Catching Up with Robert Picardo

MGM Robert Picardo

SCI FI WIRE talked with Stargate star Robert Picardo about his pivotal role in the new television series Persons Unknown. The first season consisted of 13 episodes, and Picardo played such a pivotal role in the show that he couldn’t name his character without giving away the whole story!

Picardo explained the premise, “It’s reminiscent of the classic Patrick McGoohan series The Prisoner. It’s about these people who are strangely abducted and held against their will and are apparently being studied or manipulated. It’s a very exotic, paranoid premise for a show.”

Other actors include Alan Ruck, Chadwick Boseman, Gerald Kyd, Kate Lang Johnson and Kandyse McClure. Picardo revealed that the show is from Chris McQuarrie, who wrote The Usual Suspects, and is executive produced by Remi Aubuchon, who also wrote the Caprica pilot along with Ron Moore.

Right now, the show, which was filmed in Mexico, has been sold to countries in South America and Europe, but hasn’t been picked up by a US network yet. Picardo said that if the show gets a second season, he’ll be a recurring cast member.

In the meantime, you can catch Picardo in one of the final three episodes filmed for Pushing Daisies, which was not renewed for another season. His episode “Water and Power” is due to be shown on the UK’s ITV1 this Friday, April 24, and on ABC in the US on June 6. Check your local listings for exact times.

Also, make sure to visit MGM: Message from Picardo to watch a brief video message from the actor who appreciates the welcome he received once his Stargate character Richard Woolsey joined the regular cast for the final season of Stargate Atlantis.

According to Stargate Actor Appearances, Picardo is due to make several public appearances over the coming months, the next upcoming being FedCon XVIII from May 1-3, 2009, in Bonn, Germany.

Vancouver Con Teaser Pics

Your intrepid Solutions reporter has been on the scene in Vancouver all week for the 2009 Creation Vancouver Stargate Convention. In addition to sampling of of actor pictures below, stay tuned for many filming location images and our usual complete, illustrated con report. All the guests have been wonderful; they’ve kept up with the very long hours even better than some fans, who’ve been seen crawling to their rooms to rest or wait out the autograph lines. There hasn’t been major news to come out of the con so far, but plenty of smaller tidbits that we’ll share soon.

The actors have no information about the Stargate Atlantis movie. Hopefully something will be revealed by Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper tomorrow. Stargate Universe remains strictly under wraps, and the set visit this year did not include any of the SGU ship sets. The Atlantis sets are standing, and the SGC set could be restored with two weeks of work, according to producer N. John Smith.

Update on McGillion, Picardo Projects

Paul McGillion

Stargate star Paul McGillion has landed a spot in FOX’s hit action drama 24, according to his “Official Online Resume Site”. At the time of the December 1 report, McGillion was still filming a late-season episode of the new season (seven) that will be making its premiere Sunday, January 11, 2009, at 8 PM ET/PT. Visit the FOX website for more information about “Day 7”, which is taking place several years after last season’s “Day 6”. We’ll post an update as soon as more information is available for McGillion’s episode and part.

Robert Picardo (MGM)

Stargate star Robert Picardo filmed an episode of ABC’s Pushing Daisies, according to Picardo himself when he “checked in” with Stargate Atlantis executive producer Joseph Mallozzi way back on October 23. No information is currently available as to which episode of this now-not-renewed series Picardo filmed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the last episode of the show will be its thirteenth for the season. New episodes are currently being shown on Wednesday nights at 8 PM ET, and there aren’t very many of them left.

Picardo conducted an interview with About.com concerning getting the chance to work on projects with his Star Trek friends. “I’m very proud of people like [Voyager writer/story editor/producer] Bryan Fuller, who created Pushing Daisies, he was one of our regular writers. [Writer/producer] Ron Moore, who did Battlestar Galactica. [Writer/producer] Brannon Braga is now working on 24. [Writer/producer/director] Kenneth Biller directed me in the Smallville [“Quest” (7×19)] — that’s why I popped up in that, because he wanted me to do that role. So a lot of those friendships you forge over those years with your colleagues on a particular show, hopefully you have an opportunity to work with them again.”

