau Bridges Debuts on Broadway January 3

BEAU BRIDGES will be making his Broadway singing debut as corporate tycoon J.B. Biggley in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” to a sold-out audience on January 3 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Bridges got lessons from voice and dance coach Ben Toth.

In other Bridges news, his film Outrun has been given an August 24 release date.

Update on Robert Carlyle

ROBERT CARLYLE’s Once Upon a Time returns from the holiday hiatus on Sunday, January 8, at 8/7c on ABC. He’s made an impression on many in his dual roles of Rumpelstiltskin and Mr. Gold. As noted in ScienceFiction.com writer Jessica Naki’s article “‘Once Upon A Time’: Why Robert Carlyle Won,” some people believe that Carlyle came out a winner after Stargate Universe’s untimely termination after only two seasons.

Mary Seah’s Today Online’s article “Big Stars, Small Screen,” has a few of Carlyle’s thoughts about his American television career:

Robert Carlyle, who currently stars in the series Once Upon A Time, was of the same mind [as Sean Bean’s that the snobbery of whether one was a film star versus a television star has diminished]. “I have always wanted to do a bit of US TV because in the past five to 10 years they’ve raised the bar incredibly. Probably when 24 came along – that changed everything. And then the advent of cable TV,” he said, adding that developments in communications technology also helped change the game. “In the past … there was still an attitude that if you did film, you didn’t do TV, and vice versa. That’s all gone now. I mean, look at it – you can watch movies on the Internet, on the phone, whatever. You don’t have to go to the cinema to see a movie.”

Christopher Judge’s Projects

CHRISTOPHER JUDGE co-stars in the last installment of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight triology, The Dark Knight Rises. The movie premieres July 20.

Judge is currently filming To Have and to Hold. The movie has had several filming locations, including Virginia, Cayman Islands, and the Bahamas. Judge co-stars with Aiden Turner (“All My Children”), Kelly Greyson (“Alone Yet Not Alone”), Rusty Joiner (“Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story), Mark Dacascos (Hawaii Five-0) and John Rhys-Davies (“Lord of the Rings: Return of the King”). A release date has not yet been announced, but is set for this year.

Stallone About Momoa: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a guy move like this”

Catch a video interview with Bullet to the Head star Sylvester Stallone at Best Movies Ever News & Reviews as he talks about the physical demands of this action film that co-stars JASON MOMOA. The legendary action star praises Momoa’s moves in their fire-ax fighting sequence. Bullet to the Head is being released April 13 to American movie theaters.

A brief interview about his secret weapon has been published at Zap2It Blog:’Celebrity Cook-Off’s’ Lou Diamond Phillips: ‘My new secret weapon: homemade Wild Turkey bourbon barbecue sauce’.

Interview with Martin Wood

MARTIN WOOD directed lots and lots of Stargate, and now he’s a producer, writer, and director for the hit sci-fi show Sanctuary, which stars AMANDA TAPPING and was created by Stargate vet DAMIAN KINDLER. Steve Eramo of The Morton Report got some time to talk with Wood about his career, which spans over 20 years, and the challenges he faced during Season 4 of Sanctuary. Although incredibly busy with Sanctuary, Wood had the opportunity to direct in Luke Perry’s Goodnight for Justice television movie series.

Living under an assumed identity in central California, ex-getaway driver “Charlie Bronson” (Shepard) agrees to break the rules of his Witness Protection and drive his sexy girlfriend (Kristen Bell) to Los Angeles so that she can land her dream job. When the authorities and his former gang (led by Bradley Cooper) learn he is back behind the wheel, they hit the road to chase him down. Desperate to stay one step ahead, Charlie upgrades to an even faster car as the story shifts into high gear; cranking up the horse power and increasing the speed to make it to Southern California in time and, more importantly, in one piece.

Stargate for Halloween?

Visit Hatboro-Horsham Patch for a photo gallery of the home of Glenn Fitzgerald of Hatboro, Pennsylvania, who has placed a Stargate among his decorations for Halloween!

