STARGATE SG-1 UNLEASHED Gives Fans New Adventures for Original Team

The original SG-1 team is back for another adventure! This time in Stargate SG-1 Unleashed, a tablet game to be released on iOS and Android platforms. “Episode 1” is slated for release this coming March. Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, and Amanda Tapping have all tweeted about doing voice work for the game (we’re hoping that Christopher Judge recorded for the game, too, so that the original team is reunited once more)!

Embedded below is the teaser. What do you make of it? Will you be playing this adventure game from MGM and Arkalis Interactive? What season do you think is the setting and who is that Goa’uld that is threatening Earth? Make sure to register to leave your comments below (if you’re on LiveJournal, we’ve got a thread going there as well).

More Actor Updates!

Thanks to @Campylobacter for a few reminders, plus some others things we missed, here are a few more Stargate actor updates!

Richard Dean Anderson is reprising his role as MacGyver in a set of three webisodes to promote the Citan van built by the iconic Mercedes Benz. Early photos and a trailer are available at the official website. RDA is on twitter: @andersonrdean

Claudia Black will guest star in an upcoming two-part episode of Syfy’s series Haven. A few hints about her role are here at Zap2it.

Ben Browder is guest-starring in the next episode of Dr. Who, airing this weekend in the US (BBC America), UK (BBC), and Canada. Ben gave an interview about his experiences to SFX here. Details about the episode (a Western!) and a trailer are here at TV Guide. Check your local listings!

J.R. Bourne (Martouf on SG-1) has won a recurring role on the US ABC hit drama, Revenge. From this article, “Bourne will play Kenny, a wealthy man with “rough edges” who works to conceal his true nature.” J.R. is also a regular in Teen Wolf, which airs on MTV in the US.

And of course, in case anyone didn’t know, Robert Carlyle continues his lead role in the US ABC series Once Upon A Time. Season 2 premieres September 30 in the US. Robert is on twitter as well: @robertcarlyle_

Stargate Actor Updates

Hey, we’re still here! Here’s a round-up of the various bits of news that have come out recently about our beloved Stargate actors.

In disappointing news, the US network NBC dropped the final two episodes of Saving Hope from its summer schedule. But US fans of Michael Shanks and Erica Durance can watch the episodes on-line at NBC.com’s Saving Hope videos page. Episode 12, “Ride Hard or Go Home” is up now, and we expect the season finale, “The Sleeper Awakes” to be up later this week. The show has been renewed by CTV in Canada for Season 2, to air next summer. We hope the show will be released in the US in some form, if not on a network! It’s a pity that 3 million viewers were not enough to keep it on the air in the states.

Meanwhile Michael Shanks has stayed very busy since Saving Hope Season 1 finished filming. As he has been tweeting (@MichaelShanks), he’s currently in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada filming a bio-pic. He’s playing the lead role of Gordie Howe in the film, called Mr. Hockey. Gordie Howe is a hockey legend, and Michael is clearly thrilled to be playing the iconic role, while using his real hockey skills as well. No word on a US release yet, but we will keep an eye out.

Jewel Staite continues to co-star in The L.A. Complex, which airs on The CW in the US. Martin Gero, a writer and producer on Stargate, is the creator and executive producer of the show, which is set in L.A. and is filmed in both L.A. and Toronto, Canada. There is no word yet on a Season 3. US ratings were low on Tuesdays, but improved when it recently got moved to Mondays. Follow Jewel on twitter here: @JewelStaite

Jason Momoa has been cast as a villain in the upcoming film Wolves, as reported here. He’ll play the evil werewolf patriarch of a town. This project was recently announced, so no word on release date yet. Jason appears in Bullet to the Head with Sylvester Stallone. It’s scheduled for release on 1 February 2013.

Paul McGillion is a new daddy of baby Hugh, born in early August! And he just filmed an episode of Fox’s Fringe. Follow Paul on twitter: @PaulyMcGillion.