Mallozzi also reported, “In addition to shooting an episode of Pushing Daisies and completing work on the SF film The Awakened [aka Confined, according to IMDb] Bob has been working on a little side project:

“Apparently, this is the first in a series so check back for more of Alphonso’s words of wisdom.” The Acme Brand Comedy website warns viewers that Ask Alphonso is rated for a mature audience because its “content is extremely dirty.”

Flanigan, Hewlett, Picardo, Mallozzi on SGA S5

Season Five of Stargate Atlantis will return to the Sci Fi Channel on November 7, but in the meantime, there are a few interviews you can watch and read in which Atlantis stars Joe Flanigan, David Hewlett, and Robert Picardo and co-showrunner Joseph Mallozzi make observations about what’s going on this season.

WARNING: Those who are adverse to spoilers should probably avoid the rest of this article.

MGM’s Official Stargate website has three video interviews:

Mallozzi’s interview with SFX Magazine has been excerpted in an article by David Bentley for the Coventry Telegraph in which the executive producer reveals that there will be “love, loss, betrayal, revenge, secrets revealed, exhilarating victories and crushing defeats”—and a “significant character death”—this season!

Update on Picardo's Upcoming Projects, Appearances

Robert Picardo as Richard Woolsey

Stargate star Robert Picardo has a very busy upcoming schedule, according to reports from all over the Internet. In a fan Q&A hosted by Atlantis executive producer Joseph Mallozzi in his weblog, Picardo listed some of these projects: “I will be doing two movies: a scifi creature flick called The Awakened and a horror movie with Joe Dante called The Hole. I also will be performing with The Dallas Symphony Orchestra in an evening of Star Trek movie music co-hosted by John de Lancie. And I’m still doing post production on the first horror movie that I star in, Sensored. Check out the website, www.sensoredthemovie.com. I also have upcoming appearances in Bournemouth, England; Bonn, Germany; and Sydney and Brisbane, Australia; as well as a number of domestic ones.”

The Hole is schedule to start shooting next Monday, October 20, in Vancouver, according to Metro News, which reports, “According to imdb.com, the movie is about a pair of brothers who stumble upon ‘a mysterious hole in their basement that leads to the darkest corridors of their fears and nightmares.’ The project will be directed by Joe Dante, whose resumé comprises a lengthy list of sci-fi and horror films, and though little has been revealed about casting, Robert Picardo (Star Trek Voyager) has said that he will be involved.”

Picardo’s official website has that The Music of ‘Star Trek’ event will be on November 1 in Denver, Colorado. Although the Dallas Symphony Orchestra has performed this special program in the past, it will be the Colorado Symphony Orchestra that will perform at this particular event. From their website: “Erich Kunzel guest conducts the CSO and leads you to a far away galaxy with the music of Star Trek in a program featuring two stars from the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation. Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind concert.”

As far as domestic convention appearances are concerned, Picardo is scheduled to appear at the United Fan Con November 21-23 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, along with fellow Stargate actor Morena Baccarin. Then, he’ll join stars from Star Trek and Corin Nemec from Stargate SG-1 at the upcoming Vulkon Indy Thanksgiving event in Indianapolis, Indiana, being held November 28-30.

Picardo’s official website also lists appearances at the Acme Comedy Theatre in Los Angeles on November 15 at 8 PM and at the Sci Fi Cafe for their New Year’s Eve Black and White Ball with Ethan Phillips (Neelix in Star Trek: Voyager) in Las Vegas on December 31 starting at 6:30 PM.

Picardo’s convention schedule for 2009 includes the Fifteenth Annual SF Ball in Bournemouth, England, from February 6-8; the Stargate Creation Con in Vancouver from April 2-5 with Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks, Joe Flanigan, Connor Trinneer, Teryl Rothery, Paul McGillion, Dan Shea, and N. John Smith; and the FedCon XVIII 2009 convention with Christopher Judge, Adam Baldwin, and Connor Trinneer in Bonn, Germany, from May 1-9.