Fitzgerald, on the other hand, says his large display began about a dozen years ago with one light-up Frankenstein piece that sat in his front yard.

When his brother-in-law, Brad Richardson, an Emmy-award winning Hollywood set designer, moved into his house 11 years ago, Fitzgerald’s display really took on a whole new life.

Featuring hundreds of movie quality props including a 20-foot-tall spider, a Stargate (from the film “Stargate”) and a huge crocodile, many of the one-of-a-kind objects are made by Fitzgerald and Richardson.

“There is tremendous detail in the props,” Fitzgerald said. “People are always discovering new details.”

Stargate Briefing: Bridges, Judge, Mallozzi, Mullie, Nemec, Picardo, Staite

Beau Bridges to Be Honored This Weekend

BEAU BRIDGES is to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLiFF), which began today, October 21. This news from Sun Sentinel:

Bridges, son of the late Lloyd and older brother of Oscar winner Jeff, will be at the 26th annual event Oct. 23 for a Cinema Paradiso screening of his new film,”Don’t Fade Away,” starring Ryan Kwanten (“True Blood”), Mischa Barton and rapper Ja Rule.

FLiFF will present Bridges with a Lifetime Achievement Award, a ceremony highlighted by a clip reel retrospective of his screen performances, just prior to the 5:45 p.m. showing of “Don’t Fade Away.” An audience Q&A follows the movie.

In “Don’t Fade Away,” Bridges portrays a fatally ill family patriarch whose estranged son (Kwanten) puts his poisonous L.A. music career on hold to return to North Carolina to care for his father.

Filming Projects for Christopher Judge

A recent article about the filming of the movie To Have and To Hold mentions that the cast includes CHRISTOPHER JUDGE and a few other familiar Stargate vets, including MARK DACASCOS (Tyre, SGA). This is the first time we’ve seen Judge’s name in association with the film, which is set during the 1600s during the early settlements of Virginia. From Village News Online: Filming concludes at Henricus park:

According to the film’s location manager Tom Trigo, “To Have and To Hold,” which is an adaptation of a book published by the same name in 1900 by Virginian author Mary Johnston, is a family-based romance story – with a twist of action and adventure – set in the Virginia Colony as it expands westward. Though much of the film is shot in Henricus, its setting takes place mostly in Jamestown; however, scenes will be shot along the James River, as well as in or near various historical plantations and farms in the region.

Trigo, a native of Virginia, had been scouting Henricus for several years in his search for the perfect location to shoot the film. When he first read the script he knew Henricus was the ideal place to shoot.

Make sure to visit the article for more about the filming at Henricus Historical Park.

Another movie that Judge is cast in is also moving its filming location for its last few weeks of principal photography: The Dark Knight Rises. From Mania Beyond Entertainment: Dark Knight Rises in NY:

Warner Bros. Pictures and director Christopher Nolan have one more city to take on before they wrap up the production for The Dark Knight Rises. Cue the Frank Sinatra or Jay-Z songs because New York is where Nolan and his crew will be end their journey, beginning production in the Big Apple on October 29. The last leg of shooting is expected to last around 14 days and the Los Angeles Times’ 24 Frames reports that the “Occupy Wall Street” may even be used in some scenes though it won’t be a part of the storyline.

The Dark Knight Rises is currently scheduled to open July 20, 2012.

Another Reunion for Robert Picardo

Recently we reported that ROBERT PICARDO had a reunion with his Star Trek: Voyager co-star Kate Mulgrew via his guest starring in her new Adult Swim series NTSF:SD:SUV. We’ve got a little bit of information about Picardo’s episode from TV Line:

Dana Delany will reunite with her former China Beach costar Robert Picardo in a Season 2 episode of Body of Proof, TVLine has confirmed. The actress tweeted a picture of herself and Picardo, who will play an Italian-American restaurant owner, on the set with the message, “Me and Bob Picardo, together again! So happy.”