Joe Flanigan has a couple of things coming up for release. First is Six Bullets, which he filmed with Jean Claude Van Damme in eastern Europe a while back. The film will be released on DVD in the US this Wednesday September 11 (order from Amazon here). A review of the movie is here, and has this nice thing to say about Joe:

One of the biggest surprises in the movie was Joe Flanigan who was great as the desperate father willing to do anything to get his daughter back. He definitely has the potential to become the next big action star.

Joe’s other role filmed a while back was an episode of Metal Hurlant Chronicles, which appears to be nearing release in France, then possibly in Germany and the UK. There’s no word on a US release yet. You can view a trailer here at Collider.

Many Stargate actors attended DragonCon 2012 in Atlanta last month, including Richard Dean Anderson, Joe Flanigan, Torri Higginson, Cliff Simon, Robert Picardo, Tony Amendola, Peter Kelamis, and probably others we don’t know about! We didn’t hear word of any new projects from the actors, but that could simply be because we’re not watching the right internet spots. Likewise Joe Flanigan, Michael Shanks, Paul McGillion, and others attended the Creation Stargate convention earlier in August, but not much word of new work has gotten out. If you heard of any big news, please let us know!

Reminder: Richard Dean Anderson in "Raising Hope" Tonight

Tonight!

RICHARD DEAN ANDERSON

*Guest starring with daughter Wylie*
RAISING HOPE posterRAISING HOPE
“Jimmy and the Kid”
Tuesdays on FOX 9:30/8:30c

RICHARD DEAN ANDERSON and daughter WYLIE are the guest stars tonight in the Raising Hope episode “Jimmy and the Kid.”

Tune in at 9:31 PM ET (time according to TV Guide) for Wylie’s big television acting debut in this story: “A 13-year-old’s obsession with Sabrina drives Jimmy nuts; Burt and Virginia wonder how to get Maw Maw’s gold tooth back—after she swallows it.”

RDAnderson.com adds more information about RDA’s and Wylie’s characters: “Richard plays a protective father who mistakenly believes that Jimmy (Lucas Neff) is hitting on his daughter, played by 13-year-old Wylie.”

Raising Hope is a single-camera comedy about not-quite-ready-for-the-task single father Jimmy doing the best he can to raise his daughter Hope with the support of his parents Burt and Virginia, his grandmother Maw Maw, and his friend Sabrina. The show’s website at Fox.com includes preview clips, extras, and past episodes in case you missed them.

Richard Dean Anderson and Daughter Guest Star in "Raising Hope"

OK standing in line 4 'premiere/screening' of 'Grownups' Stil... on Twitpic
Richard Dean Anderson and daughter Wylie at a movie premiere in June 2010.

Stargate star Richard Dean Anderson has updated his official website readers on a new project that he and his daughter Wylie are doing together: guest starring roles in Raising Hope:

I wanted you to know, first, that Wylie and I have been inked to appear, together, mind you, in an episode of “Raising Hope.” We are both very excited.

Wylie Anderson spent the summer in a camp for theatrical kids, and it looks like she’s well on her way in following in her father’s footsteps. She just recently made her father beam with pride on Twitter: “If you’re close by: The Music Man is playing @ CSUN (Cal. State University@Northridge.) W.Anderson shines in the chorus! Proud Dad, sighs…” Earlier this summer, Anderson wrote about her previous stage appearances:

For some time now I’ve been staying tight with Wylie. She’s had the lead in two productions, (“Phantom Tollbooth” and “Little Women”). And, my God!! She shone! She played Beth in “Women,” so things get pretty heavy for the actress playing her. She gets sick, and dies, ultimately. Wylie’s getting very close to being able to tap the emotional coffers she’s been adding to over the years. She made a dozen people in the audience weep openly, very audible sniffling for minutes after the death scene.

She just might have ‘it’. She certainly stands out when she shares the stage with others… she’s definitely got ‘something’ that gets her close to that…. space, that heart, the focus, intelligence, nerve…. Time will tell.