From what Joseph Mallozzi has hinted in his weblog, Picardo will most likely return with the regular cast for the filming of the Stargate Atlantis movie that is currently being written by Mallozzi and Paul Mullie. Amanda Tapping said in a recent interview that she believed that the movie will be filmed in the late spring or early summer of 2009. The Sci Fi Channel will be airing the movie late in 2009 before it is committed to DVD by MGM.

Stargate Hits Big at Comic Con

Another San Diego Comic Con, another huge suite of Stargate events! This year was especially big for Stargate in that Richard Dean Anderson attended for the first time ever, and there were 3 panels, not two: Stargate Continuum, Stargate Worlds, and Stargate Atlantis. Fans had to arrive by 7:15 am to get the best seats, a mere 3.5 hours before the panels began. By the time they started, over 4000 fans had filled Ballroom 20 once again.

Stargate Continuum

Brad Wright moderated the Continuum panel, and it was a rousing and fun affair. In attendance, in order of assigned seating, were Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Director Martin Wood, Michael Shanks, Ben Browder, Chris Judge, and Beau Bridges. It was lovely to note Wright introduced RDA as perhaps his closest friend, and Michael Shanks as personally his favorite actor in the world. RDA didn’t seem nervous at all and in fact seemed to behave exactly as “Jack”, playing dumb and not taking anything the least bit seriously. He was a hoot. It should also be noted that Ben Browder kissed Michael on the lips as he joined him on stage. Michael seemed to take this in stride.

The main news for SG-1 is that both a third movie and Stargate Universe are in development. That doesn’t mean either one has been green-lighted, but MGM has authorized Wright to work on them, especially the third movie. Note this differs from previous stories saying there would either be two more SG1 movies OR Stargate Universe, but not both. Perhaps it will be one of each. In any case Brad is starting to work on a story for the third movie.

Some outlets are reporting this last as major news, but the certainty doesn’t seem to be any more or less definite than it has been for 6 months now. Hmm.

Brad introduced a lovely tribute to Don S Davis. It showed clips of General Hammond talking about what his people and his position as General mean to him, and it was set to Joel Goldsmith’s score from Continuum. When the lights came up after the tribute, all the panelists were clearly moved to tears. RDA got things back on track with a whacky joke.

The panelists looked healthy and happy, in particular Beau Bridges who looks much younger with longer hair! Everyone has been keeping busy, most with acting and Ben with coaching high school pole vaulting this spring, and football coming up. He’s auditioning and writing, however. Chris Judge mentioned he was supposed to be a villain on the upcoming season of 24 but was “fired” for not being black enough, which seemed to refer to him not looking like he’s from Africa. That got a good laugh.

Everyone was excited by the premiere of Continuum with a few hundred fans on the deck of the US carrier Midway the night before. They are very proud of the film and what it represented, the chance to go to the Arctic and then work together again even after SG-1 was canceled. Several of the panelists talked about what a great experience it was working together over the years.

RDA didn’t do well with questions like “favorite episode” or “hardest episode”. He passed on hardest emotional scene, but then called the panel back to him to say it was when O’Neill dealt with the death of his son (“Cold Lazarus”). He said the kid died, how could there not be emotion? Otherwise he admitted he doesn’t remember what he filmed. But his favorite part of Continuum was filming in the Arctic, and his favorite part of that was that the toilet seats were frosted with ice and that his poop would freeze solid.

Stargate Worlds

The Stargate Worlds panel was next, hosted by the Cheyenne Mountain guys. Brad Wright participated too. I don’t pretend to understand all the lingo, like PvP, PvE, spawning, or arenas versus battlefields. What I got out of the panel very strongly was that the creators are really trying to make the game accessible to all Stargate fans regardless of previous gaming experience. There will be many modes of play from solo to team, from fighting to physics to archeology. There will be social networking aspects as well. Reviewers have said the game is like the 4th generation of on-line role-playing games, and goes beyond World of Warcraft in that it takes the social networking to the next level.

