Actor and Stargate News

More updates from the past couple of months, in case you missed them elsewhere on the web!

In exciting and mysterious news, both Michael Shanks and Amanda Tapping have tweeted that they’re voicing their SG-1 characters for an SG-1 game or app. Michael tweeted: Rumors are true: voicing new SG1 app game. #stargateUnleashed #epicness#badassery pic.twitter.com/OMOfCTS2 We haven’t found other news about the app, but this would be at least the 3rd attempt at a Stargate game, and we hope it finally comes to pass!

Michael’s show, Saving Hope, has been renewed for 18 episodes for Season 2. It will air in Canada and has been sold to foreign markets, while as of now it hasn’t been picked up by a US network. NBC canceled it just before the end of its first season run, but perhaps another network will pick it up for next summer.

Ming Na has been cast as a lead in Joss Whedon’s upcoming super-hero Avengers’ spin-off series, S.H.I.E.L.D. This is a huge deal, as the show is highly anticipated in the US markets at least. We give Ming our hearty congratulations!

Paul McGillion appeared in an episode of Fringe a few weeks ago. Try to catch it if you missed it — it’s called “The Recordist”. Paul was also recently filming another episode of Once Upon a Time, presumably to reprise his role as the Knave of Hearts. Keep an eye out for that one.

Joe Flanigan recently traveled to Austin, Texas to film a pilot for a possible new series on the Lifetime network called The Secret Lives of Wives. He would play the husband of Reed, who is played by Salli Richardson, who co-starred on Syfy’s Eureka.

Ben Browder will appear in an episode of the hit series Arrow. More details here.

Brian J. Smith tweeted that he’ll be appearing in the Tennessee Williams play The Glass Menagerie with Zachary Quinto and others, in a Boston, MA production. More details here at Playbill. He will also be in one episode of the new Syfy series Defiance.

Louis Ferreira appeared in four episodes of the second season of The L.A. Complex. Fans should look for the show on-line or hopefully soon on DVD.

Finally, Stargate writer-producer Carl Binder will be heading back up to Vancouver, this time to be the show-runner for Hallmark’s new series Cedar Cove, starring Andie MacDowell.

Brian J. Smith Visits Warehouse 13 Tonight

SGU’s BRIAN J. SMITH is making a guest appearance on tonight’s episode of Syfy’s Warehouse 13. The episode, entitled “Personal Effects,” airs at 9/8c.

In “Personal Effects,” there are artifacts from Sykes’ arsenal that the team needs to track down. From invisible man to weather control, the use of these artifacts brings about several degrees of chaos.

Brian J. Smith Cast in Broadway Play

Brian J. Smith in MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (PBS Photos)Brian J. Smith, who played Lt. Scott in Stargate Universe, has won a role in a new play debuting on Broadway in New York in April. From this announcement:

Tony Award nominee Stephen Kunken (Enron), Grace Gummer (Arcadia) and Brian J. Smith (Come Back, Little Sheba) will join previously announced John Lithgow, Margaret Colin and Boyd Gaines for the Broadway world premiere of David Auburn’s The Columnist, Manhattan Theatre Club announced.

The movie is about a famous columnist, played by John Lithgow. It’s not clear what role Brian will play, but he has tweeted about it with great excitement:

Back to NY tomorrow to start work on a play that has kept me sleepless with excitement for months. One hint: Broadway!!!!

Great first day of rehearsal. Damn this cast is impressive! Amazing design team too – I peed a little during the set designer’s presentation

Public performances will begin at the Manhattan Theater Club on April 4, with the official opening night on April 25. It will run into June. We hope some Stargate fans will go see it and report back to us!

ARMIN SHIMERMAN had to cancel due to his receiving an acting job.

TONY TODD and DON STARK will be at the Steel City Con this weekend at the Monroeville Convention Center, in Monroeville, Pennsylvania.

Actually, we’ve got more on this one: She’s playing Amy in the Supernatural episode “The Girl Next Door,” which is airing third in the upcoming seventh season. The episode is currently scheduled to premiere Friday, October 7, at 9/7c on The CW.

MICHAEL SHANKS got a brief mention in Joseph Mallozzi’s Weblog: “Also, heard from Michael Shanks and he is shooting a film in Stages 5 and 6, the former homes of Stargate Command and Atlantis.”

Brian J. Smith Joins "Gossip Girl" as Chef Max

Brian J. SmithIt has been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter (THR) that Stargate star Brian J. Smith (Lt. Matthew Scott) will be joining Gossip Girl when it premieres this fall on Monday, September 26, at 9/8c on The CW.

According to THR, Smith will be playing “an aspiring chef named Max.” According to TV Line, who broke the news, Smith’s character may be a new love interest for Serena (Blake Lively) as both actors are shooting scenes that take place in Los Angeles.

Gossip Girl will be returning for its fifth season in September. Wikipedia summarizes the show: “Gossip Girl is an American teen drama series based on the book series of the same name written by Cecily von Ziegesar. The series was created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, and premiered on The CW on September 19, 2007. Narrated by the omniscient yet unseen blogger “Gossip Girl”, voiced by Kristen Bell, the series revolves around the lives of privileged young adults on Manhattan’s Upper East Side in New York City.”

SGU S2 EpilogueSTARGATE UNIVERSE on Sky One at 8 PM with “Epilogue”: Destiny arrives at Novus, an abandoned planet caught in the throes of seismic destruction. Curiosity gets the better of the crew though, which has dire consequences.

Due to the Memorial Day holiday, AMANDA TAPPING‘s Sanctuary will not be on tonight, but will return to Syfy at 10 PM ET next week.