Raising Hope is an Emmy-nominated comedy show that just finished its first season on FOX. The second season will premiere Tuesday, September 20, at 9:30/8:30c. We currently don’t have the date for the Andersons’ episode, but will announce it in our Coming Soon feature when we know.

More about Raising Hope from their About page:

RAISING HOPE is a new single-camera family comedy from Emmy Award winner Greg Garcia that follows the Chance family as they find themselves adding an unexpected new member into their household.

At 23 years old, JIMMY CHANCE (Lucas Neff) is going nowhere in life. He skims pools for a living, parties every night and still lives at home with his family, including his MAW MAW (Cloris Leachman); his mother, VIRGINIA (Martha Plimpton) and his father, BURT (Garret Dillahunt).

Jimmy’s life takes a drastic turn when a chance romantic encounter with LUCY (guest star Bijou Phillips) goes awry once he discovers she is a wanted felon. Months later, when Jimmy pays a visit to the local prison, he learns Lucy is pregnant with their baby, and after she gives birth, he is charged with raising their daughter.

Select Your Top Stargate Icons

SFX Magazine did a survey to find out who their readers’ sci-fi favorites were, and the results show that many of their readers are Stargate fans!

SFX Magazine’s Top 100 Sci-Fi Icons: Stargate Icons

99. Nicholas Rush

Nicholas Rush in MALICEA recent addition to the Stargate saga, Dr. Nicholas Rush, portrayed by Scotsman Robert Carlyle, is the type of character that you don’t know whether to love or to hate. Always thinking ahead several moves—he is a chess player, after all—Rush saw the discovery of Destiny as one of the most significant events in human history—and he had a major part in that discovery. His goals were often out of sync with the rest of the Icarus Project’s personnel, but he was depended upon to get them through the tough spots, and he often did.

95. Jack O’Neill

Jack O'Neill in ONE FALSE STEPHe was the first to walk through the Stargate in the movie and has been with us ever since to watch our backs! A Sci-Fi Icon list would not be complete without him. We got to love him as Colonel Jack O’Neill, leader of the flagship team SG-1, and now he’s all grown up to become Lt. General Jack O’Neill, commander of Homeworld Security. As the only military man who could say he’s been there and done it all, Jack has always been there for his people. Portrayed by TV legend Richard Dean Anderson, we cannot imagine anyone else filling Jack’s boots!

63. Daniel Jackson

Daniel Jackson in THE PEGASUS PROJECTIt’s only appropriate that the man who opened the Stargate and made regular travel through it possible should be the top representative of Stargate in the poll. Dr. Daniel Jackson might have been a “dweeb,” but he certainly knew his stuff and learned how to adapt quickly to his changing role as the expert on human cultures that had been transplanted across the galaxy by the Goa’uld. And after the defeat of the System Lords, Jackson continued to show how closely linked he was to the Stargate by becoming the foremost expert on the Ancients, the builders of the Stargates, Destiny, and Atlantis. Ever resourceful and quick-thinking, Daniel’s ability to solve riddles and puzzles, as well as negotiate treaties, made him Stargate Command’s most respected civilian employee the military had ever had and his actor Michael Shanks one of the Internet’s most closely followed television actors.

Our Own Stargate Icon Poll

Admittedly, we don’t have the same readership as SFX, but we thought that it might be fun to choose our own Icons, limited to our main Stargate characters. We can have another poll for Top Villain, Top Secondary, etc., later—just let us know—but right now we’re concentrating on the main cast of characters. Choose your Top 5 here:

Actor and Crew Updates

  • Not too long ago, JOE FLANIGAN mentioned in an interview, “I separated my shoulder in a mountain biking accident. I was coming down a single track trail at a furious speed – I just got brand new handle bars that were extra long – they snagged a branch and they just kind of threw me over and I landed on my back. I actually feel pretty damn lucky that it’s just an AC separation and not something more serious.” He went on with the injury to the Vancouver Stargate Con, and then he finally had the surgery on April 27. All is well, as the actor kept his fans updated on his Twitter (including providing a picture of him in his hospital bed), joking that on the day after, “My new breasts look great.”
  • MARK SAVELA did an interview with Sci Fi and TV Talk Blog about his prospect pilot Echoes. This production has several former Stargate cast and crew involved. They filmed a 13-minute prospect piece from the two-part pilot script, hoping to use it as a pitch for the creation of a new series. This crew is very well put together as they transfer their many years with Stargate into their own production. Echoes features JENNIFER SPENCE and MIKE DOPUD in leading roles.
  • BRIAN J. SMITH did an interview with Redeye Chicago/Show Patrol about his upcoming Syfy movie Red Faction: Origins. Smith declares that this movie is not going to be your typical “MOW” and that “It’s definitely quality and it has really, really smart minds behind it.” Stargate alum ROBERT PATRICK also stars. Red Faction: Origins premieres Saturday, June 4, at 9 PM ET.
  • CHRISTOPHER JUDGE and JEWEL STAITE are scheduled to be at the Tulsa Trek Expo in June, according to Tulsa World.
  • JASON MOMOA has been interviewed a lot recently, covering his roles of Khal Drogo in HBO’s Game of Thrones (currently airing on Sunday nights) and of Conan in the upcoming Conan the Barbarian movie (coming August 19). These interviews are indexed in our SOLUTIONS LJ here: Conan Movie and Game of Thrones.
  • MICHAEL SHANKS did a video interview while he was in France a few weekends ago for the SciFi15 convention. Solutions LJ has the embedded video in which Shanks discusses Stargate and his most recent projects.
  • MING-NA is back in Vancouver shooting her recurring role in Syfy’s Eureka. Her new role is Alice Wen, a senator who arrives in Eureka to handle a sensitive matter within Global Dynamics.

News Flashes and Brief Follow-Ups

  • SG-1 in 'Window of Opportunity' in Season FourFranchise – With news that the Stargate franchise as we know it will end in a few weeks with the airing of SGU’s final episode “Gauntlet,” executive producer Joseph Mallozzi has begun to look back on his time with the productions, starting in Season Four of Stargate SG-1. He’s posting a series of entries dedicated to each season that he and writing partner Paul Mullie were in Vancouver, a place that they thought they would only be for a couple of years! Start reading his “Days of Stargate Past” in his April 22nd and April 23rd entries. Sadly, these reminiscent entries were sparked by the fact that they will start “de-rigging” Stage 5: “Stage 5, as you may or may not know, was home to Stargate: Universe’s Icarus base but, for many, many years before that, it held the standing sets for Stargate: SG-1: the SGC corridors, the infirmary, the control room, the briefing, Hammond’s office (later occupied by O’Neill, then Landry) and, of course, the gate room. Sad times indeed.”

Destiny in INCURSION PART 2 (MGM/About.com)

  • Franchise – Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi updated his readers on the last tasks that he and others are doing to complete the final episode of SGU, “Gauntlet.” As is typical with most Stargate season finales, this episode ends on a cliffhanger. “It’s a spectacular yet poignant season ender,” Mallozzi wrote after watching the finale’s Day 1 Mix. “Hopefully, by the time its airs, we’ll have definite word on a potential movie or two. If it’s a go and fans can look forward to a proper end to Destiny’s mission, then Gauntlet will certainly set the stage for a grand conclusion. If, on the other hand, things don’t pan out and Gauntlet does turn out to be the bittersweet finale, fans will be thrilled, touched, heartbroken – and left to wonder what could have been.” Once the finale is “in the can,” what will become of the franchise? Mallozzi once again reassured his readers, “The sets are still standing as Brad and co. await word on possible movies. As for the writers/producers – some have moved on, some stand ready to start work on a continuation of the storyline should they receive the green light.”