The game will be set right before Season 9, and those events had all taken place in the universe of the game. Playing the game will have the elements of an episode. The SG-1 characters will be there as mentors and gift givers to the player characters. The panelists mentioned having voiceovers, and I asked one of the guys afterward what this meant. He confirmed they will record the actors’ voices for the game! He said everyone has signed on, except that RDA might need some further convincing. This is new information to many of us and very welcome!

They confirmed the game is for Windows only now but expressed sympathy for Mac users and some hope that there could be a Mac version some day.

Stargate Worlds encourages fans to sign up to be beta testers and help stress the game. Their current projected release date for the game is “early 2009”.

Stargate Worlds is clearly a huge part of the franchise strategy this year. They have lots of bling, from tee-shirts to dog tags, and are key to the Stargate booth, which appears to be sponsored by MGM and Stargate Worlds. Oh, and some of the buses are painted with SG Worlds. I sense a pattern emerging.

Stargate Atlantis

The Atlantis panel was smaller in terms of panelists, with Martin Gero presiding and Joe Flanigan, Bob Picardo, Jewel Staite, and Sci Fi VP Chris Sanagustin on the panel. Martin Gero was especially pithy and quick-witted and added much humor to the affair. All the actors were in fine form and very positive about the show.

Answering about the future of the show on Sci Fi, Chris Sanagustin assured the audience that Atlantis will continue, if not as a series than in TV movies. This seemed a very diplomatic answer and did not exactly impart warm fuzzies about the prospect for a 6th season of Atlantis.

In a hint of a spoiler, Jewel Staite said her wish for Keller this season is to make a choice, and she does. I assume this refers to the Keller/McKay/Ronon love triangle, and based on other spoilers, it seems her choice will be McKay. But, that’s just speculation.

Beyond that, Robert Picardo expressed how much he enjoys the humrous aspect of Stargate and the way it sort of winks at the audience, in contrast to the seriousness of Star Trek. He said he feels a bit like he’s been let out of prison.

Joe Flanigan spoke about “Search and Rescue” being a difficult episode for him to shoot because they’d just come back from hiatus and also because he had a personal issue going on during filming [a/n: he might have been speaking about the death of his father, which occurred at the end of February.] He said when it happened, he went right back to work because that’s exactly where he wanted to be, with his friends and colleagues on set. He has moments of intense gratitude for getting to do this work that millions of people wish they could be doing.

Jewel noted that her character gets kidnapped in the woods many times. Martin pointed out that since they film in Vancouver, it’s hard for them to kidnap you anywhere else but the woods.

Everyone on the panel seems very excited about the upcoming Season 5 episode “The Shrine,” penned by Brad Wright. There are insights into Woolsey. Brad Wright’s favorite moment of the season so far is a scene between Sheppard and McKay in The Shrine, on a pier at night. The slashers in the audience cheered the implications of that one.

These are just some highlights of course. Check back for a more detailed report, or since video taping was allowed, it’s likely the panels will be on MGM, Sci Fi, and/or YouTube. We will be uploading a more complete gallery in the next few days, including close-ups from the autograph sessions!

Mallozzi and Picardo Discuss S5 and Beyond

As the Stargate Atlantis filming hiatus continues, there haven’t been very many episode spoilers coming from executive producer Joseph Mallozzi’s weblog, but there have been several to come out through an interview he conducted over the phone while vacationing in Montreal with his family. Even if the filming crew is away from the sets, other production team members are still hard at work prepping for the coming episodes, as was evident in the appearance of casting sides for Mallozzi’s own “Remnants” (minimal spoilers), which is scheduled to be filmed starting at the end of this month. And even Mallozzi has hinted at other Atlantis things, like the odds on there being a Season Six and whom he’d like to see return for new episodes.

Mallozzi and Picardo Talk Season Five

“The great thing about visiting Montreal is that it finally allows me the opportunity to relax and take my mind off work for a change,” Mallozzi wrote in his July 3 entry. “In the past two days, I’ve spent time with friends and family, walked the streets of my hometown, and, oh yeah, took part in a 90 minute conference call with 27 journalists from various print and media outlets eager to get the lowdown on Atlantis’s upcoming fifth season.