From PR-USA.net: “Documentary Channel (DOC) commemorates U.S. soldiers with a line up of outstanding military themed documentaries in a two-day tribute to Memorial Day on Monday, May 30 and Tuesday, May 31. Never seen before on television, the two-hour theatrical version of “Operation Homecoming” airs Monday, May 30, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT). […] The Oscar nominated “Operation Homecoming” is a unique documentary that explores the firsthand accounts of American troops through their written words, and offers a profound window into the human side of the war in Iraq. “Operation Homecoming” evolved out of a National Endowment for the Arts project that gathered the writing of soldiers and their families who have participated in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. It follows the hero Alec Mason (Patrick) and his son Jake (Smith) as they search for Jake’s sister Lyra (Tamzin Merchant) only to find that she has become their enemy twelve years after her kidnapping.

InnerSPACE Stargate Special to Air Tuesday, May 10

Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi just posted in his weblog, “…I hung around to do a quickie interview for Canada’s Space which will follow up Tuesday night’s series finale, Gauntlet, with a special Stargate-laden installment of Innerspace. From what I hear, they got A LOT of interviews with Stargate personalities – David Blue, David Hewlett, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, Louis Ferreira, Alaina Huffman, Brian J. Smith, and Jewel Staite (to name a few) – who’ll be talking about the franchise and its fans. Don’t miss it!”

Canada’s Spacecast airs Stargate Universe (their SGU page) at 10 PM ET and InnerSPACE follows directly at 11 PM ET (their InnerSPACE page). All of the Stargate shows have enjoyed impressive viewer numbers, and currently, SGU is Space’s “most-watched series.”

“Gauntlet” will be a cliffhanger, unfortunately, which Mallozzi described as being in the same category of cliffhanger as SG-1’s “Camelot,” SGA’s “The Siege II,” and SGU’s “Incursion II,” and gave this “fair warning” about the conclusion of the Stargate franchise “as we know it”: “Gauntlet, in particular, is very touching and its conclusion will no doubt you leave you…among many other things…frustrated, incredulous, outraged, offended, annoyed, vexed, saddened, distressed, bitter, aghast, irritated, unsatisfied, pissed-off, melancholy, miserable, confused, furious, dejected, riled, shocked, heartsick, angry, surprised, exasperated, indignant, enraged, despondent, bewildered, dismayed, incensed, stunned, and grief-stricken.”

Hopefully, seeing the Stargate stars from all three shows afterwards will help ease the Canadian fans’ pain.

May 7		 BEAU BRIDGES and daughter Emily will be in Studio City, California, today at 2 PM to sign their published play Acting: The First Six Lessons. Here’s a portion of the announcement from Playbill: “Beau Bridges and his daughter Emily will appear at Samuel French Bookstore in Studio City, CA, May 7 at 2 PM to sign copies of their published play, Acting: The First Six Lessons, and partake in a reading and Q&A session. […] Samuel French Bookstore is located at 11963 Ventura Blvd., Studio City, CA.” The play was well received, and if you’re interested in the last performance they had, visit the Theatre West website for images and reviews.

May 8		 BEAU BRIDGES will be returning as Nick Brody in the season finale of Brothers & Sisters tonight at 10:01 PM ET on ABC. The synopsis: “In the fifth-season finale, a surprise guest shows up at Sarah and Luc’s wedding; and Kitty faces a tough decision.”

Actor and Crew Updates

  • Not too long ago, JOE FLANIGAN mentioned in an interview, “I separated my shoulder in a mountain biking accident. I was coming down a single track trail at a furious speed – I just got brand new handle bars that were extra long – they snagged a branch and they just kind of threw me over and I landed on my back. I actually feel pretty damn lucky that it’s just an AC separation and not something more serious.” He went on with the injury to the Vancouver Stargate Con, and then he finally had the surgery on April 27. All is well, as the actor kept his fans updated on his Twitter (including providing a picture of him in his hospital bed), joking that on the day after, “My new breasts look great.”
  • MARK SAVELA did an interview with Sci Fi and TV Talk Blog about his prospect pilot Echoes. This production has several former Stargate cast and crew involved. They filmed a 13-minute prospect piece from the two-part pilot script, hoping to use it as a pitch for the creation of a new series. This crew is very well put together as they transfer their many years with Stargate into their own production. Echoes features JENNIFER SPENCE and MIKE DOPUD in leading roles.
  • BRIAN J. SMITH did an interview with Redeye Chicago/Show Patrol about his upcoming Syfy movie Red Faction: Origins. Smith declares that this movie is not going to be your typical “MOW” and that “It’s definitely quality and it has really, really smart minds behind it.” Stargate alum ROBERT PATRICK also stars. Red Faction: Origins premieres Saturday, June 4, at 9 PM ET.
  • CHRISTOPHER JUDGE and JEWEL STAITE are scheduled to be at the Tulsa Trek Expo in June, according to Tulsa World.
  • JASON MOMOA has been interviewed a lot recently, covering his roles of Khal Drogo in HBO’s Game of Thrones (currently airing on Sunday nights) and of Conan in the upcoming Conan the Barbarian movie (coming August 19).   • MICHAEL SHANKS did a video interview while he was in France a few weekends ago for the SciFi15 convention. Solutions LJ has the embedded video in which Shanks discusses Stargate and his most recent projects.
  • MING-NA is back in Vancouver shooting her recurring role in Syfy’s Eureka. Her new role is Alice Wen, a senator who arrives in Eureka to handle a sensitive matter within Global Dynamics.