“Bob Picardo, bless his heart, committed to taking part weeks ago as did I, little realizing that the 1:00 p.m. EDT, July 1st call-in would find me enroute to my cousins’ house for an afternoon barbecue.” Mallozzi then related how his promise that the call wouldn’t take long ended up with everyone starting their meal without him and his fearing that the battery in his phone would die before the call was completed. He was told by Carol from NBC that that interview was the longest she had ever taken part in.

The results of this record-breaking interview are already showing up on the Internet. The whole interview has not been published yet, but there are bits and pieces scattered about (spoilers are therein!):

Season Six?

Even though Mallozzi was speaking positively about a renewal for Season Six on July 1, he was writing rather wistfully in his weblog on June 29: “Can it go 10 seasons like it‘s big brother? To be perfectly honest – it’s highly unlikely. It was a perfect storm of events (let’s call it a pleasant Summer squall) that came together to grant SG-1 an unheard of 10 season run: the timing of the move to SciFi, the performance of the first-run episodes, the performance of the repeat block, the performance of the show on DVD, among numerous other variables. Sure, some of those elements are in play for Atlantis but as a show moves past its fifth season, the odds are stacked against it.

“Ultimately, it comes down to the numbers – less the ratings and more the bottom line. The longer a show is on the air, the more expensive it is to produce. Throw in the resurgence of the Canadian dollar, once pegged at 63 cents to the U.S. greenback, it now hovers at par, an approximate 37 cent bump which adds a significant hit to the production budget.

“And yet who knows what the future holds. WE certainly didn’t nine years ago when we expected production on SG-1 to conclude after it‘s fifth season. But if and when Atlantis does come to an end, I don’t think it should be cause for anger or resentment. Both MGM and SciFi have been great supporters of the show and, if you go by SG-1’s example, fans can be assured that the end of the series will not be the end of Atlantis. Like SG-1, it will live on in longer form dvd releases.”

But, if Mallozzi and company do get a Season Six, what do they want to do with it? Besides having all of their Season Five cast return, Mallozzi is quite adamant about seeing Dr. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) back for a visit. “If we do get a sixth season pick-up, he’s at the top of our list,” he wrote in his June 18 entry. And then he followed that up the next day with his personal sentiment of “The more Daniel, the better.”

But for What Remains and Beyond

And when it comes to steering the direction of the show in its possible sixth season, Mallozzi has been in discussions with co-showrunner Paul Mullie and series creators Robert C. Cooper and Brad Wright. Mullie will be penning the Season Five finale (not yet titled) from an idea by Cooper, and they’re planning a “best of both galaxies” adventure that possibly includes filming in Las Vegas and the return of Amanda Tapping as Col. Samantha Carter. Mallozzi has been quick to point out that even though they wish to have Tapping return for the finale, he has to remind his weblog readers, “Again, it’s all dependent on Amanda’s availability. And we won’t know about that for at least another month.”

And as for beyond: “Next week is shaping up to be a wild one. We’ll need to break three episodes, give notes on Remnants, and hopefully discuss episode #20 and beyond,” Mallozzi wrote way back on June 5.

Along with “beyond”, the four have been discussing a “top secret” item called “Project Twilight”. What are your guesses as to what this secret project could be? Share with other fans in our LJ Companion where we’ve been keeping up with all its mentions to try to figure out what it’s all about.

For Now, Season Five

Season Five of Stargate Atlantis will premiere with “Search and Rescue” on the Sci Fi Channel this Friday, July 11, at 10pm ET/PT.

MGM Publishes SGA S5 Cast Close-Ups

The Official Stargate website published by MGM has begun a series of interviews featuring the main cast of Stargate Atlantis Season Five. So far, Rachel Luttrell, Robert Picardo, Jewel Staite, and David Hewlett have been featured:

MGM: Close Up: Rachel Luttrell (May 13) – “Teyla has faced many terrifying situations in her time as a part of the Atlantis crew: she’s been kidnapped by Michael, had her mind invaded by a Wraith Queen and faced an erupting volcano to name but a few. But this year, the Athosian has something a little more fundamentally challenging to deal with — becoming a parent.” …

MGM: Close Up: Robert Picardo (May 20) – “Robert Picardo is no stranger to science fiction television, having spent seven years playing the holographic Doctor in Star Trek: Voyager. He first made an impact on the Stargate universe back in Stargate SG-1’s seventh season, when Woolsey arrived at Stargate Command in the wake of Janet Fraiser’s death. It’s fair to say that the character didn’t endear himself to the SG-1 team — but Picardo obviously made himself popular with the show’s producers, because it wasn’t long before the one-off character was back for more. And from that point on, Richard Woolsey was on the road to character recovery.” …

MGM: Close Up: Jewel Staite (May 27) – “Having been introduced as Atlantis’new chief of medicine in season four, Doctor Jennifer Keller quickly established herself as an essential member of the crew — so much so that for season five, she returns as a regular. The addition continues Stargate’s tradition of adopting cast members from other respected science fiction franchises, since the role is played by actress Jewel Staite, who first became popular with audiences as Firefly’s bright and breezy mechanic, Kaylee.” …

MGM: Close Up: David Hewlett (June 3) – “David Hewlett, the actor behind the ever-irritating and indeed, irritated, Dr. Rodney McKay, is enjoying his first period of “down time” since filming on Stargate Atlantis’ fifth season began. According to Hewlett, McKay is having quite a time of it this year — and he’s happy to tell us all about it.” …

Be aware that there may be spoilers for Season Five episodes in these articles.

If the pattern continues, the next interview can be expected to be published on June 10.

Season Five is scheduled to premiere July 11 at 10pm ET/PT on the SCI FI Channel.

Several Interviews Feature Robert Picardo

Richard Woolsey (SGA 4.08 "The Seer")

Stargate star Robert Picardo has talked to several reporters recently about his joining the regular cast of Stargate Atlantis in Season Five. Here is a brief list of some of these interviews (list includes Atlantis and other projects):

MGM: Close Up: Robert Picardo – “Robert Picardo is no stranger to science fiction television, having spent seven years playing the holographic Doctor in Star Trek: Voyager. He first made an impact on the Stargate universe back in Stargate SG-1‘s seventh season, when Woolsey arrived at Stargate Command in the wake of Janet Fraiser’s death. It’s fair to say that the character didn’t endear himself to the SG-1 team — but Picardo obviously made himself popular with the show’s producers, because it wasn’t long before the one-off character was back for more. And from that point on, Richard Woolsey was on the road to character recovery.” …

STARLOG: Pysch Test (excerpt from magazine article by Pat Jankiewicz) – “A longtime STARLOG favorite, the versatile character actor with the expressive eyebrows and rubbery face is immediately recognizable from numerous roles: Eddie Quist in THE HOWLING, Coach Cutlip of THE WONDER YEARS, Dr. Richard on CHINA BEACH, the holographic Doctor on board STAR TREK: VOYAGER and Richard Woolsey, STARGATE SG-1’s panicky government bureaucrat.” …

SCI FI WIRE: Atlantis‘ Picardo Is Reluctant Chief – “Robert Picardo, who joins the regular cast of SCI FI Channel’s original series Stargate Atlantis in the coming fifth season, told SCI FI Wire that he initially had doubts about playing the new base commander.” …

SCI FI WIRE: Picardo Goes Dark In Sensored – “Longtime SF actor Robert Picardo (Stargate Atlantis) told SCI FI Wire that he takes on a darker persona in the forthcoming horror movie Sensored, in which he plays Wade Mixon, a seemingly normal children’s-book illustrator who’s hiding a terrible secret within his suburban ranch house.” …

Richard Woolsey’s first episode as the new commander in Season Five is “The Seed” (episode 5.02). He’s currently slated to appear in 14 of the 20 episodes.

Stargate Atlantis premieres on the Sci Fi Channel on July 11 at 10pm ET/PT.
